  1. I have loved Canada and its people since the first time I drove across the border and saw the big sign that said Drink canada Dry. But please please please keep that Artic air to yourselves!!! :cold:
  2. Well, here is the start of what I hope will be a great story. Actually the story began last year when I took delivery of my brand new (2006) RSTD. I had been on the fence for over a year, whether to go Venture, or RSTD. When I found an amazing deal on the bike, the choice was clear. I even was ok with the plain white color, as I knew I had plans for her. Many of you have commented on my custom skull helmet, which is in my profile pic. That helmet was done by a very good friend of mine from North Bay Ontario, about a 4.5 hour ride from me in Hamilton. Some of you may remember I had the chance to do a rain gear review, when I had to drive hom 4.5 hours in a downpour from there last year. Well, the time has come for the transformation to begin. I am going away to Las Vegas for 2 1/2 weeks, so the perfect time to get my bike up to the shop for paint. Again, they called for rain all day on Wed for my ride up. I got up early, donned my rain gear, and began to prepare for a crappy ride. The rain had not started yet, but the clouds were ominous. I set out, glad for every mile I got that was dry. The miles added up quickly. I stopped after an hour for gas and some food, still no rain, but it looked like it was ready to come down any time. I set out again, dry, and after 90 min, the sun came out, and it warmed right up. I had outrun the rain!! I talked to some friends back in the Hammer, and it was pouring. The joke was on me, I rode 2 1/2 hours in dry weather, wearing rain gear. Oh well, took off the gear, and the liner for my jacket, and set out for a very dry ride to my destination. Got to North Bay, dropped by to visit the guys, and arranged to meet up with them at the shop to start disassembly of the bike. 4 of us worked together and stripped the bike down. I discussed with the painter some ideas, but as we left it, I am just to be impressed when I pick it up. That is pretty much it, I am leaving it up to him. He is a good friend, and a great artist. This is his first motorcycle, although he is very well regarded for the many cars he has airbrushed over many years. I know what some of the elements he is putting on, but mostly it will be a surprise. Here are some pics of the process so far. I asked him to take pictures during the paint process, and I will add them to this thread when I get the bike back. I am very excited about this. My first bike was pretty much the same the day I sold it, as the day I bought it. This bike, will be a total transformation. Here are some pictures of my naked bike. Sonny
  3. Today when changing the tire on my 04 venture I decided to lube the shaft, when I pulled the tire off, to change it there was very little grease on the splines. when I pulled the rear end, the engine end of the drive shaft had very little grease on it. So I tried to pull the shaft from the pumpkin but could not, so I took a pair of vise grip pliers and grabbed the shaft then tapped the vise grips with a rubber hammer, shaft popped right out, but the seal tore on one side. I glued it with epoxy, greased the splines( which were dry) and went to put it back together. the rear end was lying on the bench with the splined area turned down, and oil came out. It was dry of oil when I first took it apart. Is this normal. Gregg
  4. Has anyone found a cover that fits the seat of the Venture to keep the seat dry in the rain? I saw a buddy the a H/D that had one the other day when a short burst of rain came by and it kept his seat dry at a poker run stop.
  5. First os all I want to thank all of you that post the how to's and such on this site. it gave me the courage to pull the rear wheel off and then the driveshaft out tonight. You can officially count me as a member of the DRY driveshaft club. It was dry as a bone on both ends. Now to be honest, I could see where there had been something there at one time. But it couldn't have been much. I am wondering if they don't just put some assembly lube on the things when they first install them and call it finished. But it's greased up and back together now. My wife helped me get the shaft lined up and we got it in position the first try. Tomorrow I need to go get some new lube for the pumpkin and then I'll put the pipes and bags back on and take her for a ride. Thanks again for giving me the confidence of doing this kind of thing myself. I did have my computer on just in case I had questions or problems during the process. I knew someone would be around to answer them for me. Ride safe and I am looking forward toseeing all of you huys that are going to MD at Don's.
  6. Well just got unloaded made it home dry. Did loose a foot peg on the way see it coming louse but by the time I got stopped it was to late long gone good thing no one was behind me. Bill thanks for putting it meet on it was good to see everyone and meet new people. everyone ride safe going home eat lots of BBQ and stay dry. Kenny hope your foot in OK let use know. Michael
  7. Just had to look didn't you? Baaaa! Ok. Here's the deal. I bought a Hartco Lambskin seatcover. Nice addition for those long rides. I bought it used so no care instructions and I've been googling up care and cleaning info on lambskin. It's seems to be a toss up between dry cleaning and machine or hand wash with Woolite or a simliar cleaner. The Hartco site only refers to toweling it dry after riding in the rain so I'm looking for more info. Anybody got info on keeping one of these things nice and soft? Mike
  8. I have had radio problems for about a year now. The buttons will stop working when in heavy rain but would dry out and start working again. I have taken it apart and drained water out of it. Then I sealed it with sealicone sealer, big mistake that just kept more water in it. So I took the sealer off and drilled two drain holes in the bottom. It helped some, the radio would dry out faster. I'm getting it ready to ride and the memo button will not let me set stations. I have it all apart and see nothing wrong. I thought of putting it in the oven to see if needs drying out. again a temporary fix. So I'm looking for any help on how to fixes this problem with out changing radios. I've been spending a lot of money this year on maintance and upgrades. So a little savings would help out. Thanks Jerry:fingers-crossed-emo
  9. My mother put me on to this story. http://www.ohio.com/news/dyer/38072269.html I feel for the guy in the SUV. Seems like he's being hung out to dry.
