  1. Hey Folks, I have a perhaps odd question to ask all of our members here. Lonna and I just signed a renters agreement on a doublewide MH with a 2 car garage...Yay for us It's all furnished with washer/dryer, stove, fridge yada yada yada. We now need to get some items for the house as we left quite a few things with Lonnas sister back at our old home in Michigan. The 1 thing we really need is going to be a good set of culinary knives. I'm not talking about the stuff you buy at Walmarts, this will be the last set of knives we buy. I'm no chef, but I do know there are good knive companies out there like Henckel and such. These are professional knives and that is what we are looking for. We have a great many members here with varied back grounds. What I would like is if you folks that are in the know or are culinary professionals (or anybody for that fact) could suggest a set of good quality knives that will last our lifetime. Price is somewhat of an issue, but I dont mind paying for quality and I'm thinking somewhere in the $300 or less price range. Do appreciate all you help with this one
  2. This is it...........last call for rally tshirts........the order goes in tomorrow morning 9am central time is the cut off........ so if you want one or plan to register yet i need your sizes and color choices or you will be stuck with what ever is extra...... I will probably have about 15 extras at the rally.......but thats it i know yada yada yada......but i dont want anyone to be disappointed they didnt get what they wanted. we also need to get the final dinner count into the Hub a week or so before so they can do their grocery shopping for it...... also the estimate for the BBQ for tues night......there is a poll for this in the poll section [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=37322]BBQ Tuesday night at the 2009 rally - VentureRider.Org[/ame] dont forget to reply to the new post about how many kids will be there also...... 3. After much to-do, I finally settled on a Garmin C580. Got a good deal ( I think) at ~$183 new in the box..not refurbed. I just couldn't bring myself to pay 2-3 times that for a Zumo. (or any of the other m/c specific units) Bought the appropriate RAM mount components to swap the unit back & forth between bikes and over to the truck on occasion. I still have to add aux power outlets to both bikes for the pwr plug (It's got some integral gizmo for MSNdirect). OK....yada, yada, yada....bluetooth...blah, blah, blah and so on! Now, to the point! The C580 (not being a motorcycle friendly unit) has a pop-on, pop-off ball-socket on the back, that I wouldn't want to trust to resist a sharp bump in the road and not be rolling down the road after me at 60mph or so. I recall seeing some GPS post recommending tethering GPS units to avoid such an incident as I described above. The question is ....HOW? So, here I am.....asking for opinions or recommendations/ideas as to tethering solutions. I have a couple of ideas, but I'd like you folks input before I decide what I'm going to do. How'd you do yours (if you did), or maybe one you saw that was neat or whatever!!! Thanks for any input!!!!
  4. Not really a tech question per se, hope folks will bear with me for a bit. I am being tempted by a rather nice looking low mileage reasonably priced '82 XJ1100 for sale some distance from here. She is calling me even though I've told her I don't need her, don't have room for her, that I am happy with my XVZ12 and would rather hang on to my cash. Regardless, she keeps calling to me. http://www12.asphost4free.com/easthope/xj1100.jpg I have been on the XJ forum site quite a lot yesterday and every one there says 'buy it, you'll like it!' (Even the wife has said 'oh ok that sounds like fun' ) The XJ'ers tell me that XJ1100's are CRAZY fast and powerfull and I'll be in heaven. Hopefully they mean that figuratively and not literally as in I'll kill my self but regardless, I have to wonder. Most of these folks are riding xj400's to xj750's, so I can see that the xj1100 would seem a world apart. (PC disclaimer: Not to disparage any 2 wheeled activities of course and of I fully acknowledge that small displacement bikes are pure fun, devilment and equally worthy, your mileage may vary, yada yada yada) My queston to you guys is, how does an xj1100 compare power and speed wise to the first gen Venture ? Will it bring me closer to nirvanah, or will I just miss the trunk space? BTW, don't get me wrong, I am not proposing to part with my Venture, but the cold truth is I can only afford insurance on one bike at a time. So sad to say I can never have two to choose from any time I want. Best I could hope for is one on cold standby. My xj650, which is my current cold standy, always did seem a bit tame, right from the start, so I have never relished the thought of going back to that (see above disclaimer). The optimum I guess would be a second Venture but so far prices are too steep and apparently they sell close to asking so there isn't much room to haggle. So, has any one here any first hand xj1100 experience to relate? Thanks, Brian H. Uxnridge Ont
