  1. You posted in one of my threads earlier this spring that rainy days are for getting to know my bike. At first as I listened to the tapping of raindrops on the garage roof I thought that you were right on the money. BUT...now that I have put the bike together from a truckload of parts, rebuilt and flushed the front brakes, done the starter upgrade, changed the o-ring in the coolant valve, flushed the clutch fluid, changed the clutch springs, greased the swingarm, upgraded the headlight and painted the bezel, changed the right side controls, put in a new battery, greased the speedo bearing and lubed the cable, lubed the throttle cables, changed and upgraded the shift pin assembly, changed all the side cover gaskets, added an aftermarket stereo and rear speakers, and...and...DARNIT I JUST WANT TO GO RIDING, MAKE IT STOP RAINING ALREADY, I KNOW THIS THING AS WELL AS I NEED TO FOR NOW...:depressed:
  2. I did notice this but I figure at the worst I will have to change the diaphragms and springs. I do know that sometimes when flushing a set of carbs with the slides in place sediment will settle in the slides which is simple to clean out as the slides and diaphragms should be removed and inspected before installation anyway.
  3. ON in the two oclock position while filling, and OFF should be in the two oclock position once you are done filling the bike.
  4. That was everything I needed to know. Ever since reading Skydoc's info on the early 83's having the same gear ratio as the v-max I have been asking sellers on ebay for vin info. I just scored the rear drive out of this bike for $45. JY31M00XDA001038, According to the info you gave this is what i've been searching for. I do know these are not as heavy duty as the vmax and fjr drives, but I only use my bike for commuting to work and back(30 miles each way of highway riddled with stop lights). :cool10:
  5. The last numbers of the VIN is the production number of the bike right?
  6. If the old fart shows up again just give him a red bull and some advil and all will be fine.
  7. This is from an old thread from Earl's rear drive swap; Now, this is for all who are wondering about the 83'VR final drives. As Yamaha entered the race to compete against the goldwing, It produced the 1983 VR and they used higher lift cams and the "VMAX" final drive. The 83'VR final drive has smaller bearings for the ring and pinion gears and holds less gear oil than the later model VR final drive. Somewhere along the way they realized they had created a "Monster" and due to some final drive failures decided to tone down the gear ratio and redesign the final drive pumpkin with bigger bearings and larger fluid capacity. They thought they had the 83'VR "reined in" by using the smaller bore Carbs. but as it turned out that 1200 motor was getting plenty of fuel! In 1985 when the VMAX was introduced, Yamaha already knew about the benefits of the VMAX gear ratio from the 83'VR and put that gear ratio in the redesigned final drive pumpkin. I have actually seen a few VMAXs with the smaller 83'VR final drive in them from the factory. They usually didn't last long. By the time the 1984 production run started, all of the 84' and up VR's had the "taller" gear set that we all have till the last year in 1993. So if you are one of the lucky ones that has an early production 83'VR, your bike was the "testbed" for the VMAX! How cool is that!?!? I hope this clears things up for everyone. Earl
  8. I wish I could, but it just isn't possible. If you would ship there would be no hurry and I would pay for everything of course.
  9. Click on vr assistance on the left side of the main page. Then click on "state" and it will sort by state. Tell us more about the trip. What states are you planning on visiting, etc.
  10. a right front upper and lower fairing in two tone blue would be nice, seems a bike that was previously laid down on the right side and spidercracked and a leaking master cylinder don't mix. And if one of those 83's is a lower production number with the higher gear ratio I would be happy to buy the final drive out of it. I think that would make skipping second gear a little easier.
  11. Yeah, if I was trying to run the rpm's that high there probably wouldn't be much left to attach the new carbs to.
  12. I can see from the pics they have the original torx screw on the caps so I will pull them and inspect the diaphragms and use the compressor to give all the jets and ports a good shot of air before installing.
  13. I have been dealing with plugged pilot jets on my 84 all this year. As most know seafoam doesn't work well on plugged jets and I didn't want to stop riding the bike long enough to rebuild them. Amazingly enough with the idle cranked up to 15-16grand i'm still getting 37mpg and able to ride. I found these on Ebay and placed a bid. When I got up today I was happy to find I won. $121 with shipping. Does anyone know if all 83's had the adjustable needles?http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&rt=nc&nma=true&item=380440103134&si=ZMX9op6qie0ucLl6clKQXmfoPKc%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME%3AL%3AOC%3AUS%3A3160&vxp=mtr&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
  14. On the way to work last night I got on the throttle in 3rd gear and around 6 grand on the tach the clutch slipped. This is the first time it has given me any trouble. I have a set of EBC springs I picked up on Ebay, anybody ever used them?? I am going to pull it apart this weekend and rough up the steels and put the new springs in. Anything else I should do while I have it apart that you can think of? I wish I could mic it but my nephew is going to school for machining and I gave him my mics to use.
  15. www.ronayers.com $83.88 for a new slipstreamer with shipping.
  16. I recently replaced my front brake pads with a set of kevlars and flushed the fluid. I now have excellent brakes. The bike will stop on a dime. The problem is the master cylinder has a leak when the bike is sitting from the handle side of the plunger. I am not getting any air into the brake system and as I said the brakes work flawlessly. The leak is not fast but fast enough that if left untouched the master will go from 2/3rds full to empty in about a month. Does anyone have a quick fix for this or is a rebuild in the only fix? Thanks, Ray.
  17. My wife totalled our Ford Focus back in March 2010, State patrol said she left the road on the right and over compensated to the left and flipped it end over end eight times. She went to wal mart, target and kohls, and was on her way home, but never remembered any of it. Broken scapula, all ribs on the left side, and tailbone. Still recovering and still doesn't remember anything from that day. I hope none of you or your loved ones get a call like that one; Mr. Hammond your wife has been in an accident, but don't worry the medi-vac helicopter is on it's way!!!
  18. Inspect the slider itself very closely. I had the same problem and found a hairline crack in the slider was the culprit.
  19. I really like riding my 84 basket case I assembled this spring, but am thinking of doing the fjr rear swap for the low end torque and i'm thinking it will help when skipping second gear. My question is what years from an fjr1300 will fit? I know someone on here sells the shim(skydoc I believe) what else is necessary besides elbow grease? Thanks, Ray.
  20. Inspect your slide as well as the diaphragm. My 84 had the same trouble when I assembled it this spring after it had sat for 5 years. I found a fractured slide was the problem.
  21. WOW 25 years, Thats great..CONGRATS... If my math skills are serving me correctly you must have started building that garage right after your honeymoon!!!:rotf:
