  1. So I need to do my front fork seals. I thought I lucked out when I found a new set of Pyramid seals and dust covers. Now I have heard to use only OEM seals. But I have also heard that OEM seals are a hit and miss too. So...in the spirit of starting an oil and/or tire type debate.. Should I use these or scrap them and buy different ones.
  2. Bob Myers made a tool that seats the bushings and seals on the 2nd gen forks, It was decided to pass it around to the members as needed, with the last possessor paying the shipping. FLB was the first, and im the second. I just finished assembling the fork legs and in a few days ill be adding the fork oil. Once im sure its not leaking ill post the tools availability. So, if your planning on rebuilding/re-sealing your front forks on a 2nd gen, this tool is indispensable. It worked like a charm. Thanks again, Bob and Forrest.... Attached Thumbnails
  3. Well, It took some doing but I got the new fork seals installed. The job wasnt too terribly bad thanks to many posts on here but a particular thanks to Freebirds post on Fork Seal Replacement. Couldn't have done it without you especially since this was my first venture (no pun intended) in the great wide world of fork seal replacments! lol. Got everything back together and the Class wouldnt work. Thanks again to Freebirds post on Class E4 error repair, I was able to solder all the broken connections and the class system again works as a charm! YAHOO!!!!! One quick question... When I apply the front brake and push down on the handlebars, I seem to be able to bottom out the forks a bit too easily. I'm wondering if the springs inside the forks wear out and would need to be replaced. The fork oil is new, the air pressure is working but like I said, seems to be able to bottom out too easy. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks! Jay
  4. I'm considering Progressive springs for my ol' girl and also want to lower the front end. If I remove the air ride system (as many seem to suggest with progressives) what will I find under the "clamp" on the forks? I want to raise the forks in the triple clamp but will I have to plug any holes which allow the air to enter the fork to prevent loss of fork oil??
  5. Just a heads up. I've been out of fork braces for a couple of months now, but just put in an order for another 10. Only this time around they gonna be anodized black. Thought it would be different... I'll be posting an ad in the classifieds toward the end of next week since I don't know what the cost will be until I get the invoice. I generally want to know about the cost up front, but the machinest has been more than fair with us over the years. So next week.... Attached are a couple of pics of one on my '91 that show what they'll look like installed.

  7. not sure if I need srings or just change the fork oil, I am getting a bounce in the front end between 30 and 35, took the wheel off and re-ballanced, it was spot on, so thats not it, put a peice of card board in a clamp and set it allmost to the tire and spun the wheel, not out of round.... it is an `01 so springs are probably shot, just reaching for Ideas.. Thanks
  8. After three months of inactivity, I've finally gotten back to the fork seal replacement on my '87 VR. Can't see how to remove the air ride collars on the upper tubes though. I've loosened the bolts a bit, but now the rubber tubes on them spin the bolt back with each turn. I need to get these off to get the upper tube out to finish the seal install. I tried the method from the tech library section, but I just can't get the seal and bushings seated properly that way. This is my "last gasp" effort as I have pretty much had it with this job. I'm not certain I can even get it put back together now, but if I can at least get the fork together and the wheel back on, it will be easier to move the bike. Failing that, I will completely strip it and put the parts on ebay. It was running quite well when I stored it last November and everything still works, so I may be able to get some decent money for the pieces, but I need to get it out of my garage and somewhere else to dismantle it...so, I need to get the fork and the wheel back on so that I can move it. Now then...how do I remove the air ride collars? The description in the manual says "Remove air ride collars." Wow...that's really helpful! Sorry, but since I'm not that bright or talented, I need just a bit more info. Right now, my angle grinder with a cutting blade is looking mighty attractive! Andy
  9. Is there anyone in northern Indiana that rebuilds forks. (83 venture)I hit a man hole and now my right fork is leaking from the bottom. What is a good price for this to be done.
  10. The '86 upper fork tube is the same part as the '83 upper fork tube, right? Thanks, Doug
  11. Just about finished with the deburring, sanding and polishing/buffing of the lower fork legs, the 4 beer cans and the lower tree. What a job!! Grinding all the casting marks off of the lower tree and lower fork legs, sanding with 220, 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000, and 1500 paper. Its a hell of a lot of work, especially since I did most of the finish sanding by hand. No wonder shops charge what they do for polish or chrome work. Its a killer. All thats left to polish is the nooks and crannies on the legs and a final buff with white rouge. I used the tripoli rouge today along with a bench top buffer. The difference from the stock, grungy, pitted lower fork legs and now is night and day. Cant wait to get the final buff done. It looks like chrome already. Tomorrow, if im up to it, ill finish the final polish and then ill post some pics. Also plan to polish up the front and rear floorboards and sand the chrome off of the pitted Barons fork bullet covers and buff them too. Maybe if im feeling energetic ill do the front wheel as well. Maybe even the R1 brake calipers too.
