  1. It looks like they are building an assembly plant in India, how long until they realize the lower cost to build there and send it all over there? http://www.google.com/url?url=http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5hDa0x2B3eo354OC2sDnDgrvFR0GQ%3FdocId%3DCNG.07a5df7c6b6557b51ab3e6a8600d21ee.201&rct=j&sa=X&ei=yF7QTJf3LI-u8AbnnsSaBg&ved=0CDMQ-AsoATAA&q=harley+davidson&usg=AFQjCNESmJJOWzoJ9cRB4O3wo-FnRk5rXw
  2. Hey guys, Wanted to pass a long some pics of the change over from the stock mufflers. Used the template measurements from earlier posts for the brackets and it worked great. I left the baffles intact on the RK cans for now as some guys mentioned the sound gets better with some miles - can always go back later and pop out one or both of them if I want more noise. Picked up the cans on Craiglist for $20 and $40 for the clamps so not a bad mod cost wise and took a short run yesterday and the sound is definitely better. The info on this site is invaluable - thanks to everyone. By the way '08 RSV I bought a month ago with 1600K on her - now 3600.
  3. Looking at a first gen for Kitty - has a bad first gear. Have heard of second gear problems, but not first. What is the availabilty and approximate cost of the parts? What else do you have to replace when you take it apart? Thanks
  4. WHERE can i buy or rent a couple of "pygmies". my old back just won't let me do all the things that i need to do. i figure a couple of young , strong, little-us, might just be worth the cost! lol just jt
  5. of a good painter that could paint a trunk for my RSTD 08 color blue and black? Will be looking to get this done sometime soon. How much does anyone think this might cost? Lower east michigan area. Joe star4772
  6. I still get a monthly sailing news ezine that let me know what's going on in my other lifetime. They just posted this story. I thought it was noteworthy considering the present situation here in the US. Please don't let this thread spin off into anything political. It's just to show there's another side out there and worth a little conversation. Health and Dental Care While Cruising September 20, 2010 – Central America How to pay for health care is a huge concern for everyone, cruisers included. There is some good news, however. Once you leave the United States, health care costs plummet. Secondly, in places like Mexico, there are very low cost health insurance options. When Terry and Jonesy Morris of the Chula Vista-based Gulfstar Sailmaster 50 Niki Wiki decided to quit their jobs, sell their house, furniture and car, and get rid of everything else in order to start living, they couldn't afford health care because of a series of pre-existing conditions. Faced with the choice of either going to work for a big company so they could get on a group policy and not being able to cruise, or self-insuring so they could "go out and live," they decided on the latter. They've been having a great time cruising Mexico and Central America in the four years since they did the '06 Ha-Ha, but then Terry needed to have emergency laparoscopic surgery to remove her gall bladder while they were spending the summer up the Rio Dulce. Here's her concise report: "The total cost was $5,000 U.S. That included three nights and four days in the upscale and modern university hospital in Guatemala City. This cost included the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and primary care doctor fees, as well as all tests, medications, and follow-up care. It was one of my best hospital experiences, and I’ve had six other surgeries, all of them in the United States." Cruisers in Mexico find the quality of medical care south of the border to be just as good, if not better, than in the U.S., and the costs substantially lower. © 2010 Henry Kaiser In case anybody thinks all health care outside of the United States is substandard, let's repeat her last sentence: "It was one of my best hospital experiences, and I’ve had six other surgeries, all of them in the United States." "So far, we have been quite happy with the medical and dental services we've received," continues Terry. "Jonesy, my husband, had an urgent and extensive root canal and crown procedure in El Salvador. It was done by an endodontist who was trained in the States. The total cost for the two dentists, plus the crown, was $350. In addition, we have had routine dental cleanings and check-ups for between $25 to $40, and filling repairs for $25 — all by English-speaking dentists. A walk-in, same-day mammogram at a private hospital was $35, with the typed radiologist report and films available for pick-up the next day. Routine blood-work is done inexpensively on demand at laboratories." To add a little perspective on the situation, a Sausalito sailor we know had the same surgery a couple years ago at Marin General. The total amount billed to the insurance company? $80,000! And that didn't include any overnight stays — he was forced to check out six hours after the surgery — or follow-up care. Let's see, there are no signs that the U.S. job market is going to improve anytime soon, used sailboats are selling for all-time low prices, the cost of pleasure cruising south of the border is well under what's considered poverty level in the United States, and health insurance and health care south of the U.S. is both good and reasonable. For some people, deciding to opt out of what for too many has become the 'new normal' in the United States in search of a better quality of life might not be such a bad idea.
