  1. Don't have any idea what he wanted though, but it was sure good to spend a wee bit of time with 'im.
  2. Hi All, A friend of a friend is selling his 2001 XVS1100 VSTAR (see pics below) for $2500.00. It has A Harley Headlight and Running Lights, Hard Saddle Bags, Cobra Exhausts, and rear Air Suspension with onboard compressor. It has 6100 miles on it. It is a bit loud for my tastes but Ebay has stock pipes cheap. If anyone knows anything about these bikes, PLEASE let me know, I know very little about the big twins. Thanks for your help, Earl
  3. Well, I have found a 1986 Royal Star with a tarp over it under a lean-to. Has not been run in close to 10 years. Rubber is shot that I can see, a couple of bee nests.... Paint job is ok considering the tarp has blown a bit..... But the amazing thing is this: IT HAS A BIT OVER 1000 MILES!!!! The guy wants to sell it. What do you think it is worth???? It will need some work sitting like that, but what a great find!! I am thinking of getting it for my wife. She rides the 1100 v-star right now but has been looking at the roadstars. I would like her on this bike. Anyone that wants to can email me with info on that year bike. barrowfamily@bresnan.net Dennis
  4. Well folks, same as many of you, I've patiently awaited the introduction of the new '09 RSV. I said all along that the ONLY difference for '09 would be the color. I think that many of us felt that would be the case but I DO expect to see something new for 2010. What will it be? Who knows. At any rate, most of you know that I've been thinking about a new bike for some time now so today I finally bit the bullet and can happily say that it is sitting in my garage. Brand new 2008 model. Black/Silver. And with that, I will leave you all to speculate. As for me, I'm going for a little ride. More info and pictures later this evening.
  5. Hi All! I don't know whether this is the right place to post, or not... I apologize in advance for the length of the post. Anyway, I am looking at the possibility of buying a black 2002 Midnight Venture and am trying to learn a bit more about it. It is pretty well loaded chrome-wise but I don't think there have been any mods other than aftermarket exhaust (which I didn't like and would return to stock). The previous owner scooped out the seat and I would have to get an original since I am 6'3". Kury grips would replace the stockers. I have been riding a 2004 Roadstar for the past year and a half and have put quite a few miles on it. The Roadie is a great cruiser but lacks something for touring. Bag space, comfort and amenities ensure that any longer trips are solo - wife isn't happy riding any distance. The bike I'm considering has 36000 km on it (~23000 mi). Paint is in reasonable shape but needs a good buffing. Overall condition seems to be pretty good but I don't really know what to look for in terms of potential problems. The previous owner spent some money on bling but I don't think he really maintained it properly - maybe he didn't know how or just didn't bother. I'll be getting the service and warranty records from the dealer so I should be able to find out whether the appropriate routine service was done! It does make a bit of a ringing noise in the clutch area at certain RPMs but I understand that this is VERY common and not particularly a problem (other than an annoyance). 1) Is there any reasonable fix for the clutch noise? 2) How difficult is it to adjust the carbs (syncing etc)? 3) Any recommended aftermarket (non-cosmetic) improvements (i.e. the Roadstar benefited greatly with an aftermarket breather (Baron BAK) and rejetting) Anything similar for the Venture? 4) Any issues to look out for with respect to the engine, cooling system, shaft drive etc. (Major mechanical) 5) Suspension issues or bearings? 6) Specific maintenance issues other than the usual - brakes, tires, oil, chasis lube... 7) Comments regarding comfort, noise, vibration etc compared to the R* (or other tourers like the HD Ultra Classic) 8) How is the "fit" for distance riding for someone who is less compact than most? (Tall with long legs) Would highway pegs be an important addition? How's the amount of room for the passenger? 9) What's the nicest bit of bling to add? A new (to me) bike needs a little present to feel welcome in a new home! 10) Anything else I should know??? I really like the idea of a touring bike that still looks like a motorcycle. While a Wing may be in my future, it will wait for a few years! Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions. Also posted at Delphi - never hurts to get as wide a variety of opinions/comments as possible! Ross
  6. What are you guys thinking the best idle speed is for the '85 VR. 800 just seems a bit high to me. How 'bout it?
  7. Hello all - I did a quick search/read but am still a bit unsure. Are there risers available for a 2006 RSTD?

Gary @ Annie: it's good to hear that everything is going great with the treatments, Was just curious if my old campsite is still open, if not one that is a bit further south, so that the hiway traffic muffles the camp noise, I will see you in a couple of weeks
  9. '87 I know it all depends on riding habits but I have 58K miles on the bike with original clutch. Do you all have more miles with original clutch, I'm very easy on it. to give you an idea, I have two cars with 300K miles on their original clutches. I was bogging a bit in 5th gear and accelerated and I thought I heard the engine rev a bit. I didn't reinact it to see what would happen so I'm not sure if I sensed something that wasn't there.
