  1. 10925.1 i"ll try to make this short as i can.i bought an 06 black cherry venture with 59760 miles on it and thought i checked it fairly well,no compression check, pull plugs etc but did test drive and seem to run well other than front brakes wernt to good and the clutch was not right and it would idle fast sometimes and seemed to be a little to cold nature.(hell i guess i didnt check it out to well after all!). after talking to the service department i did get them to replace the clutch, fix the front brakes and clean out the fuel tank, clean out the carbs and replace the fuel filterand syn the carbs, twice.heres what it done.had cruise set at 75 pulling a slight incline while low on fuel and it cut out on me.chalked it up to possably to low on fuel. filled it up ran good for two days and once againg pulling a slight incline with no cruise this time runnimg about 73 rolled off the throtle till about 62 and gave it some more throttle and it just about chocked out but i did get it to take fuel after i slowed down to 41 and like to got ran over. the dealer lokked at it againg did there deal rand good for three days and cut out on me again leaving drive way. i think its the choke some how closeing and smothering it,can someone help? thanks. i know other people have had the same problem but seems like i did some of the thing people suggested with no possative results.
  2. Hi folks ,I have a question,my 1990 venture 1300 has carb problems,as they seem to be running very rich, I am having a lot of problems with plug fouling, and terrible fuel mileage, also at times one or two of the carbs will start puking fuel out of the overflow tubes ,telling me that the floats are stuck or there may be trash in the system. Should I go to the trouble of pulling the carbs(ugh) or trying to clean the system with chemical treatments ie seafoam, the bike also seems to bog down at high rpms...HELP!!! THANKS, Ben.
  3. I recently bought a 1983 Venture 1200. I only get 25-28 miles per gallon. the previous owner sent it to Topeka Powersports for poor fuel mileage. They installed new Diaphragm assemblies. Is this milelage typical? or is something wrong? I have talked to two other venture riders, one on a poker run, and one @ the truck stop, and apparently fuel milelage is low. On the Venture history page, it states the average fuel mileage @ 42.5 mpg, it states the capacity @ 5.3 gallons, the owners manual says 5 quarts. The warning light came on and I put 3.92 gallons in. Trying to decide if another carb overhaul is warranted this winter? Gilbert
  4. Yesterday I filled up the bike and then a little while later I noticed one bar on the fuel gauge blinking. When the bike is started, all the bars blink then only one bar blicks. Sending unit or is it in the display, or did a wire come off. ? Brad
  5. Hi gang, See if you can figure this out for me and you win the prize. For sometime now my bike has been running great! Last Thursday I rode to work and all was well then headed home filled up about 2 miles from work, and then it started. No high end speed above 45/50 MPH I made it home all the way home on the back roads. bike just wants to bog down. First thing I did was call the station and I figured they had some bad gas. they say no complaints. then I proceeded to drain the fuel and the bowls and fill up with another batch of fuel from another gas station. still the same problem. Next I check the plugs, the Fronts were carboned fouled real sooty, REALLY black. So I changed them out as well. still the same problem. I am wondering if I have another Coil Problem. I also changed the fuel filter first thing. The one thing I have not changed is the Fuel Pump. I do have (2) spares though. but the bike will run for ever below 50MPH and Idle just great. I also did a carb sync just for the heck of it. Any Suggestions would be great. Thanks, Jeff
  6. It appears that I am starting to have issues with my 08 Veture Fuel Sensor. When I fill up, it shows I am down 3 Bars, No Bars when I still have about 60 miles worth of Gas and No warning light with no Bars. Is there a quick fix Luke an additive etc. or is it just gone duff and needs waranty replacement?