  7. ... I did last Fall (inspired by Tim Gray) - here's my ad on this site; http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3069. Trying to re-coup some of the cost to help with re-building my bike. Thanks, Doug

  9. Last week one of my back teeth started to be very sensitive to cold. Went to my dentist and he said I have a crack in my tooth and need a root canal. Of course, he can't do it so I have to go to a specialist. Cost of root canal: $800! Cost of crown: $900. Total invested in one lousy tooth: $1700!! Thought about going cheap and having it pulled but I really want to keep what teeth I have left. Don't want to do dentures until absolutely necessary. Anyway - I'm thankful I live in America where dental care is available though expensive. I can't imagine how people in other countries deal with rotten teeth and dental issues. I am blessed but I'm still whining about forking over $1700 on one tooth!
  10. Just wanted to let everyone who doesn't know this about some old Vermont motorcycles laws. The State Police are now stopping people and checking to see if they have at least four square inches of reflective material on their helmets, this one has been on the books for awhile. I'm not sure of the fine but any fine is too much. The other law is about your license plate, it has to be horizontal and not vertical. I went to get my Hardtail inspected and had to turn my plate around, The guys at the shop were only doing their job. This one again could've cost me some money never mind points! The Killington Classic is coming up soon and the rumor is the State Police will have a "motorcycle checkpoint" close by, same thing as Americade! Don't give them the chance to tag you!! Joshua

  13. I got a Carbtune from a member last winter (it was brand new). Paid less than $100. Used it once on my scoot and last night sync'd a buddies bike. Cost him a 6-pak of beer and a short trip to my place. Took me less than 15 minutes. I'd say I'm already ahead of the game by a 6-pak. Probably would have cost $100 at the stealer's. Those of you who've taken your scoot to a dealer for a sync ... what did it cost? (curious to know)

  16. Been looking for something to put on my grips and help with fatigue and the buzzing. Finally found some rubberized material at an upolstery shop that seems to work. The guy at the shop said it is close to what wet suits are made of. Rubber on one side and kind of a cloth on the other. With the rubber side down they stick very well and are kind of spongy feeling when you grip them. Just cut to fit the black portion of the grips and roll them on (carefull not to get to long on the throttle side). Joined the two ends together by putting about six holes on each edge and tied it together with a black leather shoe lace. So far so good (quick 10 km ride), the buzzing is gone. Cost was 3 dollars for the material and one leather shoe lace ( don,t remember what it cost, had it for some time). So may have 5 dollars invested and did not have to wait on shipping.
  17. Hi, I am new here and this is my first post. I have a 1990 venture royale that just turned over 40,000 miles. It was working very well until recently, but now it is revving too high and, in addition, I have to manually turn the throttle back to slow the RPMs down (i.e.: it does not go back if I just release it). I have been told that I have two problems: 1) I need a new throttle cable, and 2) I have some kind of vacuum leak. Then they tell me that since it is a very old bike, they can not give me an estimate of what it will take to fix it because once they start probing all the little connectors near the carb they may fall apart and it may take an undeterminable amount of time (labor) plus time (elapsed) while looking for whatever parts may be needed. I realize that it is true that without a magic ball it may be impossible to come up with an accurate estimate, but I would like to have an idea of some likely range, specially the upper bound. Any ideas on realistic cost in terms of 1) availability and cost of parts that are likely to be needed and 2) number of labor hours involved? I thank you in advance for any light you may shed on the subject
  18. It was brought to my attention that there was a problem with the classifieds. When an item was listed with a separate shipping cost and the buy now was used. PayPal was not adding the shipping cost to the price of the item. There have been no recent changes so it has apparently been this way from the beginning. I thank Dingy for bringing the issue to my attention and it has been corrected now.
