  1. I have been reading and reading and reading and not getting a good feel for my situation. So I will ask the experts! I have a new Piggybacker XL that I bought last year and haven't used. I'm getting ready for a trip in August so figured I should try this thing out. I find a slow speeds I have a very bad shimmy and smooths out a little the faster I go but to tell you the truth I didn't feel very good the way it handled so I kept it at 80kms max/48mph. I wouldn't dare go any faster and headed back to the garage. These are my specs. Trailer Tires - 28psi Rear Shock - 26.5psi Front Tire 42psi Rear Tire 49.5psi Front Forks - I guess 6lbs? on pump 3 strokes before 10Lb mark Tongue Weight 33lbs (weighed by lifting off ball....it was 28 when i chked off bike) Trailer Weight 248lbs (weighed with scale on each tire with tire on opposite side level with scale) Trailer Tires were balanced So what do you think...... Is it possible my tires are not mounted square to trailer frame? Looking for ideas.....I have heard it said many a time that you don't know its behind you so it has to be something I'm not doing right.I can tell you I knew it was there and scared the crap out of me..... Thanks Keith
  2. So I had a new Dunlop E3 Front tire mounted and balanced. For the record the date code is 3707 and came from Tucker Rocky via my Independent local dealer. Been riding everyday to work to scrub the tire in and was noticing a a very mild hop or bounce. Its most noticeable around 40 mph and originally thought it was road surface, but noticed it on different roads and surfaces. Its more obvious on decel. Given that I hadn't noticed this ( or remembered it) with the OEM Bridgestone front with 16k miles, I thought it was odd. Theres is 1 1/2 ounces of weight on the tire, in close proximity to the valve stem. Yesterday, after the bike sat up over night, I jacked the bike up, spun the front wheel and could see a notable flat spot in the tire, with the naked eye just using the fender tip as a reference. Spun it several times and marked the spot with blue tape. Today, with the weight off the front wheel for 24 hours, I could not find the flat spot as easily as yesterday (other than the blue tape). So I set up a reference bar across the tread supported by bricks. When I spin the tire, the difference between the tire touching the bar and not is about 1/16" The 1/16" Gap is still where the blue tape is. I haven't marked the start and stop points for touching and gap, but it touches for a portion of the rotation and there is a gap for a portion. I stop rotating when I perceive the gap to be widest and that's the 1/16" point. Would this tire be considered out of round? Should I do this test with the tire warmed up? (Although the hop doesn't seem to go way with the tire warmed up or after riding awhile) Folks with E3's, do you notice the tires flat spotting if you let the bike sit? Thanks, RSTDdog
  3. Well I have new tires coming tomorrow and I have to take off my tires and take them to the dealer for mounting and balancing I found the tech article by frebird on rear tire removal is there one for the front tire? Are there any others for reference and what other things should I be doing with the tires off besides greasing the rear splines Jeff
  4. I finally finished repairing the plastic on my bike and so it was time to paint. Since I wanted to change the color of the bike I pulled the front tire to get the front fender off. I shot a layer of clear coat to smooth it out before painting a base coat and then it was time to go to work for the night so I left the tire off. After painting everything today I tried to put the front tire back on and... WTF?! The front axle doesn't fit in the the forks any more. It's like the axle bolts are too tight but they are so loose they might as well not be there at all. Any suggestions would be welcome. After all it's a shame to finally get done fixing the bike and be stuck with the front tire off.
  5. I need to buy tires and I have a couple of question #1 - 150/80-16 or the narrower MT90B16 on the front #2 - how many of you put RIDE ON or some other product in your tires #3 - Is there anyone out there in WI that has a tire changer that would be willing to give me a hand changing my tires? I would appreciate the help! FYI - I am going to buy the Elite 3's for tires they seem to be the tire of choice for a majority of the people on this forum Thanks and ride safe Jeff

    Sturgis 2010-a few pics

Made it home after 14 days on the road. 2,477 miles. Here a few pics of the bike/trailer combo. I took several pics on the last Saturday of the event in and around Sturgis, at 0730 local time after a good rain, when the streets and venues were mostly deserted. These are not your usual, crowded street-scene shots. Since this is a family oriented forum, I cant post all of the...uh...fun photos. But trust me on this, the road in Glencoe Campground called 'Pervert Road', has a well-deserved reputation. Adults ONLY. Just use your imagination on this. My rear tire found a nail so I had a new E3 put on the bike while in Sturgis. I think the E3 tire is a magnet for nails. Great tire, but I have yet to wear one out. Overall, we had a great time....and now its only 51 more weeks till Sturgis!
