  1. *CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE....1930's 1940's, 50's, 60's and early 70's ! First, we survived being born to mothers who drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle... Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds , KFC, Subway or Nandos. Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on the weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death! We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this. We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers, Bubble Gum and some bangers to blow up frogs with. We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because..... WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars. We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii , X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY , no video/dvd films, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms.......... WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, grazed from our go-kart incidents, broke bones and teeth and there were no Lawsuits from these accidents. Only girls had pierced ears!.. Anywhere else labelled you odd or kinky! We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time... Christmas decorations only appeared in December... Like they should! We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays, yet the threat of a whack from our parents kept us in check. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them! (Dad-Cabs didn't exist). Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet! RUGBY and CRICKET had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on MERIT Our teachers used to spank us with canes and gym shoes, or throw heavy blackboard rubbers at us if we weren't listening in class and bully's*//**/always /*ruled the playground at school. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law and gave you a whack so you didn't forget! Our parents didn't invent stupid names for their kids like 'Kiora' and 'Blade' and 'Ridge' and 'Vanilla.' 'Porsche' and 'Mercedes' were car names! We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL ! (without a shrink!) And YOU are one of them! *CONGRATULATIONS!* You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were. PS -The big type is because your eyes are not too good at your age anymore
  2. Why I'm Divorced Last week was my birthday and I didn't feel very well waking up on that morning. I went downstairs for breakfast hoping my husband would be pleasant and say, 'Happy Birthday!', and possibly have a small present for me. As it turned out, he barely said good morning, let alone ' Happy Birthday.' I thought....well, that's marriage for you, but the kids.... they will remember. My kids came bouncing down stairs to breakfast and didn't say a word. So when I left for the office I felt pretty low and somewhat despondent. As I walked into my office, my handsome boss Rick, said, 'Good morning, lady, and by the way Happy Birthday!' It felt a little better that at least someone had remembered. I worked until one o'clock, when Rick knocked on my door and said, 'You know, It's such a beautiful day outside, and it is your birthday, what do you say we go out to lunch, just you and me.' I said, 'Thanks, Rick, that's the greatest thing I've heard all day. Let's go!' We went to lunch. But we didn't go where we normally would go.He chose instead a quiet bistro with a private table. We had two martinis each and I enjoyed the meal tremendously. On the way back to the office, Rick said, 'You know, It's such a beautiful day...we don't need to go straight back to the office, do we?' I responded, 'I guess not. What do you have in mind?' He said, 'Let's drop by my place, it's just around the corner.' After arriving at his house, Rick turned to me and said, 'If you don't mind, I'm going to step into the bedroom for just a moment. I'll be right back.' 'Ok.' I nervously replied. He went into the bedroom and, after a couple of minutes, he came out carrying a huge birthday cake, followed by my husband, my kids, and dozens of my friendsand co-workers, all singing 'Happy Birthday'. And I just sat there.... on the couch.... naked.
  3. I'm continually amazed at how talented my kids are. Probably it's because I don't have these talents. My two girls each have blogs about the crafts, knitting and sewing projects they do. One does photography. My older son is at Weber State in the manufacturing engineering program. I think he likes it so much because he not only is learning the technical side, math etc, but because he gets to play with the machines. One of his projects this semester was to make a receiver cover.... this is what he designed and produced: http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/IMG_1125.jpg After some final smoothing of the tool marks and some paint, it will be complete. I'm glad he doesn't have a truck....that way I get it for mine. Dave
  4. Good afternoon all. I'm new to the site but have been riding for about 8 years. So, I'll start off with a little background... I originally purchased a new 2003 V-Star 1100 and rode my heart out until the kids came along. I realized that I couldn't afford/find time to ride and have kids and since selling the kids is frowned upon, I decided to part with my bike. A couple of years passed and for my 30th B-day my wife said we could get another one. Since my job had changed - money was no longer the issue with not having one - I purchased a new 2006 RSTD Midnight in August of 2008. Now I spend my time trying to find time to ride. I ride it most of the time to work in the summer and normally can break away for a couple of days each month to ride with buddies. In order for my wife and I both to ride we need to take a day off of work when the kids are in daycare. All-in-all, everything has worked out just fine. I've read some interesting things on this site and am glad there's a place to ask other experienced riders questions without having to depend on a 20 year old bike repair kid fresh out of college. All that being said, on to my questions: 1. I've turned about 8000 miles on my '06 RSTD and I've always wondered what the normal milage range is for replacement of tires? It still have the factory tires on it and I figure when you're relying on just two wheels you better make sure they're tip-top. What's the average for fronts and backs? 2. Performance - My bike is all stock at this point. What are your thoughts on K&N filters vs. a DynaTek 3000 or both? I'd like to do something to improve the performance a little without going nuts with cost. What are some simple enhancements that would be the best bang for my performance buck. 3. Speed shifting - is it really a bad thing for my scoot or if done properly does it even make a difference? I've never done it, as I've always been a clutch guy, but I was thinking about giving it a shot. Should I discontinue that type of thinking? 4. Get up and go - I'm the guy that likes to ride 55 - 60 mph but want to get there right now. Are there any thoughts on what I can do to get more 'right now' out of my bike? Maybe a combination of air filters, DynaTek and speed shifting? 5. I'm gonna blow the motor... at least that's how I feel when I try to kick it down and get my butt moving. I've read some stuff about the rev limiter and that I really can't do any damage but nonetheless, I get scared. Is it everyone's opinion that I can pretty much give 'er and be OK? What are some normal shift points for moderate to heavy acceleration? There it is... my first post. Hopefully I'm not boring anyone. I certainly look forward to your responses. Thanks in advance to everyone.
