  1. Does anyone have a old carb for a first gen. I need one to take apart to see if I can do it before I take my 88 apart. The dealer wants $500 to rebuild them:Sad_0241: and that just seems like toooooo much money for me. Thanks, Ed etohio@iwon.com
  2. So I get the new bike home Tuesday night. The wife and I take about a 5 mile ride to check it out. Pull up in the driveway, and notice one of the rear speakers aren't working.. BRAND NEW.. come on now... SO, I call the dealer the next morning, and of course, depends on how busy we are if we can get to it right away or not... UM... I just spent how much for what?!?!?! Got home last night and decided I'll look at it myself.. Pull the seats, and yep, sure enough, plain as day is a a connector with nothing plugged into it... I start looking around for the other end. It's up under the trunk, with the wire running between the trunk and the trunk bracket. You could tell exactly what happened... They put it together, couldn't get the connector pushed back through from between the bracket and the trunk, so said WTF.. it's only one speaker.. I ended up pulling the speaker pod loose, and it gave enough clearance to force the connector through... I also noticed that one of the connectors for one of the antennas wasn't routed correctly and placed in the holder for it.. and another wire laying loose that should have been run through a wire keeper.. SO.. I sorted it all out, put it all back together, and now I got sound all the way around, and no worries of wires rubbing from being in wrong places.. It sure makes me wonder what other problems I'm going to find from the dealer assembly though... If they do something like this with a brand new bike, I'll be damned if I'm going to trust my life to others when you have no ideas if they take shortcuts or not.. At least when I work on it, I know what was done.
  3. In the last month I have been to four motorcycle dealers in Minnesota. Harley Honda Kawasaki Yamaha. Harley was the only dealer to any touring bikes on hand. The Yamaha dealer had new 07's setting there.
  4. Probably a dumb question...but are passing lamps for additional lighting, or are they for use just when passing...(Don't laugh too hard). Also...are they worth cost? And if installed by the dealer at time of purchase...if I request they be installed with a relay...will the dealer laugh at me. Thanks, Wally
  5. Following is an update re: this post... [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42428]Clutch Basket ... Do you have a pic? - VentureRider.Org[/ame] I have been going "back and forth" with the Service Manager at the dealer (he's been very helpful) who has been doing the same with Yamaha for a few weeks now. Yamaha is sending out a new basket (I hope it's an I basket this time). Also Yamaha has requested the dealer do some gear backlashing measurements and send them to Yamaha Japan. I'm going to resist this because they want the bike there at the shop with the existing basket in it and that will cost me extra money and time as well as I have to put the clutch all back together. More to follow as it comes to me. (the saga continues)
  6. My cassette deck was not working, so I took it over to my dealer to have it checked out. They found the problem. :rotf::rotf:
  7. So I brought my RSV to the dealer for the broken windshield support (08 plenty of warranty left)... and they replace my inner and outer fairing under warranty... did a fine job. But I noticed that from lack of support and the windshield moving around, it had scratched the bottom edge of the windshield... and the chrome strip at the bottom of the windshield doesn't fit right. Sooo... I brought it back on a Saturday (45 minutes each way) and was told the warranty guy's not in today.. can you bring it back monday???? I politely explaind that would require me to take time off of work, and wasn't going to do that. so the tech left a note for the warranty guy. I just got off the phone w/him and he says " well the tech said there was a problem with the left side ( wich is crap, since the support was broken on both sides) and he has to wait to hear from YAMAHA to see if it will be covered, cause "that was a big claim.. over 1600 dollars"... is this how the program works??? I work at a Ford dealer, and WE determine if it'll be covered or not(to a point). Does this seem reasonable?? or should I start searching out another dealer to use.... Also , is there a phone number to get ahold of Yamaha if you're not satisfied with the service you recieve???
  8. Hi Everyone: I am really in a quandry. I feel like my 2009 RSV is top heavy and have read threads that say to lower the back end, to not lower the back end, to change tires on the front, etc. There seem to be cons and pros for all options. The dealer said that lowering the back end without lowering the front would make it worse. The dealer also said they don't recommend changing tire sizes. The dealer also told me that they had someone come in who had put on the lowering kit and took it back off within a week. Said it made it very unstable in parking lots, etc and made it more top heavy. I found a kit that is a "leveling kit" at Diamond Accessories" which actually raises the back end. This is supposed to make it more stable and less top heavy. Here is the link http://www.diamondraccessories.com/yamaha/proddisplay.php?name=Leveling Link Kit Will raising the back instead of lowering make a good difference? Has anyone tried this? Does anyone have any advice for me? I would like to do something to make it better but do not want to do it and the change not have any effect, or even make it worse. Thanks everyone for your help. Don Wood - New Venture owner
  9. http://www.1800lastbid.com/auction/listings/categories/index.cfm?category=806430895&ID=1 Looks like a honda dealer went out of business possible good buys
  10. A year or so ago Cycle City, the Yamaha dealer closed it doors after being in bussness about 40 years. that really sucked as far as ordering any parts without going a fair piece out of town. Well this week I drive by the local Honda / Kawasaki dealer Burlington Cycle, and don't they have a new Yamaha sign up. Yup they have added Yamaha to there inventory. Burlington Cycle also have been there for many years, and are also great folks to deal with, so I am glad they were able to add the Yamha line to their store.