  7. This last Friday 7-2 we were on are way home from a wonderful trip to the Black Hill. Pulled into a Flying J truck stop in Sioux Falls SD for gas. Go to turn in and down we go slid about 15 feet on its side, bike and trailer do a 180 and I laid in the middle of intersection wife step off the bike as it went down and didn't get hurt. My left knee hurt pretty bad . Come to find out a truck driver that had filled up forgot to put there cap back on and as he turned the corner to leave spilled out fuel on to the pavement and it splashed into the turning lane. No one seen who spilled the fuel. I didn't see it and when I braked and turned it was just like ice and down we went. After about an hour of talking to the manager, police and EMTs we get on bike and finish our last 250 miles. Go to hospital that night to have knee checked out find out I have a deep tear in my calf muscle and little road rash. The lesson is WATCH THE INTERSECTION AT TRUCK STOPS . Everyone be careful and have a safe summer I know I am going to pay more attention to the my turns in to fuel stops from now on.
  8. Anyone got any info on the facts that Camp Fuel has the same ingredients as Sea-Foam? Tried to ask this question at Maint Day and didn't care much for answer I got so I'll take it to the experts. If Camp Fuel has the same ingredients as Sea-Foam what is it missing? Could we make up a cheaper Sea-Foam? We don't have the 44 stuff around here and I really don't want to know about it. I have found Sea-Foam to be some great stuff but they are pricing themselves out of the market or at least my pocketbook. But I bought a gallon this spring. I have been mixing things to try to come up with something that works as good but little afraid of some of the harsher ones. Any Ideas???
  9. 1984 Venture Royale: I've owned it a few weeks, been riding it to work everything has seemed to be working well. Filled with fuel and came home and parked the bike. My wife got home a little less than an hour later and suggested we take the bike and go out to dinner, "great idea Honey". I get the bike out of the shed, clean the bugs off the windshield, fire it up and we head out the driveway. Everything was functioning nomally up to this point. As we headed up the driveway, the engine stumbled a little, then caught, then stumbled again, acting like it wasn't getting fuel, thumbed the choke for a second, she caught, then stumbled and quit. Tried to restart, she would fire and run a few seconds but wouldn't take much throttle, and quit again. Same thing three or four times. I thought hmmmm clogged fuel filter? malfunctioning pump? restriction in fuel line? plugged tank outlet? Pushed home and parked in the driveway and took the pickup . Next morning tried to start it, same thing, run a few seconds and quit. Didn't havetime to tear into it so left it sit for a couple of days. Came back disconnected fuel output line from filter, flow was good.... disconnected fuel line from carbs and cycled ignition, flow and pressure were good?????hmmmmm. Hooked everything back up and she fires up and runs fine.... ??????? Am a bit nerveous to get the horse too far from the barn. Any thoughts?

  11. I'm currently on a road trip from New Mexico to wahoo NE. and when I last stopped for gas I noticed a plate sized circle of fluid on the ground jusy below the raditor at first I thought oh no a radiator leak but after looking closer found out it was fuel couldn't find any leaks so I continued on to my final stop after I arrived and said hello to family I went to move the bike to a better location and there was the plate sized circle of fuel. This morning took off the lower fairing and found that fuel had come out of both hoses by the air filters. is this something I should be concerned about or do I have a major problem. I want to get this taken care of before I head back next week.
