  1. I have been to maintenance day but haven't had any work done. I need help to finish maintenance work on my 83VR that I am doing and see no way to finish it without removing carbs to get to two bad vacuum rubber caps on right rear and left front cylinder heads. Other two cylinders plugs was easy to get to and they were rotted and torn, I must assume the other two must be bad also. So question is: How do I get on a (list?) to get help on maintenance day so I can replace these rubber plugs or caps. On the 1200 motor about an inch and a half under the rubber caps you take off for synchronizing the carbs are larger rubber caps over (vacuum?) nipples from the cylinder heads. The right rear and left front are out in the open and easy to get to. The left front and right rear can barley be seen and touched with your finger. These are the two I need to replace the rubber caps. Thanks.....Karl
  2. Hi, After caliper and brake rebuild, I am trying in vain to bleed the brakes on my 84. After 3 hours of using a vacuum pump yielding little success with quite a bit of air is out, the rear is still very spongy and cannot seem to get anymore air out..I have read a lot about the lack of a bleeder on the early models and am wondering if it is possible to get to the connection without taking plastic off???? I've bled the brakes before, but never a complete re-do from zero...Even having a terrible time with the front right brake... ughhhh.this is very frustrating..I want to ride. What is the correct order in bleeding considering the anti dives...??? Is it left anti-dive ,then left front caliper. then rear ....over and over again???? I;ve read a lot on this here, but still am struggling this time Thanks Clay
  3. maybe someone here can help me i have a little spark for the front two cylinders back two are running fine tried sea-foam still on the first tank with sea-foam plenty of power going through the gears any ideas????
  4. I took my bike to the local shop to get some work gone and got the bike back yesterday. What a grocery list of work to be done.. I might have been able to get some if not most of it done myself but didn't have the confidence of tackling it alone.. (A) Early this summer when I had my front tire replaced by an out of town company, they managed to munge up the axle threads in the fork. When my local shop saw this they expressed concerns that it should beefed up with a heli-coil kit. The kits are expensive around here, I never saw one but would imagine gold plating and diamond studs for the price they were asking. A subsequent road trip into the USA showed me where to get them for $50 or so.. So new wheel bearings, covers, axle etc and heli-coil insert got that all done proper and more secure / safer.. (B) Neck bearings.. When visiting Goose in June, he gave the neck bearings a much needed 'tightening', and indicated that there was still some front to back play in the bearings.. They should be OK for a while but that they really do need to be repacked / replaced.. If someone is going through all that trouble to gain access to the bearings to repack them, might as well spend the additional $20 on new bearings eh? So now, wow, what a HUGE difference that makes.. the front end is tighter feeling, more confidence in turns, tracks much better. Doesn't feel sloppy anymore. Though the bike was safe to ride before the change, it wasn't as sure footed as my buddy's bike.. but now? wow. © Front forks servicing and progressive Spring installation. New seals and syn oil put in the front forks.. New progressive springs do wonders for a bike.. I have them in my VStar and loved them, and decided to put them in the Venture and oh my gosh.. what a gorgeous feel to this bike NOW.. Coupled with the new neck bearings, the bike tracks well in turns and straight line but eats up the sharp bumps and cracked and obstacles.. And when you apply your front brakes, the bike doesn't dive to the pavement anymore. At an intersection you could pump the front brakes and watch your headlight beam fly up and down.. not anymore.. yes, it's a stiffer ride but a more confident feeling ride.. WOW. I like it a lot. Got a week of rain unfortunately so i can't take it out to test it properly until this weekend. But the ride home yesterday really impressed me a lot.. wow. zero air pressure in the shocks is recommended unless you notice you need air in them.. In the oem set up I used to pump them up to 5 or 7 psi.. and they were still floppy.. now, wow,, nice!! Now, I'm just waiting for the new rear shock to come in.. They had a production problem this fall that caused a delay in shipping.. but I'm patient.. Once the Werks shock comes in I'll be installing it and testing the bike out, putting her through the paces.. A good wad of coins spent but worth every penny thus far.. Progressive springs, I am confident they will be all that they lived up to be in my VStar..
