  1. My '87 model has 80k on her, and I want to go touring. My #3 cable broke where it goes through the adjuster elbow over the carbs. Should I replace all the cables while I have to wait for new parts anyway? It looks like #3 takes most of the abuse anyway. Also, is there any dealers who may have these cables on hand- most seem to have to order everything!
  2. My throttle cable broke going to town to get brake supplies, and I had to set the idle to 3 grand and then nurse it home- TRICKY! Does anyone know a good source for stock cables? Can you repair old ones, or is it worth it? You'd need a huge crimper tool, I'm sure! So for now, brake problems don't matter cause scooter wont go!
  3. OK, I'm looking to figure out what exactly I would need in order to take advantage of the intercom on the 89 Venture. The bike does not come with helmets, headsets or any wires or cables so I have to start from ground zero. Where do I begin? Thanks
  4. Hi Guys and Gals. I've read through a few threads about risers and cable lengths. Some say the stock cables will work, others say get longer cables and one said they rerouted the cables. Well I took a chance and purchased some risers and planned to use the stock cables but they bind way too much for me. I rerouted them behind the forks, but I think the radius is too short and the cables are binding in the sheath. I think I'm really gonna like the risers so they stay. My question...How long are the stock cables and are there over length cables in the black plastic sheath? All I can find are the steel braided and I'm trying to keep the cost down. (I like sleeping in my own bed):buttkick:Thanks in advance for any help or advise.
  5. I put risers on my RSV. The throttle binds open when turned to the right. I tried wiggling the cables around with no success. How to I reroute them? I have no clue, my bike is in pieces right now....
  6. Only took 10 days for my Flanders bars to arrive here in Oz, thanks to Dennis Kirk. They charged me less than $US50 to get them here :happy34:when the other company wanted $US300!! Many , many thanks to Reaney in NH and to Bubber for their help. Just hope the cables are long enough now, there is a lot of pullback on these bars--so keeping my fingers crossed :fingers-crossed-emoall will be okay
  7. I am getting ready to relocate my TCI box. I almost have it released from the current convenient location and I would like to put it on top of the airbox. It sounds like some of you have routed the 2 connector cables up the left (?) side if the airbox. Once disconnected from the TCI is there enough slack in the 2 cables that they can be slid up the side without removing that darn box? How did you secure the TCI to the airbox lid? Also, my connector cables were puked on from the old battery right where the wires enter the white plastic connector. Is there a "best way" to clean that stuff off without damaging the wires? Thanks Kevin
  8. Ok, this is a weird one to me. Lately, first time I try to start the bike, hit starter switch everything goes out, lights dash nada. So pulled the seat, checked the battery, 12.0v. Checked battery cables, all tight. So think the ignition switch is going out on this one. But I do not believe it. So pulled battery cables, made sure they were clean, re-attached, turn ignition key on, have lights and dash is back, hit starter switch everything goes dark again. Ok, now I am believing the battery cables are the culprit. Undo again, re-attached, turn ignition key back on, press starter switch and bike starts up. Go the rest of the day no issues. Next day repeat above scenario. This morning repeat above scenario, but this time on the first attempt I put the hot wire to my trailor lights between the battery post and the bike's hot wire, tighten down, bike starts immediately. Ok, I am , what gives with the battery hot wire. Everything is clean and tight. I believe it is heat related, where the bike starts everything stays tight, but after bike sits over night (cools down), issue arises. Any thoughts ?
  9. For some reason while at the store today my wifes brother decided to try to turn my throttle all the way as far as it would go and broke my plastic around my cables any idea how much thats gonna cost me? Im ready to kill somebody
  10. Im in Canada. I'm trying to find the best place to get aftermarket parts for my 1987 Venture Royale. CURRENTLY: I need throttle cables. Can't find them anywhere? except used on eBay.
  11. Anyone know where to get intercom headset cables? I really need the long one that goes to the passenger location but would like both. Anything I can find does not want to fit as they are not the tight right angle that is needed to fit in that spot.
  12. Are the modded battery cables still available?? The last PM I sent (back in Jan 09) went unread!!
  13. Huh, 2 throttle cables? Are they setup as 1 operates 2 carbs and 1 operates the other 2? Or are they setup in a push-pull fashion? I thought I broke them but the 1 on the backside of the handle bar seems too be fine, the 1 on the frontside was still attached but out of it's cable channel in the grip. I can push that cable but it won't let me pull. And that is why I'm asking the 1st question. Or is it just broke.
  14. My son works for a welding company and has access to #4 cable and connectors, they make there own welding cables. Can some one tell me the length one post has 33" another 36" is this cable length or cable length and connectors. I want to get them made before I take mine off. Thanks, Dale
  15. Taken a long trip this summer and wanted to stock up on parts that might need, such as cables, which always break at inopportune times! So whats the recommendation out there for cables! Is there an upgrade to what comes stock for a 2005 RSTD? Thanks!!
