  1. I have heard of people gutting or straight piping their factory exhaust. How would you go about this? I.E. pulling the exhaust apart, gutting etc. and would you have to re-jet the carbs or no?
  2. Hi all. Well after years of turning one of my ventures in to chopper trike I am very happy with the outcome, few things still to be worked out and one of them is the carbs, The combo I have is a 83 motor with 87 stock carbs, stock air box and filter with Harley stock pipes I am very lean on the air fuel ratio all carbs read the same , two turns out on the pilot resulted in a white spark plug poor mid range, poor top end, and with 100 miles of test driving I am now at four turns on the pilot from full in, all spark plugs now reads gray in colour, on the road trike rides with OK mid range and poor top end power/ pulling power. So from here I'm thinking just go up one on the main jet, or should I go with 83 jets and needles to better suit the 83 motor, on ebay there is a jet kit for the 1200 and a kit tor the 1300 motor, not sure if I want or need to go that far as I don't know which kit to go with the 12 or the 13. Any one who has been down the road on this one I would love to have some input, thanks
  3. Hello All, I'd like to think i'm not a complete idiot (perhaps this is merely wishful thinking)... I have a '96 RS (boulevard?) and i belive is a XVZ13A. http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p14/dbikers/2012-07-20_11-40-40_132.jpg I have the had this bike only for a couple of weeks and have been pretty happy with it other than the pesky vibration in 4th and 5th gears. I have read (and have been told) that i need to sync my carbs, so i bought a motion pro (i've read that the glycol will stick to the tubes of the gage and sure enough they do and i already wish i had gotten a morgan carbtune). At any rate, after calibrating the tool and hooking it up to the carbs the sync looked like this. http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p14/dbikers/2012-07-29_14-15-33_156.jpg So i began to sync the carbs using this page from my clymer manual http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p14/dbikers/2012-07-29_20-14-38_307.jpg However, this page is very different than the carb sync in some of the tchnical lbraries here as well as on Venturers http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/index.php?action=article&cat_id=002010&id=311 Well, to say the least i never got the carbs sync'd correctly and it's now worse. The screw to sync 1-2 worked perfect but the others adjustments didn't work correctly. Though i haven't ridden it, it backfires and pops and smells "hot" (lean) after adjusting the "A" screw to sync 4-3 and then the "B" screw to sync 2-4. Can anyone with a '96 tell me if the page from the book that i have attached is correct? If not can anyone tell me what the "A" and the "B" screws do on my bike so i can get them back to what they should be? Thanks in advance all. John
  4. i recently rebuilt the carbs in the bike and now they overflow for no reason. if i put the bike up on the centerstand and shut of the fuel the bike become more responsive untill it begins to starve, i turn on the fuel and the leak stops for however long i feel like letting it run. i get on drop it off the kick stand and begin driving it begins pouring it out the overflow as fast as the pump can trow it. ive taken them appart again and hooked each carb to the fuel line manually and turned on the bike while pressing up on the float. the fuel flow stops as soon as the float presses on the valve. so the valves appear to be working. ive taken all the floats out and submerged them in fuel and will check on them in a few hours to see it they are sinking but they dont apear to be. any ideas on why this leak is being so intermittent and limited to the right bank only but all 4 carbs are running super rich.
  5. i went a few weeks ago to help a young member with his 96 royal star 28mm carbs. got it to run better, but while checking out the float levels the drains screws wouldn't stop leaking. i was going to help him out after i got back from ohio, but he took it to a shop where the guy who owns and does the work. he worked on it and got it running good but when josh took it home it started leaking gas out the overflow again. he took it back and they worked on it again and said the carbs are right, but the gas is boiling in the carbs at about 100 dregees and causing the carbs to overflow. i was wondering if anybody else had heard of this before. i have worked on about 30 of these bikes and never ran into this at all. terry is the guy working on it and i invited him to come on and post on here and see if anybody can help him out. terry's two wheels is the name of his shop and i have sent several friends there that has bmw's as he is really good on them. he also works on several other brands of bikes including a couple of police harlies, hondas and bmws. i'll keep an eye out on this and let him know what to look for when he comes on the site.
