  1. Borrowed a Carbtune from VR member Magnum and did a sync tonight. Once I figured out (read the post properly) that I had to do the initial sync-ing from the right side of the bike THEN the left side, it was a piece of cake. I did not have a tach, so I sync-ed the carbs all to 240mmHg. Bike was idling fine, but I tweaked it down a little to bring the carbs up to about 260mmHg. Thanks to Freebird and Kbran to the great posts in the Tech section. Bronson
  2. I went out to carbtune my carbs. I got it tuned and noticed one of my carbs is leaking gas. I took them off and took the float bowl off the one that was leaking. The gasket was pinched into in four places. I know it will take a week or longer to get a new one in. My question is there anything I can put on the gasket to seal it until I get a new one in because of course it is suppose to be warm this week. thanks tim
  3. Finally, I am nearing the end of very long list of things that my fairly new to me 86 needed and that I wanted. From finding and fixing an oil leak to new pads, new tires, rebuilding the carbs, finding and repainting to match a few replacment body parts and numerous other things, starting yesterday I am finally on the road. But yesterday was really really hot. Temps were well over 105; my thermometer here at the house registered 108.7; but I rode anyway and two up at that. Went on about a 25 mile ride. Now to my concern. The Temp Guage was just a tad over 1/2 way and in stop and go traffic was 3/4 the way to the red and the fan was running more than it was off. Is this normal in these conditions or do I have another project in store for me? I will be heading up to the Intl Rally and I expect the temps to be well over 100 most of the time I am running in and through Texas. Should I pull the radiator and have it rebuilt? I changed coolant, am running Amsoil 20/50, carbs are right on. Did the needle mod installing three #4 washers and does this thing run strong. No leaks of any sorts. Looking for input here. Thanks to all.
  4. Just a thanks to V7Goose for my own personal maintenance day. Went to house at about 9 am on Saturday and commenced to tearing down my 05 RSTD. Got the carbs off, and had to adjust all 4 of the floats. Put in new plugs, changed out all of the coolant, synced the carbs and adjusted the mixture screws. A long hot afternoon, but a success. Thanks again.
  5. I have a 99 RSTD with 42,000 miles. I need to have the carbs gone through. Can anyone give me an idea of a "normal" cost? I live in west central Illinois and would like to have an idea of the cost prior to finding a shop to do this. Also, someone once said when I have the carbs gone through, I should have other then OEM jets used as it would increase the bikes performance. Truth or fiction? I appreciate any help/information.
  6. I just read with intense interest another thread about one member soliciting opinions from others about their analysis of a couple of his spark plugs. IMHO the two (?) plugs he pictured appeared quite normal to me. But during the course of that thread one member mentions (screen name slips my memory at the moment) injecting Seafoam directly into the vacuum tube on the intake. Then he states that after this treatment replacing the plugs is highly recommended. That leads me to my question. When treating suspected gunked up carbs after a scoot has set dormant for a long period of time, in other words using a high concentration of Seafoam, can this treatment be the cause of permanent sparkplug damage? I have read here that some may dump as much as a full can and even more into a full tank of gas. That seems like quite a lot to me. Others have even written they've applied 100% Seafoam into the carbs while running. I am just curious if an overuse or high concentration can be cause for damaging sparkplugs. I've used the stuff only once on my current VR because the carbs were in fact clogged somewhere and the Seafoam did absolutely nothing. I therefore removed the carb bank, dissassembled all four and had them vatted; reassembled and, whoalah; perfect. But I did not drain and replace the gas that had the high concentration of Seafoam. But I still get a slight miss, pop, cough (however we all may describe these things) at idle. I replaced all the wires and caps and the doggone thing still pops, misses, etc at idle. The carbs are a synced as close as I can get them with my Carbtune. I am now wondering if the application of Seafoam may have permanently fouled or damaged one of the plugs. Any thoughts? Oh yeah, no vacuum leaks anywhere; checked till I was blue in the face. Thanks Herb
  7. Hello everyone, I'm in the process of purchasing a carb sync tool. What I dont understand is the 5 and 6mm adapters. Where do they go? I thought all that was needed was to pull the little vac plugs and push on the vac hoses! Do these adapters need to screw in the base of the carbs or what? Do I need them for my 08 Venture? A buddy has an 1100 V-Star and wants his carbs done also. Will he need the adapters too? Thanks so much in advance for the help!!