  7. Any body running a car tire on a 1st gen. I have been kicking the idea around but as of yet havent been able to find anything in my tire size. Any help wopuld be appreciated. thanks in advance David
  8. I have a 2007 Royal Star Tour Deluxe. I had a rear flat and had to have the tire replaced last week. Drove it twice and now have oil/grease leaking all over my garage. It seems to be coming out between the wheel and the shaft drive. Anybody have any idea what it might be..didn't have a single leak of any kind until this guy changed my tire. Is this something I can possibly fix..shop here wants $100 just to take a look at it and then will charge from there! Thanks
  9. I've been talking with Dave, over at Wide Whitewall Tires (Hobbycar.com) and he said he can have a run of WHITEWALL car tires specially made for the VR Darksider Members interested! They will be whitewall on BOTH sides, and they WILL be car tires in a 165-80-15 or 155-80-15. He asked me to get an idea of how many people might be interested, and he will get back to me on pricing info. SO- If it's something you're interested in, let me know. Either reply to the post or PM me. If you have any questions you'd like me to ask him, feel free, and I'll email him on Monday with the list of questions gathered! So far, one of the questions I plan on asking him, since they are manufacturing the tire, is can they put the VR logo, or the mottoe somewhere on the tire.. That'd be sweet... Maybe overkill, but who cares?!

  11. I know this has been talked about many times but I'm going to bring it up again. I think it's important. The 2nd day out on our 3 week vacation this summer I picked 2 nails in the rear tire on a Sunday. The only shop open was 150 miles away, so we plugged it and took off. When I finally got there I had two choices a Metzler or an Avon, I choose the Avon. I heard all the stories about the Metzler. The Yamaha dealer in Redding, Ca. was great, they got me in and out and took good care of me. Now the rest of the story. I am a Michelin Commander guy and the combination with the Avon never felt right. This past weekend I finally got a new Commander and pulled the rear wheel off to change the tires. Well to my suprise the Avon had cracks in the center of the tire and some small ones on the sidewall. Turns out the tire was 5 years old when I bought it. I was just lucky I took it off when I did. I never saw the cracks with the tire on the bike. Emailed Avon and they agreed it was dry rot, but they won't warranty any over 5 years old. Emailed the dealer I bought the tire from, Redding Yamaha Seadoo, and they are going to take care of me. Long story short, check those DOT codes before you put the tire on the bike.
  12. I mounted a new Dunlop E3 rear tire last week - carefully positioned the dot with the valve stem - only took 1/2 oz to perfectly balance the tire. That is the way it SHOULD be. But alas, on the way back from Don's carnival, with only 5 days and 3.000 miles on that tire, I picked up a big screw that damaged the sidewall and destroyed the tire. So with great sadness I ordered a new Dunlop E3 - came in this morning and I mounted it this afternoon. Same wheel, of course, and I carefully positioned the dot exactly with the valve stem, but did it take 1/2 oz???? Or even 1 oz or 2 oz?? Nooooooooo - How about FIVE oz of lead to pull this cruddy tire into balance? Yeah, you read that right - 5 oz! I ordinarily can't accept any tire that takes more than 3 oz of weight to balance, but this time I just wimped out. Shoulda broken the tire down and rotated it on the wheel to try and find a better balance spot, but it was dumping rain and I was just too danged lazy. And since I ordered the tire on the web, it wasn't easy to go demand a replacement, so I ended up just accepting the 5 oz balance.. But I still get to whine about it, don't I? Never had that kind of wild weight shift with Avons - just another reason I may go back to the Venom on this bike. Goose
  13. Last week I discovered my Avon Venom rear tire was coming apart, so on the 5th I ordered a Elite 3 from South West Moto. So today I was talking on the phone with a friend that I'm waiting for my new tire to get here, when my phone started beeping with an incoming call. It was South West Moto. They told me my tire was supposed to be shipped to me from one of their warehouses close to me but somehow got shipped to their Tucson location by mistake. Was told how sorry they were for the mistake and would overnight the tire to me at their expense so I could ride by the weekend. Within 15 minutes I got an e-mail with a tracking number and told tire was on it way. Members have posted before how fast they shipped and now I can say how good their customer service is. Plus was the best price I could find. Thanks to the members who have posted about this fine company.
