  1. Yes, I see by the parts blowup that they are in 2 pieces. Those particular shims would affect play "in - out" versus "clockwise - counterclockwise" action on the driveshaft...wouldn't they? I was thinking that maybe the pinion shim which is on the left side versus the output pinion might be worn, causing excess free play where the middle gear pinions mesh. Having said that, I guess either could affect the same thing. I see by the parts diagram that there are 2 possible shim sizes for the output pinion and 3 for the left side pinion. I'm curious if there is a simpler way to determine which shim size is needed other than using the formula as suggested on page 3-33 of the repair manual. Also curious to know if these shims wear out and if such wear would produce the deceleration whine symptoms which I (and obviously others) experience. Possible worn bearings...???
  2. YVW ... and I'll be trying yours next time.
  3. Yes, it's good info...thanks. From my perspective, there seems to be a lot of "play" somewhere and I have a whining kinda noise coming from somewhere down there during deceleration. By "play" I mean that when the bike is on the centerstand and it's in first gear, I can rotate the tire forward and back to what seems to me to be excessive. I can tell by doing this that the free play is at the engine end. Thought maybe there might be a shim issue or something. I'm pretty certain it's not u-joint related tho. Speaking of removing the swing arm, does the rear shock need to be removed to do this? .... Guess I am looking for the easiest "fix" involving the least amount of disassemby. I have everything stripped down to the point of being ready to remove the rear tire. I'm at least going to remove the diff and inspect the driveshaft splines at the diff end and lube them.
  4. Been trying to find info about the middle gear and output shaft. Specifically ... how to check free play or gear lash ... can shims be installed... can it be done with engine still in the bike...etc? I know I've read before some info about this but can't seem to find specifically what I want by searching. Could someone point me to some tech info about this or maybe you can walk me through the process... got some pics? I have the service manual but all the info there seems to be based on the engine being out of the bike and with the cases split.
  5. "those" meaning..... you and the guy in the mirror??
  6. Yer just lookin for a free meal!
  7. Truth is...some people's kids really are UGLY! :rotf:
  8. Well thanks Juggler....no wonder my ribs taste so crappy! I always wondered why they were so damned tender and juicy and why they just fell right off the bone....
  9. Not mentioning any names here (you know who you are) but this is in response to your recipe that you so generously shared... Rick's RIB's... Rack(s) of back ribs... as many as you need. Cut into serving portions (appx 4 or 5 ribs each) Wash in cold water...salt lightly...let stand for appx 20 min. In a bowl, mix some diijon mustard with crushed fresh garlic & some extra virgin olive oil. Baste the mixture liberally onto the ribs (both sides) Sprinkle Rick's Spices liberally on the meaty side. Wrap tightly in tin foil so that the meaty side is up and the drippings won't drain out...set in a roasting pan...put in fridge for a couple hours. Heat oven to 450 Place ribs into oven and cook for 15 min @ 450 Reduce heat to 250 and cook for 3.5 to 4 hours (this may vary depending on quantity of ribs) Remove from oven and let stand for appx 1/2 hour. Mix BBQ sauce (I used mixture of Spicy Szechuan, Thai Peanut sauce, HP sauce, and Sweet Chili sauce) Remove ribs from foil wrap and baste liberally with sauce mixture. Heat BBQ to 450 or so Place ribs meaty side down and grill for appx 5 min. Flip over and baste with BBQ sauce again. Serve with your choice of side dish (I love salads) If you don't like "salty" taste... eliminate salting at beginning. ps..Rick's Spices...sorry, that's a secret!
  10. maybe Yamaha will take over the plant and start producing a 3rd gen venture..........
  11. since you are riding a second gen, a bunch of gerbils and a circular cage will prolly fall out... :rotf:
  12. What an awesome day it was today. Beautiful sunshine...warm... we went to the the insurance co and got a 1 day permit and took off around 11:30am ... just got back about 5:45pm. First ride of the year it was... first time ever that I smoked a Harley rider before the end of February!!! We are so pumped and exhilarated it's indescribable! I pulled her into the garage, put her up on the centerstand and gave her a kiss and a thank you for yet another safe and trouble-free ride. Gawd I love this scoot!
  13. Last summer I took a trip out to Saskatchewan... she purred along across the flats of Alberta & Sask with cruise on @ 140 km/h which is around 86mph... dunno what it did for gas mileage but overall trip came out over 40mpg
  14. Awesome weather here on the West Coast... sunny with highs of 13 celcius today... gonna get a 1 day permit and go for a ride....YEEEAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!!
  15. When I'm on a 2 lane highway, and find I am following one or more vehicles, I almost always pass because I'd rather drive at my own pace than be constantly adjusting to the pace of those in front of me. Our freeways around here are mostly 4 lane (not 6 or 8)... There are many signs that say "slower traffic keep right" ... I almost always ride in the left lane but what's crazy about many of them in the left lane is that they seem to think the right lane is for going the speed limit and the left lane is not restricted... DUH!
  16. DITTO what you say... I have a "noise" coming from that area during deceleration.... may well be a similar situation happening here.
  17. I had a similar whine...it disappeared when I changed the tire. Avon venom X's before and after...strange tho, the one I replaced really wasn't worn out.
  18. Well, I got the product...arrived here in less than 2 weeks. Total cost including shipping to Canada was $129. I reverse-flushed the coolant, put in a can of rad-flush....ran it for about 15 min at around 2000 rpm....reverse-flushed it again. Then I installed a new 180 degree thermostat and at the same time replaced the thermostat housing (was rusting thru at the seam), put a new upper rad hose on and put the Thermagasket in...ran it again around 2000-2500 rpm for 15 min (after it came up to temp). NO MORE LEAK!
  19. I don't have a clicking noise coming from my rear end but..... that "blat-a-tat-tat" accompanied by a distinctive smell sure is bothersome~!

sounds like we got a few things in common there Sailor...my mouth is waterin. Ribs have to be my all time favorite. Care to share your recipe for them ribs? ... I'll have to think about mine coz I never seem to be consistent when it comes to cookin...but it generally turns out great.
  21. He's takin a rest from ridin at the moment but here's my "buddy"!
  22. HA! ... there is one...and only ONE method necessary for that! ... DUMP IT... and put something else on... anything...windows 3.1 even LOL (exception... DO NOT put Windows Millenium on ... it's about parallel with Vista ...arrrgghhhhh)
  23. Newman, glad you got a chuckle outta that ... I'm right there with ya ... but more often than not, it's the users I'd like to do the physical boot to LOL. At the present time, I administer and support a small network of just under 100 users and 5 servers running Win2003 enterprise. This group isn't too bad but over the years there's been quite a few folks I'd liked to have said something like.."you're too stupid to own a computer...take it back"... but ya can't do that...just gotta have a lot of patience. It's no wonder I'm bald today tho LOL
  24. Computer terminology .... "boot" is a commonly known word. There are 3 ways to "boot" the computer... Cold Boot ... this means starting it from a power off state. Warm Boot ... this means doing a "restart" from an already running state. Physical Boot ... this means KICK THE CRAP outta it when nothin else works.
  25. good idea Don and as I'm one of those ones that "do it for a living", I'll glady pitch in whenever I can.
