1. All members I have 2 Baron tachometer's 1 is a 3" white face for handle bar mounting. The other one is the Baron color changing brake reservoir mounting system. See picture attachment for style. Brake mount one is slightley used and the 3" is new. Just decided not to use. Joe First with money gets it or them.
2. Two weeks ago I replaced the rear tire and put progressive springs in the forks. Also replaced the rear brake pads while I had everything apart. To compress the pistons in the caliper, I removed the bolt from the rear master cylinder to relieve pressure. Cleaned all brake parts, and bled the line following the factory manual (rear caliper, front caliper, metering valve, in that order). Around town the brakes work fine, but if I don't use them for awhile out on the road get no action from the peddle. It is very soft and depresses quite a ways with no stopping action from the rear/front left. If I 'pump' the peddle it returns enough to stop the bike with just the peddle. The front right is having no problems. I'm not sure what to look at next. It seems to me that if they start out tight and work around town that it wouldn't be the master cylinder, and it can't be brake fade from a misaligned pad heating up because it affects both calipers. Any ideas?
3. OK, here's the symptoms.. This afternoon while waiting at a signal I looked down at my amp gauge, and it shows a deep discharge. The turn signal was on, and the front brake was on. So I had a bunch of lights going on, and the amp meter fell every time the signal blinked, or the front brake was applied.. However... when I applied the rear brake the change needle barely showed any draw, and the rear brake light did light up. Rode it home from the Doc's and never had any trouble starting it, and as long as I didn't use the blinkers or the front hand brake the gauge show'd normal charge. Now I just went out to check things out again, and without starting the engine, I put on the left and right turn signal they lit up but didn't blink. They did show a big battery draw. I fired up the engine and tried them and away they went and blinked like they were supposed to. All lights, including the headlight, were bright, running or not. Any ideas? This is really weird... I might also add that the bike has a new battery.
4. Help. I'm replacing the front brake line and the brake master cylinder on the handle bars emptied out. I'm having problems building the pressure up. The lever won't pump up. Any thoughts? joe
5. Just wondering where is the best place online to buy brake pads for my 88 VR 1300??? Kim
6. Ok I got the 84 out (trailered it to the camp). Yesterday I decided to install the new front tire I had mounted on a spare rim. In the process of cleaning up the front end ( saturated in fork oil ) I decided to remove the front brake pads to clean the brake calibers. At the camp I didn't have the proper needle nose pliers and I managed to break a circle clip the one in the brake pad retaining pin. I assume this has to be in to keep that retaining pin from coming out. Today is Sunday is this a Yamaha only part or can I get lucky at the local ACE hardware. It would be nice to ride today.Dealer not open on Sunday.:confused24:
7. Has anyone bought the speed bleders you can get on E-bay and tried them out and do they work? Joe
8. I need to put some new rubber and brake pads on the front of my 84. Is there anything that might surprise me with this procedure or is it relatively simple? I will be removing front wheel, having dealer put new tire on wheel, and I think I might as well put new brake pads on while I'm at it. (does EBC $32.95 a set sound reasonable?) Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated...
9. Ive just installed a barons lowering kit to my 2000 Venture... Now i cannt get the rear brake to bleed at all. no presure at the pedal but its pushing air and fuild through. tried a vacuum pump no help,,,, im stumped going out to get some new bleed valves to see if that helps any other suggestion will be greatly wanted.... p.s no leaks that i can find either
10. Hi everyone. Can anyone tell me what the brake pads on the newer Ventures are made of? Are they organic, sintered, etc? The fronts on my 07 sound like a snarling box of rocks any time I brake (2500 miles and have done it form virtually mile 0) . I just won some EBC FA179 organics on ebay for next to nothing and I was wondering if the organic pads would be somewhat quieter. Thanks for any opinions and input.
11. I just found out that I have no brake light on my 85 vr when I pull the front brake. I am presuming this is the switch shot in the lever, has anyone done this and what is involved in replacing it? I would like to save a buck or two if I can do it myself. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Brian
12. I picked up my newly aquired 83 venture yesterday. I had bought it knowing it had some exhaust work to be done and having some front brake problems, but supposably the brake problems were fixed. I was a little nervous getting on for the ride home being this is the first time I had ridden a bike of this size. Decided to take the back roads to start out to get the feel for the weight and manuverability of the bike. To my surprise when I came to a stop sign there was almost no front brakes. Since there are rubber hoses that look pretty old on the bike I think I will start with replacing them to steel braided lines. Until these are changed, I think the bike will have to sit.
