  1. What is the difference between the Dunlop Elite 3 front tires listed below. Since they are different prices and weights (by $16.00) there must be some significant difference. The only thing I see different is the Aspect Ratio. Which one is best for the RSV? Dennis Kirk lists both tires for RSV fitment. What I really want to know is which of these two tires do I want and why one over the other? Would I notice an Aspect ratio difference from 80 to 90? On Dennis Kirk site more people reviews the 90 Aspect Ratio tire. Is that because it is $16 cheaper or a better ride and life? One other detail, I am considering the Dunlop E3 because I can not get the Michelin Commander which I already have on the rear. Michelin has no idea when the 150/80 16 may be available. My Dunlop 404 front will need changing before to very long so I thought the E3's would be a good alternative choice. But which one??? What do you think???? $107.99 * Dunlop Front Elite 3 150/80H-16 Blackwall Tire (1 Review) weight 17.70 pounds Dennis Kirk Part #: 543447 Manufacturer Part #: 407989 Aspect Ratio: 80 Construction: Bias Position: Front Rim Size: 16 Sidewall: Blackwall Speed Rating: H Tire Classification: Touring Tube Type: Tube or Tubeless Units: Each Width: 150 Compared to: Dunlop Front Elite 3 MT90HB-16 Blackwall Tire $91.99 per tire (14 Reviews) weight 16.06 pounds Dennis Kirk Part #: 542887 Manufacturer Part #: 407990 Rim Size: 16 Width: MT Aspect Ratio: 90 Construction: Bias Position: Front Sidewall: Blackwall Speed Rating: H Tire Classification: Touring Tube Type: Tube or Tubeless Units: Each
  2. Ok I have some 67,000 miles under my 2004 RSV and have been on the Dunlop 404 WWW for the most. Last set I changed to the Elite3 Dunlop. I would like to see if any others have had similar findings. Yes I read about folks getting all kinds of diffrent mileage from all the diffrent tires, but I have the following findings and are looking for another opinion. Dunlop 404 Changed at miles Tire Life Miles 05-20-06 11,655 miles 11,655 05-05-07 22,575 miles 10,920 04-20-08 33,530 miles 10,955 07-12-08 43,614 miles 10,084 05-15-09 51,741 miles 8,127 11-10-09 58,950 miles 7,209 Dunlop Elite3 07-22-10 67,141 miles 8,191 Looking to make a change for more mileage than I have been getting. 80% of the time two up and on the back roads in the mountains. I ride hard on the throttle and like I stole it in the curves. Dunlop 404's I had decent mileage but the performace was lacking, however I did not have the awful tractor tire roar that the Dulop Elite 3 has in the curves. Elite 3 performace in all conditions were unfalable but the noise is terrible. I thought the clutch basket noise was bad. Rear shock still has fluid and still holds air with never leaking. Tires are always checked for pressure before it rolls out of the garage no matter if it is just down to the store. Pressure nevers seems to be low. I always run at 41 PSI. Thoughts from the all great would be appreciated!
  3. I only got 6800 miles out of the Dunlop 404's that came on the bike. I put Dunlop E-3's on. I sure hope they get alot better mileage. 40 psi front. 42 psi rear. Sound about right?
  4. I know there are a buch of threads out abount tires, however, I just wanted to double check on brand. I have been using metzler me880's for a while but not happy with them at all. I am looking at Dunlop Elite 3's and just want to make sure this is a good tire(s) for my 06 RSV.
  5. A Brand New Dunlop E3 has a tread depth of 11/32 for the rear. I have 10713 miles on mine and still have almost 6/32 left. (not quite 6/32 after several measurements) I just got back from a 675 mile trip and it moved it off the 6/32 mark. It was a solid 6/32 before I left. So how many miles do you think I will get with this rear tire...and when should I change it and still be safe. Running it to the threads show is not what I consider safe. I am thinking at about 4/32 pull if off. I already have a new one ready to go in its place. I am very pleased with this tire...
