1. There was a car and motorcycle dealer in Cleveland, Rick Case if I remember correctly , that was giving a free MB5 with the purchase of an Isuzu pickup. Never could convince anyone in my family they needed a pick up truck...
2. Was $3.05 yesterday morning, most stations went back to $3.45 last night:confused24:
3. Welcome. I live in Hilliard. Would like to meet up sometime. Keep pretty busy with the kids schedules, but can get free on occasion. Feel free to contact thru PM. Kurt
4. Got mine yesterday also. looks nice. Thanks for putting this deal together.
5. Already in my watch list.....
6. I am planning on replacing all the lines and the filter. Havent looked inside the tank yet. ran out of time today. Hope it is ok, wont be able to line it until this winter. The fuel line to the carbs is black with the braided steel cover, so it must have been replaced once. I will have to find another shutoff valve. anybody have one? And about my helper, He is smart but he doesn't listen very well. He is 2 1/2, and he has to do things on his own, or at least try before he wants help. His sister is 8 and she used to go out and help me too, but not too much anymore. If only i could bottle their energy......
7. Ok, hit the wrong button..... I can pull the hose off. I think it is too large. It has a braided cover on it. Is that stock? Lastly, and I think this is my biggest problem, I removed the petcock and there is no strainer on it. I knocked a bunch of crap out of it. I still need to drain the tank and see if it is in there. But since the selector knob is broken and I don't know what position it is in, I wonder if it is "on"and it was removed to use all the fuel in the tank. So hopefully I don't need a fuel pump. here is a pic of the petcock, and my helper Sent from my MB855 using Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2
8. So an update.....pulled the tank and found a few things. First ,the line from the tank to the pump looks original....it is extremely soft and you can rub rubber off of it. Second, the line from the pump to the tank is lose on the pump. The clamp is tightened down all the way but I can pull the hose Sent from my MB855 using Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2
9. Is it a gear or sprocket that has outlived its useful life??
10. Man of Steel: The battery was new this season, but I agree with that advice. I will get it tested, but my voltage never dropped. Hoping I can get a agm battery this winter. reddevilmedic: Thanks for the part #. will save some time if i need it. peder: I hope its not the cdi....I have one of the replacement units from the group buy...When I opened my stock cdi, it had corrosion and the diodes were white and powdery, and crumbled when I touched them. This spring I went through all the connectors for the ignition/stator, etc and replaced each side of all the connectors one at a time. Something I just thought of. Will the bike die if the electrical connector plug going into the gauges comes loose? I ask because the lock tab on the connector is broken and I had to use several zipties to hold it in place. Thinking it is possible it may have come loose. Battery cables are tight, and I have replaced the fuse block.
11. I have put about 300 miles, 25 miles one way to work, mostly freeway on my '83 standard since getting it back together recently. Today on my way home, it started feeling like it was running on 3 cylinders (again), then got progressively worse. It was barely running on the off ramp, wouldn't rev and died at the light. It would crank, but not run. I pushed it about 200 yards to a parking lot and called work for a tow truck (I am a dispatcher for AAA- nice perk --free tows). After waiting about 30 mins, i tried to start it and it fired right up. It ran like it had up to that point. I made it the last 2 miles or so home. I do have the replacement TCI, mounted on top of the airbox. Any ideas? I am thinking fuel pump/filter? It felt like it was running out of gas.
12. I always use ngk dpr8ea-9, stock #4929, get them at autozone, about 2 bucks a piece.
13. I have nothing displaying on my cmu. Not even when turning ignition on, when it should go thru each item. It was working a month or two ago, but now nothing. Is there a common power wire for the display? The display lights up with the dash lights, but displays nothing else. While putting the bike back together, I did put a small gauge black ground wire on the positive battery terminal. (lesson learned: put down the tools when talking to your 8 year old daughter) The wire melted down, and i followed it to the main negative cable. It was in a factory crimp with a few other grounds. After that, I have had to run new wires on the taillights and brake lights on the positive side, not the ground. No fuses blew, and i don't see any other fried wires. Maybe some damaged wires that I can't see in the harness some where? Time for a harness? Coincidence? sun spots? UFO's?? :confused24:
14. Guess I should have bought the programming cable...... Gary, can i send it to you to program?
15. Well, I finally got the bike together last night. Rode to work this morning and had the cutout issue. Running at 4k rpm in top gear, steady speed, had the tach drop out twice and had the bike cut out for about a second once. Is putting the updated map in the unit seem to be fixing this issue?