  10. I have owned this Joe Rocket Meteor Jacket for almost 4 years now. It is a black on black jacket. Jacket is in great condition, never gone down. Jacket has a full sleeved thermal liner, which makes it very warm for fall or winter riding. With the liner removed, the jacket can be worn in the warmest of weather. 2 air vents in the sleeves provide much ventilation, keeping you cool, while protecting you from road rash and the elements. There is a very large exhaust vent on the back to assist in keeping yu cool and dry. Jacket has no rips, no tears. There are 2 issues with the item, the zippers on the sleeve vents are broken, I opened them 4 years ago, never had reason to close them, and they oxidized. So the vents are always open, there is velcro around them, so if you wanted to shut them, you have to just close the velcro. All other zippers are fully working with no issues. Also, some areas of the jacket are a bit sun-faded, and look a bit brown. This is because I ride, and I ride alot. I have never been on the bike without my full gear. All in all a fantastic jacket, that may save your skin one day, literally. So why am I selling it? Well, I bought the jacket about 55 lbs ago, so my "loss" is really your gain. I will attach some pics of the jacket soon. I might list it on eBay, but before I did I wanted to see if any of the group here might be interested. The jacket new was $250. I will take the first $50 OBO. PM me if you are interested. Sonny
  11. I was looking for something a little while ago and ran across this guy's stuff on Ebay. First person I thought of was Freebird with his saddlebag problem (probably solved by now). Anyway, he says he's selling off a bunch of his NOS & used parts ; there seems to be a good bit of plastic in his list. Thought you all might have a need. I don't vouch for him or his prices, it's just info. Hope somebody finds something they need. http://stores.ebay.com/Worthington-Sports-Center-inc
  12. Just wondering if the bags and trunk from an '86 will connect right up to an '85. I can't imagine retooling for bags that are a little bit larger.
  13. Gonna play hookie form work thursday and take Mini on the SS bike to Staten Island to visit Family. Any members in the area want to call me I will have my call on and if you make it to SI we can hopefully get together for a little bit. Jeff
  14. My son Matthew and I went for a nice little four day ride a couple weeks ago and ended up seeing a lot of beautiful country and earned our Iron Butt Association SaddleSore. We left Seal Beach, California (just south of Los Angeles) at 11:20 pm on Sunday, June 22nd headed for Denver, Colorado for our IBA SaddleSore. The odometer read 29899 miles. Matthew had managed to get about three hours sleep just before we left, but I had only managed about an hour's nap. But I was pumped up and determined. We had a short stop in Barstow, California for gas, and made Las Vegas by 4:00 am. I've seen enough of the I15 from LA to Vegas so it was nice to get that part done in the dark. We watched the sun rise shortly before we got to St George, Utah where we stopped for gas and breakfast. Before I go on too much, I have to talk about the bike. I have an '05 Yamaha Royal Star Venture, and that was just about the perfect bike for an Iron Butt ride. There may be better for one up, but with a passenger, I don't think you can do much better. The stock seats are as comfortable as can be imagined for both of us. I have the rider backrest from Utopia that I couldn't do without, and I made some armrests for my son because I knew he would be sleeping off and on. I took some arm rests off an office chair and used duct tape to attach them to the grab bars. They didn't look the best, but they saved me about 300 bucks and worked just fine. Matthew would fall asleep for about 15 minutes at a time before I'd get too nervous and jab him. I already had close to 10K miles on the current Avon tires, and after getting home still have plenty of tread left. I personally think bikes should get a lot better gas mileage than we do, but I couldn't complain too much. I think about the worst I got was in the low 30's when I was running at 90+ mph for about a hundred miles. When I could keep it to 70 mph or a little less, I'd get in the mid 40's. I