  12. Not even sure where to start on this one... For some background, I ran the bike completely out of gas about 3 weeks ago... not far from home, so I was moving again in minutes. Anyways, since then I have been plagued with a sticking float or floats. We went to Marcarl's M&E a couple of weeks ago, and part-way thru the afternoon ride, I could smell gas (gasoline, that is...) and the engine was bogging. When the group stopped at a Tim Horton's for a break, there was certainly fuel coming through the overflow hoses to just in front of the rear wheel. I limped it home, saw that Carbs #1 and #4 were pouring fuel out of the overflows after I pulled the airbox off. I shut the fuel off at the tank and let the carbs empty themselves as I did a light drum solo on each carb body. I turned the fuel back on, hit the key, and after a few clicks, the fuel pump shut off with nothing out of the overflows. Good... problem solved. The next morning, I rode about 40-45 miles to Waterloo to pick up some friends on their bike, and escort them back to our place. My machine ran great. However, on the return trip to take them home, at least one float stuck again... same old issue : gas out the overflow tubes, and engine flooding. Got home. Emptied the carb bowls again, then let the pump suck straight Seafoam into the bowls. I let it sit overnight. Checked the next morning, and when I hit the key.. one click from the fuel pump.. no more. Good. That fixed it. Rode 2 days later... guess what ? Stuck float. Gas. Overflow. Expletives from me, disapproving eyerolls from wife. Redo Seafoam treatment. Let it sit 2 days. Fuel pump shuts off as it should. No fuel dripping anywhere. But, I ride for an hour. Smell gas. Engine bogging. Four letter words in abundance. Call Carl and reserve a space in his gorgeous shop last Monday. Bring my spare rack of carbs with me, figuring I can replace a bad float or floats, valves, etc. Remove carbs, finally get backs off of bowls - they are whistle clean inside. Valves certainly do not look damaged. Check the bouyancy of the floats.. all is well. Spray the seats of the valves liberally with carb cleaner, reassemble. All works as it should... the bowls fill, then the fuel pump shuts off. No overflowing fuel. Do little happy dance. Change plugs as the old ones have seen a lot of Seafoam and excess fuel. Seems to be running the way it should. Go for a ride tonight - and I don't even have to tell you to guess... I smell gas as I slow to a stop about 30 miles into my ride. Arrrrgh... One of Carl's (1 Gen's answer to Yoda) thoughts on Monday was that it could be the fuel supply line from the pump gradually disintegrating.. allowing little pieces of former hose to clog the float valves. It certainly could be... but why always carbs #1 and #4 ? The are diagonally opposite each other. I should be able to replace the fuel line tomorrow.. that is an easy thing to try and not expensive. However, before I run completely out of curse words, anyone else have any other thoughts if this repeats itself again ?
  13. I fear the fuel pump has given up the ghost on my 06. Won't start at all with the choke out....maybe 1-2 clicks from the fuel pump when I turn the key. Tank full of fresh gas....new fuel filter....everything else working fine. They shoot horses don't they? Boomer.....well stuck for a while it looks like.....sigh.
  14. Good morning everyone, The question i have is about the fuel gauge on my 08 RSV. As the bars reduce to empty is this an indication of the whole tank or is the reserve still intact? A few of my freinds ride with the fuel pet-cock on reserve, but i try to tell them if they ever run out of gas, thats it !!! they'll be pushing. So i was wondering if the fuel gauge on my RSV reads the reserve gas. Also how far can i expect to go on a reserve before runnung out? Thanks and have a safe summer Frank
  15. I know it's been discused before but I want to make sure I don't have a proble. I get fuel leaking out of the vent hose under the seat low to the ground not the carb vents up forward, I am under the understanding that it is the tank vent. My question is could this be vapor escaping and then condensing that is dripping under my bike? I think it's a little excessive although the direct sun and heat here in SE GA are intense I am not seeing the same stains on the ground under other makes?
  16. I've had some issues with my RSV cutting off since I got some bad gas. I've run a couple bottles of Seafoam through and I just changed the fuel filter. It will start fine with the choke open but if I don't let it warm up it will die going down the street. Once it dies it will start right back with the choke open again. Lat night I was on the interstate and it quit. I pulled in the clutch and let it out a couple times and it started back up. It just seems strange. Would a fuel pump go out a little at a time like that? I've been through a number of tanks of gas since the bad tank and I still get the same stuff. Any ideas?