  14. So I'm of the running matched tires school, but finances and an otherwise perfectly good rear tire (Michelin Commander with about 5k) have me exploring options. I can't get a Matching Michelin Commander front tire. Parts Unlimited is the only importer for Michelin Tires and they are on backorder since April. New B/O release date is 9/2/2010 but need a new tire before that. Going to the Moto GP Races at Indy end of August. Have 16K on the Front Brickstone and its time. My local independent dealer is competitive on tires with the net (within $5.00). Prefer to give him the business. He has offered up the Pirelli Route 66 Front as an option and close tread match to the Michelin. Saw Goose's write up on the Pirelli and some other comments and seems it would be an improvement over the Brickstone. I'm considering getting the E3 front now since its not much more money than the Pirelli and in another 5k or so when the Michelin wears, getting the E3 rear. E3 rear has more capacity which I like since I plan to add a tour pack. Any input is appreciated. Anyone with adverse handling experiences with this combo (E3 front Michelin Rear) Michelin Commander rear tread pattern looks alot like the old 491 series Dunlop to me. Thanks! RSTDdog
  15. OK guys. I screwed my courage to the sticking point and with a good buddy we are taking the tires off the 87. Following Freebirds pictures and a bit of native intelligence we did OK - except - for that daggone rear wheel brake caliper retaining bolt - the rear bolt that attaches to the bracket. It just won't come off. It is damaged as well. and the socket wont fit on it any more. How the heck do we get it off? The bolt head is chewed up something awful. Any ideas out there in Venture Land?
  16. So riding home thought the rear end felt a little mushy, but made it home fine. Got up the next morning and put a guage on it and it was dead, picked up a nail. Initially was going to just plug it, but since I bought the tire (mounted) from Discount tire and they fix flats for free, I took it to them instead. They un-mounted it, patch/plugged it from the inside and re-mounted it, no muss no fuss no charge. Guess that is why I buy all of my tires from there.
  17. What is the difference between the Dunlop Elite 3 front tires listed below. Since they are different prices and weights (by $16.00) there must be some significant difference. The only thing I see different is the Aspect Ratio. Which one is best for the RSV? Dennis Kirk lists both tires for RSV fitment. What I really want to know is which of these two tires do I want and why one over the other? Would I notice an Aspect ratio difference from 80 to 90? On Dennis Kirk site more people reviews the 90 Aspect Ratio tire. Is that because it is $16 cheaper or a better ride and life? One other detail, I am considering the Dunlop E3 because I can not get the Michelin Commander which I already have on the rear. Michelin has no idea when the 150/80 16 may be available. My Dunlop 404 front will need changing before to very long so I thought the E3's would be a good alternative choice. But which one??? What do you think???? $107.99 * Dunlop Front Elite 3 150/80H-16 Blackwall Tire (1 Review) weight 17.70 pounds Dennis Kirk Part #: 543447 Manufacturer Part #: 407989 Aspect Ratio: 80 Construction: Bias Position: Front Rim Size: 16 Sidewall: Blackwall Speed Rating: H Tire Classification: Touring Tube Type: Tube or Tubeless Units: Each Width: 150 Compared to: Dunlop Front Elite 3 MT90HB-16 Blackwall Tire $91.99 per tire (14 Reviews) weight 16.06 pounds Dennis Kirk Part #: 542887 Manufacturer Part #: 407990 Rim Size: 16 Width: MT Aspect Ratio: 90 Construction: Bias Position: Front Sidewall: Blackwall Speed Rating: H Tire Classification: Touring Tube Type: Tube or Tubeless Units: Each
  18. just found a three inch long nail in my almost new rear Avon Venon. i pulled it and plugged it. what are your thoughts on plugging tires? the nail when in straight and on the 'leaning' portion of the tire.
