  1. Here’s my experience with pulling engines and 2nd gear issues: Q1: I believe 2nd gear problems were blamed on a split thrust washer in the middle gear area. Can’t remember the part name or number but that part was cheap Q2: My 84 Venture never had an issue with 2nd gear but I bought a Vmax with no 2nd gear. I rode it for 2.5 years that way and got used to it. Pain in the butt so I finally did the repair myself. Q3: On the Vmax it would pop out under acceleration. Also was hard to get into 2nd. Finally it became difficult to get past 2nd into 3rd so I decided to fix it. Q4: I did not do a 2nd gear change on my Venture but I did have to change the middle gear do I did pull the engine and split the cases. It cost me about $550 for parts, gaskets, etc. that covered seals, gaskets and new middle gear part (splined thing I can’t remember the name). For my Vmax 2nd gear it was about $350 ( I had a spare 2nd gear from a Venture that fit right in so that was free). There are 2nd gears on eBay, etc for a couple hundred bucks. I changed the split thrust washer on my Venture when I was in there and never had issues the entire time I had it. Sold it with 76,000 miles this year. Q5: I did my engine work over a winter. One in 2004 and one in 2016. It took all winter but I took my time and wasn’t in a hurry. There is a great video series of how to build a Vmax Motor from the ground up that I watched several times. These engines are very similar so it would be a great help for you. I did the Vmax because I knew I could change the gears and I wanted the bike for what I paid. I think you might be able to find a newer Venture without the 2nd gear issue for less than what you’ll have in an older one. Good luck! I hope I answered your questions Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. I just got my 93 two weeks ago. I traded my 84 Venture for a boat ! I had the Venture for 13 years and loved it. Love my Wing too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. Is the gas coming out of the bowls? The rubber gaskets can get hard and leak. Or is it coming out of the drain tube? Those can get corroded and let fuel get by even if they are tight. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  4. Both bikes look great! I got a price of $700 to do a paint job on my Venture. Two tine candy maroon with me doing all the prep work. I don't think the bike is worth it so I may try this myself. Has anyone tried Killer Cans? $39.99 premixed candy paint Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. Diaphragms on the pump can get dislodged. Might open it up and check that Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. The fuel pump will click when you turn the key on unless the float bowls are full. Once they are full the pump will no longer pump. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  7. I had one get stuck on my other bike. I think I broke an easy out off in it too. I sent mine to dannymax over on the vmax forum and he got me a replacement carb. He said he has good luck getting the stuck air mixture screws out though. He won't have a replacement carb for an 83 Venture but it might be worth a try having him try to remove the screw for you. 8. I burned up a $150.00 battery by over charging for a couple of weeks so defiantly check with a volt meter Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  9. I started using Ride-on when I got some super cheap tires from the internet. The bike shop couldn't get them balanced very well o I ordered Ride-on. I now use it in all my bike tires. I mount my own tires and always us Ride-on. No slow leaks and a smooth ride Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
  10. I buy mine at a local hardware store. They sell chrome nuts and bolts. Ace Hardware used to have these Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  11. I just put a Venture transmission in my Vmax and I cannot tell the difference. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  12. The VMax transmission is almost the same as the Venture. The heads and carburetors are the big difference. Aldo the final drive (pumpkin ) has different gearing. I have read about people putting vmax heads on a Venture but I don't think the final drive will swap. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  13. I probably have 83 cables if you still need them. PM me if you want them and I'll go look Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  14. Yamaha changed the venture clutches to that type in 1987 so that must be the better clutch Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  15. The spring is different. It's the black disk from your first picture. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  16. Most Vmax motors are black. There are many, many interchangeable parts though. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  17. My 84 coils are good and I have a set from an 83 too so I'm not needing to change soon. I have a Vmax that I will be changing because a set of plug wires is almost as much as COPS. I found connectors for a Ford V8 so I bought 8. Now I have 4 extras! Sounds like I should keep my coils and spares instead of risking my TCI. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  18. I have a '84 Venture. What resistor and where would I pit it (them)? Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  19. I always cut the connector out and solder the wires together. My connectors all showed signs of heat and melting when the stator was bad. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  20. I plugged the 83 TCI into my 84 and it started right up. I didn't ride with it plugged in but it idled fine. I'll try riding this weekend. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  21. I'll give it a try and let you know Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
