  1. Anyone using this model of GARMIN GPS? I have the chance to get a new one for $120. Before tossing the $$$ out I'd appreciate any honest feedback on this model. Regards.......Boomer
  2. Well I don’t know if you are suppose to get excited about these things but here goes. My Cell phone died on me so I had to replace it. I looked around and decided that I could use a smartphone because it would replace my Palm Pilot that I’ve used for many years and I’d only be carrying one device instead of two. This is where is gets exciting. I started looking at the iPhone but my carrier isn’t offering that one and I’m windows based. I still have a contract for another year and a bit. HTC has a new phone called the Touch Diamond. AWESOME. It has Windows Mobile 6.1 and Mobile Office. Now I can use Word, Excel and Powerpoint on my Phone. It also has WiFi which means I can check in here from any hotspot without using air time. Facebook and Youtube are very easy as well as e-mail. I can get a data plan so that I could use these anywhere but that gets expensive. Another cool part is what they call an accelerometer which allows the unit to know what position it is in. It will rotate the screen from portrait mode to landscape mode in any screen that I want to do that just by turning the unit. It is so sensitive that there is a game called Teeter which is like the old Labyrinth game (wooden box with two knobs and a maze with a steel ball). Gotta try it to believe it. Man I love technology! Now comes the main reason I’m excited. This thing as a GPS built in. Telus sells their navigation system as so many $ a month which is pretty good and the unit comes with Google Maps which uses data. BUT I got Garmin XT Mobile software which actually turns MY PHONE into a Garmin GPS. I can use MapSource to draw out a route on my PC and then upload it to the phone. I also tried TomTom which works very well but doesn't have the ability to work on the PC and upload to the phone. I liked some the TomTom day to day features but overall the Garmin works better for what I want to do with it. This gets even better. I’ve been using Ms Streets & Trips for years and am very comfortable with it. I just took a route that I used this past summer and transferred it using Babble to the MapSource software (amazingly easy) and then uploaded to my phone. It worked flawlessly. Bottom line. I now have a smartphone, contact manager (Outlook), Internet access, games, mp3 player, mini computer, AND a Garmin GPS in my pocket. WOW!!! Oh and I can even use it as a level. Wayne
  3. I have a new Nolan N103 N-Com helmet. I want to install a headset to communicate with my '02 RSV audio system (CB and aux audio) as well as my Zumo 550 GPS paired with my cell phone. I've found 2 options and want to know if anyone has experience with either to tell me which is best! I can install a Nolan bluetooth headset with a multimedia wire to my 5 pin audio connector... or, I can use a J&M headset and a J&M integrator which will integrate (hardwire) my GPS to the audio system along with a lower wire for my 5 pin connector. Any suggestions? Thanks, Art
  4. Just like to know where the best place would be to get a Garmin 450 GPS.
  5. Has anyone got A Gps that's made for bikes (weather proof) or a web site I can get info on one? Also took my first 300 Plus mile since i got rstd last weekend and it was great in the Ga mnts. 2 up and 50mpg Is that possible?? One more thing while Im at it I see USA maps where everyone has rode . Where might I find one of these as well. Thank Kelly
  6. Friend of mine recently bought a refurb off e-bay. Seems like a pretty good unit. Normally sells for around $300 if I remember right and they are selling them for $110 + free shipping. I got to check it out while riding and works pretty well. One question I have about this unit or any GPS for that matter is say I want to go from Indy to South Dakota, but want to take specific roads, can I program the GPS to go only on the roads I want to go on instead of having the GPS pick the route for you? I see they have the Quest2 now also. Garmin lists it for $750.00. The same place on e-bay sells the refurb for $185 if I remember right. Garmin didn't have the price listed on just the Quest. I was reading all the stuff on the Garmin web-site, but for things like what I am asking, its' all greek to me. Thanks.
  7. I want to mount my GPS and Sirius and I have reviewed the Ram mounts that come highly recommended in the post and they are nice, but it seems to be too much stuff on the bars. I wanted to make use it the dash space where the front speakers are. Is anyone using the speaker vents to mount Sirius or GPS? I have seen vent mount for use in the cage. Is anyone making use of that method? Thanks, Bug
  8. After much to-do, I finally settled on a Garmin C580. Got a good deal ( I think) at ~$183 new in the box..not refurbed. I just couldn't bring myself to pay 2-3 times that for a Zumo. (or any of the other m/c specific units) Bought the appropriate RAM mount components to swap the unit back & forth between bikes and over to the truck on occasion. I still have to add aux power outlets to both bikes for the pwr plug (It's got some integral gizmo for MSNdirect). OK....yada, yada, yada....bluetooth...blah, blah, blah and so on! Now, to the point! The C580 (not being a motorcycle friendly unit) has a pop-on, pop-off ball-socket on the back, that I wouldn't want to trust to resist a sharp bump in the road and not be rolling down the road after me at 60mph or so. I recall seeing some GPS post recommending tethering GPS units to avoid such an incident as I described above. The question is ....HOW? So, here I am.....asking for opinions or recommendations/ideas as to tethering solutions. I have a couple of ideas, but I'd like you folks input before I decide what I'm going to do. How'd you do yours (if you did), or maybe one you saw that was neat or whatever!!! Thanks for any input!!!!