  12. One of the front fork airlines has a massive leak in it. Not sure if it is 68 or 69 but in any case they should both be replaced. http://www.partshark.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=15285&category=Motorcycles&make=YAMAHA&year=1990&fveh=385 Looks like custom ones will have to be made. Has anyone done this? It would be nice if I could get them made up before taking half the bike apart and having to bus it in the interim.
  13. Just a note that I still have 2 fork braces for mediate delivery if anyone's interested?? FORK BRACE
  14. What a PITA!!!!! I went to the Yamaha Dealer to get fork oil... the instruction in the progressive spring set recommended 10 or 15 wt and specificallly advised against 20wt oil. All Yamaha had was 20 wt. nothing else! I ended up going to a honda dealership where they had 5 or 10 wt...no 15. So I bought the 10 wt Honda fork and shock oil....$9.00 for 1/2 litre!!!! (500 ml) That would be $3420 for a 50 gal (us) barrel!!!!
  15. I'm doing progressives on my 88 I'm trying to drain the front forks. I'm using a 19mm hex and reaching way up inside the bottom of the fork. BUT....it feels REALLY TIGHT and I've turned it probably 20 turns and it doesn't feel like its getting any looser. Is the plug really that long? Is it possible to be stripped but not get more free as I keep turning it? Could it just be the seal that makes it feel so tight? I'm almost afraid to try the 2nd fork if I've somehow screwed this one up. Is there an alternative way to drain the fork.? Man I wish I knew what I was doing!!! It's scary stuff when you've never done this before! Every nut and bolt is an adventure LOL
  16. Heya, New to the site and "kinda" new to the Venture... to the point, I have had this bike for about 5 mos now and am about to replace the rt. fork seal for the 3rd (that's right) 3rd time! I have had the fork out and on the bench at the shop twice to look for anything that could be causing this issue. No scratches (beyond normal wear), rock chips, gouges, etc. etc. This fork had been gotten into before I bought it and a little messed up on reassembly, in as much as they put that little aluminum sleeve w/ the collar on the metering tube inside the fork back in upside down. It was jammed on there pretty hard so I got it off and cleaned it up w/ some emery and polished it with a dremmel best I could. Functionality seems pretty good other than this darn seal. There were these two brass colored rings (I would call them bushings for lack of an automotive equivalent) that looked a bit worn but still reassembled nicely snug. That is about all I can think of as far as info/history on this... please tell me someone has encountered this problem or similar, this little repair is getting annoying... I want to ride w/o the worry of this seal just puking all over the brake caliper. Thanks in advance for ANY suggestions! Oh yea... '86 VR / XVZ1300, 87K miles Side note... I read a post that said the oil should only be half way up the sight glass, is this accurate? Another suggested using 15W-40 for my climate here in CO. is that accurate? I'm thinking I have some reading and serious part shopping to do here! LOL
  17. I have been riding with my daughter for a while and heard some complaints about rear end soreness. My wife cant take it and its stopping her from enjoying the ride with me. I plan on getting a new seat but have heard tips from my buddys to tap her when a large pot hole is in the path. this way she can raise her butt abit. Ive been told to beef up the rear shock and change the fork oil. Combined we are 520lbs and I think we are over the max but I dont bottom out although the dips andholes really shake the bike. Is weight loss the only option ? Id like to hear from the big guys. Thin guys with dull humor need not respond .LOL Its like telling a short guy to grow taller in order to reach the ground better.