  16. I have been trying to get in touch with Paul, (TupperJ) about a set of his nifty battery cables and have not had any luck. When I checked his profile it looks as if he hasn't posted to this site since October of last year. Has anyone heard from him? Is he OK? My concern is not so much the cables but his well being. Is Paul the only person currently making up the cable sets? So many questions, Earl
  17. Hi Y'all, I think I know the answer, but is there any way to disconnect the EANDS cables at the fork end, or do I have to disconnect it up under the headlight and leave the cables with the forks? Thanks, Jeremy
  18. Hi All, Well, winter has a firm lock here in Newfoundland, and my VR will be sleeping for another 2 - 3 months yet, but I've gotta start thinking about the spring, so I have two questions 1. I want to upgrade my battery cables from stock before the next season... anyone know when I can get the heavier cables now? That slow engine crank really makes me nervous sometimes! 2. I replaced my stator last year, and I know I didn't seal that stator wire up as good as it should have been. It was seeping oil all fall. I read somewhere about a sealant - I think from Yamaha - that could be used. I don't want to be dripping oil next summer, those Harley guys think it's funny! Thanks in Advance!
  19. Greetings! So, I'm thinkin' I need to lube my throttle cables to see if that keeps my Cruise Control from disengaging right as I start to scratch that itch on my... face. Please allow me to 'splain: No, I don't have fringe on my clutch/brake levers. I've owned this 99RSV since early 2007(ish) and as long as I've owned it, the Cruise Control will randomly disenguage on me. ususally within seconds, but sometimes as much as a several minutes after I enguage it. Originally I just assumed it was my... generous surface area adding wind resistance causing the CC to quit. Then I started testing it more sceintifically. It doesn't appear to be wind drag on my beer gut. I proved this by going 55MPH with a 45MPH tail-wind, giving me much less wind drag (going on a diet would take too long). I next thought that maybe one of the cancel switches was just reacting to a bump in the road. Soo.... I picked a nice, level, recently paved stretch of road (which is VERY hard to find in this town) with no bumps or asphalt-snakes. The CC disenguaged at seemingly randomly intervals. I did however notice that my throttle does tend to drag just the tinyiest little bit. Okay... now that I've gone through all that, my ACTUAL question is, what kind of lube should I use on throttle cables. Sorry all, but my wife already beat all of you to the smartarse "throttle cable lube" response. Since tomorrow is Sunday and the scoot-store is closed on Sundays here and I'm entirely too impatient to wait until Monday, I was wondering if there were any good/bad substitutes for throttle cable lube. Discuss...
  20. Does anyone have more information on these "Buddy Rich" cables? I couldn't tell from the comments I found if it is what I want or not...
  21. I'm replacing battery cables as per Squidly's specs on my '83. So far I've got the right side apart and most of the left. Hopefully i'll remember how to put it back together While I have all the trim off, anything I should look at, clean, replace or other. As Rooster said, it's a PITA and I don't care to do it too often. Second, the secondary wires coming of the battery terminals are pretty short, I am debating extending them, perhaps by putting a pull apart connector in it as opposed to straight wiring. Thoughts? Last, I have enough supplies to make another set. If you're intersted let me know. I accept credit cards. Thanks.
  22. What is the best procedure for removing the upper throttle cables from the handlebar so they can be properly lubricated?
  23. Good morning everyone. I am starting a new thread because I have seen several questions on small jumper cables. I purchased a set during a motorcycle show one year. They are about 10ft. long and have nice clamps and a carrying case. On a 1st Gen. the case fits flat in the bottom of the side bags. I have even loaned them here at work to jump a 4cyl. or small 6cyl. car! Here is the link from Cyclegagets: http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/product.asp?Item=BBOOST This is the same thing I have. I don't think you can build a set and get a storage bag on your own for this price. At least not unless you have things laying around. I like having them. Last time, I hooked them to a truck battery and just let it sit for about a half hour before starting. The donor vehicle wasn't even running. We then started the truck and then the bike. Hope this helps. JB
  24. I ordered the Flanders full-back handlebars and plan to put them on my 07 RSTD next week. If any of you have done this and have pics that would be greatly appreciated. NOTICE: it is for an RSTD not a Venture. I need to see how you RSTD guys took off the speedo and re-routed the cables. Also - if you bought new cable that won't help me much 'caue I am going to do this with the existing cables Thanks, Shep
  25. Has anyone used the Barrons 1 1/2 " risers ? The reason Im asking is, they fit my short self well ......BUT ! It streches my throttle cable to the max. Is this the case or is their something I can do to adjust the cables or am I looking for longer cables? I really dont want to take the risers off because they really help me with they handling and control of the bike. 2008 RSV. Thanks "it is what it is" Breeze