  6. Has this been done to our bikes? This article is a conversion kit for the V-Max, with CV Carbs ... seems like it wouldn't be massively hard to adapt it: http://roadstercycle.com/yamaha_vmax_fuel_injector_cv_car.htm
  7. hello all i got the carbs in today and cked and cleaned them put them on the bike and it is running back to normel again the carbs did the trick i hope to get them sync at the ashville railly next month i do not know what is wrong with my carbs but nice to be running again i want to thank everyone for there help on trying to fix the problem bumble bee 1999 rsv
  8. hello i will getting my carbs from pinwall tomorrow what all do i need to do before i put them on the bike i will of corse be putting sea foam in the tank first time and i hope that this will fix my proble with the rt rear cycl bumble bee 1999 rsv
  9. hello all as many may know i have had a bad running porblem with rt rear cycl i have ceaned jets changed coil took to two different shop last one dealer thay adj valves and tryed to sync carbs it is running better but still at 50 mph breaks down and will not run smooth dealer wanted to start changing parts hoping that it would fix it instead of trying to dignos it so i orded a set of carbs from pinwall today and hope that it will take care of problem the dealer said that with the bike being 12 rears old with 67000 mile it will never run right again i told him it did not mater how many mile or how old. it ran great before the problem started and should run right again if fixed correctly i guess ther are no mach only part changers bumble bee 1999 rsv
  10. ok i went on a search on flebay pinwalls stuff and found a set of carbs for an 05 to 07 RSTD does anyone know if they are the 32 mm carbs i would need to do the carb swap for my 99 RSTD so i would (could) try to catch some of those 1st genners if it is and will work i can get them for 89.00 plus shipping just have to save up for that maybe by next week then come the intake boots and other stuff needed
  11. Had it done yesterday and they were perfect. No adjustment needed. They did sync the carbs though. Whole job was $391. 5.2 hours labor.
  12. I have been diligently reading all the carburetor posts and articles hoping that I would discover the secrets to remedy the problems with mine. I have only been partially successful thus far. I did find vacuum leaks between the boots from the air-box to the top of the carbs. Took it all apart, cleaned and reassembled. Started up and there was still a leak, a boot had slipped off of the carb. I have redone this process several times and the boots will not stay on top of the carbs when enough force is applied to stop the leaks. Is this a problem that is familiar to anyone?
  13. I want to send out a big Thank You to all the folks on this list that have done work on their bikes before me, and have posted the mechanical and technical highlights and info, so that people that follow in their footsteps have an easier time of doing the same thing. For all of you that post info on this forum about improvements, additions, etc., and especially if you include pictures...Thank you. You know who you are, and "I" appreciate it. Today I received in the mail my new Speedhealer from HealTech, and my new Morgan Carbtune Pro, from Calif. Sportbike. Due to the info from trailblazers on this forum, I was able to pre-read all the details prior to my receiving the packages, and was very ready once the items did show up. Now, the speedo on the RSMTD reads accurately, and the carbs are nicely balanced. While the carbs were not too far out, it is nice to KNOW that they are now balanced, and that the engine does in fact run smoother. As a gearhead myself, I want to KNOW the facts of my engine...not just assume. Now, to all you VR and RSTD owners within the PNW, if anyone wants me to ride over to your place and adjust your carbs...for FREE...just let me know. If you want to, you are welcome to ride over to my place...but I am always looking for a reason to go ride somewhere. I will bring all the tools needed, so I will be happy to do the balancing, and show you how it is done. Remember...it is FREE. Thanks,
  14. The box midway between the carbs and the throttle, how do I put that together right?
  15. Anyone know if you can buy the Carb Needle set for the XVZ1200 Venture Royal 1984 model. I've got the original set of carbs which need to be reconditioned, always nice to have a spare set.
  16. a set of MK1 Carbs instead of MKII Carbs. Well, my dad thinks so. MKI carbs are 34MM and MKII Carbs are 35MM, does anyone happen to know of any OTHER differences? Interchangability etc?
  17. I'm putting in a question for my friend that has a 1987 Venture 1300. His Venture has about 24000 miles and he has had it since new. We have had carb and choke problems. We changed the diaprahms and all of of them are now seated right and the slides are dithering as they should be. However the bike just doen't want to run without right without the choke. We've synched the carbs but it still bogs down under power. The exhaust are runnin hot air not cooler air as it should. Any suggestions would help. We have not taken apart the carbs and cleaned them yet. Dick
  18. While I was working at the Speedway this weekend I met a guy who offered me an 86 Venture that he bought from a lady whose husband died. It had sat since 1996 so he took the tank off and had it lined and installed new tires. The carbs are off and he assumes they need to be gone through. He wants to move on to another project and I can get it for a good price. I don't do carbs. I had carbs redone on the Cavalcade I flipped. Does anyone on this forum rebuild carbs and what can I expect to pay. I really don't need another project as I want to finish up my 65 F100 but this one is tempting me!!!!
