1. Hi new guy here and just got a new 08 RSTD blue and black. Got a great deal because it was a leftover. I had a LC 1500 with the Wide Open Custome fairing and wouldn't have gotten anything in the trade so I kept it in hopes of being able to mount it on this bike. Has anybody here done this? Width on the top is perfect. Picture of the old bike. http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g51/hunter1500/IMG_0255.jpg Pic of the new bike http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g51/hunter1500/IMG_0279.jpg
2. Hello to all; I have just experienced some issues with the lower fairings and the travel trunk. The lower fairing left side (saddled up) is cracked at the point in which it mounts to the inner fairing cover / frame. As far as the travel trunk lid, the male latch mount on the left side (looking in from back) has cleanly separated and sheared off. I have read that these types of issues are covered under the five year warrantee. If so, is there a generic claim number to be used or is it a case by case basis? The local dealers by me are not very friendly when it comes to these warrantee issues. Nobody wants to be bothered. Can this be handled directly with Yamahahaha? Thanks for the info, when time avails:feedback:. Till next time, ride safe. Busta.
3. Several reasons: *I love fishing *a go anywhere scoot *gas mileage *the ability take the corners *It all in the mind.... it feels and handles like a crotch rocket *The front fairing to me resembles a Ninja fairing * its a Fun Bike to ride *It gives me a Adrelalin RUSH And it can keep up to you Big Boys( Legal Speed) The question Now will my body handle the Long distances touring
4. Mods, if this in the wrong place forgive my newbie self and feel free to relocate! I am awaiting a call from my credit union to come pick up a check so I can get my 09 RSV!!!!! I believe I am going to need risers on the handlebars, I'm 6'5". Any other tall RSV riders out there that have used risers? It seems there are two vibration dampers between the fairing and bars that may prevent risers from being used as well not alot of slack on the throttle cables, etc. Any advice of help would be much appreciated!
5. I took the fairing off of the ninja 250 that my son rides to fix a major crack in the fairing with plastexs. That repair worked great. Unfortunately, when I reinstalled the fairing, I missed one of the washers where the fairing attaches to the gas tank and screwed the bolt in too far and punctured the gas tank. So my question is "How do I patch a gas tank?" Iowa Guy
6. I forgot to ask you learned mechanics out there.. I did video and photo my work today on the clutch in case I got lost or had to remind myself of something.. and I noticed my clutch hyd line is stuck under the fairing. I have the 2in risers on the bike so that means the fairing doesn't sit against those rubber stops anymore. I had noticed the fairing being closer to the LEFT highway light for some ODD reason and I think I figure out WHY.. When I was in PA and the shop fixed the fuel pump issue, the mech accidently broke something on my audio controller and they took the new one off the 2009 show model and replace the busted one on my bike, requiring the removal and re-installation of the fairing. I'm guessing that in the installation of the fairing, the clutch hose got caught under the fairing on top of that rubber bumper causing the fairing to sit crooked a bit.. not much but enough to be noticed.. And the hose is pinched enough that i can't move it by hand, most likely going to require the fairing to be removed again.. This IS going to sound like one of those stupid questions but is there any way that the clutch control hyd hose being pinched causing any of the previous clutch problems, such as the additional wind pressure pushing down hard enough onto the line to cause a slight dis-engagement of the clutch itself?? Weird but then again, so was that fuel pump snag in PA.. I need to remove the fairing this weekend anyway to chase down a loose wire so I'll now have time to sort out that hose.. reroute it properly.. What have others done to properly support the fairing after installing bigger risers? Thoughts?
7. Do the passing lamps make opening the fairing more difficult?
8. I have a 2007 RSV. When I hit a certain bumps on the road I get a loud bang from inside the fairing. It is not all bumps just ones that seem to have a sharp drop to it. I have changed the air pessure in the front forks anywhere from 0 to 5 psi and it doesn't make a difference. I have removed the front fairing and cannot find anything loose or broken. I did notice that the headlight assembly is spring mounted and does make a little noise but I don't think this is the problem. Does any one else have this problem?
