A new really bad noise.

I hate to be the one who says this but it sounds like the Driven Cam in the middle gear. It can split and slip on the splined shaft that drives it. A hard repair that you habve to split the cases to cure. I found mine by removing the swing arm and looking into the engine through the hole where the drive shaft comes out. You can see the driven cam and look for cracks or pieces of metal.....Good luck. -
I have bought from these guys. http://traxms.com/ I was happy with the price and fast delivery but they don't have all sizes of all tires. You might also try

You will definately need to split the case to get to the middle gear. I bought my parts from Ron Ayers but you may be able to find them cheaper somewhere else. There is a great thread ion here somewhere about doing the second gear fix. It's the same procedure.

Get rid of the Metzler before it strands you! Mine blew out 2 hours from home and I had to trailer it home. I won't use Metzlers any more.

86 VR- grinding bad
ChurchBuilder replied to Dano's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This sounds like the "Driven Cam". It is part of the middle gear and if the driven cam splits or cracks it will grind. It rides on a splined shaft and if it cracke the shaft will rotate without the driven cam turning. Look inside where the drive shaft comes out (after removing swing arm, u-joint, pinion gear, etc.) -
Sounds like the middle gear. Try pulling your swing arm off, pull out the U joint and look inside. You may see the middle gear or driven cam is broken. If so, you will need to pull the engine and split the case to repair.

Have you tried running a can of "Seafoam" through it? I run some through each season and mine runs good. -

Where are you planning to travel this summer?
ChurchBuilder replied to Yama Mama's topic in Watering Hole
We are going to Gatlinburg in May together and hit the Tail of the Dragon. I will be riding to southern KY on business a few times. I also hope to ride to Niagra falls and then on to Barrie, ON. I hope to have a busy riding season this year. July 4 we are considering going to Chicago. -

Stator Question
ChurchBuilder replied to 6pak's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Cut your white plastic connector out and solder your wires together. I think dirty connections toasted my stator. -
I get 40 mpg most of the time. I ride freeway to work and travel for work going 70mph. I have gotten 45 and almost 50 by riding slow but it's really hard to keep it under 60mph.

Battery Indicator
ChurchBuilder replied to okiefirefighter's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I once bought a battery where the holes were too big for the sensor. It was a cheap battery so I drilled a new hole and put the sensor in. It worked great. The battery lasted a couple of years too. Now I have a gel battery and I need to get rid of the sensor.