  5. Are you prepared to know the warning signs? Do not ignore this. Google it, research it, know the early signs of use of these "legal" drugs and their affects. I live in a town of 600 people and we are seeing the affects and causes. Do not think your child would never do it. I just worked an accident scene that K2 was the direct link to this vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the 4 lane highway, out of control, and eventually trashing their vehicle after a few near misses of head on traffic. It is not detectable by conventional drug test, therefore rendering these kids with the lie of I dont know what happened. Parents are spending thousand of dollars on test because the kids will not admit to the use of these harmfull drugs. Be prepared and not blind to the fact that YES even your child MAY try this.
  6. When Tom bought his Blackberry, he thought about the 30-year business he ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter. He signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so his seven kids, their spouses, 13 grandkids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with him in the modern way. He figured he could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space. That was before one of his grandkids hooked him up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and something that sends every message to his cell phone and every other program within the texting world. His phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. He was not ready to live like this. He now keeps his cell phone in the garage in his golf bag. The kids bought him a GPS for his last birthday because they say he gets lost every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. He keeps that in a box under his tool bench with the Blue tooth [it's red] phone he is supposed to use when he drives. He wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to his wife and everyone in the nearest 50 yards glaring at him. He had to take his hearing aid out to use it, and then got a little loud. The GPS looked pretty smart on his dash board, but the lady inside that gadget was the most annoying, rudest person he'd had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-u-lating." You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate him. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell him to make a U-turn at the next light. Then if he made a right turn instead......Well, it was not a good relationship. When he gets really lost now, he calls his wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves him. To be perfectly frank, he is still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in their house. They have had them for 4 years, but he still hasn't figured out how he can lose three phones all at once and have to run around digging under chair cushions and checking bathrooms and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings. The world is just getting too complex for him. They even mess him up every time he goes to the grocery store. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" every time he checks out just knocks him for a loop. He bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but can never remember to take them in with him. Now he tosses it back to them. When they ask him, "Paper or Plastic?" he just says, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at him with a blank look. He was recently asked if he tweets. He answered, No, but I do toot a lot." P.S. I know a few of you are not over 50. I sent it to you to allow you to forward it to those who are.
  7. If you have kids or grandkids or you're a big kid...........................Here's the NORAD link to tracking that jolly old elf so you know when he's in you're neck of the world. http://www.noradsanta.org Merry Christmas Margaret

  9. Hi All The other day we were cleaning the shed. I had pulled the bike out for more room. After a bit christy and I turned to see two bad kids trying to highjack the bike! Bonny and Clyde they are not. Who Let The Dogs Out Bull463
  10. Wish me luck I am going to court Wednesday to hopefully get custody of the kids from the ex! I have to get them out of the enviroment they are in there and take care of them. This has taken me since school let out for summer break to get to court! I hope form the kids sack we win to get them away from the abuse. Thanks!
  11. Two little kids are in a hospital, lying on stretchers next to each other outside the operating room. The first kid leans over and asks, "What are you in here for?" The second kid says, "I'm in here to get my tonsils out and I'm a little nervous." The first kid says, "You've got nothing to worry about. I had that done when I was four. They put you to sleep, and when you wake up they give you lots of Jell-O and ice cream. It's a breeze." The second kid then asks, "What are you here for?" The first kid says, "A circumcision." "Whoa!" the second kid replies. "Good luck, buddy. I had that done when I was born. Couldn't walk for a year."
  12. I was in greensburg Thursday around 530 pm and was at a gas america I think when I seen a raspberry and black 08 venture on a trailer. I watched to see who got in it but they got in the truck just as I met my kids so I didn't have a chance to say hi. I didn't know if it was anyone here?
