  1. We have those custom fitted ear plugs with vents for hearing helmet speakers. Good protection for the hearing and significantly eliminates the high pitched engine sounds but can still hear/feel the low rumble of exhaust.
  2. Its a white p clamp, not a white plastic hose, that holds the the roll over valve in place and its immediately in front of the fuel filter when you are working from the left side of the bike. Not sure how you would get at the fuel filter without moving the fuel pump and roll over valve out of the way. Its by no means impossible to do but sure should be easier than it is.
  3. Thanks for posting that "Eck Mod" Eck. Maybe I can take a look at it along with your other mods at Ft Collins. Good idea about the sticky stuff to hold the nut on your finger. Man, your full of good ideas! Cougar's response about leaving that little nut off with no problems made me wonder if something simple like a zip tie would hold the roll over valve in place nicely.
  4. I have the shorter Clearview but have no experience with the JC Whitney. I believe the Clearview is better in the rain than the stock shield because of the greater rake. The water seems to shed a little better. I like the extra width for both the protection and the appearance. The shorter shield isn't that much of an issue for us as we are both "vertically challenged". Got it with the vent and the tint which is very mild but beneficial. Cheers
  5. Eck I'll be interested to see what you do with the other in line filter too. Rich99 I'm one of those guys with small hands and have changed my bulb twice without splitting the fairing but its a squeeze. If you want to change your bulb and it can wait until Ft Collins I'd be happy to do it for you there. RedRider Have to try it when up on the lift. Good tip!
  6. Changed my fuel filter yesterday and is it just me or does anyone else think that something as basic as a fuel filter should be a lot easier to do? Why would they make something like that so hard to get at unless it was to make work for mechanics at dealerships? The nut that the roll over valve uses is almost impossible to get your fingers on and I have small hands. Even hard to get a wrench back there. Wouldn't that be a good place for a welded nut instead of a loose one? Anyway, got it done and I'd do it again to save the cost of labor but it sure was a PITA. Has anyone found an easier way?
  7. Sounds to me like they used the wrong terminology. Said Battery Tender when they were meaning trickle charger would cook your battery if left on cause it will. I've had my bike on a Battery Tender for almost 2 full seasons. Just plug it in after a ride and its on all winter. Original battery and almost 32,000 miles and still strong.
  8. I'll just add my 2 cents. Have been living with the filler neck the way it was for the last 2 years cause I hate making holes in my stuff..... but I bit the bullet and put 4 holes in the neck as in the pictures supplied by Goose. Wish I had done it a long time ago. Filling is so much easier and I'm getting more gas in now in much less time. I used my punch and a hammer and just took it easy. I'm well aware that fumes are much more dangerous than liquid gas but I think you'd have to really make some major sparks to cause a fire/explosion and doing it with a punch just isn't going to cause a problem when held steady.
  9. Pretty much what Wayne said. For the luggage rack try http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com . They are 25% off and reasonable shipping prices.
  10. Sounds like a wonderful trip. If you haven't already done it you might want to check all the visable bolts for tightness. Several of them have a habit, even on new bikes to loosen up. Some of the culprits are the bolt holding the shifter pegs on just above the floor board, the bolts holding the passenger grab handles, bolts holding the chrome fender trims and the contraption that holds the trunk lid open on the left inside the trunk. Also, the rear hub oil was probably changed if you did the 600 mile service but it wouldn't hurt to have it done again. If it was done it would be fine but if not, it should be. Have a safe and enjoyable trip. Cheers
  11. Not familiar with the HJC AC2M helmet (is the AC2M full or half or?) but on my wife's HJC Flip front I had to cut the foam out of the helmet to insert the speakers and make them fit. Tried putting them in the little pocket space and she couldn't put the helmet on. All was fine then.
  12. Backing down driveways seems to get a lot of people. Did ya tell your wife or are you just going to pretend you know nothing about and it was done in a parking lot?!!