9. So not long after first getting the venture, I managed to let it roll forward of the kick stand while parked, and it scratched up the front left part of the fairing. I decided I would try paint from colorrite.com and see what I could come up with. Started out by sanding the area down to the plastic. Then a couple coats of primer. We wet sanded with 800 grit paper between each coat. Next the base coat on the affected area. Then we scuffed the rest of the the red on the fairing and one last wet sanding with 1000 grit paper. Last thing was 3 coats of clear. We wet sanded between each coat with the 1000 grit. All in all, I'm very pleased with the results. The color is as close as anything you can get. I can not tell any difference. The metal flake is the same size and density. After a few more hours of rubbing compound use, the mirror like finish will look even better than it does now. Bottom line is... Don't be afraid of using the rattle cans as long as you are willing to spend the time on prep and finish.
10. Wow its big! any sugestions on where to mount the GXM 30. Can this go under the fairing? PZ
11. Assuming the frame on this 86 is straight it's going back on the road. It was mint before someone ran a light...... Anyone know what this color is called? It'll need a new LH fairing.
12. How many switched 12v wires are available in the fairing that can be used for power for a light relay? What color are they ?
13. Lately, I have seen a couple 2nd Gens with the Fairing 'Whiskers' removed - I like the look. Are they just held on with double-sided tape? I already took the Yamaha label off the trunk, which came off okay, but the tape & glue were stubborn. I used a heat gun and WD-40. craigr
14. I just ordered a Quadzilla fairing. I was wondering if it is installed so that the power to the fairing is off when the key is turned off?
15. I just aquired a 2005 RSV. Fantastic Bike although I will miss the speed of my "For Sale Valkyrie" I am trying to install a Garmin Stree Pilot III and took all the screws out of the inside of the fairing and it wont budge. Can someone tell me where the tabs are located and how to split off the fairing without breaking anythig ? I need to get into the 5 pin Din inside the fairing. I tried geting in between the passenger Din under the rear seat but it did not work. Could not hear the Garmin Lady on my headset or speakers. I did not find how to split the fairing in any of the Service Manuals or Parts List. Any help would be appreciate. Pictures even better !!!! Dave Nager X Goldwing & Valkyrie Rider Lovin the RSV !
16. I thought I had read a post where someone mounted the satellite antenna under the fairing, but I can't find it now. 1. Has anyone done this with success? 2. If so, have you been out on the road where there is only signal from the satellite and not from terrestrial repeaters. Thanks
17. I am on my third day of a ten day vacation and since I had a few days with Laura in Birningham at a family reunion, I decided to do a bit of maintenance before our Asheville rally. It has been a year since my bike was knocked over sustaining damage to the right side fairing. I took the fairing off month's ago and did the repairs, but did not get it painted. I decided this would be a good time and my painter said he could work it in, so I tore in to her. Friday I took the fairings to my painter after I had 400 sanded them and was hopeing for a quick turn around. He did a great job adding the base coat on the repaired area without getting in to my ghost flames, but when he started the clearcoat, he had a problem with it spitting, so that will have to be buffed and re done. While I had the fairings off, I decided to replace the fork seals, since one had a very small leak. Got that done and decided to replace all brake pads. Two of the calipers had a sticky piston, so I disassembeled and cleaned them. I also needed to replace the clutch slave hose and got that done. Now, I need to do some work on a cracked panel where the radio goes. If I can get that done tomorrow and get my fairings back, I hope I will be good to go. I hate doing a bunch of maintenance before a trip, but that is how it ended up being. Year before last when getting ready for the trip to Vogal, pulling a 450 lb camper, I decided to replace my transmission from and 86 motor. I had all of 12 miles on it after the repair when we hooked up the camper up and took off and it done great. Well, wish me luck. RandyA
18. We hit a small nub buck last night about 6 miles from home. We're pretty much fine, just a few scrapes and bruises. Hoping that's all it is. I road the bike home from the towing company this morning. Seems to handle ok, so I hope it's mostly cosmetical stuff. But it looks like a lot of cosmetical stuff, so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets totalled out. Front fairing, windshield, fairing mounts tweaked, blinker mounts tweaked, lower left fairing broken, chrome grill dented, gas tank has 3 dents, both left crash bars bent and worn through(what a spark show as we slid down the road on it though), left saddle bag broken, trunk lid scraped, speaker housing scraped, antenna scraped, handle bars bent, mirror scraped. Probably a few more things we've missed. Oh ya, when we went to the crash site this morning, the first thing I picked up was the deer whistles. Guess those didn't help much. Later, Scooter Bob and Karen PS, for some reason the pic of the deer wouldn't load, but he was dead instantly.