was a little worried about the high altitudes, but I experienced no problems with power or mileage because of it. All things considered, and probably especially cost, the Venture is an excellent touring bike and I thoroughly enjoyed mine those four days. Once into Utah, I decided to do a few miles helmetless. As we left a rest area, I noticed rain clouds ahead but couldn't tell if we would hit it or not. Of course we did. At first the cooling off felt good, and my shield kept most of the rain off my face. Then I started getting pelted and it kind of stung. I wasn't sure what it was till I looked on my shirt sleeve and saw ice bouncing off me. It was hail! Go figure. It only lasted about five minutes tho, and then the rain for about twenty more and we were in the heat again. At the next stop in the small town of St Joseph, Utah I put the helmet back on and kept it on. I enjoyed the feeling without for awhile, but it did cause more fatigue which I didn't need. We finally got into Colorado and stopped in Grand Jucntion for gas and a late lunch at 4:40pm. By now I was feeling the affects of little sleep, and those last few miles before Grand Junction were a bit of a blur. The road became more scenic after that, and I managed to wake up okay. We gassed up in Glenwoods Springs, and then the road became even better for a freeway. We passed through Vail and saw the ski slopes and the air was a bit cooler. All of the riding was high elevation, with the highest I think at about 11K feet. We started seeing a few deer on the sides of the road so I slowed a bit. Traffic started getting a bit heavier as we neared Denver, and about the same time the sun set and evening was upon us. We rode to the southwest part of the city where our destination was a Hyatt off the I25. We arrived at the hotel at 8:50 pm (our time) and had exactly 31000 miles on the odometer. That means the odometer put us at 1101 miles in twenty one and a half hours. Mapquest had the miles at about 1040. I got the Front Office Manager to be our end witness, and the staff was all quite amazed that we had just come straight through from Southern California. I work for Hyatt and have a friend at that hotel, so he set us up with a real nice room with a jacuzzi tub. A quick shower and dinner came first, and then that tub sure felt good. I sort of remember letting my family know we were there safe, and then I was sound asleep. Matthew told me in the morning he had fallen asleep in the tub till about 1:00 am. So I still have to send in my papers to IBA, but we did it. This is my second 1000 miles in 24 hours, but the first one was in 1981 and not certified. For those of you who have done one, I think you would agree that my 14-year old son earning his as a passenger is really quite a feat. I have to get back to work now, but I'll continue again later with our more "leisurely" ride home. I'll give a little heads up and say we did 2404 in four days. And yes, we did enjoy every bit of it. Okay, the triple digit temps on the last day was a bit of a drag, but other than that.....
  15. The one thing that throughs me a bit when I get my 89 VR after riding one of my other bikes is how at low speed manuvering the feeback from the handlebars feels very squishy. In fact if you have the bike on the center stand and wobble the handlebars as if they were going into a tankslapper you can really feel the movement in the hanelbars vs the wheel. My understanding is that it is the rubber mounting of the handlebars but it seems to be a bit too much in my opinion. Do you guys have the same feel? Have you jsut got used to it or can it be modified? thanks all Bob
  16. I have an 83 XVZ12 that tipped over after stopping, "foot slipped out". The bike was gently laid on it's right side. Only visable damage was a small scuff on the upper fairing. My problem is this. It seems to run just a bit doggie when under throttle, when I get on the throttle at about 55-60 it boggs a bit then picks up, almost like a turbo kicking in. Another problem is that my cruse control will not stay engaged more than a few seconds, when I can get to stay on it won't accel with the acc button any more, at least not like it did. Could this be a vacume problem or a fuel problem? Everything was fine until the tip over. HELP! Chris.