  17. Hi folks.. Back home after a looooong road trip through the USA.. Departed Halifax Nova Scotia (that's in Canada, north-east of Maine...) and road the I95 down all the way to Key West Florida, them back up past Orlando and through Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana before stopping for a visit at Goose to learn how to do the venerable Carbs and Valves tasks on the bike. Having read all the articles on how this is supposed to be done, I would never have attempted it on my own bike.. but having someone show you how its done is a different matter.. wow, so much to learn and so much to absorb in such a short period of time. We got the carbs cleaned out, floats reset, a few this and thats to it.. Then to adjusting the valve clearances.. wow.. What took us a day to do would have taken me a month of humming and hawwing over the winter months wondering if I had done it right or understood what the heck the articles were referring to.. But Goose is good at what he does and we sailed right through the work and got it all done.. Though I've torn down multi-million dollar aircraft in my days, doing the same to your own bike is a totally different story lol.. Such a long distance to go to learn how to do this work you say? Yep.. but visiting Goose was the cause-result-purpose for my spring road trip.. Was it all worth it? HELL YES.. wow.. Though some of the valves were close and some were quite 'out', the difference in the engine feel is amazing. The engine doesn't buzz anymore, it purrs.. less vibes and less noise coming from the engine. Impressive. The carb work did wonders as well. The exhaust sounds a lot smoother.. huffing instead of in-articulated puffing (if that makes any sense..) Throttle response was better as well.. However, out on the highway I found I had to relearn where the power curve was as everything seems to have shifted up more.. I used to be able to auger up hills in 5th but now have to drop it into 4th gear but it's actually better as I found that my throttle isn't as wide open in 4th than it would have been in 5th to dump more fuel into the system to get me up that big hill. Quite different and quite good. I LIKE IT!! Goose made mention that all this work could possible net me perhaps a 3 mpg improvement overall.. if it does, great... if it doesn't, no worries as the bike feels soooo smooth compared to before.. almost like new. My ride buddy and I traveled many miles together these past two years and we know that I always burn more fuel than he does.. and we know by how much of a margin.. usually on a full fuel tank at fill up I'll take on about .5 to .7 of a gallon more than he does.. but on our return trip, it was so much better, typically .3 to .5 more of a gallon than he does.. Funny enough though, I thought this was kind of odd then it occurred to me that I always lead and he's always behind me.. So riding home late last night in 40'F weather, he took the lead and yes, how about that.. he's burning more than me lol.. Silly of me not to have thought of it earlier.. now we know why such a discrepancy in fuel burning.. lol The short of the long is that after 61,000 miles on my bike, the work done with Goose on my bike was very much worth it, and much appreciated! Our last morning in Maine, about a week after having the work done, I discovered my left rear cylinder was not firing at idle. I had a cold jug though the bike idled OK.. The day before, in the wet conditions, Every time I came off the throttle the bike would huff puff and then bike fire like a pistol shot, and I knew it was from the left side. I checked my vacuum plugs as I had changed them recently but all was good, and no exhaust leaks were found.. At highway speeds all felt good.. the bike made good power and fuel burn rate was normal.. but there I was that morning with a cold jug.. the exhaust port was stone cold. CRAP! Luckily there was a Yamaha shop nearby and when I explained to him about the work I had done, the riding conditions the day before etc etc.. he simply drained the carb for that jug and presto.. all is good.. He suggested that perhaps I picked up some dirty fuel along the way that might have plugged up the pilot jet, not giving the engine any fuel at idle but giving it when the needle comes up.. The first time he drained it there wasn't much fuel coming out.. then ran the bike, and drained it a second time and a lot of fuel came out.. The bike has run impressively again after that... wow. Long road trip.. from 40'F to 99'F and back within 2 weeks is hard on the body for us pale northern types.. lol.. time to rest now.. looking forward to my next road trip soon.. =) Once again, thanks to Goose for his patience and skills. Good instructor! Cheers
  18. Don't know if this the same for all Ventures but on MINE it sure is.... Filled the gas tank yesterday and put the gas petcock to Reserve. I normally switch it back th Normal after 25-30 miles. I do this because I don't want any gunk build-up in the petcock and this also ensures that I have good flow.... Well today I found out that with the petcock in the Reserve position the Low Fuel Light does NOT come on and the Trip odometer does NOT warn of impending Low Fuel as it does NOT zero out. Luckily for me when I ran out of gas I was able to slap the bike over onto its kickstand and get enough gas to the left side of the tank.....which enabled me to haul a$$ to the nearest Exit and Gas Station. Boomer....who sez ya gotta remember ALL the steps of any procedure ya use....even when it comes to thumping on the pygmies during periods of cheesecake withdrawal.