  8. Most of my problems with my bike have been carb related. As in float problems. When I got the bike it had two bad floats that had sank. I found after many inquiries that NEW or even aftermarket floats were no longer available. So I ended up buying a used carbs off eBay and stripping out the floats then dried them for several days and gave them a coat of airplane dope. A recommended and workable fix but it does add some weight to the float causing serious adjustments to get the fuel bowl level close to specs. So when I finished my winter projects I swapped out the treated floats for another used set hoping for the best. It was fine for a couple of weeks until one of those sank on me to. Geesh! So it was back to the drawing board and I turned to Squeeze, our friend and member here on the site. Squeeze is the V-Max guy and he had a set of carbs on his bench from a VR. He stated he couldn't see the difference between the floats and the carbs were very similar body wise. Squeeze gave me a part # for a float for an '85 V-Max. I then got ahold of Rick at Buckeye Performance and he only had one in stocks so I bit the bullet and ordered a set of four. They arrived yesterday and they are an exact match for the VR 1st gen floats. Dead on! So maybe this will help someone in the future. The Yamaha part # 1FK-14985-00-00 Float Here are a few pics of the old and new side by side. Thanks to Squeeze and Rick at Buckeye for all your help in figuring out a solution. Mike
  9. well, went and looked at my soon to be venture royale today! here's a couple pics.(click to zoom) http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh131/seuadr/P1030454_800x600.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh131/seuadr/P1030456_800x600.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh131/seuadr/P1030457_800x600.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh131/seuadr/P1030458_800x600.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh131/seuadr/P1030455_800x600.jpg even the puppy likes it! I'm not sure of the year, stupid me didn't look at the title. it's been garaged in a heated climate controlled garage approx 2000-2001 sometime. A friend of mine bought it, rode it for three months, parked it for the winter, and it's sat there ever since. Wonderful luck it was a climate controlled garage, though! he fogged the tank and carbs after draining them.. we put some gas in it and a brand new battery and volia, started and revved just fine. now, i know that the brakes need rebuilding, and the right hand cover has some broken tabs to fix, the hydrolic clutch master and slave i am sure should be drained and cleaned and/or rebuilt, as well as the tires replaced. I didn't test ride it, so i'm not sure how it'll do on the road, might have to clean up the carbs, might get lucky with some seafoam since he fogged them, who knows. seems to be an 86 if i am understanding the colour chart here on the website right? anyone confirm? looks just like the pic of the first series, but clearly says 1300 on the cases. It did blink a warning light a few times on accessories, but i've been reading about those issues and am pretty confident i can fix them. radio, air suspension, and all the dash, all the lights and accessores i tested worked great, except a rear turnsignal. i'm pretty stoked, its gonna come home to me as soon as i get my tax credit for the house ( should be any day now, but it is moving at the speed of goverment. best part, i got it out the door for 1200, and that includes 2 1/2 hours one way drive delivery!
  10. Hi everyone! I just aquired a beautiful 1986 Venture Royale 1300. The bike was my brothers and he stopped riding it a couple of years back. I'm in Georgia and the bike is currently still with him in Michigan. He just shipped me the carbs and I'm going to start going through them tomorrow. He replaced the diaphrams in it just recently and I guess didn't get the results he was looking for so he gave up. I'm wondering if a rebuild kit is available or necessary? Also, I'm wondering the do's and donts here. I'm not a mechanic but am pretty good with things like this. A good buddy of mine is a master mechanic and I will be at his house with these carbs tomorrow to start going through them. I'm wondering however, what will NEED to be rerplaced and what can be foregone? My mechanic friend forgets I'm broke and will have me buying EVERYTHING new. I need to only replace what needs to be replaced. I'm on a tight budget. Should all gaskets and o rings be replaced? Needles? Jets? etc? Once I get them all done I'll be flying to Michigan to put them back on, sync them and "hopefully" have a great ride back home. Any help or advice before I get started would be much appreciated. OH!!! I almost forgot. How do I know the diff between 1st gen and 2nd gen?? I'm sure I'll be reading and posting regular. I'm particular about this stuff and will want my new baby to be perfect!!! Thanks again in advance!!