16. Anybody have a jet block gasket for an 83? I probably have to swap another carb body out. I got everything back together and on the bike, and got it started. I was then checking that all the mixture screws were set the same. They all turned execpt for one. I could feel the screwdriver slipping so I took a look. The head of the screw was starting to strip out. I tried a few more times to get it out, but it would not budge. Then I tried an easyout, which broke. They must have had The Hulk put this screw in. It will not budge. Luckily, I have a spare carb body, already soaking in the parts washer. Just need a gasket to swap the jet block into the new carb. Also, anyone in Columbus, Ohio have a carb sync tool to use? I have an old Motion Pro mercury set, but I loaned it to someone a few years ago, and they were kind enough to let it fall over and it lost about half of the mercury. Pretty sure there is not enough left to use it properly. Thanks in advance
17. Thanks again to all for the info. This is probably my 15th or 16th set of carbs i've done. I guess not enough sleep and too few hours in the day can cause major brain lock. Anyway, I now have a bike that idles on 4 cylinders. I have one idle mixture screw that is stuck and feels like the screwdriver slot is damaged. It will barely catch when trying to turn. Hoping the pb blaster can work it's magic once again. Once I take care of that and a carb synch, it is on to the fork seals and maybe paint. I am hoping to make it to maintenance day this year. Couldn't make it last year due to a herniated disk. Thanks again for all the help
18. Well, that would explain why they were so damn tight. I figured they were the mixture screws since they were exposed, and someone had (tried) working on the carbs. Half of the screws on the rack were loose, the other half stripped. So hopefully i wont need to pull them off again. Thanks for the input. I expected a quick answer, but not this quick. Best $12 I have ever spent..............
19. Got the carbs on, and was trying to adjust the mixture screws, which were turned all the way in. All 4 were stuck. Got 3 of them loose, but the last one rounded out the screw head. Pulled the carbs, took the one with the stripped screw off the rack, and got the screw out with an easy out. Reassambled my carbs and reinstalled. Now it seems to be running on all 4 cylinders. But I had fuel pouring out of the small plastic overflow on all 4 carbs (pic below). Gave them a few taps with a rubber mallet and 2 of them stopped, but 2 of them are still running a constant stream when the key is on and after the key is off.I am assuming that is because the bowl is still full. I am thinking stuck floats, or float level Any input is appreaciated.
20. He is right here.......
21. Thanks to all for the input. I thought I saw something about removing it a while ago, but couldnt find the info. Now I just have to find the right size caps. Have only found larger and smaller sizes. Going to try NAPA after work today. They should have them. Already done, along with the new tci unit...have the carbs back together, waiting on a throttle cable (should be here tomorrow). Still need to replace the fork seals and put it back together. Hopefully I am on the road soon.
22. Finally got my carbs back together and decided to make sure nothing else needed attention before putting them back on. There is a black plastic box (air chamber assembly on the parts diagram) that sits on top of the motor. there are 4 lines going from it to each cylinder. 2 of my lines are cracked/ split. Do I need to replace the lines or can I remove them and cap off the ports in the cylinders? What does this thing do? here is a pic:
23. Thats probably what I will do for the rest of them. Give me something to do while I track down another carb body.......
24. Been a member of that club for years..... It is the right front carb.. can't use vise grips...my 2 year old put them away 2 weeks ago..been missing ever since..
25. Ever been called a dumb a$$, and known it was true? Finally had a chance to work on my carbs last night. All the screws that hold the carbs together are rounded off, so its time to break out the dremel. I get half the head of the first screw cut off, and the screw is still tight. So I do the obvious: grab the hammer and screwdriver to chisel the other half of the screw head off. Not sure why that seemed a viable solution. So now I need a carb body. And according to my wife, some common sense. Oh well, we all make mistakes, some just cost more than others. Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