  17. Found the following at a couple local shops...gonna check them out on the weekend if they haven't been sold. Anyone from around here check them out already? I know the prices might be a bit higher than comparable in the USA but.... http://www.buysell.com/root/detail/BC/Motorcycles_1001_1500cc/4810/68465903/2002_YAMAHA_VENTURE_60600kms_1300.aspx http://www.buysell.com/root/detail/BC/Motorcycles_1001_1500cc/4810/68578103/1999_YAMAHA_ROYAL_STAR_VENTURE_64260kms.aspx
  18. Ran across a guy on a Goldwing with a windshield wiper. I asked him if it scratched his windshield and he said it had a little bit, but not much. He said it worked pretty good. RandyA
  19. I am on the fund raising committee for my Fire Department. Last year,we got a deal from a local dealer and raffled off a brand new Cadillac, sold all the tickets and made a bit of money. This year, we decided to do something a bit different. A local collector agreed to sell us a 1970 Chevy Chevelle, 350ci with a 4 speed, fully restored and gorgeous. So I guess I'll be investing quite a few bucks in raffle tickets.$100 a pop, only 500 tickets printed. Might be expensive if I win, gotta build a bigger garage.:fingers-crossed-emo:fingers-crossed-emo
  20. Anyone in the Farmington New Mexico area? I am here for about 2 1/2 months working and was able to ride down. I pointed the bike down a paved county road today and had a great ride, but did not see another person for about 45 miles and loved it, but got a bit nervous not knowing the area and it was a bit warm, high 90's. Would love a riding partner to show me the local roads. Dennis, in New Mexico, from Montana. If so, give me a call..... 406-261-7015, or email: barrowfamily@bresnan.net
  21. I am finally starting to catch my breath just a bit. Thank all of you so much for showing up and making the day a huge success. It seems to grow a bit each year and Eileen and I really enjoy doing this for all of you. My biggest regret is that I never have time to visit and get to know each of you the way I would like to. This thing has grown to the point that I am now going to have to try and figure out a way to organize it a bit better. V7Goose and I were talking about it late Saturday night and he had some good ideas on how I might be able to do that. We were both afraid that some of you didn't get things done to your bike that you would like to and it bothers me that any of you came with expectations of getting things done that we didn't get to. We will try to do better in the future. I think that if we get organized and started earlier in the morning, get some lanes set up for different jobs and just generally organize it better, we can be much more productive. It would be great to get everything done earlier in the day and then actually have time to do a nice group ride to cap things off. At any rate, I had a lot of fun and hope that you did to. I hope that us catering the lunch was OK with everybody. We have always cooked hamburgers and etc. in the past but it's just getting too big for that to be practical. I actually went riding yesterday. GaryN is still here in the Space Shuttle so he and I jumped on the bikes yesterday and got a couple of hundred miles in. It was a bittersweet evening as he sincerely felt that he needed to go back and visit the site of his accident. We did that and he was even able to meet with one of the paramedics that was on the scene of the accident. Like I said, it was a bittersweet ride but something that Gary felt he really needed to do in order to continue the healing process and was another step in finding some closure. Even with that, we found some nice back country roads and it was a great ride. I am thankful that I was able to do this with him and felt very honored that he asked me to accompany him. Now it's time to get back to work. STILL not sure where I'm going this week and have about decided to not leave until late this evening or even early tomorrow morning. Sorry I got so behind with my emails and PMs but am about to get caught up now. Again, thanks to those of you who attended, I hope you all had a nice time and now it's time to start planning for NEXT YEAR.
  22. I changed the oil on my bike yesterday. It took exactly one gallon of oil. I noticed that the oil darkened quite a bit after I let the bike run for a few minutes. There must be alot of oil that cannot be drained in the tranny/crankcase during a routine oil change. I believe that the bottom bolt on the tranny also will drain the oil from the tranny but mine is hard to get to. Any suggestions on how to get rid of that last bit of oil or do I just ride and get used to having a bit of old oil mixed in with the new?
  23. My new bike arrived in one piece today, with a great deal of thanks to 86er, Todd Magill. He did a lot of work to get me this bike, and I want to thank him. It even came with a little bit of Georgial clay:) As long as I'm talking about the great members here, I'd also like to thank NKBjones, Nathan Jones for sending me a lowering kit for my 05 RSTD. Tough call

I haven't been here in a while, but I've been busy. One of my best friends packed it in just before Christmas. First year I had the RSTD I rode down to Norfolk VA to spend a couple of days with him and get in some riding. I knew he was fighting some health issues, but I didn't know he was as bad off as he was. It came as a complete surprise frankly, but he left me his black '05 Road King Classic and his almost new F150. I knew he had bought the HD last summer, but I didn't even know about the truck. Another close friend drove me down in January and we picked them up (the estate needed them out of there quickly). I really like the RSTD and had no plans to replace it, probably ever. I have put almost 600 miles on the RK in the last couple of weeks trying to make up my mind about it. For those of you that haven't had the pleasure, the RK is old school compared to an RSTD, but certainly a hoot to ride, competent, comfortable, a bit less bulk to paddle around, and seems reliable. It's fuel injected, has the cruise control I got used to, and a few neat accessories and a lot of chrome: I gotta say it's a beautiful thing. That and the fact that it was Bobbie's bike, I don't think I can bear to part with it now. Man this is gonna hurt!
  25. What happened i told the wife i was staying home to do my paper's that need to get done and guess what hap pended. Ya nice weather and a message poof i was off did a little over a 115 miles what a great day and i found these two bikes one old clunker and a nice 2nd Gen. I'm not sure but the one looks alot like a pre first Gen.:rotf: any one know who they are as i was a bit worried about the old bike making it back home on its own with all its parts falling off and rattling had a good time and nice meeting you all Dray