  11. I'm calling on the carb guru to help with this 99RS. It sat for 9 years, first 4 the owner would start it up and let it run until the fan came on. Last 5 years never started.Bike has less than 1500 miles on it! I pulled the carbs, opened the bowls and found lots of pretty brown varnish. Pulled all the jets and soaked in carb cleaner, blew them out with compressed air( hold on to the little ones, they are hard to find when you send them into air driven orbit) and visually looked into them to ascertain they were clear. reassemble carbs. Use round gage pin to bench set the sync, had them within about .1mm of each other for butterfly opening, each one qualified to the master carb with idle screw. Installed carbs and finally got it to fire and run. Left side heated almost immediately, right side did not. Put my mercury manometer on, right side was a bit higher on vacuum than left. Adjusted all 3 screws in proper order at about 1000rpms, blip throttle and let it settle and they returned to level setting(within.5mm from lowest to highest). Reassembled bike, test ride showed cylinders were lagging, pulled plugs, right side is lean. Fast forward to 4th time carbs come off, I checked sync again, looked good on gauges, rides rough, winshield shake and such. I just blindly reached in and "tweaked" the front screw on right side, rode it again. A little less vibration. Fast forward, 10 or 12 stops and it runs pretty smooth just blindly tweaking the 3 screws. Put the mercury vacuum gauge on again and right side is low on vacuum. But it is smooth after you get off idle. When starting cold it only runs on left side for a couple minutes then right side starts to show heat on the pipes. First 2 minutes you can hold the pipes and no heat, left side will burn you in the first 20 seconds. If you mist ether or gasoline into the right side intake it picks it up and idles up. My feeling is idle circuit is still plugged with gunk and varnish.Other than the brass jets what can be clogged?
  12. I would like to borrow one to check my carbs. I am from Terre Haute but will probably be riding to Indianapolis on Thursday so if anyone around those areas has one let me know. Also if you have experience syncing carbs and wouldn't mind helping me I would REALLY appreciate it as I have never done it before. I would even buy you a steak dinner as a thankyou!
  13. I am Syncing my carbs on my 85 Venture Royale. Got 1&2 dialed in and 3&4. Now according to the link here: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=495 It says to then sync 2&4 on the first Gen which is what mine is. Now the problem is that #2 is pulling way more vacuume than 4 and I cannot even get it close. Anyone else ever had this and if so, what do I need to look at. Thanks Guys.
  14. Hi gang, I have a neighbor that stopped by yesterday and asked me if I wanted to buy is old goldwing, For the past 5 years I kinda have seen it parked in his garage and always told him that you need to ride that thing to keep the dust off of it. It has 42K on it and he say the carbs leak but starts, I see that it is in good shape , so ask how much?? He say's (5) I think and say $5,000.00 ??? He say's nope $500.00, my Question is how much are these going for these days? I am sure 500 is a pretty good deal and might pick it up this week to restore it a little , won't take much. but was wondering are the carbs on that year hard to work on? Carb's leak a little when running... What do you guys think? Thanks for any input. Jeff
  15. A buddy of mine is out of work and is exchanging some carpentry work for motorcycle repair. I hope he is a better carpenter than I am a mechanic. I am hoping someone knows something about this bike since I cannot seem to find a good forum for these. My friend took his '84 Magna 700 out of storage yesterday and could not get it to run without the choke on. If the choke is released, it just dies. It ran fine when it was put away last fall. We do not have a repair manual for the Magna. So far, we changed the plugs, drained the bowls (gas looked good, no gunk), cleaned the air filter, and fixed a few unrelated wiring issues (stator connector was completely cooked). Of the old plugs that were removed, 3 looked OK, one (front right) was wet. I was not able to find mixture adjustment screws to see if they were out of whack. Questions: 1) It appears there are sync adjustments on the linkage between the carbs. 2 between the front 2 carbs, and one between the rears. Is that what these screws are? I assume the rear right carb is the 'master' that the other 3 sync to - is this correct? 2) If these are the sync adjustments, where do I hook up the vacuum gage to measure the relative vacuum? I have a Morgan Carbtune that will read 4 carbs at once. 3) What would cause the bike to run while under choke, and die immediately when choke is removed? We ran it long enough to warm up. 4) How do you adjust the mixture in the carbs? Thanks for your help. So far, I find the Magna to be an interesting bike with some very nice design features (love the hinged gas tank with the support rod). RR
