I have the Utopia on my '86 with the quick release. My wife doesn't like to ride with it in place as it restricts her space. She has room to sit but only if she never changes positions for the entire ride - not happenin' Room for the passenger may be better on the second gen and others have moved the trunk back on the 1st gens. But - I LOVE THE BACKREST! Dave

the relay i'm using is smaller than the 556 that i'm using (instead of buying 2 555 i figured it'd be easier) so it still is part of the box just not included in the schematic for simplicity. on the board i'm soldering it all to it only covers a 6x4 pin area.
-
I've included a few more pics for clarification The sound in on the schematic is solely for detection purposes it doesn't actually come back out any where. R8 leads to the relay switch itself to power the flipping of the switch. the relay schematic looks something like the 2nd pic. By doing things this way there is no sound degredation from passing through all the little components and it makes it easy to swap the places of the inputs by simply swaping them on the relay. And yes they all should fit just fine into a 3x5x1 box thats what the one on my moms is like.

if you just need a 5-pin DIN cable (both ends, male to female) to extend what you have, the old AT style keyboard cables are perfect. I got mine at a local electronics part house for about $6.00. Dave

Goose- Depending on the snowpack and which directions you want to go, in addition to Middway (Swiss area) I'd be glad to give you a bunch of the rides in the area you can take. Please give us a call when you get here, I'd love to get together for dinner or something. Few ride ideas: Mirror Lake Road - Kamas, Ut to Evanston, Wy - Beautiful drive, lots of lakes and of course, twisties. Had a friend tell me this is as much fun to ride as Tail of the Dragon, but I don't know. (Abt 210 miles) - No opening date available as of today Bear Lake and back - Go up through Monte Cristo to Woodruff, then to Laketown, Garden City, through Logan Canyon to Logan, down Sardine Canyon to Brigham City and then back home. You can reverse the order also. There are advantages to going both ways. (Abt 360 miles) - Monte Cristo schedule to open May 22 Heber City - Strawberry Reservoir - Huntington - Fairview - Nephi and Back This ride can take you up Provo Canyon (past Sundance), out to Strawberry. Here you can return via Wolf Creek Pass (could be closed still) or you can go on out to Duschesne and over the top of Indian Canyon to Price, out to Huntington (hwy 10), up Huntington Canyon and down Fairview Canyon into Fairview City. Again here you can catch US 89/US6/I15 back to SLC or ride out to Nephi and catch I15 to SLC. (Abt 275 miles) Open Year round There are other rides out into the west desert that might be fun we can get you linked up on. Dave

Will do when I make one for my mom. Probably make it so that it fits in a tank bag or such.

Splitting the AUX input 2nd Gen, this is Working
utadventure replied to ablumny's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
Nicely done, this is what I did for my cb and ipod and it could easily do this for your inputs as well since you can change the inputs and outputs to what ever plugs you want. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=35272 -
...sure seems like. With another riding season starting. It was time to see how some of the work done would perform. First - I had the Rick Butler seat modification done. Second - New valve cover gaskets. Muffinman gave great advise on doing this right. Third- After 10k miles, time for a new rear tire. Metzler ME880 (I know, I know) Finally got to do more than a short trip today and check things out. I did a 250 mile ride today out into the west desert and to visit some of the old mining towns and have a great lunch (late, about 4:00 PM) - lots a fun though. The seat was great!! Thanks again Rick. After about 200 miles, I felt a little bit in the but, repositioned and never thought about it again. Gaskets, well, I don't see any indication of any leaking after running the bike all day at full temp. Rear tire should be completely scuffed in. I wish the guy leading the ride today was a little move agressive in the twisties but ... I guess I'll just need to go for another ride and enjoy the day. Oh. Normally I get about 32 mpg, on the first leg I got 42.7, second leg 38.8 and then about 34.5 on the way home (with a head wind) I don't know of anything that would really contribute to it but I'll take it. Now, if I can just get the smile under control so the wife doesn't think I'm up to something. Dave

Driver painting nails kills biker at stoplight.