19. I'm working on swapping out the stock front speakers in my 07 RSV. Got my Polk DB401's and followed the instructions I found on the site to disassemble the fairing to access the speakers. Then I hit a wall. I can remove the nuts holding the speaker in place, but the inside side of each speaker is behind a metal structure keeping the speaker from sliding off the bolts (see the yellow trace in the picture). I thought maybe the speaker mounting bolts might slide out from the back of the fairing if I could get the speaker grill removed. But, after removing the only screw I could see that might hold the grill in place (the red circle in the picture), the grill would not come off. http://i41.tinypic.com/11rruy1.jpg Now, given that so much of the fairing assembly is made of less-than-tolerant plastic, I didn't want to "force" anything without getting some guidance. What's my next step? Thanks to all. -Dave
20. I just had to brag about an EBAY seller - Alecks Power Sports Of Erie - They had a set of genuine Yamaha Driving Lights listed with a BIN of $219. + shipping. I bought the set and paid for them on Monday afternoon and by Tuesday afternoon the package was sitting on my porch. Tuesday evening I had them mounted and today I took the fairing back off and installed a 12v relay and a switch. If anybody is looking for driving lights, you might want to give Alecks Power Sports a call @ 814-833-4948. My hat's off to their pricing and their FAST shipping BTW - included in the kit was a set of spacers that allows the lights to be loosened enough to get the fairing off without taking the lights all the way off.
21. I found a set of driving lights for my Venture on EBAY - Alecks Power Sports in Erie Pa. In the ORIGINAL Yamaha kit is a push button switch. Does anybody use this switch or should I just cut it out and let them come on with the ignition switch ?? Any downside to doing it that way ?? Also - the instructions say something about an aux DC terminal on the left side of the fairing - can't find it ??>::

rain and fairings?

this may not be the ideal place for this question and if so i appoligize. I am waiting till i can pick up my venture, and i was thinking: i've never had a bike with a windshield, much less a fairing.. How's light and medium rain with a fairing? seems like it would block alot of it, but i find too often when i make an assumption it bites me in the butt so opinions? experences? should i still be looking for a full set of good rain gear? thanks in advance, guys.
23. First I would like to thank everyone for all the help on the few posts I have made. It is really great to have such a wealth of knowledge here.. So Thank you.. Now that I have sucked up a little, has anyone ever mounted an EZ-Pass in the front fairing? If so, did it work? I would like to hide it in the fairing so it is not visible. I look forward to all the great information on this topic.. See a bit more sucking up... I Ok, where ever this little guy came from I just love it!! hehe
24. Have seat as well - rip in the leather - bucket and foam good condition - more luggage pieces not in pic's. Scoot was running well when retired. I bought it for the carbs and throttle cables figured I could pay for my stuff selling the rest. The bike rear ended a Honda (car) and the left front of fairing is gone, the owner tried finding a fairing to replace, gave up and sold it as a parter. Bull
25. Wired in some extra horns under the fairing, and added 2 switches for heated vests and a carb heater cut-off switch last night. This morning, I had problems. The cassette would play and i could change volume, but only through the speakers. None of the other settings on the unit were effective. Ejected cassette, had blank screen, and every now & then "CASS" would flash on screen. I never did cure itself all day. I will check if I messed up some connections under fairing, and also check fuse under right lower cowling but other than that I have no ideas. I'm thinking it is dealer time and check out warrenty unless someone has experience this particular problem before?