  13. Was this when the bike was cold or hot. If it was cold, were you using the choke? I always use my choke when the bike is "cold" just to start it then almost immediately push it in and give it a little throttle. Once its warm starts first time.
  14. I knew there was a reason I left mine on! Now I know what it is. Cheers
  15. Only time I've ever turned it off was when I disconnected the tank for removal. Leaving it on won't hurt anything. Not to worry!
  16. I think SleeperHawk gave you the info you needed. I'll just add that I decided to remove that small plastic pin because I found it to be a pain to remove and replace when I want to tale my lowers off. Has been off for almost 2 riding seasons and no harm done. Thereis plenty to keep them in place. I also put the Wagner grill over my rad. Just 1 of dozens of good items to spend your money on. By the way, welcome to the group and you are a luckey man to have a wife that found and got you such a great bike. Cheers
  17. I am so sad to hear this. There are no adequate words to express our thoughts and feelings. I pray that you find the strength you will need to get through this.
  18. I assume you mean for the speakers? Without knowing what make and style of helmet etc I think the short answer is that some hemets require that you cut for the speakers and some are designed to accept them without cutting. If its one of the type that require it I don't think you have much choice. Use the speaker as a template and try make sure the speaker will be directly over the ear for best sound results. The 2 or 3 times I've done it I tried to make sure the hole was not too large. Easier to make bigger than smaller. I used a small thin blade like a box cutter and carefully cut the circle and slowly removed the styrofoam. Others have used different tools to do the job but I think the thing is to just take you time My wifes HJC Modular has fabric that I left once I cut out the foam so that the fabric stays between the speaker and her ear. Hard to explain. Hope that helps.
  19. Lots of folks think that you have to take batteries in during the winter time but that is one of those myths. The important thing is to have the battery well charged up and of course the battery has to be healthy to begin with. But the cold won't shorten the life. When I lived near North Bay, Ont we always kept our boat and trailer batteries in the cold. So did the local marina. It could be minus 40 and they didn't freeze if they were properly charged up to begin with. I used to believe the same thing. Cheers
  20. Hi Paul. New bike looks great. Watch out for those bears this time. I put the Barons lowering kit on our 05 a couple of years ago. Go to their site and you can get the price and specs. Having said that, I removed it this past winter and like BluesLover, I had my seat cut down on each side and coincidentally I payed $100 Cdn too. Also added an extra insole in my boots. Together it has made up the difference for me and I'm pleased with the bikes handling. One reason why I took the lowering kit off was because I was constantly dragging my pipes. I noticed your nice looking turndown pipes and my first thought was, if you put the lowering kit on, you're going to beat them up pretty badly. I'd try to hang in there and see if you can deal with it once you've got used to the bike. Enjoy the new bike. You still at North Bay Toyota?
  21. Ya, I'd do it. I get my tires from a local fellow who only works on bikes and he patches all the time if its a clean hole and not in the side wall. Cheers
  22. Rick, scroll down to the Similar Threads listed below and take a look at the postings under the one titled "that old nail in the.....". It should help you. Good luck!
  23. When I put the stock links back on after using the Barons lowering kit links I didn't remove the wheel either and used the lift up/down to position the wheel so the links lined up with the bolt holes rather than using the 2x4 method. Found that worked well when working alone.
  24. Back to Nolan helmuts for a second. Sorry guys. Goose, I have both the Nolan 100 and 102 also. I really like both of them but the N102 really is an improvement. I agree with your assessment. The VPS has been helpful several times and the release mechanism is way better than the old one. I also like being able to take the liner out of the N102 to wash, although I haven't done it yet. They make a good quality helmut for the price. Will be interested to hear what you think of the 2 different J&M headsets. I have one of the Universal sets which was kinda middle of the road I think but will need a new one one of these days.
  25. Same here. Its hard to comprehend a tradgedy of this scale. Such a senceless act and I can't imagine what all involved must be going through.
