  1. Not being totally familiar with the RSV (Yet) I know that the bike needs a oil change, wont get into the oil stuff, but do need to know what a cross number or Filter number would be. The closest Stealer is 75 or so miles away. The previous owner didn't offer up to much except it needed an oil change, and had 3 Qt's of oil for me. Basically I forgot to ask what had been done when,,,. Being as I will have it down to the frame here in a couple of weeks I plan on doing plugs, and some wiring tidying up etc, checking things out. I have a shop manual in PDF that will help on most of what I need to look at and do forward of the seat. The back I have down pretty good....
  2. Me thinks; I is in deep Kemchie,,,, While I have the plastic, and body in the paint shop, I am doing things to get it ready to put all back together,,You know Plugs, fuel filter, cleaning under tank Oil and filter........ I drain the oil out and it sits for a few hours, and change the filter. When putting the oil plug back in I heard a slight "snap" or "click" I start putting in the new oil, and just for the heck of it look under ( more out of habit ) the bike, and holly crap!!!! Oil pouring out. Got a clean pan and caught 99% of it back, and then found that the Oil Pan had Cracked there at the plug........... How Screwed am I From the service manual it looks like there are 12 bolts that have to be removed. and a sensor. Now this was 11:30 last night, and I haven't given it a good examination, on the placement yet. The big question is can the oil pan be removed without loosing or removing the big part ( engine ) The part in the parts fiche ( I think ) is called Strainer Cover, 26H-13417-01-00 Holy Cow How did this happen............:bang head:
  3. Was doing some odds and end things this past weekend and took my air filter box off--After I got it out of the small compartment it is lodged in I noticed someone had taken a 1/4 in. drill bit and drilled about 8 small holes on the sides of the box (all 4 sides)---Do you think this would improve performance or just some "Shade tree Mechanic" trying to increase the air into the carbs?...........................................Thanx......................Larry
  4. any resonably priced good source of supply for air filter for 08 RSTD?
  5. Want to go and get oil filter and oil from Wal-mart and also rear end oil does anyone have the number for the filter and what oil I should get for engine and rear end? 2008 RSTD I dont want to start an all out war now.
  6. I found a pretty neat motorcycle oil filter cross reference for most bikes. I find it interesting that the Honda 1500 & 1800 use the same filter as our Ventures. It coincides with my latest acquisition of 8 factory Honda 1500 filters. I shouldn't have to buy any oil filters for at least 8 years - http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/FilterXRef.html
  7. hi folks got a question about a fram tough guard 7317 oil filter. i have been using a walmart super tech #7317 for a while now. but yesterday i went to 2 different walmarts and they didn't have any st7317's on the shelf. i ended buying a fram t/g 7317 filter. this morning i installed this filter and started up the scoot to check for leaks. no leaks and it fit good. when i came in to record the milage in my log, i realized the regular fram filter i could have used is a #ph6017a. any one got an idea if i should go head and use this filter or take it off & replace it. i like to try different things but sure don't want to burn up a engine. reguards don c.
  8. Sorry for the dumb question.... I just changed the oil and oil filter in my 89 for the first time yesterday. The manual said with an oil filter change there should be 4 qts, so I just dumped it in. On the center stand the sight glass is all the say full. Should I empty some out to get to half full on the glass? Thanks!
  9. Rotella T6 FULL Synthetic. I understand this is now within the specs of the Yamaha Warranty and can now be used on the Venture. So my questions are: (1) How many of you have used the Rotella T6? (2) If you are getting it at Walmart, what OIL FILTER are you getting there? (3) Are there ANY special considerations when changing the oil. It looks pretty straight forward...1 draing plug, and one oil filter. Thanks. Wally
  10. riding down the road everything going nice and then you hit a pot hole... no not marijuana but a real life hole in the road... deep enough that your venture takes a dive and when you recover you find out that the front of your engine hit on the way out of the hole... it busted the piece on the bottom half of the part where the oil filter goes in. Cleaned it up real good, bought an oil filter adapter so that a spin on filter would work... jb welded the area underneath but it still has a drop, drop effect to it.... not going to take the motor off and apart to replace the block, but wondering if there is some kind of kit that will fix this? relocate the oil filter maybe? I mean I can take the in and out holes where the oil filter goes and thread them and then the oil will stop leaking... I was kind of hoping others have done this and might be a sensible fix... I do understand that if I were to thread the holes that id have to be real careful about metal shavings... thanks in advance for any helpful comments...
