If Bret Favre had a 1st Gen. VR, he could have pushed it forward about 6 or 7 yards in the GAPING HOLE he had directly in front of him, instead of passing that darned interception!!

I was wondering if anyone has lowered a first gen. I would like to get mine down 1"-1.5" all the way around. If you did it, how? and did it handle ok?

Hope this keeps someone from getting stranded (or worse) on their 1st Gen. Check the short throttle cables - from the plastic junction box on left of the frame (where cruise cable connects) - to the carb assy. Mine pull side was frayed to within 2-3 small strands remaining where it hooks to the carbs. If it had let loose on the road it would not be a fun walk home. I only caught this Sunday during my first carb off cleaning. Fairing is removed now (was actually really easy), but I think you could inspect this in place with a flashlight. Look up between the left side intake manifolds, you may see the cable to the carb linkage coming down out of a tube, thats where it frays. I since found posted elsewhere here these tend to let go at 40-60K on 1st Gens. Mine has 61K. Had to dig to find this info, so hopefully this puts it in a more prominent place. Snow is at least good for one thing - maintenance........ Can't wait to get the old girl back on the road with her new clean carbs, Diaphraghms, valve adjust, plug wires etc.

If anyone is going to need a valve shim kit and tool in the next week or so, let me know. Dingy has borrowed mine and he could ship it to someone else as easy as he could send it back to me. Its good for 1st gens and 2nd gens.

Anyone had any dealings with cyclepartswarehouse.com out of Texas. I was noticing their prices were cheaper on some of the 1st gen items then Flatouts were so I thought I would give them a try. Thanks.. Rick F.

This is my week to work in Omaha. So I was out getting parts to repair a machine and spotted a white Venture at the junction of N. 30th and Sorensen Pkwy at 11:45 am. Not good with years, but it was a 1st gen. Nice day out in the 50's already. Hope you enjoyed the ride. Bryan

My reserve antifreeze tank gets harder to read, darker, as it gets older (could not be my eyes). I imagine we all have the same problem for the first gens, even with the brights of lights my wrench could not reach it. So I took his advice: 3/4'' dowell, 12 & 1/4" long, top mark (high Mark the bottom from the top of the stick, ) nitched at 9 & 1/8th "; for the low mark, 10 & 7/8". I figure that is accurate enough, but might be off a little and better measured on a reserve tank OFF the bike and in natural light. Just thought I'd pass this tidbit along for other lucky 1st gen riders! JackZ

I will have to double check, not sure if that mileage is correct. I could have sworn I heard 50k, but could be wrong. Super clean bike though. I know the dealer has a couple questions since they aren't as familiar w/ the 1st gens. I will see if I can get them and post them for him. I know 1 of them has to do w/ the box that is on the front right side down by the brake caliper. It was something along the lines of if there is a way to make an adjustment. I can't completely tell you what the question is since I don't know what that box is for. Looks like they have the displacement wrong too. 1st Gen

In the 80's we had a great choice when it came to tour bikes. Every maker had one and the powertrains were all different. Now all we have is Harleys and Harley clones. I like the 1st Gen because of the luxuries with sport-tour handling. I didn't think there was really a replacement. I stand corrected.

I am thinking about going back to full coverage insurance on my 83 Venture, especially since I have fixed all the plastic and repainted it, just wondering how many people are carrying full coverage insurance on their 1st Gen. I know the blue book value isnt very high, but if it does get totaled by me, I want to get a little cash for it, dont want to write off the whole bike...............

Hello to all. Just a quick note. I will be starting production again the 1st week of December. I have tried to keep track of all who want cables. I will put up a thread or a classified add and start gathering names after Thanksgiving. We are moving this week and next so I won't pay attention until after that. I don't want to miss anyone so I figure an official thread with a by screen name list will work the best. Thanks so much folks. JB

Personally, I prefer the 1st gen ventures because im more into the full dress touring style of the honda, over that of the harley. My next bike probably will be a second-gen venture(i love this motor). But in my opinion, i just like the 1st gens the best.

Saw a Maroon 1st Gen MkII parked next to Harpoon Willies bar in Williams Bay, Wisconsin (Lake Geneva area) on Sunday 11/08/09 about 3 pm nice looking bike with Wisconsin plates. Anyone of us?

Yup, i'm selling my 1986 Venture Royale. it's up in the classifieds. I'm sick of working on it. I don't have the time or the mechanical knowledge required to hunt down the demons. I just pray someone from here gives it a good home so I can then go get another 1st Gen that isn't going to require as much work. Maybe then I'll be able to make it to more than one meet & Eat every three years.

Couple of ??? Have you raked your front forks? if so why? Do you have drum brakes? if so did you delink your front/back brake? if not, & you have drum brakes is the original rear master cylinder adequate in applying the rear brakes? :canada:Yes! I have aquired another 1st gen.........a trashed 84 with what I think is a salvagable custom built bolt up TRIKE kit. Once I tear into it & its a go the 90VR will be triked. :canada:

I have one little problem remaining with my 1st Gen. The CB was working when I took her down for the makeover, now it is not working,at least some of it isnt. It powers on, transmitt icon comes on when I push to talk, and when I adjust the squelch that icon shows loc/dis..........but I am not getting any sound out of the speakers. I have checked all the connections on the cb and all the connections where they plug into the amplifer. I am stumped, its not a big deal, but I would like it to work like it did before........anyone else ever have this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

For anyone that might be interested, there is a real nice light brown 1st Gen thats been sitting out for sale since early summer. Its just outside Friendship,NY,and I've been going by it 6 times a week on my route. There isn't room to park my truck safely to get more information. If anyone wants to see it it,take Route 275 south out of Friendship about 1 mile on the left side.If you get to the hamlet of Nile, you missed it.As I would rather look cool than go fast,I have a 2nd Gen Royal Star, but for any speedy would-be reprobate 1st Gen'ers,it might be worth a look.Herb.

This is a mostly true story... After passing a particular ranch about 25 miles west of Houston many times in the past few months, I had been noticing a red 'something' sitting in a metal storage shed about 500 yds. off the main road. One day I just decided I couldn't stand not knowing what it was any longer. I found the road that lead down to the ranch. Long, winding, washboarded gravel. After crossing all the cattle guards and a couple of fields, I turned the corner and there it was, in all its glory. It was showing its age a little but the big 4 cylinders were sitting there waiting to come back to life. I noticed two brand new ME880 tires and the bright red, hand covered seat that I could see from the highway. A couple cows came over to check me out while I was entranced with my discovery. A few minutes later I heard a tractor come into the pasture and head my way. I met the nice gentleman that owned the property and the bike. We had a nice discussion about the bike which he said belonged to his son for years, but that he had lost interest and left it with him. The gentleman was in his late 60's and said he didn't ride any longer, but he hated to see the bike go to waste so he had taken it to a yamaha dealer to have a little work done. It had new carb boots, tires, and a tune up. He reached over and picked the keys off a nail in the corner post and started it up. Wow! It sounded smooth and strong! It had some signs of age and had been down on its side at least once but the damage was very minor and everything appeared to be straight and true. He said his wife had made the new red seat cover and she was proud of her work. I can't tell you how happy I was that he decided to let me buy the wonderful bike at a very reasonable price! I'm a 1st Gen owner!! Never thought I would say that! And I must admit it is faster than my 2nd gen... I did mention it is a 1ST GEN Vmax... right? :rotf: Here are a couple pics.