  10. Serious takeoff if not ripoff of the Carver (in looking at the videos it may just be a spinoff) but hey it's green and keeps you dry. May have to look into one of these. That is IF I could shoehorn myself into one. http://www.flytheroad.com/
  11. Someone here mentioned a condition called "Dry Hub". Can anyone provide more details...maybe a fix? I've got an 08 RSV. Without the bike running, when I roll the bike forward or backward, there is a loud click coming from the rear axle. What's bad is I can hear the click with the bike running, all the way up to about 40 MPH. I tried turning up the radio, but.... Is this something that would be covered under waranty? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  12. Are there any special proceedures needed to store the Venture away for the winter? Do I need to run the carbs dry, or can I just condition the fuel? Other than keeping the battery charged, and I dont run the carbs dry, should I start it once in awhile in the winter months? Thanks in advance for the helpful information
  13. We all know that riding can dry out your eyes. For those of you that deal with this discomfort, I give you the following Youtube experience. 14. Woohoo! Rode 900 miles through Fay yesterday! Well, to be honest, the first 400 out of Fort Worth was dry and beautiful, but that last 500 - WOW. Thank goodness for a new Avon Venom on the rear - I was able to keep the bike around 70 MPH in just about everything without even a hint of anything but perfect control. Those tires are just AWESOME in the rain. Still have a Pirelli MT66 on the front, about half worn, and it did wonderful yesterday too. Sitting at my brother's place in north Georgia today watching it poor some more. Wonder where Fay keeps getting all this power and water? Hopefully it will move on by over night so we can head out for Arkansas tomorrow and some DRY riding! Goose
  15. As I see it all this thing needs is a snorkle and its right up your alley!!! You can stay dry the next time the Pond Monster claims a Mower!!!LOL
  16. there is a controversy on the hub being in a dry county. not to worry we have three choices on beer and liquor for those who want it. 1) you can bring what ever you want with you when you come. 2) when you go on a ride you can. stop on the way back to the hub and bring what you want back with you ,thats what we did at vogel. 3) the owner of the hub said he would keep plenty iced down for us. can't elaborate on that cuz thats all he said and i did'nt ask any questions. so we will have beer one way or the other. no law against having or consuming it in a dry county you just can't buy it. i think you have to go about 23 mile from the hub to the beer store. eureka springs is not in a dry county. lots of people will probably go there to sight see. we could even have a beer run ride for those like me that like beer. bill
  17. Some memories of vogel 07. Heineken Spring Water a dry county favorite.:rotf:
  18. Ok,I received my Odyssey Battery and I have a Question. If I need to charge this battery in the future do I need a special battery charger? I keep reading on it and it says use a DRY CELL type battery charger? I am assuming the Odyssey is categorized as a DRY CELL Battery? Anyway any responses is greatly appreciated. Thanks,Tom
  19. All cruise controls should only be used on dry surfaces .
  20. This product has probably been mentioned before, but here goes...I was told about this from a HD rider...Mr. Clean makes a system that gives (true) a spot free rinse. I used it all last year, and when I used it this year for the first time, I noticed just a little spottiness. So I bought a new filter for $6, and, presto, spot free. I don't blow dry nor towel dry...just let it set for an hour or so. I recommend this tool to anyone who washes their bike a lot like me. It cost $20 for the unit w/ filters & soap @ Wally World in the Automotive section. DA
  21. I am returning to riding after 26 years and a first time venture rider, just bought an 83 Venture and was out for my first ride Sunday in the mountains west on Denver. Unlike San Diego where the weather is much the same every day the weather in Denver is like the old joke “if you don’t like the weather just wait 15 minutes” So the ride started out Hot and Dry and ended Wet and Cold. I was very pleased with the fairing design with kept me very dry until visibility and traffic slowed me to about 35 MPH and the rain fell on the top cover being the wind screen. Water rolls to the lowest point which happens to be the front of the seat… So I got off the bike dry except for the outside of my knees and arms and looking like I wet my pants. So other than not riding in the rain does anyone have any words of wisdom for overcoming this interesting design “feature” Thanks in advance.
  22. Hey Guys: Any update on the bigger stators and rectifiers? Has Paul in California come through for us? Haven't seen a post for awhile. Just wanted to know what is the scoop. Sponge Bob It's a dry heat
  23. Guest

    I thought you said...

Took the 06 in and got the rear tire changed out after 6500 miles. What a quiet tire the Avon Venom is! 'Well, anyway, I thought that it was a given that the driveshaft splines would be dry as a bone? At least that's what so many of you have been saying. My driveshaft splines front and back had good grease; the hub had good grease. I am not complaining, only surprised. Greased her up with good moly anyway. Who has had dry? Who has had greasy? Jim:)
  24. What if a good way to waterproof leather boots, coats, gloves, etc.? I got my feet soaked a few weeks ago so I cleaned, repolished, then used some waterproofing product in a spraycan. I can't remember what brand right now. On my trip down to Diamond, MO. on Tuesday and Wednesday. I got stuck in the rain, sleet, and snow. My feet still got soaked. I have new gloves that kept my hands pretty dry and warm. My coat kept me warm and dry all the way. I found some stuff from KIWI called WET PRUF. I put it on my gloves and boots and will find out how it works on my way back to Cadott, WI. Well hopefully I won't have to find out if it works. I didn't think about Mink Oil till after the fact. How about Saddle Soap? I assume that's used to clean leather. Doe it waterproof at all? THNX, BILL
  25. Has anyone figured out yet how to keep grease on the final drive gear case splines. Took my rear wheel off last week and found them to be totally dry again. What do I need to use to keep grease on these things. Suggestions PLEASE.