  6. While in the process of looking for a good deal on some new tires I discovered a warranty killer at least for Dunlop. It states in its warranty exclusions the following: Tires used on motorcycles fitted with trailers. Tires injected with dry/liquid balancers or sealants, or in which anything other than air has been used as the support medium. I am assuming this warranty exclusion is referring to the balancing beads and/or any leak preventing sealer? I looked on the Michelin website for similiar exclusion but did not find any. However, the Michelin tire care section is still under construction so it may be in the fine print too. You can see the entire list of Dunlop warranty exclusions at the link below. http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/infocenter_warranties.asp
  7. I have a 1996 Royal Star that I just purchased and I need to replace the front tire. The bike is blue & white and currently has Dunlop D404 white wall tires, that really look good. I spoke to a local Yamaha dealer yesterday and they recommended the Elite 3, but that was mainly becuase I told them I did not care if it was a WW, I just wanted something that would have excellent traction in both dry/wet pavement. Have been reading reviews of tires on the internet and on this forum and now I am totally frustrated. I have pretty much decided that I want to replace it with a WW tire, so I will have to select from the Dunlop 404, Metzler Marathon 880 and Avon Venom.......so, I would like the opinions of those that have experience with any of these 3 tires. What do you think?
  8. Good Morning All, On Tuesday of next week I'm going to have new Dunlop Elite 3 put on front and rear. On the Dunlop web site it says to run 36# in the front and 40# in the rear. Is this what all you Elite 3 runners are putting in? This seems a bit low to me as I've been running 40# front and 43# rear in the stock stones. Want to get the best life out of these tires as possible! Thanks!
  9. Hello, I'm getting close to a tire change and would like to change to the Dunlop E3's. I have stock size Stones ie: 150-80H-16 front and a 150-90H-15 rear. I do not find these sizes in the Dunlop E3 listing. What size are you E3 users using? Thanks!
  10. I ordered a new set of Dunlop Elite 3s for my 07 from Bike Bandit on 10/20. They had the front in stock, received it in 3 days and was very pleased. The back tire was backordered. First date they gave me was 10/30 from the factory. Then it pushed to 11/10. I was out of town last week and when I got back I checked my order and still showed back ordered. Called them Monday morning and it has now pushed to 11/20. Have a flat on the back. 13,000 miles on set with tread left, but had a peice of metal in back I removed and plugged till I get my new ones in. Got home and the tire is flat again. Aired it up and is leaking. Don't want to take a chance with it now. Called around to all the local shops, Yamaha, Honda, Power Sports, Cycle Gear, etc. No one has one in stock. Checked all the online sources, same thing. Went to the Cycle World international Motorcycle Show Sunday in Dallas, had to drive truck cause flat tire on bike. Weather was bueatiful, not happy about not rididng. Found a Dunlop rep there and he told me that size tire is not a big sellar so they are probably pushing it back to meet other tire deliveries. Anyway I called Bike Bandit back Monday morning and they had plenty of Avons in stock so I ordered one ($30 more) and it was delivered yesterday. Very happy with Bike Bandit folks willing to help any way they could and got my tire to me quick. I have a ride this Saturday that has been planned for long time and have missed riding to work for a couple of weeks when the weather was great. Also a lot of Toy Runs coming up I want to do. Just letting everyone know if you are thinking of getting a Dunlop Elite 3 you need to order now and maybe you might get it by Christmas.
  11. Anybody have any experience with this tire. Not asking if this is the best only asking if anyone has any experience with this tire. I already know about Avon's and Dunlop E3's but know nothing about this tire.
  12. Here is a heads up. I'm stripping down a decent running 83 XVZ12. Body is poor. Luggage not to bad if your going to paint. I AM KEEPING ALL PARTS THAT WILL WORK ON A 1986. Motor has 37K and a good 2nd gear. No idea if it has ever been repaired. I have a set of Dunlop Cruisemax tires (blackwall) with only 1000 miles on them. Let me know what you want. I want to sell stuff here before I try to Ebay. Listed in Classifieds
  13. I have heard and read about the Avon V Dunlop tires. I have heard about the 150 v 130 for handling. And I have been reading about the Motorkote saga. Well here is my story, I decided to go with the Avons front & rear last week of June 2009. Front end had a little hop when I first picked up bike from service. Was going to take it back and then thought it was the way they banded the tires together from factory and it would come out of it. (They were banded tight causing the tires to sink in where the six bands were). Well not sure if it came out or got use to it but bike started to get a shimmy in the front when stopping. Thought it was the "black-top" road, then it started doing it on pavement. Well I took it back last Saturday to the shop as I had to go to Omaha to work for the week. Shop called me at 10 am on Monday said the tire was not true (around or side to