  11. I mostly lurk on this sight. Yes I read the posts about so many new people on line but not posting Well Here I am..I've been here for almost a year, and have made a few posts Anyway lets talk tires... Last June Peggy and I took two weeks and did the Blueridge and the Skyline drive from start to finish and back again. At that time I had a little over 6000 miles on the Bridgestones and the rear developed a problem. We were stuck on N.C. got a new Dunlop 404 that's all the dealer had at the time. So i bought it. Now I had 12000 miles on it the front tire, still the Bridgestone (started to cup and make a lot of noise) I decided new tires front and rear. I read the forums and decided to get the Dunlop Elite 3 front and rear. The local dealer wanted $550. for the tires, mount, balance and install!! I ordered them from Two Brothers Tires in Lawrenceville, Ga. they shipped them to the house Both tires and shipping $234.00 (Dealer here in Evans,Ga. wanted $225.00 for the rear tire alone) Anyway i took the wheels off the bike took to a local guy here and he mounted and balanced them $40.00 I re-installed them last night , and today I put about 100 miles on them. What a difference in the ride, so much smoother and quieter. I know i've only put on 100 miles but "I LIKE EM" So far!!!
  12. I made a post in the 2nd generation area that got me to thinking...... I have a list of dealer related nightmares when I have had to have them do repairs to my bikes over the years. Last April a group of us were heading out for a ride. Sure enough the night before I find a nail in a relatively new Avon and the wife catches wind about the dangers of patching. Sure enough, on the way out we hit a dealer and have a new tire put on. 100 miles later we pull over to eat lunch and my buddy ask when the saddle bag cracked...What? Sure enough I have a big crack down the back. S.O,.a B. I call them and they say to bring it by after the trip. I showed up with 4 other bikes that were on the trip and they discover the metal spacers were not installed at the bottom of the bag. They must not have been there (according to them) but they should have pointed it out so they will replace the $1500 dollar bag. This was April and I have watched them order the wrong color twice, The upper bag once and the wrong side twice. They were apologetic and as nice as pie but totally incompetent. Well, two days ago they get the bag in and forgot to order the spacers.....I was able to cut some tubing to do the job but was amazed at the total lack of professionalism. Now I can tell you similar stories with 4-5 other dealers but it's someone elses turn at this point:witch_brew: I stay busy but am doing more and more of my own repairs due to their incompetence. Just wish I could see better. I imagine there are tons of scary stories about dealers....along with some good ones.
  13. Would the clutch whine be considered a characteristic of a lemon? If I understand what has been said in previous posts, its a flaw in craftsmanship in most RSTDs and RSVs. From what I've read, the dealer has four attempts to repair it within the warranty and if its not fixable they're required to buy it back.
  14. Hello everyone. I have noticed while browsing this wonderful forum, that many have installed RK mufflers. I was wondering if any one had the template for the bracket on hand. The links from some time ago have expired. I just scored a new set at the local HD dealer for $75. I am very excited to get moving. I did already order the clamps on ebay thanks to you guys. any assistance would be greatly appreciated. thank you. I have a new to me 2005 rstd and love it.
  15. Can anyone recommend a good dealer in the North Atlanta area to do warranty service work? I know of Lawrenceville Honda Yamaha, Cycle Nation of Canton, and Motions (in Marietta). I've visited them all in the past, and they all seemed nice, but I've never done service business with any, and the Lawrenceville store has a number of negative reviews online. We just bought an '06 Venture that has a problem with the radio (no lights or display whatsoever) and I'd like to get it looked at and fixed as a warranty item. The previous owner said his dealer told him the radio isn't covered under warranty, even though the owner's manual explicitly states that it is. I'm looking for a dealer with a good service department that won't give me grief about the warranty.
  16. My Venture sprung a leak. I have done a search but none of the situations seem to give me any help. The left head cover gasket is leaking. Not bad but it leaks and I don't like it. It is the gasket near the top of the engine (right under the chrome covers). It has just started. My Venture is 9 years old and has 47,000 + miles on it. I have a few questions; 1) Will it hurt to keep riding it until I have a chance to fix it? B) Is it something I can do or should I take it to a dealer? 3) If I do take it to a dealer is it very expensive to fix? D) Should I change both now or just the one that is leaking?