13. I was having rear wheel lockup when braking hard and couldn't figure out why. Then I read an article on the MSF webb site about an instructor that had alot of students in the advanced rider course that had floorboards, had rear wheel lockup. He found the reason why!! They were lifting up their foot and stomping the rear brake. When you do so you are using not only you calf muscle but you thigh and inertia, thats a lot of pressure. His answer is to keep you heel on the floorboards and pivot foot to the brake leaver and brake with you toe or the end of you boot. It works!!! I have been practicing that procedure and it works. Try doing it and you will build up muscle memory and you will do it in an emergency. So far I have not locked up the rear wheel when doing this. Practice, practice, practice!!!! I hope this will help everyone. tew47
14. Hi To All, Here Is My Problem: The Left Front Caliper Is Not Working At All. The Left Front Rotor Is In Very Bad Shape. After Checking The Threads In Tech. Talk For The First Gen. Vr I Know I Need To Rebuild The Caliper But When I Checked On The Purchase Of A New Lf Rotor I See That The Part Is Discontinued. But The Rf Rotor Is Still Offered. Are We Putting A Rf On The Lf Rotor, Should I Try To Buy A Used One? I Did Notice That I Am Getting Uneven Brake Pad Wear On All Three Calipers, Does This Mean Rebuilds On All Three? And Finally How Many "kits" Do I Need To Do The Rebuilds For The Front Calipers? When Looking At The Part Numbers, There Seem To Be Multiple Part Nos. Listed. I Know The "brake Thing" Has Been So Done Before But I Don't Feel "warm And Fuzzy" About Riding An 850 Pound Sled With Marginal Brakes. Any Help, Used Parts Or Suggestions Would Be Greatly Appreciated. I Hate To Miss This Great Weather But Feel That This Issue Needs To Be Addressed Asap! Thanks Again, Skydoc_17
15. Well we went for our ride today.. Al, Thomas, and myself(Brian)...Now in this first picture you will see 2 Venture riders coming to aid a Harley rider(my friend Al)..... With what tools we had on hand we managed to repair the Harley..Look at the linkage for the back brake... It was actually quite a serious problem but luckily Al was able to lift the brake peddle before it caught on something in the road to catapault him.. Yes as we got closer to the lake Erie shore it got colder and colder(as Carl had said) but we did make it to our destination... As you ride along this Lakeshore road these giant wind turbines are scattered all about the farmers fields, looking very much out of place with the surroundings.. They go on for miles, I have no idea how many there are, I have seen at least 30-40(or more) on a previous longer ride.. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=42.615265,-80.662308&spn=0.215264,0.464172&z=11 Lakeshore road between Port Rowan and Port Burwell.....Can give GPS too if needed..
16. Does anyone know if there is an LED Brake Light kit for the RSTD? I want to switch out the entire brake light assembly, and have a full LED kit. I find the LED lights on other bike just amazing. And it seems like a safety issue as well. Is there an aftermarket kit available that does not require extensive re-wiring? Any help most appreciated. Sonny
17. I have a 2006 TD in White.I always get a little buildup of black either brake dust or residue off the tires on the inside of the bag lids, not ever very bad as I lean just about every day I ride, but very annoying. I was wondering if anyone has tried different pads, or knows any other tricks to lessen or eliminate this problem thanks BTW, this is my first post, and I love all the info I have gotten from everyone's posts so far. Thanks Everyone
18. OK. First of all, thanks to everyone providing input my scraping noise and brake issues. With the suggestions received and the manual, I think I may have found more than one problem. Brakes: I think the pistons were sticking and there may have been some air or crud in the lines. I took the calipers off, took the pistons out and cleaned them all up. Hopefully, I will notice a difference when I put them back together and bleed properly. BTW, I'm glad I checked all that because I now think I had little or no back brakes. (Not something I would have noticed gradually because it was obviously like that when I got the bike.) Driveshaft: This baby needed to be cleaned and greased bad. That's all done. Now I am reassembling and I can't figure out where to put the spacer re: the brake torque stopper plate. The spacer fell out during reassembly. This would have been easier if there were two but I only have one. It's about 1/8 " thick. Does it go between the brake stopper plate and the frame or between the plate and the wheel ? Once again, thanks in advance. Ben
19. What is the difference between DOT3 and DOT4 brake fluid? I want to change the clutch fluid on my wifes 99 RSTD, and I have an almost full bottle of DOT3 in the garage. Can I use it instead of DOT4?