  18. Got back Sunday evening from a long weekend in Wellsboro, PA with my riding group, using my new (to me) 2000 RSV. I only managed to get the bike on Thursday afternoon and we were leaving Friday morning, so I didn't have much time to get acquainted, as it were. I was impressed by the looks and finish, especially in that gorgeous red paint with the extra chrome accents the previous owner had added. First impressions? The Royale has better weather protection but the RSV has a much more solid feeling front end. The fork may be flexing but I don't feel it whereas there was a looser feel to the Royale fork even with the Progressive springs. The RSV is heavier, but thanks to a lower cg, it feels lighter at parking lot speeds and while maneuvering around using leg power (Important to us 98 pound weaklings, you know!). The fork on the RSV does , of course, have a tendency to want to "flop" at low speeds due to the weight of the fairing but I'm getting used to that. I did appreciate the auxiliary plug in the tape deck so that we could use our MP3 player. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the trip and found the RSV to be quite comfortable, so it looks like we get to do more touring. Once I've got the Royale put back together, it will be going up for sale. It's a nice bike, but after sampling both, I definitely prefer the RSV (Oh God, here come the howls of outrage from the first gen camp!). One thing I did miss was the lack of bag liners for the RSV (The Royale didn't have any either.). While we did get everything packed away, getting it all into the motel room was a bit annoying. I found three companies advertising liners for the RSV...Star Yamaha Accessories ($79.99 for three pieces), Bestem USA ($65.95 for three pieces) and TLC Products ($89.99 for three pieces). I checked out J.C. Whitney and noted a review mentioning a problem with the suggested bag liners being a bit short in height (Hopnel liners) which left an empty space at the top of the saddlebags ($40.00 for 2 saddlebag liners and $34.99 for a Harley Tour Pak trunk liner (As suggested by someone on this site)). Has anyone had experience with any of these liners? I really would like to use something other than the assortment of bags we used this time. Anything that makes life easier for my honey means more touring time! Andy
  19. I recently bought a pretty good shape '84 VR that was running fairly rough.. The Yamaha dealer got it running pretty darned good. Among other things, they also changed the fork seals due to oil weeping. When I got it home though, there was fork oil all over the place. The dealer said they had put three seals in that fork and had finally hoped it would hold. Obviously not. He said there must be someting in the fork pinching the seal and the fork will need to be replaced. Also said the forks are not available any more. Been looking on EBay, but not sure how trustworthy those forks are. First, does this multi-failure with seals sound right to you guys? Secondly, anyone out there have an appropriate model, good condition fork that they would consider selling? (Bummer that, on top of everything else, the new beakes are probably now needing replaced due to the fork oil...) Thanks in advance for your input all...
  20. Gotta love Craigslist! To scratch that standard itch, I picked up this 82 GS850G this morning. This one has been lovingly cared for (I think not so much by the guy I bought it from but definitely before. Needs some fork seals and brake pads, but got it for well under NADA for one in this good of shape. I already ditched the plexi-faring. Better pictures once she has had a bath. http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj302/ThomWill/Sasha/Sasha1.jpg http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj302/ThomWill/Sasha/Sasha2.jpg http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj302/ThomWill/Sasha/Sasha3.jpg
  21. is there a step by step in here somewhere im missing? i was told i should change fork oil in my venture and wonder if its easy i can work on car ok but brand new to bikes and dont want to pull apart front end and get stuck with riding season just starting thanks
  22. After months of trying to disassemble the front end, mostly delayed for health reasons, heat, wildfire smoke, etc, I finally dropped the fork off the bike today. Of course there is ALWAYS one bolt that strips and mine was the pinch bolt on the upper tree. Tried drilling it out but eventually ended up using a dremel with a cutting wheel to cut through the exposed bolt shaft. Glad I have a nice chrome tree to replace it with. (Thanks BoBo) Finally got to use Dingy's fork nut tool to loosen it up. Great tool Gary!! Need to go out today and pick up a 5-6" folding table to lay out parts prior to polishing. Shop area is a total mess right now and got parts/tools all over the place. Cant work like that. Hope to have the tubes disassembled sometime in the next week and get down to some serious parts polishing by next tuesday/wed. Going to fabricate a bracket to bolt to the fork legs to hold it in the bench vise to remove the tube/seals/bushings etc. That wiring bundle sure is a mess though. Got it all sitting on top of the airbox area of the tank. It looks like one of those Comcast commercials which shows the ATT aged wire bundle. Sure glad I marked each and every connection. Hey Eck...its all for you buddy!!!
  23. I sold out of the group buy fork braces late last year, but lately a few members have expressed interest in more... so I just ordered another 10 braces and they should be shipped out this Friday. If anyone is interested go to FORK BRACES for pricing and pics. For those newer members that aren't sure what an improved brace will do, they make the forks works together, improving straight line stopping, rough roads, and making it easier to hold a line when cornering. One of the best bang for the buck improvements you can install on your bike. Condor
  24. Following Freebird's Tech section instructions, I have the fork springs out (Plastic spacer - did Yamaha use a plastic spacer?) and the bottom bolts out. I tried to remove the lower tubes as instructed, but while they broke loose from the "pressure hold", I seem to be hitting something solid and metallic right at the bottom before they come apart. Anyone know what I'm hitting? I don't want to keep slamming the lower tubes against this without knowing what's happening. Thanks Andy __________________