  19. I ran across this neat little idea on Delphi Forums (DIY Cruiser Forum) and thought it was an easy and inexpensive way to possibly enhance our visual presence on the road. The Radio Shack part cost 2.39 each and was the only cost associated with this modification. Here is the link that contains the pdf instructions for performing this mod. I do not know if you have to be a delphi forum member to read their posts, but if you have any problems accessing it, let me know and I will see about posting the copy I downloaded. Attached are several pix of the mod on MyPalomino. http://forums.delphiforums.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=DIYCruisers&msg=11.1
  20. I have a non-smoking double queen room booked at the Comfort Inn for June 18 and 19 for Maintenance Day. I was looking to see if anyone would like to split the room with me? Cost should be about $85 for the 2 nights. Send me a PM or respond to this thread. Ben
  21. I was going through the treads this morning and ran across the one where Ky,Rider lost his keys at a rest stop. Uturn posted some blank codes. So I decided I better do it right now or I'll be one stuck somewhere. So I took the codes with me and went down and a couple keys made (only cost me $4.00 a key) so all I have to do is hide one on the bike and I'll be set. Thanks guys for jarring my brain. One less thing I have to worry about.
  22. hello . i have a friend who owns a motorcycle shop. he has a 84 venture sitting there just like mine. well he worked on it durring the winter. i didnt know he did this or i would have had mine in there. but anyways back to the question on hand. after working on it . he has had it for over 5 months and so far the owner has not called or made any contact with him when he called the phone number its no longer in service? we rode over to the address where the man was suppose to live. and he has been taken to prison. for over 15 years? my friend said he would like to get this out of his shop. i offerd him the cost of the work and parts he done on the bike. plus what it might take to get a title.? i offten heard about something called a mechanics lean/ but cant that get you a title? this bike runs well. looks crappy. but for around $360.00 for the work he done. and what a title might cost it could be well worth it?.
  23. Thanks Al Gore for inventing the internet. (its a joke, not political). That being said, the bulb in my DLP tv blew this AM. It was 2 1/2 years old. Went to the recommended Toshiba site and the cost was about 230 bucks. Did a web search and found a whole spectrum of prices and quality of parts. Some prices were 280.00 to as low as 99.00. After doing much searching and reading the company reviews and warranties I settled on www.advancedlamps.com which offered a 6 month vs 3 month warranty and a new, not refurbished product like some other companies. Total cost with shipping was 129.00. Sometimes it pays to do a little "searching".
  24. I am cheap so I tried to find a cheap way to add lights to the rear of my Venture. I found this 2001 Venture with 4,550 mikes on it and bought it for $5,300. It was completely stock. I added a rear luggage rack for $50 and saddlebag rails for $81 and the Harley pipes for $30. Now for the lights. They are LED's and the pictures where taken in bright daylight. I know they are a little dim but I chose to add a circuit that cut the brightness in half so that I could use them as running/brake instead of just running or just brake lights. The two lights on each side of the tail light really show up good at night and the two LED light strips coat me $5.18 and that included shipping and handling. The circuit to make them running/brake cost me $4.99 and shipping another $3.99. The light under the trunk is not wired running/brake but just a brake light (my choice). It cost me $1 plus $1.59 shipping. Through in another couple bucks or the two sided tape (exterior grade) and wire. So all the LED's cost me around $15 bucks. Here are the pictures (I know how you like pictures).
  25. Just wanted to drop a note about Karl, I went to visit yesterday and he was able to sit up, talk, eat and the surgery went well however he still has a few issues to deal with. His white cell count is down and his sugar is up and to top it off the brace that cost $1200 bucks he needs to wear for the next month does not fit. He is in good spirits and is quite amused with his happy button. Please keep him in your prayers as he still has an uphill battle.