  5. Todays project was getting the battery box fabricated and installed. Made a two piece box out of 1/8" aluminum. Mounted a front coil bracket from a VMax on the bottom. This bracket will hold the two front cylinder coils & the Vboost motor. Rear pair of coils will be mounted rear of the back heads under the fuel tank. That's tomorrows project. Using the VMax rear bracket for those. One thing that comes to mind. Don't try this at home kids !!. Unless you have a lot of patience and enjoy tinkering with stuff. Getting some of this stuff to fit up right has been a series of try it, remove it, rework it, repeat, repeat. But it is fun. I am having as good a time rebuilding this bike as I will riding it. Gary
  6. Been riding my 09 since July, almost 9000km and noticed for the first time yesterday a wheel wobble I wasn't expecting. Tires are original and appear normal wear to me. First time I've done this so it could have been there from day one and was wondering if it is an alignment issue. Hoping someone else can try it or say its normal. Cruising along in gear at 85km/hr (about 50mph) I took my hands off the grips to close my jacket pocket and as the bike coasted and slowed down, at 70km/hr (almost 40mph) the front wheel started to wobble. Had I let it go further it could have turned into a tank slapper. Given the cold weather lately tire pressures were down a few lbs so I put more air in today (36psi front, 40psi rear, have 0psi on front forks, 40psi on rear). Tried same thing and again right around 70km/h I started to get the wobble again. Haven't tried doing it in neutral yet and wondering if it was because the bike was in gear or if it is an alignment, tire, or other issue. Comments?
  7. I know someone makes these. Anybody know who? Is it better (that is cheaper) to make my own? I'll try is as long as they are solid.
  8. I just picked up a '96 Royal Star with only 19k on it, bike is in great shape except for one thing... I have a pop through the exhaust. I suspected a lean cylinder and was right (on part of it) so off with the carbs for a thurough cleaning. I installed them back on yesterday and dialed everything in, huge difference in performance... but still had the pop. At idle its a rythmic; Pop.... Pop.... Pop.... Pop.... but goes away when revved and comes back again if the rpm is held constant. So today I checked that cylinders carb for any leaks or possible cause for this issue, nothing found. Plenty of fuel there. I went ahead and did a compression test on both right side cylinders and they seem low to me, or at least what the manual says they should be. Cylinder compression test shows 110psi on the front right and 125 on the rear right. Spark plug was wet on the front so I dried the cylinder out and cleaned the plug... same pop and same compression reading. After this I ran a leakdown test and im just a bit over 20% loss coming out of the exhaust valves! This afternoon I'll pop the valve cover and check the valve clearance but im afraid the damage has been done and the adjustment won't help. My question is, what is a normal compression reading for these engines? And can the heads come off without pulling the engine? Thanks for any help,
  9. Took some McGyvering, but I got the pull throttle cable to work and clear the frame finally. I had to make a new, repositioned mount on carbs for it. Also cut about a half inch off end to allow it to clear frame. Bent tube on end of cable about 30 deg. farther. Choke cable is now secured to frame bar. With the solid motor mounts the relationship between engine & frame should be consistent. I got a coil front & rear coil mount brackets from a VMax. Between these and some creative sheet metal forming, I think I can get the battery on its side in front of the air box. The two rear coils are going to be behind the rear cylinders. The front coils will hang down below the battery tray, with the Vboost motor behind them. I keep at it, I may make MD in Oberlin. Gary
  10. I was thinking of de-linking the brakes on my '86 VR. Does the standard front master cylinder have sufficient capacity to operate both the front calipers, or does it need changing? Thanks
  11. All I can say is "WOW"!!! The front end doesn't float over bumps any more and it's much more stable at parking lot speeds. (not to mention my feet now touch the ground)
  12. OK, first of all My bike is triked and it is amazing the side to side scrapping of the front tire and the wear it causes so forget about another new (front bike tire) then I was thinking of going with a M/C rear tire on the front to get better wear of of it. As I was searching I found that you darksiders are using a 165/80/15 on the rear of your bike, with that in mind I was wondering if that would work for me on the front as I have a brand new Nankang 165/80/15 sitting out in the garage, I matched it up with an older front M/C tire and the hight seems about right , did notice that the inner ring of the C/T was a bit smaller. now that might bike does not lean anymore would this work? boy it would last a lot longer I bet. Thanks for any help. Just racking my tiny brain. Jeff