  19. Need new tires on my 07 midnight venture want to go with the Dunlop E3's or the Avon Venom. I know there are other threads but I was wondering if anyone has boughten tires lately and where's the best deal. When looking at other threads I don't think I could go wrong with either but whats your opinion. Also is there anyone near me, Appleton WI, that might have a tire changer that would be willing to give me a hand changing the tires as well as any other things that should be done while I have the tires off (I was really bummed that I wasn't able to make the maintanance day in WI this last weekend). One other thing are the tires we buy off the internet first quality tire my local dealer told me that places like Motorcyle super store and Denis Kirk are all selling second, tires with flaws, which I don't personally believe. I think that was his way to justify his price over $600 and that was for the standard oem replacements. Has anyone else ever heard of this UPDATE: Tell me what you think of this I went to a local shop that sells dunlop e3"s got a price of $325 installed I asked the about lubing the splines when they had the back tire off and they said it was unnessasary and all it does in make a mess and that they actually wipe off anmy lube on the spline if there is any. So what gives I've seen tech articles on this site on how to lube this spline so it makes me wonder if i should even consider this dealer what do you think Thanks Jeff
  20. 1113 Monroe Street Sauk City Wi. 608-393-7445 We've got a couple of weeks to get this ball rolling. I will supply the place/garage, and I have a good selection of tools, a motorcycle lift, and my friend close-by has a HF tire changer that we can use. It would be good to know who will be here, who will be able to help, and who needs what done. And if anyone needs to spend a night, that can be worked out too. See you all soon, Steve
  21. Just returned from an 8 day ride to and through Colorado with 4 of my buddies....what a wonderful trip! On the way back to Indiana, one of the guys who rides a Stratoliner experienced a problem with his front tire and needed a new one. We were in Junction City, Kansas when the problem surface and a quick search turned up Brooks Yamaha in Manhattan Kansas as the closest Yamaha dealer. It was very late on Friday evening, so we booked a motel room for the night. Rode over to Brooks early on Saturday in order to be there when they opened at 9 a.m. When John told the parts dept what he needed, he said he didn't know if they could change the tire for him as there is only one mechanic on duty on Saturday. However, when they found out we were travelling and needed to get back on the road they worked him in quickly. It ended up that we were there for 2 hours start to finish....and they didn't "stick it to him" because he was without options. Their price was very fair for the tire and for their services. Get this....their labor charge was only $22, and that included R&R the wheel as well as mounting and balancing the tire. While the work was being done, the staff was very friendly....treated us like friends and neighbors....talked bikes and riding. When I compare this dealership to the one I experienced in Clarksville, Tennessee several weeks back, I am amazed at the difference. What a great place to do business. If you are in the area of Brooks Yamaha, pay them a visit. They seem to be a very good place to do business.
  22. Here are some photos of the Avon Venom tire that "wore out". The cords show in three places on one-half of the tire. I'm looking for some feedback on the following (so don't hold back ): 1) The tread wear indicators(TWI) on these tires are essentially WORTHLESS. How do you use the TWI? They are on the outer edge of the tire...where the cords are showing, the TWI looks almost new! 2) How do you gauge tire wear on these tires? Seems like tracking mileage is the most "popular" method. 3) It almost looks like the tire was over-inflated?? I usually keep the rear tire at 38 psi...but...prior to leaving for Charlotte (pulling a trailer) I bumped up the pressure to 42 psi. 4) If the tire is at 42 psi, and the ambient air temperature is +94-98 degrees, what happens to the pressure in the tire? Common sense says that the tire pressure could/should expand 2-8 psi. That means that the tire pressure could be as high as 50 psi.
  23. I needed to replace the tire on the front of my RSTD and had done the rear tire about a month ago. I used the Michelin Comander and really like the tire so I ordered the same for the front. Shop just about 200 yards from me ordered one and I made arrangements to have it mounted first thing in the morning so I could go riding afterward. I got back from running errands and stopped to pick it up and the owner told me the sticker on the tire said it was a front but it turns out it was the back tire. So he called the dist and they didn't have any fronts in the comander. It seems they are coming out with a comander II and have run their stock out and there are none available anywhere. So the owner ended up ordering a Dunlop elite 3 which is about 30 bucks more but gave it to me for the same price. Mounted it and put the tire back on last night. I hope I like this tire. Headed to WV for a week of riding the roads down there.
  24. I ordered a D404 WWW tire on Rocky Mountain ATV, because they had the best price. I was assuming that the D404 WWW had the whitewall to the edge of the tire. The tire that they sent, however does not look like the picture. The description on the tire is D404 WSW. When I look on the Dunlop website, it appears that the D404 only comes in a WWW, but this tire is definately not a Wide Whitewall. http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/productDetail.do;jsessionid=76C8C1F442BBE9670536DEE639C03ECB.westring1?webCatId=8&webTypeId=229&navTitle=TiresandWheels&navType=type&prodFamilyId=19444&stockId=140073&ref=gmc This is the site and the tire looks nothing like this. Did I receive the right tire? or did they change the Wide Whitewall Look? Thanks:confused07:
  25. ok im haveing a rear tire problem. dunlop tire 404 i think? its hot out in the garage so not going to check right now. what i want to ask is there some kind of stop leak you can put in these tires? it has less then 1000 miles on it since purchased last fall. and for the life of me i cant find one single nail screw nothing in it. i checked the vavle stem ect ect. but after 4 days she goes down. never below 25lbs psi. well today i took off for a ride and my center stand hit bottom ? i heard it touch the ground? i pulled into a service station low rear tire and rear air showed 22 lbs on the class ok low tire low shocks and 250 pound guy might do that. but im trying to find something to stop this slow tire leak maybe slime? something. anyone have a good product