side) but still was in balance. Said they called Avon and Avon was going to replace the tire free of charge (had to pay for mounting & balance). Shop mounted a Donlop 130 E3 on it and test road it to check everything else and said bike road like a dream compared to when I brought it in. (My thoughts were "Yah,,,Right") Well Avon was sending a new tire and it "would" be here before the long weekend. WRONG.... Shop called me as I was heading back from Omaha today and said tire did not make it. So I said is the Dunlop still on it? Shop said yes, I said leave it on and I would buy it and have the Avon as a spare when it comes in. (Why not right)? Figured I could check out this fantasy of the 150 V 130 this way. WOW!!!!!! I could tell the first 50 feet this tire was great at low speeds! I took it out on the road, put on 5 miles in town 25 on highway then came back and paid for it. Road home changed close and also put in MOTORKOTE 4oz in the oil. (Pick it up at a Flying J in Omaha, 32 oz paid $22 for it. "They charged me wrong price the shelf said $29 but who am I to argue, right?) Anyway went for 75 mile ride. Tire is GREAT handling, has more noise than the Avon (even a bad Avon). The wonderful chirp "even after only 75 miles" is 30 to 40% quieter. I am hard of hearing and I now hear more of the exhaust that the "chirp" was covering. COOL,,, sounds great. I will give the 130 E3 Dunlop and the MOTORKOTE a better run for the money this weekend. This will be two up not just me. Not sure where we are going but who cares right as long as we are riding! 130 V 150???? So far 130 has it hands down for handling for me. Believer. Avon V Dunlop for noise??? So far the Avon was quieter, for me. MOTORKOTE??? Up in the air so far, but looking good , for me. More up-date later, my two fingers that I type with are tired now. Bryan...Who wishes he would have paid more attention to the typing teacher then the cute brunette in the desk in front of me.
  14. 1861.1 This has not been verified so has anyone else heard anything about it? Heads up....here's something that may involve you or someone you know...if you want to comment or follow this here's the link....http://pnwriders.com/general-discussion/108902-defective-tires-possible-recall.html Defective Tires -- Possible Recall Harley Davidson, Honda and Goodyear Dunlop should investigate a number of motorcycle crashes involving sudden deflation of Goodyear Dunlop D402 and other tires, attorney Billy Edwards said today. The tires, installed as original equipment or sold as replacement tires on touring and cruiser motorcycles, may need to be recalled, he added. Five more instances of sudden deflation of the Dunlop D402 tire have been reported to the safety website, www.UnsafeMotorCycles.com, he noted. All four incidents involved Harley Davidson Ultra Classic touring motorcycles and occurred in the last 13 months, he said. The latest incident occurred in , he said. Others have been reported in , and , he said. “We believe this is the tip of the iceberg. The defect in these tires appears to be worsening as the tires age, leading to more instances of sudden deflation and serious injury,” Edwards said. These reports join at least two lawsuits filed recently involving allegations of Goodyear Dunlop tire deflations, one in , , the other in According to the allegations described in a lawsuit in the crash, a defect in the bead seat area of the tire allowed excessive leakage of air leading to a “sudden and catastrophic deflation” of the tire. Stephen Gageby, , was killed, and his wife was seriously injured in the resulting crash, the suit says. The suit was filed in U.S. District Court, Middle District of Georgia, Athens Division,(Case no. 3:09-cv-74 ), and involved the death of a passenger Patricia Morris. Among other things, the suit alleges Harley Davidson knew it was “false and misleading” to represent that its 2007 FLHTCU and its tires were safe for carrying up to two riders weighing more than 250 pounds each, plus their cargo and motorcycle accessories. The suit (Cause No. DV-08- 480) was filed Nov. 10, 2008, in the Second Judicial District Court, . Attorneys representing the Gageby estate are Michael McKeon, with the law firm of McKeon and , PC, , , and Billy Edwards, with the Edwards Law Firm, .
  15. I just bought a set of Dunlop Elite IIIs for my RSV and I noticed that the front tire is fatter than the rear... This bugged me a little so I did some poking around and found out the MV85-15 size listed for the RSV rear is the same as a 150/80-15 (See it here)... I got the stock size 150/80-16 for the front and I guess because of the 1" difference in rim size makes the front wider... I haven't got past the scrub in stage yet so I'm not sure if it affects handling... Has anyone else noticed this???
  16. Forget it it I just cross referenced it with the Dunlop website and put 2+2 together and realized it was the difference between WWW and BWs.... the 2 pics of BW tires threw me...
  17. Hello everyone: I need to buy tires and I think that I would like to try the dunlop elite 3. I went to the dunlop site and they recommended 150/80-16 for the front, And MV85B15 for the rear. But so far all I can find is 150/80H-16 for the front, And MV85HB15 or MV85H15 for the rear. Can anyone tell me the difference between the HB or the H, Or do I even need to worry about it. I get brain dead sometimes and over think things sorry if it sounds like a dumb question.