  16. I swapped ( with Brians Help ) my 1200 with a 1300 got it all hooked up It runs Crappy !!!! but starts instantly the two cylinders on the right side are deadheads you can pull the sparkplug wire off (either of these two) and cannot tell the difference i am beat - I am not a carb genius, so it is kinda the end of the road for Coot & the venture kinda out of ideas The stealer in Regina wants $1,000 to clean and sync carbs and I sure as HHH do not have that I will try swapped a couple of diaphragms from some parts carbs I have I swapped diaphrams on the 2 and no difference I got PO'ed at it a did ye ole WD40 down the throats- and wallaaaaaaa motor raced for few sec's on both cylinders so it is carb problem , but that does not help me much I have had them apart and cleaned them -- to the best of my ability I could take them apart again, but have no idea what is wrong, so that would be a exercise in futility , to say the least I have another complete set of carbs, that I have cleaned as well But I really do not have the heart to tear this set out and put the other set in - I guess my problem is that I am not a mechanic and have no idea what to look for or where to find it or any idea what it will look like the short and sweet is that it is a carb problem as a PS -- the swapping of a 1300 into a 1985 went very well I won't go into that as I had started to post that and was told the thread was worthless Thanx for answering all my questions Merv
  17. Ok folks. My '04 RSV has a bad decel backfire. Just changed collectors on both sides without fixing it. Also had AIS removed by Snarly Bill. Took it to the shop to look over, they said they didn't find anything to cause it. No exhaust leak (they say) only offered carb sync as a possible solution. Going to maint day so will have that taken care of then. The caps on the carbs look ok far as I can tell. Those who know me, know I am almost the most non-mechanical person here. Looked at all the other threads for backfire too. So anyone bold enough too step up at maint day and see if they can cure the beast? Or at least give me new ideas. Other than the explosive backfire, she runs great, gets excellent mileage, but does occasionally have a gas odor. This makes me think It's getting too much in there and blowing up on decel. But again, I really have no clue and don't want to mess with the carbs by myself. The challenge is out there! See you at Don's!
  18. Any Chicago area members with a carb tune kit who would be willing to tune my carbs so I can learn how to.
  19. Pulled the air filters, they are brand new (few months old now) and they are still clean. So whatever is causing this is after the air box. It is affecting just the left side of the carbs. You can see the metal bands on the left side have all sorts of crud around them. The right side are clean. Also there is a round box for the throttle cables. Directly below it is the dog bone that bolts from the frame to the engine. Behind the bolt closest to the fairing it is sticky w/ something. You can see part of the harness is wet. You can also see that the throttle box is wet too. Last picture you can barely see it but on the right side it has one of those clips to hold the tubing in place. The left side does not. Doubt it has any bearing on this issue, but just putting all the info. I can out there just in case. And lastly I noticed the choke was partially out. I have a habit of checking it repeatedly to make sure it is pushed in all the way. So what would happen to a bike leaning on it's kickstand for a day w/ the choke partially out. That's oil on the outside of the carbs and I can't smell gas so I again don't think this has any bearing on the issue, but throwing it out there. Thanks for any suggestions. http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc121/lylejt/Bike%20Pics/Venture/Leak%20052009/P1010002.jpg http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc121/lylejt/Bike%20Pics/Venture/Leak%20052009/P1010003.jpg http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc121/lylejt/Bike%20Pics/Venture/Leak%20052009/P1010007.jpg http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc121/lylejt/Bike%20Pics/Venture/Leak%20052009/P1010010.jpg http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc121/lylejt/Bike%20Pics/Venture/Leak%20052009/P1010015.jpg http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc121/lylejt/Bike%20Pics/Venture/Leak%20052009/P1010016.jpg http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc121/lylejt/Bike%20Pics/Venture/Leak%20052009/P1010017.jpg http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc121/lylejt/Bike%20Pics/Venture/Leak%20052009/P1010019.jpg
  20. 1983 Venture w. 10K on the clock, no title, been sitting since '02 needs carbs rebuild for starters. Seems complete. No further info available.