  19. Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas as to where to start looking for my problem. I started my bike ( 96 Royal Star) yesterday with no problems and ran to the store. When I came out the bike would not start. It seemed like a low battery with just a few clicks being heard. I was near a hill so I rolled on down ,popped the clutch and the bike fired up. I got about a mile down the rode when I got a loud backfire and when I looked down all my gauges where going crazy. Speedo was bouncing and the other lights were blinking madly. I was able to get the bike home as long as I did not accelerate. The bike did hold an idle. After I got home I turned the bike off and tried to restart it but there was nothing but some faint clicking that sounded like the fuel pump trying to work.I charged the battery overnight although it really didn't need it and tried starting the bike this morning. I just get the fuel pump clicking. The headlights and neutral light are very dim but do come on. Any ideas? Thanks
  20. Left work tonight and got about a mile down the road and the bike died, as though it had run out of gas. Tried to restart and it didn't even try to fire. I turned the key off and on and noticed just a single click. Does a mile sound about right if the fuel pump is not working? I tried the key several more times and heard several clicks and was lucky enough to get it started and got home. Is that a typical fuel pump problem? Is there anything else I should check? What about warranty? Thanks Mark
  21. Looks like another small fix-em up on the 2000 MM RSV I bought last month. The petcock doesn't stop the flow of fuel. Discovered when I parked the bike after a long ride, noticed the shutoff was still in the off position... yet I didn't starve for fuel. Confirmed on purpose again. I suspect I need a new petcock assembly. I could probably slap one of the carb vaccum caps on the petcock if I needed to remove the tank before its fixed. Has anyone seen this before? Is it worth trying to fix? Is there a fix that might easily succeed that anyone has tried? On a 10 year old bike it might be worth getting a new petcock with new internal screen filters anyway... ????? Thoughts & suggestions appreciated.
  22. Ignition timing – Check the timing and/or adjust, How to? Since I am in the process of doing some maintenance on my 06 RSTD (sync of carbs, installation of new plugs, oil change, lubrication etc, I thought I should also check or adjust the ignition timing. What are the procedures / guidance for doing this work? Where is the fuel filter located on the 06 RSTD motorcycle and how difficult is it to change this filter since I will have the fuel tank removed during this work. Are there any kits available for making this task any easier in the future? Thanks 2 Flights
  23. Twice now I've run my fuel level down to less than a gallon. When I stopped to refuel, a small amount of gas dripped from a hose at the bottom center of the bike. I didn't actually see the fuel dripping. By the time I had finish fueling the bike, it had stopped. This doesn't happen with a half full tank and I don't see any signs of it dripping while it's parked in the garage. Anybody know why?
  24. Carburetor fuel leak. I have an intermittent or random fuel leak (R/S) from carburetor, #3 or #4 air vent hose on a 2006 Yamaha RSTD. Sometimes I can ride for 50 miles before it leaks and other time less than 7 miles. I have tried a can of Sea Foam without success. At idle there has never been a fuel leak problem… only occurs at road speed. The Yamaha owner’s manual indicates the carbs are Mikuni type BDSR32 X4. I have been unable to locate any information on these units on the Internet. What do these numbers mean and how do I find out the type of carburetors I have on this motorcycle. Any suggestions to solve this “nagging” fuel leak problem without removing the carburetors (a last resort) would be appreciated. Thanks – 2 Flights
  25. Last wednesday we were getting ready to leave for Gatlinburg with 27 other folks for a weekend of riding and fun, naturally I had to work late so was already running late. At about 10 pm I went out to hook up the trailer and check all the lights and stuff and the bike just shut down on me. I determined that the fuel pump was not working so I called a buddy of mine who rides a wing trike but also has a yamaha two wheeler for solo riding. Told him that I would have to wait until the dealer opened the next day to get a pump and that I would just meet them up there later in the day. The first thing he said was to just come get his pump and make the trip and then get a replacement later! So at about 11 pm I was taking parts off of someone elses bike so that my trip wouldn't be ruined! Made the swap and the trip went great. I don't think many folks would have offered to let someone take parts off their bike in that situation so my hat is off to Roger McClure aka: Mama Chicken from Somerville Al.