  9. Does anyone have the numbers to the upper and lower bearings and races for the triple tree. I want to minimize down time and reduce costs a bit. After my little shake and bake, I won't feel comfortable until I replace them. Oh, Mavrik:stickpoke: - about that keeping 1st Gens out front so you wouldn't run away from them. Masterguns said to remind you that my death wobble hit at 110mph in 4th gear. And you know my speedo is right on because we checked it against your GPS that morning several times. I think the wobble got triggered by cutting across the air wake from the front of the semi. I remember a slight gust as I replay the bronco ride. THat and a groove or tar snake would have started it. Weird but un-nerving. JB
  10. Most store clerks I have talked with dont really know about GPS. So I could use a little help. I am 72yrs old and up until a small stroke a few yrs back I was fairly compitent with electronics. Now I have some problems...mostly memory. I dont want the super slab, quickest, shortest route to destination. I was wondering if there is a GPS system that can be programmed to give points of interest along the way between destinations? I would like to know if I am going to be passing within a couple of miles of the biggest ball of twine or if there is a scenic route less traveled? Is there a GPS system that offers that or anything close? Any suggestions on GPS Systems and user friendly systems as well would be greatly appreciated.
  11. Question: I just ordered a Garmin C330, GPS --- Need information as to Which Mounting system is the best to go with ?? for the 1st Gen. Any Opinions ??? I'm all Ears for once !!

  13. I cleaned out the closet and put ads in the classifieds tonight for a Lowrance GPS and Diamond R Passenger Highway Pegs. Just thought if anyone is in the market for either check out the classifieds.
  14. On the gps's with ear phone plug in, is it possible to get a cord to connect into my 86 royale vox so I can hear the text to speach ? I want to be able to hear the gps say--In 500 yrds turn left on Elm--through the headsets. Thanks for any help. Gil
  15. Just a short note. I posted this info on the other forum I participate in, so for some of you this may be a repeat/you already knew this. There are several POI files you can add to your Garmin, TomTom, and Magellan GPS units. POI files are Points Of Interest. I found a good source of these files here: http://www.poi-factory.com/ You can add such things as all the USA Yamaha Dealers, Wal-Marts, Starbucks, Campgrounds, Festivals, Radio Stations Frequencies in your area, Lighthouses, Antique Stores, Scanner Freqs or Amateur Radio Repeaters, Cemeteries, Golf Courses, Nightclubs...whatever. Most of these files are free, but a few (like redlight camera locations) require a small 'donation'... I loaded over 30,000 POI's into my 2 Garmin NUVI's, and this is in addition to the Members names that we got a while back, from, Pilot, I believe, if memory serves. For the Garmin, its simply a matter of downloading a free POI loader, then installing that on your computer, then hooking up the Garmin to your computer via the USB cable, then downloading the POI files that you want. Magellan and TomTom have similar procedures, but MAY involve an extra step or two. Pretty slick and now I can get addresses, phone numbers, and locations of thousands of places, and businesses, that are not included in the stock POI file included with the Garmin. This Venture website is full of members who like to modify or tweak these bikes...you can do the same with a GPS. Have fun!
  16. Go directly to the source for the right answers !!! I need some imput from fellow motorcycle riders. I have a zumo 550 on my RSV (love the GPS), I can buy an antenna/receiver (GMX-30) to get satellite radio music/sports, Accessing and controlling it through the GPS unit. However this thing cost over $200... Anyone using one ? And is it worth it ? I don't mind spending the money for the unit if it is a good product and works well. (FYI...I've never had, or heard satellite radios) This would keep me from mounting a seperate xm radio + antenna... Anyone using one of these ? and how do you like it ???? Thanks Sterling T.
  17. OK, I NEED YOUR INPUT AGAIN..IM LOOKING TO BUY A GPS FOR MY RIDE..WHAT DO YOU USE AND WHY..WHATS THE BEST VALUE OUT THERE..IM CONFUSED AGAIN..SO MANY CHOICES..I KNOW I CAN TRUST YOU GUYS TO POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION..:mo money:WHAT ABOUT MOUNTS?
  18. I bought a tomtom one. I need to get a handle bar mount. There seems to be 2 different ones. One is a short mount that bacically aimes the gps unit straight toward you and a longer (taller mount) Which do you hace and wich works best. Thanks, Steve
  19. After installing my new GPS unit earlier. I am noticing that my speedometer is out a bit from my actual speed as calculated by my GPS. I have heard that the GPS units are incredibly accurate. My '06 RSTD seems to be out on the high side. When my speedometer reads 120, my actual speed from GPS is 112. This can't be designed on purpose, so in that case, is there a fix?
  20. how dose this list work,do i add them 'or do they, send it to me:confused24:i have about 50 venturerider in my GPS,
  21. I had a 2610 Gps mounted on a 05' Kawasaki Nomad I would now like to mount it on a 1987 Venture Royale. Does anyone have pictures of a Garmin 2610 mounted on a early Venture? I used a RAM mount which I placed in the center of the Kawasaki handlebars but the Venture does not give me that option. Thanks in advance Dave

  23. http://www.woot.com/ Here's a GPS for under $200 bucks in case anybody's looking....
  24. I'm about to put my third Garmin 350 in the trash (after less than 10,000 miles). The first two were covered by the warranty. And the warranty is now over. Has anyone gotten upward of 20,000 miles out of any brand of GPS. I can get by with tiny buttons and tinny music if the thing will last a while. I'm a little leary of $700 for a Zumo, given Garmin's track record with me.
  25. Checked my speedometer today with the GPS and with speedo needle right on 60, GPS read 59.4. Can't get much closer than that.