20. A few weeks ago I gave out the number for Bendix brake pads for the Venture. I gave the number as MA113. That is the number for the first generation RSTDs not Ventures. Sorry I gave you the wrong info. I don't know the number for the Venture. tew47
21. Hi, I have an intermittent problem with my brake fluid indicator on the dashboard computerized diagnostics screen. Have verrified that my fulid levels are ok but sometimes get the dash (0) brake fluid low indicator coming on. It seems to happen vaguely associated with steep left turns but not all. The one pulling away from the stop sign at the end of the road at my dads place seems to do it. I winter the bike in my dad's garage and it has happened other years where first time out of there I get the indicator on at that turn. Usually it goes away on its own next ride and doesn't turn up again till the following year. This year however it has been happening more frequently. As I say I have the fluid levels all up to snuff. So I look in my bike manual at the schematic wiring diagagram and it shows the two brake fluid level switches are wired in series with one another to black which I assume is ground. Then in the trouble shooting section I read that to test the switches one should remove both from the master cylinders and test continuity across them. It says that when the swtich units are standing upright (picture shows wires at the bottom) in no fluid there should be zero ohms across them and when turned upside down (wires at the top presumeably), there should be infinity ohms across them. Unless the switches mount upside down, (manual doesn't say) I don't see how both things can be true. Logically, in a series circuit, you'd need both switches closed when all is well. If either of them sense low fluid they should go open interrupting the circuit. Yet the description seems to show the reverse. I tend to beleive the diagram. Any one know for sure which way is up? Any one have similar problems with brake fluid indicator ? I hear that the back of the computer monitor dash board thing is a common place for broken solder connections, I suspect that is where my trouble is, any thoughts? Thanks, Brian H Uxbridge Ont
22. Changed the brake fluid, changed final gear oil, and motor oil, then added clutch fluid (dot 3 brake fluid). Now for some reason my '83s wheel spins as soon as you put it in gear with the clutch engaged??? what the heck did I do or didn't do? I am newer to this site and to the bike and not really what you would call "tech savvy" so any help would be appreciated. If it helps the clutch level was just barely in the sight glass untill I filled it. Thanks for any help in advance.
23. Ok, my head is spinning. After the last couple posts I have made, all the replies I have gotten, thinking about a couple different issues I am having/have had with my bike and reading the following posts: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13582 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13218 Among several others... Here are my thoughts... PLEASE pipe in with your thoughts. When I bought my 83 VR (about a month ago), the right front brake rotor was COVERED in what I thought was brake fluid. It was so soaked that the front brake wouldn't even slow the bike down, not to even talk about stopping it. The guy I bought it from told me that it was leaking brake fluid from between the two caliper halves. I thought, 'Ok I will fix that'. I needed to get it passed on state inspection, so I cleaned up all of the fluid from the brake rotor, the caliper and the pads REALLY good and took it in for inspection. It passed fine and the front brake worked great. When I got home I thought to myself, if there was that much fluid on the rotor, the front brake resevior must be low. I carefully cleaned the outside of the resevior, removed the screws and pulled off the cover. It is completely full. I am bewildered, but content that maybe the problem will re-show itself making diagnosis easier. After a couple hundred miles, the brake rotor is still completely dry and the front brake resevoir is still completely full. Now, another issue I am expiriencing is the apparent bottoming out of the front end when I hit normal road bumps. And sometimes cornering feels really wierd (nice description, huh?). I checked the air in the front end with the CLASS system and it seems fine at 14 psi. Now I am wondering if the fluid was folk oil, and if the bottoming out and shaky cornering are a result of either no fork oil in the right fork or uneven fork oil levels in the two front forks. What do you think? Is there a way to check the fork oil level in the forks? How do I add fork oil to the forks if they are low? Sorry this is so long. Please forgive a "newbie". I also wanted to express my thanks to all of you who are so willing to offer advice. This website is GREAT and I am so glad to be a part of it. -Mike
24. I noticed tonight that my cruise control will cancel if I put the foot brake pedal on. However, if I pull in the clutch or if I apply front brake the cruise will not release. I thought I would ask the knowledgeable group if anyone has experienced this or would have a pretty good idea where to start looking. Will get out the service manual tomorrow and have a look. Thanks.
25. Can I get brake pads from Autozone, O'Rielly's, etc. for Venture or do I have to get OEM pads? MamaYama is proud of theirs. I do not want to jeopardize saftey but I would think there has to be something cheaper.