  17. For those who have followed the perils of the missing parts, I'm ready to write the final chapter. A very quick recap: Took the paintable parts off of my 99 RSV and took them to Wizard of Wheels in Crete IL to have them painted white. This was in June of 2008. The dealer parted out the job and the painter absconded with my parts! Ultimately, I got back a few of the parts, but not enough to be able to ride the bike. So, for more than a year, the bike has been on a lift in my garage. I have filed with the BBB and they were very sorry, but the dealer refused to respond and they have no authority to do anything about it. I've had numerous contacts with Yamaha Corp in California, but they are not willing to help at all. They won't even allow me to buy replacement parts at cost and insist that I go through another dealer. So, enough is enough. I'll sell my '99 to the first person who comes with $2500 in cash or money order. I have a lot of chrome and extras like passenger hwy pegs and armrests. The bike was in perfect running order as I had it maintained regularly prior to this fiasco. I'll post some pictures of the bike and the parts I have. chuck
  18. I am planning to replace my clutch, but after reading all the threads on the subject I am a little confused. I am planning on using the Barnett clutch spring and plates. The service manual calls for a new o-ring, ball and retaining wire. Do you use these parts with the Barnett clutch upgrade? The thread in the tech section said not to use a few parts but I'm not sure if it was for the Barnett or not. After 61k of riding 2 up and towing a trailer it has begun to slip and I don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon, so I am going to replace every thing. I should of had the dealer do this when they changed the clutch basket a couple of years ago. I live a long way from anywhere I can get parts so I need to have everything before I start. Thanks for your help.
  19. It looks like I have a coolant leak around the #2 cylinder head gasket. So should I take it to the dealer or should I try to torque the head bolts myself?
  20. I am looking for the Ball Milled Water Pump Cover STR-4NK27-41-02 for my 07 RSTD. I can't seem to find one at any online dealer. Dear Mama Yama isn't making them now. If you have one you would be willing to sell or have seen one at a dealer please let me know. Thanks...
  21. As some of you may know I have been fighting the busted trunk bag problem for a couple of months now and am close to having completed (purchased used bottom on e-bay for $200.00, having to dismantle the backrest, replace the broken bracket welded to fram for bottom screws). All that is left is to attach the frabrecated bracket to the bike frame and put the screws through the metal and rubber plates in the bottom of the trunk bag. Just learned today (after reading a reply to a post from last week) that this is a Yahama recall and they will fix (don't know if they just furnish the plaltes or replace the trunk or what but am taking the busted bottom and license receipt to the local dealer to see what is involved). Just wanted to alert any other 99 owners to check with a dealer first if you have this problem (wish I had checked first).
  22. I have an 07 RS Venture from new. It now has 40,000 kms on it. I have a few problems... some of which have been there since day 1. My dealer has tried to resolve some and not tried on others. The chirp/whine clutch basket noise is a common one and I am planning to talk to my dealer..... again....about trying to fix that one. My question is... do any of you other Venture owners have the other problems I have? If so, were you able to fix them and how? 1) whine/chirp at some rpms. Getting louder now, with 40,000 kms on the bike. Dealer response??? nothing. Do any of you think this is worth pursuing? It is getting very annoying lately. 2) groaning sound from swingarm or rear shock when flexed (sitting and bouncing up and down) when the bike is cold in the morning or on cold days. Mostly an embarassment but the bike has not always done this. Dealer response? lubed swingarm bushings, shock mount pivots, still the same. 3) Accelerate Button on cruise does not always respond to single incremental push. Dealer response? replaced switch assembly, and I think entire cruise electronic box. Still the same. 4) handlebars, forks, seem to point to the right. Bike runs straight, but points to the right. I have initial suspicion that the rear wheel is not true vertical relative to the frame. Dealer response? Bike seems to run normally to everyone else. Any help or comments greatly appreciated.
  23. Kevin (Leadwolf56) just called me from Gatlinburg and he has a broken windshield on his 2nd gen. Do we have any members in the area that may be able to help him out? Anyone in the area have a spare windshield or know of a dealer in the area that may have one? He doesn't have internet access while there. I have his phone number is 574-612-3837. Dennis

    Good morning

Good morning to everyone, Well I just pick up my 09 Venture yesterday black/red man she ride and sounds like caddy.. Only one issue the speedommeter doesn't seem to move with ease, it acts like it is hanging if I can do a fast repair or fix I will but if I need to take it to the dealer that is not a problem.. Has anyone else had this problem? Also since I a proud owner now I will be joining today... Thanks guys/gals Scary
  25. Brought my brand new Venture home this afternoon, parked her in the garage, threw on my uniform and hauled a** into the city for work!!! The 5 miles from the dealer home were the smoothest, most comfortable I've spent on a bike! Hoping for some slow time tonight at work to start to read my manual. Any break in hints or tips would be greatly appreciated. I know I've already left my fuel selector valve on in my garage, hope its ok till my wife gets home! Pics to follow tomorrow!!