  19. I'm trying to get my 84 Venture running properly but so far I can only get a slow idle out of it after it warms up. I have been following the other threads re diaphragms, etc but my question relates to the closed throttle position. When the bike is idling I can retard the throttle or push down on the front carb lever and it closes a little more and the rpm will rise a little. Basically, I run out of idle screw adjustment before it contacts the first carb lever. I loosened the throttle cable adjustment housing and put slack in the cable but the throttle still doesn't seem to close all the way. I would think the throttle plates should close tight when there is no tension on them. I also notice that my full cold choke setting is not complete as I can take a pair of plies and pull on the choke linkage and it will snap further about another 1/16 on an inch but it will still start with the partial choke. I know I have to tune the carbs together but I'm not at that point yet until I get this linkage figured out. I had it running last spring when I went to a "meat and eat" in Jacksonville and one of the guys brought his carbtune but even though it ran fairly well but the vacumn was barely registering. I got home and messed with the carbs and that's where it sat until I started working on it again. I would appreciate any suggestions.
  20. I was riding back from the "big smoke" yesterday and smelled gasoline... started wondering, and then the bike sputtered when I accelerated. I pulled into the first parking lot I could find and as my wife jumped off, she exclaimed, "it's pouring out the bottom!" The fuel was running out as if the tank has a 1/4" hole tapped into it. As I shut her down, (bike, not wife) she stopped dripping. I traced the leak to the carb "overflow" tubes. After pulling off the air cleaner assembly, so I could see what's happening there, I started the bike again. The front right and rear left carbs were leaking out of the little hole on the rim, and then out the tubes. I figured there must have been some dirt in the tank and it has plugged stuff in there. So, I finger plugged the leaking hole in the rim and blew back into the leaking hose... I did this for all four carbs and she fired up and ran nice while sitting there. I did not assemble the air box because it was dark and I was using a limited number of tools (and didn't want to dis-assemble the bike in the mall parking lot) so I tried to run it without the air box... she did not run well - I'm assuming she was getting too much air. My son came down with the trailer and dragged us home - we got home at 2AM... but got here safely. Thank God. So, where do I go from here? Is it time to pull the carbs off and clean/rebuild? If I clean the tank, clean the carbs, and re-assemble will I be ok? She was running real good up until last night... HELP
  21. Last weekend I pulled the carbs to seal up the base of the intake tubes with a little permatex black. Problem solved, no more creeping idle. The problem is I decided to drill and pull the caps on the pilot jets and when I did the right front carb the drill bit bumped the jet. Now the jet itself is fine, but when reinstalling the jet it bottoms out at about 2 full turns. I'm figuring I screwed the threads up. I set that needle at one and a half turns out just to be safe. I have the carbs I bought on ebay a few weeks ago and decided to use them for parts because they were dropped in shipment and the whole rack is crooked. So now I need some input from all of you. Will the carb thats on there run ok for now as it sits or should I change it? I'm out the door now for work, but I will check back in the morning to get your 2cents. Thanks, Ray.
  22. does any one know where i could find a set of carbs for my 99 RSTD 28mm real cheap

  25. Went on fairly long trip last weekend and notice the bike was sputtering a little and had a little backfire once in a while. Anyway, I pulled the plugs and found that the front left was much darker then the rest as you can see in the photo below. Some history, I replaced the TCI with the new electronic one from the group buy, I run a shot of seafoam with every gallon of gas, I only use Premium fuel. After replacing these plugs today, I installed Skydocs Shim Mod on the sliders and since the Torx screw was not present I have to assume the previous owner was already into these carbs. Diaphragms looked new with no holes at all. I do have a set of new NGK spark plug wires I bought from ebay but i have yet to install them. I know I will need to have the carbs synced soon, but I am having trouble finding a dealer that will work on this vintage in my area. http://i906.photobucket.com/albums/ac264/bobandlou3/IMG_0368.jpg