  18. I'm ready for tires, and extremely hesitant about downsizing my front tire, mainly because I can't get a single mechanic or shop to say that it will fit my rim. I know many here have done it with the Avons, but does anyone have the 130-90-16 Dunlop E-3 on the front of their RSV with the stock rim? Any issues whatsoever?
  19. If I have the correct info the Dunlop E2 tires are going to be hard to find, if available at all. I have a practically new E2 on the rear of my 88VR and can't really afford to replace both tires this year, especially considering the condition of the rear tire. Does anybody know if i can safely "mix" an E3 for the front with my existing E2 on the rear? Or does anybody have contact info for Dunlop so I can ask them?
  20. Help my guys and gals....got a 2006 venture....7k miles ago put the dunlop elite ii tires...front tire is now shot....a gold wing rider recomended them...says he gets 12k out of a set of tires.... My question...is it smart to run two different brands of tire...say my back dunlop is good...can i try a metzler or avon on the front leaving the dunlop on the rear????? Also is there a spot to buy upgraded speakers for the radio....yamaha dosen't compare to the harley street glides set up....stinks... Thanks all.... ANOTHER QUESTION...IS THERE A CD SYSTEM MADE FOR THE DASH OF THE VENTURE....IF YOU WANTED TO CHANGE THE WHOLE THING... Oh yea i know tires are a argument in it's self...but whats recommended for the slow speed handling for the venture....handles like a truck.. Thanks fatt boy over look the misspellng iam in a hurry...
  21. Has anyone in the group tried mounting Dunlop's E3 size MT90HB16 on their Venture or RSTD? I originally was going to purchase a Dunlop for my ride but they were back ordered until Oct. from Ron Ayers ( I needed the tire in early Sept.) so I went with the Avon Venom. Anyways should I try the Dunlop on the RSTD or should I stay with the Avon Venom AM41? Dave:confused07:
  22. If I were to purchase front and rear Dunlop Elite II RWL tires, will I be getting an older tire? What I mean is now that Dunlop is making the Elite IIIs, have the Elite IIs just been sitting around someones warehouse for a very long time just waiting for some unaware person to take them off their hands. I really like RWLs and since RWLs are not available in the Elite IIIs, I am almost forced to buy Elite IIs. Too bad Avon doesn't make RWL in any on their tire models. So, I guess my question is if I buy Elite IIs am I buying new tires that are no longer made and are already very aged when I get them new? Any advise?
  23. I finally replaced the original front Dunlop D404 after 18,497 miles. I was set on Metzler I have used them in the past with good results. However after reading many post on that matter here I was leery about them. The Venture is my first bike of this size and weight so I decided to go with the Dunlop Elite3. Has anyone switch from the D404 to the Elite3? It there any difference in handling better or worse? How about mileage? I am used to getting a few miles from my tires.
  24. My current rear tire is a Dunlop 190/60R/17. This size is only made by Dunlop and Bridgestone. Avon makes a 180/60R/17. How much differents is there between a 190/60R/17 tire and a 180/60R/17 tire? From looking at a tire chart. The 190 and the 180 is the section width in mm. So one is 10 mm wider then the other? Could the 180 be used in place of the 190? What effect would there be?
  25. I removed the Avon today, as not enough tread left for the Calif Trip next month. Will keep it mounted on my spare rim. Ok I installed the New Dunlop E 3 ( MU90B16 ) today. Cleaned up the rim, used Vasoline on new tire and rim, mounting was quite easy with standard hand tools. Removeing the AVON, was not easy !!! I measured the tread on new tire, 5/16 inch at center, and 1/4 at edges of tire. I also measured the caseing thickness, as best I can measure it seems to be 1/2 inch thick, plus the Wearable Tread thickness. The tire Tread is 5 Ply, ( 3 Nylon, and 2 Fiberglass) The tire Sidewall is 3 Ply, Nylon Max loading is 937 lb. at 40 PSI cold. Dunlop sells this in the belted model, and the Radial. ( Radial sizes won't fit 1st Gen) I got the tire from RonAyers.com Greenville N.C. $113.95, which included the UPS to Seattle. So, will start milage tests with this tire. I put in a can of "Ride-ON " and went for a 20 mile test ride, All seems just fine !!! Time will tell. Also, anybody been running these tires on a Gold Wing, or know sombody that does use them on a Wing. ??? Would be interesting to find some Feedback from Wing users of these new E 3 Series Dunlops made for the Goldwings. ?? Or has anybody mounted one on a 2nd Gen ???