  13. Its getting closer to our ride to St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis. Oct. 2, is jjust around the corner. You still have time to help the kids out by going over to the Classifieds and cliking on St. Jude Auctions. There are currently 9 auctions posted, 1st Gen parts, T-shirts & pins, & 2 pair of J&M head sets. Remember all monies generated by these auctions is going to the kids at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. You can also clik on the link below to get to the auctions. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showcat.php/cat/15
  14. Ok folks, now I got the high bid on the headsets. NAybody think they can outbid me. What the heck its for the kids and I havent made a donation yet this year. thanks dragonrider for all your hard work David
  15. Brad and I are alone for a month, grandparents We are having problems with laundry and food. Brad is running out of underwear and socks, he has lots about 10 of each. We usually do laundry a couple times a week so no one ever ran out, but with no kids its takes alot longer to get enough full loads. And Boomer before you even suggest that we go with out, or turn them inside out, that wont happen, and not much more room for more, so you people with no kids, how often do you do laundry? Do you learn to cook less as we are not fond of left overs. Sauces are hard to make for two. So how do make less with out left overs? Cant say its quieter Brad is still here Naugh-T
  16. My Mom and Dad were just awarded this by the State of Maine Patriot Guard Riders. The award will now be given out annually in my parents name. All 6 of us kids are proud of Mom and Dad and their involvement with The Patriot Guard Riders.
  17. Here are the winners of the St. Jude T-Shirt, Hat & Pin auctions............................ Midnite ...Mike Crocker....2 auctions Shorthaul....Danel Dagel csogk......Brian Thanks to everyone that bid, the kids at St. Jude will benefit from your support. I will be posting more auctions soon. Thanks again to all.
  18. This is not motorcycle related but I think its important that people know about these particular device's that some sicko's have been producing. I'd hate for some kids to get ahold of one of these things. See the video at the bottom of the article in Snopes. http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/bottlebomb.asp Ian
  19. Saddly looks like I will be dropping out of going to Freebirds, even had the time booked off. However both my Birthday and Fathers day fall in that time frame and my five kids have made plans for me which I am told I cannot refuse. Not that anyone would ever want to refuse when their Kids want to do something special for them. It actually makes me feel very special. I will miss meeting all the people I have yet to meet and re-meeting all the ones I have already met. For those that are going I hope the weather is great and you all have a good time. Most of all stay safe.
  20. I am just curious if anyone around the country has saw or heard of these crazy Silly Bands? Apparently these little rubber bands the kids are wearing on their arms has been a big explosion in the stores here locally an most stores can't keep them on the shelves. The kids wears them and trade them to other kids, and seems to be kids of all ages. Anyone else had this problem?
  21. I'm looking for riding gear for my 6 year old son. He doesn't ride a lot yet but I want him to have good gear for the short rides we do. Where is a good site to buy kids jackets from? I'm probably going to get him an HJC offroad style helmet. That way he will have a chinbar for protection but not be as confined as a full face helmet can be.
  22. I just wanted to relate and experience I had today. After our Church's service my wife and I went to Applebee's for lunch. When it came time for the bill the waitress came over with a business card which said "this one's on us". She told us a gentleman at another table picked up oour tab. It was a family with several kids and a grandmother along, never saw these people in our lives. When we thanked him and asked why, he stated to ahve a merry Christmas. Maybe there is hope for this world after all!!
  23. Here's "dottie" in all her splendor waiting to go on the Toy Run for the kid's. Will be leaving most of it on as have the B.A.C.A. one next week
  24. Hey folks, I've been thinking (yeah, dangerous stuff that:scratchchin:) that what with Christmas coming up and us having a pretty good size organization, it might be nice for us to do "something" for the kids for Christmas. What I was thinking of was some sort of "group" contribution to perhaps the Marine Corps "Toys for Tots", or St. Judes. I would envision us sending individual checks made out to whatever charity we select to a single collection point, then one of our guys making a formal presentation to the charity on behalf of VentureRider. If we'd all kick in a lousy $10 bucks we'd raise more than $20,000 and THAT would make a real difference for a bunch of kids (And it would be some Great Publicity for VentureRider). Anyway, just a thought of something that might be fun for us to do this Christmas season. Whadda ya think?
  25. Just feeling like talking about how things have changed in our society. Kids used to run through the neighborhood ringing doorbells unescorted trick or treating. None of these kids had their parents with them. Seems we all made it home safely. Now days, the few kids that come to my door has an escort but most don't even do the trick or treat thing. Not blaming parents for doing this but was just observing how things have changed.