  13. OK yesterday AM I get up at 0330 and head to Houston for a 3-4 hour supposedly job doing some Modifications on the Wing/\..It turned out to last all day and didnt leave Houston for Home till nearly 8PM last night arriving home around midnight. Here Is a list of what I did. 1. Progressive front springs 2. "All Balls" Head Bearings.(Didnt need YET but most Gold Wings will need to upgrade due to a front end wobble 3. Centramatic wheel balancers, front 2 and rear 4. CHROME WHEELS (Eye Candy) 5. Handlebar risers OK,here is the report: The front end and feel is AWESOME. I was skeptical about doing the Centramatics but figured since I rode one with them and it seemed to make the older Wing ride better than mine Why Not? My result..They are a FANTASTIC product and you cannot see them when installed unless you are really looking hard for them. It almost feels like it makes the bike even more stable and yes the balancing is great to. I keep wondering if it makes more of a "GYRO" effect"? Im telling you it almost feels as if the bike would stay up by itself when you stop .(I dont know how else to explain it.) The handlebar risers are fantastic, they cost me $25.00 but it raised the bars at the end about 1 1/2 inches and seems to have pulled back about 1/2 ,3/4 of an inch. I can honestly say that I now have the most comfortable bike Ive ever ridden because of this Mod. The "Chrome Wheels"..whast else can I say..when I turn on the "Ring Of Fire"and it shines against the chrome wheels man is it a showstopper. I had people in every town pulling up beside me giving me a "Thumbs Up". All in al other than the Chrome wheels it was $500.00 .For those interested the Chrome Wheels was $700.00 installed with new bearings seals everything ready to bolt on and yes he will ship them this way so all you have to do is order wheels, put them on and send your old wheels back..IF you dont wanna go to Houston to have it done for free!
  14. need yellow reflector by front brake caliper just need one. If anyone has one let me know thanks
  15. Would somebody mind taking a photo and a measurement for me? I'd check my own but the bags are off and before I install them back on I'm going to make a little modification. Plus it's cold and dark out in the garage. I need to know the distance (of the gap) between the front of the saddlebag and the back of the bag guard/frame... in the vicinity of that little horizontal ridge. In the area where the yellow arrow is pointing in the following photo: Thanks folks!
  16. Ride a 2007 RSTD. Want to replace the front floorboards with pegs; the purpose is so my heels can drop which will lessen the pinch/strain in my hips. I've been looking and asking, with no success. My current option is to cut off the back of the front floorboards. That will get me the drop I want. It would be nice if there were a different solution. Any suggestions? And no, not new 'forward controls'. Way too expensive, and won't solve the issue. Thanks.
  17. hope this works............jusat checking to see if this front fender guard from an 86 will fit on my 91. Thanks for any help http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4712.m2000054&item=260646018515&viewitem= DAvid
  18. Since Eck asked, I thought I would post my initial observations on my new Goldwing compared to the RSV. With the crappy weather we've had this week I've only been able to put about 180 miles on it. First, these bikes are different with good and bad attributes for each. The Wing is an easier bike to ride. With the greater engine torque starts are effortless and you don't have to shift as frequently. I rarely let the RSV get below 2500 RPMs and the Wing rarely gets over 2500. The Wing has incredible acceleration and I've been good during the break-in period. The Wing feels lighter, more nimble, and is easier to get off the side stand. Slow speed handling is better. The RSV has a better ride. It is smoother going over bridge transitions and road defects. The wing translates a lot of these bumps and vibrations through the handlebars. The RSV has better wind protection. I get significant head buffeting on the wing and that is a dissapointment. I've got to work on that. The brakes on the Wing are better. They are linked so you get some rear brake with the front and some front with the rear. The riding position is more relaxed on the RSV, of course we all knew that. I do prefer the floor boards and heel/toe shifter. For height challenged individuals like myself, the Wing sits a little lower and I can get my feet planted better for parking lot manuevers. The dash layout and instrumentation on the Wing is better and the audio controls are more intuitive. The Wing is quieter with less mechanical noise between your legs. I think the RSV is easier to work on. Everything is covered on the Wing. I'm sure I'll learn how to get under the covers. Probably this weekend when I install my GPS and a 12V outlet (which should have been standard on the bike). As I stated earlier, these bikes are different. I wish I could combine the features of both and create the perfect bike. The choice of one over the other is a series of compromises. On the Wing I compromised leg comfort. Your mileage may vary. Dennis
