I'm talking to you folks who have to put your scoot up for the winter. I am just getting over a really bad bout of gout and just today rode my RSV for the first time in 3 weeks, gosh it felt so good to be back on her. I was going NUTZ without riding and that was just 3 weeks. I can't imagine what an entire winter would be like. Actually I lied, I did get a test ride in on Saturday albeit a short one to test my ankle. I live on the East coast of NC and our winters are moderate enough. There have been some cold days and I have ridden 50 to work in 17 degree temps, but for the most part the days haven't been too terrible this past winter. You folks must be going stir crazy. My heart goes out to you.

I have had both back rests and like was mentioned above they are both QUALITY products. Of the two I prefer the Utopia although it was harder to install, it afforded me more and easier adjustments and better suited my riding. The Diamond R was a great back rest, but for some reason it kept pushing me forward in the seat even with it adjusted all the way back. I had to put my feet on my highway pegs and push back to bend the brace to keep it from pushing me forward. This ended up pushing the passengers seat front edge back some. Never caused any problems though, just aesthetically not pretty. I guess you will have to weigh everyones opinions and determine how fast you want the back rest. Diamond R will more than likely have them in stock and you will receive it within a week and Utopia has to make them and you will have to check their website to get a ship date. Again both are Quality and I would own a Diamond R again if needed, but currently I love my Utopia.

Will keep him in my prayers.

My money is on the CB. When I bought my 99 way back when I had the same problem. Only problem was there were no online clubs to get info from. Took me a few days to figure it out. Never said I was the sharpest tack in the box.

Lowell I am sorry to hear of your loss. My prayers are with you and your family.

Well the Yamaha Trunk Rack has the Star Emblem on it in the middle if I remember correctly. Also it has metal strips running from the bolts on both the left and right side. The other one doesn't have the strips and is just bolted through the trunk lid. here is the Yamaha trunk rack. http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/accessories/acscitemdetail/5/4/83/404/all/all/131/0/detail.aspx

Help!!!!! - No Power
SaltyDawg replied to StarRider07's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Many people who have had to change the ignition out purchased key blanks and had one side cut for the ignition switch and the other cut for the saddlebag locks. From what I have read the lock only uses one side of the key. That way they only have to carry one key. Just a thought. -
Do the RSTD's have the same ignition switch as the RSV? If so that could be the problem, but it sounds to me like there is an issue with the battery cables. Maybe the ground cable is loose at the engine frame.

Looks like the Tail of The Dragon is on fire today. Blamed on a MC crash. That's just what the Tenn Highway Patrol need more reason to shut it down. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,351600,00.html

Actually I believe the Zumo has the ability to use XM not Sirius radio. I have an XM radio on my 99 and I doubt Sirius would be any different. Get a Ram mount that will fit your radio. http://www.ram-mount.com/ and you can either use the FM modulator in the Sirius radio, run a aux cable to the aux port beside the cassette player, or put a splitter in under the front fairing and run an aux audio cable separately for the Sirius radio. The handlebars are 1 inch and so are the engine crash bars. As far as oil I too use the Rotella oil for diesel trucks the 15W-40 it has never let me down yet. Since I live on the East Coast I see no reason to go with a 5W oil, it doesn't get cold enough.

Grrrrrr Something Is Just Not Right
SaltyDawg replied to Everette's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Check where the wires come out of the bar between the passing lamp and the turn signal. That spot is notorious for slicing through the wires and shorting out. I had an intermittent problem that took a full day to find. It kept blowing the fuse when it rained and I found that the wire had been sliced at an angle and when it got wet it was able to short out. This happened several times to me even after I fixed the initial problem so I ended up running a wire external of the light bar, so far no more problems. -
New shock install

:rotf::rotf:They are not cheap but they sure are pretty. :rotf: All kidding a side, so far the one I have has performed 100% better then the stock shock. I am 300lbs and my Son is 230lbs and I have had him on the back and the bike rode as good as if it were just me. No bottoming out either. -
New shock install
SaltyDawg replied to chollahan's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I sure hope that shock is good. From what I have been reading the new shock is the same as the old one with just the vent hose being added. Failure rate seems to be pretty much the same as the original shock. Did it come off a parts bike? Hopefully it's good and you have no problems with it. At least you will know how to change one when this one goes bad. Save up your money for a Works Performance shock for the next one. Much sturdier, better craftsmanship, can be rebuilt, made to fit your bike and your riding style, but a lot more expensive. -

New shock install
SaltyDawg replied to chollahan's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
If I remember correctly folks were running them up beside the battery box and securing them there. Replacing the shock isn't terribly hard. Some have changed them with the tire on but I found it easier to remove the rear tire. -
Well that could be a couple of things. First off I would think it's a blown main fuse or possibly the ground wire came lose on the engine. The ground wire is located where the horn on the right side of the bike mounts to the engine. When you hooked the battery up did you get the sparks as per usual? If you have a multimeter check power across the battery posts and then turn the ignition key on and check power again. If you look back on one of my posts I had a problem at work, no power at all with the key on. Checked all the fuses they were good and then checked power across the battery and got 12.7VCD when I turned the key on it went to 0VDC in an instant. The battery was bad. Have you tried jumping it from a car? I was able to jump start the bike with a car even though the RSV battery would go to 0VDC with the key on. I know you got a new battery, but it is possible that the battery was bad. It's a long shot but not impossible.

I wouldn't worry so much about dropping it. It's bound to happen, they are big bikes and once they start going over it's almost impossible to stop them. Usually they don't do more than scratch the engine guard and saddle bag guard. The first time I dropped mine I was yelling for the wife and kid to come out and help me because I was holding the bike up and couldn't hold it much longer. Well I finally had to let her go and she only went another inch or two. I hurt for days because of trying to hold that thing up. They lay at about a 45 degree angle on the crash bars and saddlebag bars. Usually the reason for dropping one is because of putting your feet into something slippery or the front tire going into gravel. The main thing you should know is how to get the bugger up after she goes on her side and you are alone. If you have experience riding with someone on the back I wouldn't worry about having your wife back there. Other than getting smacked in the head every now and then I don't even notice my wife back there. I went from a CB750 to the RSV with a couple years in between and had no problems adjusting or riding two up.

Anyone know where to get replacement screws?
SaltyDawg replied to a topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Any motorcycle shop should have them. Like Ponch said Ace will have them, Lowes, and Home Depot should have them also. I got mine for the saddle bags at Lowes.