  21. First let me say I have been thru many types of carbs. This spring while getting my '87 on the road after 2 years of working on the engine I misdiagnosed a carb issue ...which was actually the boost sensor leaking. Also, I should have known better since the carbs had been drain dry 2 years ago. BUT now I have rebuilt the carbs. Using the "Gunk" bucket for all internal jets and housings. Which infact the carbs were quite spotless from the beginning. HERE'S the ODD thing(s). (1) I can do a 1st morning start with NO CHOKE just by twisting the throttle on a 70 degree day. And it will idle at 600 and slowly warms to the standard 950 or so. Not needing the choke at all. I could never do this prior to my carb work. CAN ANYONE ELSE DO THIS??? If I want, it will start w/half choke and rev to 2500 or so. I did set the low speed jets(w/digital tach) and the bike will idle forever and not load up. I do have new slide assys that I install 8k ago.. On the highway it not as smooth at my usual cruising speed of 72mph as I remember. I have removed my Jason-MOD so I could get an honest reading of the spark plugs. I removed the spark plugs after a good long ride,to check them. Oddly there are 2 colors on each...like a zebra. Light on one side and dark brown on the other side. Carbs are sync'd at idle and 3000rpm. My mileage on my 1st 2 tanks have been 41 back roads(tank 1) and 37.5 mostly highway(tank 2), but faster than 70mph. I used to get 40mpg all the time. I will say the bike pulls w/o any hesitation no matter what the temp. guage reads. So could she be too rich above idle? Floats are set to spec-16mm below middle mark. Checked both on(by shimming the center stand for perfect level) and off the bike.Lastly, when I did the rebuild I did not replace the o-rings(looked good under the magnifine glass) and rubber plugs. I think now:think: maybe I should have...ugh! Wish I had an EGA machine. Nearest dealer with one is 35 miles away. AND making an appointment is not easy. I don't leave my bike at the dealer. I would really like it if you guys could please give me your input before I order $80 in parts and yank the carbs. PS, trying to get this done by end of this month. Americade is almost here...
  22. The gas mileage on my bike sucked at around 20 mpg, I had two carbs that seemed to be leaking and my last ride the other day the bike ran like crap. So I took the carbs off and apart looking for whatever i could find that might be causing problems. Before taking carbs off i did the float/ fuel level check and the level on three carbs where 3/8" below fuel level mark and the fourth (#3) was 5/8" below. Took carbs apart, bent tangs on floats down a littlebit, Reassembled carbs put them back on did fuel level in bowl check again and all carbs showed about 3/4" below mark. That ddn't make sense. Took carbs back off and apart, bent tangs up, put back carbs together, reinstalled did check again and gas wouldn't show in tube for any of the carbs. So, I took them apart again bent tangs back down. reassembled, reinstalled did check and bowl fuel level showed 3/8" below mark on all carbs. I figured at this point they were better than they were so I'd try to run her to see if there was any improvement. Put the air box back on and cranked her. Now she's surging and dumping gas on the ground through the four overflow tubes that run down frame to the ground.:bang head: Did I mention that I really hate these carbs. Can anyone offer any help?
  23. This was a question about finding various adjustment screws for synching carbs but I got it sorted out.. Thanks
  24. Just pulled two of the four carb sliders/diaphrams and each had three or four tiny pin holes and I suppose need replaced. My question is, I have a second set of carbs with unknown issues and want to ask if the entire diaphram assembly can be exchanged from one set of carbs to another? Looking at things and considering all things, I don't see why not. However, I don't consider myself an expert on things of this nature and just want to ask those that are. Second question is, I just had the Carbtune hooked up and all four carbs showed really low on the tubes. All seemed to be even but just way, way low. I tried turning the idle up but no improvement. What is this indicating and what must I do to raise them. I thought I know how to sync carbs but I guess I don't. Thanks
  25. Looks like the weather is finally going to line out a little so if there is any interest, I will host a day at my house to sync carbs etc. I have a carbtune and will make room so we can sync the carbs with the bike parked inside. I will put May 2 on my calendar. Let me know.