To propel the motorcyclist 200 feet, she had to be going pretty fast. Not only did she not she the rider but must have completely missed the fact that there was a red light in front of her. Dave -

Here is a schematic of what I did. The R8 resistor goes to the positive of the switch. The switch I used flipped 2 circuits at the same time and had a normal open connection and a normal clossed connection. So the iPod went on the normal closed and the radio on the normal open. and the 2 circuits were just the right channel on one and the left channel on the other. The indicator LED I wired in parrallel to R8 so when the switch was thrown so was the LED. (If you understand all the techno babble then you should beable to figure out the on off switch and the power indicator light on your own) lol:happy65: Along with the schematic I have uploaded some more pics cause the first batch was blurry. Edit: Pls understand that while it has been successfull on my bike this circuit is still largely untested and un proven so if you deside to use this pls don't blame/sue/bad mouth me etc. if your bike blows up cause of it.

Hey All, This is Utadventure's son again. Lately I have been working on a project and now that it's done I thought you all would like to see it. I have a bike that did not have a cb installed so I bought an aftermarket one off the internet. After a while I realized that while it was nice to have a cb I would also like to be able to listen to my iPod while on the road. At first I just spliced a headphone cable into a 5pin din plug so I could do this. This didn't last long cause while I could listen to my ipod or my cb I couldn't listen to both cause they interferred with each other and i didn't want to ruin one with the sound coming from the other. What I wanted was a box that I could plug both my ipod and cb into that would swap between the two depending on wich was putting out sound. I checked at WingDing and searched the internet but couldn't find one that was sold seperately. I got together with a neighbor of mine and showed him what it was I was looking to do and together we came up with some plans. The box I built cost me about $35 and a few hours of soldering the components together. The box has 2 inputs and 1 output. Now the inputs could've been anything i wanted but i have a 3.5mm jack and a 5pin din. the 3.5mm jack is normally closed so even if the box is off it will still go through to the output. The 5pin din input is the cb, any time sound comes from the cb it cuts the primary input (ipod). The sensitivity to trip the switch can be changed so that it isn't tripped until the cb is loud enough. I'll be posting pictures with this post. The top has an on/off button, a power indicator light, and a swich indicator light to tell when the secondary input is overriding the primary. I've tested it in the garage, bike running and all, now I just need to take it out on the road.

Left Turn signal stuck on
utadventure replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I had the same problem with my '86. I bought a replacement signal relay from Pinwall. The relay was mounted inside the fairing and I accessed it through the headlight. Good Luck!! Dave- 7 replies

Clutch slips when engine hot
utadventure replied to motorbiketim's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Make sure the fluid in the line between the Master and the Slave cylinders is fresh. Brake fluid is hygroscopic (absorbs water) and can effect the clutch like you're talking. The water gets hot, expands and then partially disengages the clutch plates from the motor. Good luck!! -
1st gen radio information
utadventure replied to timgray's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I know this is a little off the original topic but bear with me. I'm not utadventure but rather his son. I have been working on a box that will do this. After searching the internet and not finding one for sale I got together with a neighbor and we made some plans. I have tested it and now just have to solder it together. What this box does is it has 2 inputs with 1 output. The first input is a 3.5mm audio jack standard for mp3 players and such. The other input and the output are 5pin din plugs standard for the J&M radio headsets. The input from the 3.5mm constantly plays through the headset output and is interupted only when sound comes from the 5pin din input. I use this on my bike cause i have an aftermarket CB radio and want to listen to my ipod while still able to hear the cb radio while riding in a group. This box lets me do this. Now because I make this box I can change the inputs/output to what you want for your radio and such. IE when I was testing this i just used 2 ipods (one playing constantly the other played and paused at need)- 76 replies

Here's a link regarding the MP3 port in place of the cassette player. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=21667 There is a wiring diagram with a couple of different applications. Later in the thread shows how I did mine with some pics. Dave- 76 replies

Adding length to your wrench or ratchet will increase the leverage. The key is to keep the wrench head or socket on the plug straight so you don't strip it or round the edges. Apply tension and then add a quick pop/pull to break it lose and then you should be able to remove it in a normal fashion. Good luck!!