  19. OK,anyone that has ridden a Gold Wing especially over a rougher road knows the front fork set up could use some attention..dont get me wrong it is super on the highway but you still feel harsher bumps thru the handlebars. That being stated I just got home from a ride with another Wing that has the "All Balls" and Progressive Rate springs installed on it...plus a Kumho Run Flat Car Tire. My observations:Night and day difference having the progressive rate springs in the front end,the all ball head bearings are very stable feeling, seems more responsive also. The progressive Rate springs took 95 % of harshness out..Im saying 95% because after appx 50 miles or whatever riding it I didnt feel the harshness but Im sure as with any bike a hard enough hole in the road will make it jolt you. The Car Tire....I will not be going with it..I felt very unsure on it as it seemed to want to roll as I would corner, that being said the guy that owns it can easily scrape the boards and corner as good if not better than I. On April 5th I will be going to Houston to have the all balls and progressive springs plus shock bled and reloaded plus Chrome Wheels installed. For $275.00 I am having the All Balls and Springs put in,I am supplying the springs. I think this will be the best money I have spent tweaking a bike compared to the ride I took today. I hope this write up helps anyone with questions on the front suspension. IM me if you need the guys number or if OK with Freebird I will post it here..Tom
  20. OK, I have been reviewing a lot of info regarding repacking mufflers, the following thread being one of many. Nothing that I've come across defines which is Front and which is Back. In my mind, the front is the inlet end and the back is the outlet (or the tail end of the muffler where the exhaust cometh outeth...) Am I right or wrong? :scratchchin: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42168&highlight=repack
  21. Looking for the chrome horseshoe shaped accessory on the bottom of the front fairing just above the front fender.
  22. Yesterday I drove up to John Furbur's shop outside of Allen Town PA to get a new rear with the Vmax gears. What a nice guy to deal with. He must have 50 plus bikes in his shop and gave me the royal tour. He went through the history of almost every bike. 200 + MPH crotch rockets with turbos, his Ford 5.0 V8 bike, some special Italian sports bike that at 12 years old was a head of it's time, and of course tons of Vmaxs. He also has a RSV minus the trunk all tricked out. It is lowered, has drag type handle bars and a large diameter after mart exhaust system that only the mufflers are the slip on part. I asked him who made the pipes, but now with CRS I can't rember. Then he takes me out side, opens up a trailer and says this is what I just went to CA to buy for 2K. At first I thought it was a boat. But no a custom 2 seated body made out of aluminum, a steering wheel, 2 wheels in front and one in the rear with Vmax motor in front and Vmax rear in back. He takes it out of the trailer, starts it up and then says" take it around the block I can't fit in it until I move the steering wheel". He is a very tall/big guy. I'm sorry I wish I would have brought a camera along. Hey Freebrid any chance you could email John and ask him to send you a picture of that thing so you could post it on the site? Well hopefully this weekend I'll get the new rear installed, Also a big thank You to Freebird and Sleeperhawk for their excellent write ups on removing the rear and greasing the swing arm. They came in real handy while taking the rear end of the bike apart.
  23. With all the good reports on Venturerider about the Michelin Commander I was hyped to buy them for my '06 RSTD. NONE available anywhere I could find. Called Michelin and the tech rep said they've discontinued them in the sizes 150/80-16 (front) and 150/90B 15 (rear). So unless someone can direct me to a source for a matched front-rear set of Commanders, I'm looking for a recommendation on the next best option. Avon Venom ? Please and thank you.
  24. just purchased an 01 RSV that looks brand new. it's a real eye catcher. I sold my gl1800 and wanted something with a bit of an attitude and the rsv is just right. the only thing i don't like is that high ptich whine and the confusing radio controls. Looking forward to many miles of crusin. I live in the piney woods of northeast texas. i would like to add some lights to make me more visible front and back. any suggestions as i haven't had time to look around yet. also is there a particular brand of tire that is everyones favorite. thanks, David
  25. I have a 2006 and take great care if this bike. I have always has scheduled mait done and with every trip I have always asked about the front end wobble. I have always been told this is just part of the bike, weight transfer, etc....I have had the steering head tightened, air in the front forks, new tires, et all. I have never had a bike do this and just about at my wits end. I talked to a Yamaha customer support rep and they agreed with me this is not normal. Going to take it to a new dealer to have this looked at. Anyone else had this problem and if so what are some things I might be missing??