  11. Ignition timing – Check the timing and/or adjust, How to? Since I am in the process of doing some maintenance on my 06 RSTD (sync of carbs, installation of new plugs, oil change, lubrication etc, I thought I should also check or adjust the ignition timing. What are the procedures / guidance for doing this work? Where is the fuel filter located on the 06 RSTD motorcycle and how difficult is it to change this filter since I will have the fuel tank removed during this work. Are there any kits available for making this task any easier in the future? Thanks 2 Flights
  12. Came home the other day and cut off bike. Wen to try and tart back up and nothing. All lights, radio and everything went out. Pushed it in. Cut switch back on and finally heard a constant ticking from the Starter relay beside the fuel filter. Replaced it with used one and now the starter solenoid is clicking constantly when I hit the start switch-no starter. Crossed the pos/neg on the solenoid and it sounds like bendix is coming out but no engagement. Has the starter gone out or is it something else?
  13. All- I recently bought a 1987 Venture Royale which I'm getting the Carbs completely cleaned and rebuilt by one of my VMAX buddies. While I have everything off, I'm replacing the plugs, fuel filter, air filter and the fuel lines. Can anyone tell me what size the fuel lines are? I'm going to look at an auto parts store first. Has anyone had any luck doing that? Bill Hampton, IL
  14. Need help, what is the best way to get to the fuel filter, seems like they built the bike around it. Thanks for all the info. I have gotten on this site. Just greased driveshaft splines they were dry as a bone, never had to do thst on anyother bike I have had.
  15. I'm feelin like a total newb here... I can't locate the air filter on this bike!! Any help?
  16. Thank you Earl, for my clutch parts and filter. Nice ez kit. Sorry I goofed:crying:. GReat parts thanks again .. Now for the flack!!
  17. I just got the job of doing the up keep on a pair of 2009 CT50s. 800cc. Trying to track down which oil filters will fit. If I got this right they have the 20x1mm thread on the filter, the same as the VL800 Intruder. Anybody got any info on oil filter numbers that will match up? Thanks Mike
  18. what type of Oil do you recomend, I had my last free oil change at the dealers. Also what type (number) of oil filter do i need to get and where do i get it at? (besides the dealers)
  19. Can anyone tell me if 89 vr holds 4.5 or 5 Quarts of oil when changing oil & filter. thanks.
  20. I recall a post about someone had used a flat style automotive air filter on a first gen. Does anyone know where that post would be, I can't locate it. I would like to try shortening my air box enough to allow the installation of the CLASS control head in the tank cover. I have a spare air box I could experiment with. Gary
  21. With the way the year was last year I couldn't afford the 4000 mile stealer check up so I've changed the oil and filter even though it said a filter is good for 2 changes. Now is there an easy way to take the air filters out to clean them or do you have to take the front end apart ? The dealer supposedly did the carb sync at 600 miles is this really necessary at 4000 or can it be put off till better times. Is there any other thing I should really worry about hope to learn a little more this year at MD:think:
  22. i know i've reads post here about which (after market) oil to use (07 RSTD) and filter. i used the search function but didn't have much luck. i want to change oil/filter tomorrow...any suggestions, and thanks. buz
  23. I sure hope it's just a fuel filter, or a clogged line, but here's the issue... 7:30am Yesterday morning, on the way to work, I started running out of gas, and felt the usual lack of power. Switched to reserve, and all was well. I wish I had known my low-fuel light didn't work. Stopped & got a full tank at a known-good station (where I fill up the cage every week) and continued another 20 miles to work. 4:30pm I get off work, hop on the bike, start it up, wait about 2 mins for it to warm up, and hit the road... Firing on 2 cylinders. I'll tell ya', this fat V-4 ran like a Honda Rebel 250 with a fat girl on the back. Couldn't break 50mph! It seems like the 2 cylinders on the left side of the motor are maybe starving for gas? They seem to run when I'm idling (pipes getting hot at the same time) but when I twist the throttle more than 1/2 inch the dang thing stops running on the left side... Pop here, pop there... Plugs are good, and they are firing, so I'm pretty sure it's a fuel delivery issue. My oil doesn't smell like gas either. So, not to sound like a complete mechanical idiot, but I have a few questions 1) Where is the fuel filter on a 97 Royal Star? 2) I've taken the tank off before, and only remember 4 bolts (2 near saddle, 1 on each side near forks) Am I forgetting something? 3) After I replace the fuel filter, and verify fuel lines are clear, who wants to come clean my carbs???
  24. Man, today was a beautiful day for riding. I took "Big Gal" out for about 150 miles and then took "Max" out for about 40 miles. Talk about "night and day"! Max really likes to stretch his legs. Today was the first time I've had the Vmax out in a couple of months. BTW, yesterday I changed the fuel filter on "Big Gal". While I was in there I relocated the filter up under the seat. It was a real PITA to get to in the original location. Pics below. Before and after relocating filter.
  25. Well this morning I went to the garage and backed old reliable out. It started and ran for a few seconds and then quit as though its starved for fuel. So I decided to go to Yama and get a fuel filter. Got home and jacked it up and I can't even see it. Help!
