  1. Makes ya wonder how hard it crashed though, doesn't it:hurts:
  2. I feel for you friend, and I know what a PITA handling a heavyweight bike is in loose stuff. Man, I sure wish someone made a bike that rode like my Venture and weighed like my old 95 Ducati........sigh.
  3. I too have found that the local dealerships don't have any of the touring/riding stuff you really want. If ya want a helmet or gear or accessories around here (other than el cheapo junk!) you've got to either (a) order it online or (b) ride down to the BMW shop....kinda sad really. I "know" it costs money to stock inventory, BUT if you don't have it (and show no interest in getting it for your customer!!) ya darn sure WON'T sell it!!
  4. If ya wanna experience TURBULANCE, ride an FJR....Mine was AWFUL!!! Worst bike for windnoise/turbulance I've EVER owned, and I've ridden 'em since '68. The stock Venture was so much quieter/calmer I could not believe it!! I've now added a Yamaha with the extra 2" on each side and I like it a lot. The stock shield, cut down for summer by about 3" is noiser than stock, but not bothersome (to me at least).
  5. Before I bought my Venture last spring we looked HARD at the touring bikes out there. I was coming off an FJR and we wanted COMFORT. Wife has always talked about liking the look of a 'wing and that was the first thing we looked at. She climbed on and got right back off. Said it felt like the FJR (not comfy) to her. I checked out the riding position and thought it felt a little "tight". Anyhow, 20 miles further down the rode we got on an RSV. Wife's first comment "Oh, I like this..I didn't think you could BE comfortable on a motorcycle".. I climbed on, liked it, and the rest is history!
  6. Mine came in today. They really do look great, THANKS!!
  7. Rode a little over 150 today with my neighbor. BEAUTIFUL DAY, especially for November!!!
  8. Wow! Looks like an ICBM strapped on the side of your ride! COOL!!
  9. Kinda gives new meaning to the phrase "unsafe at any speed" don't it? Let's see, short wheelbase, fairly high cg... I love it....looks like they'd be a hoot to play with!
  10. Piston size! My Zetor 4 cylinder tractor (231 cubic inches) only makes 58 horses, but a BUNCH of torque. That's why twins will almost always generate more torque than a multi of the same displacement. Six cylinders are known for "high torque" in CAGES, where they WILL produce more (typically) than a V8 of similar displacement.... Also note that "long stroke" almost always equals "low revs".... Engines that really wind up are inevitable short strokers...
  11. Before ya go to the darkside I'd make just one point. I just read an article in MCN this month by an attorney concerning car tires on bikes. His point, and I suspect a valid one, is that insurance companies basically look for excuses NOT to pay a claim. Per the attorney, the fact that a vehicle is "modified with tires not designed for the type of vehicle on which they are installed could result in your insurance folks leaving you hanging if you crash. The rationale being that "by installing a tire not designed for the vehicle you've significantly altered the handling characteristics of the vehicle and that was a cause in the accident". Not wanting to slam anyone here...Ya pays your money and ya takes your chances. Personally, it's not something I'm willing to try until I see the go fast guys on the track use 'em, but that's just me. This insurance thing though....that may be worth looking into. You may want to check with the Darkside guys and see if anybody's had a problem:think:. And yeah, if you think I'm skeptical about insurance, you're correct!
  12. YES, ATGATT. I believe Murphy was an optimist....if you're gonna crash it's when you're LEAST prepared, and I'm too old for asphalt rash or bouncin' my punkin off the pavement!
  13. Y'all are certainly right concerning the whole marketing thing. HD has THE market for "cruisers", and there shops thrive on the whole lifestyle thing. NONE of the Big 4 really push touring bikes (Ya want a "touring" shop, go visit your local BMW dealer). It's not uncommon to even find Honda shops with few or NO 'Wings, and they certainly do not "push" the whole touring thing. WHY? Who knows? They're all into "other products", true, but bikes are pretty big business for 'em. Triumph and Ducati shops seem to focus on their bikes, but the rest of 'em..... I know I don't really care for the "big twin" concept..I want something smoother and more sophisticated. A 3rd gen Venture would be GREAT..will it happen? Your guess. Will MAMA YAMA push it even IF they build it? NO, and the other guys don't push their toureres. Yamaha doesn't push any of the others-possible exception being the R1 and R6 sportbikes. Think about it. When was the last time you saw an add for a Venture or even an FJR?????
  14. there were also Benelli 750cc and 900cc sixes AND the BIG (for the day) KZ1300 six Kawasaki...That one lasted for a number of years and made a pretty decent tourer.... Six in a row isn't a "new" concept for bikes...they didn't last because they were (1) complex; (2) expensive to make, and (3) no more powerful that contemporary 4's. I know BMW's gonna replace the K1200LT, but my bucks will be on a bike based on the all new K1300 FOUR.
  15. Methinks the Max was designed to go in a straight line...like for a quarter mile?
  16. Note that the bagger Strat is a "10" model and there IS an RSV shown on the Yamaha 2010 product site....soooo, 2011?
  17. Sounds good to me. This courageous young woman saved the lives of some of our soldiers while placing her own at risk...She is a HERO by any measure you wish to employ.
  18. :grandpa:I'm 58 on the good days, older on the bad, and a LOT younger on the bike. My little boy is a 39 year old Marine Gunny and I've got a 14 year old and 10 year old granddaughters:sun:
  19. I dunno fella's looks kind of like a new honda DN-01 automatic to me....
  20. Wow, what a Bill!!!!! Thank God you made it through. The bike CAN be replaced. I know what you mean about ABS. My FJR had it and I REALLY wish it was on the RSV. Maybe on a 3rd Generation IF they ever build one.... Stay safe!
  21. I've got no problem with us doing ANYTHING for the troops. The Senior group that the wife and I run at our little church has been sending care packages to deployed soldiers since 2004. Based on what I've seen and heard (son-3 tours Iraq, best friend just returned from Iraq, comments from others that have "been there") the guys in Iraq currently have a pretty decent supply train supporting 'em, fixed bases, etc. For them we just send "homemade goodies" (cookies, candy, etc.), while for the guys in Afganistan who are still "out there", we utilize a full "care package" with all sorts of things to make daily life more comfortable. I will support ANY of the ideas mentioned earlier...Just think it would be nice for us to do "something" this holiday season.
  22. Hey folks, I've been thinking (yeah, dangerous stuff that:scratchchin:) that what with Christmas coming up and us having a pretty good size organization, it might be nice for us to do "something" for the kids for Christmas. What I was thinking of was some sort of "group" contribution to perhaps the Marine Corps "Toys for Tots", or St. Judes. I would envision us sending individual checks made out to whatever charity we select to a single collection point, then one of our guys making a formal presentation to the charity on behalf of VentureRider. If we'd all kick in a lousy $10 bucks we'd raise more than $20,000 and THAT would make a real difference for a bunch of kids (And it would be some Great Publicity for VentureRider). Anyway, just a thought of something that might be fun for us to do this Christmas season. Whadda ya think?
  23. Wasn't it PT Barnum that said "There's a sucker born every minute"? Must still be true, 'cause the scammers wouldn't keep doing it unless SOMEONE "bit' once and a while...
  24. Remember to keep yourself hydrated, even in "cooler" weather!. Stop often and get a drink of water, stretch your legs and enjoy the trip. Also, be sure you've got adequate motorcycle type clothing to keep you comfortable (warm and dry) Ride safe and ENJOY the ride!! Caution though...it IS addictive.
