  3. I don't care about a dealerships service department.. I do all my own work myself. I don't trust someone else not to forget to tighten something and put my life on the line... If I have to have warranty work done, then I ask around, and drive as far as I need to find a really good shop. Every dealer is different. We can't answer your question. You have to find customers of the dealership your thinking about using.
  4. I've found with couples that ride, especially HD and Wings, it's the person on the back that usually has their nose the highest.. Go figure.. Let me fix that.. not all couple are snobby.. just out of the ones that are..
  5. True, they aren't cheap by any means, but they are GREAT filters.. I've been very happy with mine, and especially on the Roadstar where the filter sits directly behind the front tire, it's a nice piece of mind knowing nothing is going to fly up and damage the filter.
  6. I've used nothing but Mobile1 synthetic in my Roadstar. I've got 35,xxx miles on it, and it runs and shifts fantastic. I change oil usually between 5 and 7000 miles. The Scotts oil filter I use in it has a small magnet inside it to catch all the metal. There is never anything but a super light dusting on it. Much better than I've seen on other bikes running dino oil and with magnetic drain plugs.

  8. If your pipes are sooty, then you sound to be running too rich... Usually, when you put free flowing pipes and air filters on an engine, you will find you need to lean it out.. not richen it... The more air an engine pumps through, the more efficient it gets to a point.. . The more CFM you can get, the less fuel you need for a complete burn... With my Roadstar I went to a true ram air cleaner. It's strictly a funnel, with a free flowing filter in it. I also at the same time put on a forced air induction collector pipe. It it s straight 2 into 1 pipe, that has a ram air collector right at the point the two go into 1. This scavenges the pipe, so I basically turned the engine on that bike into a hell of an air pump.. When I got them on, I figured more air, more fuel... so, I put in bigger jets.. that was the completely wrong thing to do. It would hardly run... Turns out now, I'm running the smallest jets I've ever found anyone to be running in a 1600 roadstar, and when I tell people the size I'm running, they can't believe it's actually running... I also went from about 40mpg to 50mpg, and that's riding it like I stole it all the time... SO.. with that lesson learned, I've learned the better you can get an engine to flow, the less fuel you need.. that ended up taking me about a month to figure out, and running through about 5 different jet sizes to figure it out..
  9. When I was a little kid and whitewalls were the rage, my dad tought me the best ever thing to use on white walls. I don't have white walls any more, but after all I've cleaned I will never forget.. SOS pads.. best ever cleaner for them I've found.. look like brand new after cleaning..
  10. Here's my home made trailer from a truck box. I didn't build this one, but I bought it from someone that had it made. For the price I got it for, it would have been hard to beat the cost of buying all the parts and building it myself considering the work I would have to do. There are a few things I would have done different, but hey, this thing works great! I was planning on building my own using similar materials until I found this one for sale. I drove to Dallas to pick it up over a weekend, and even with the cost of the trip, I was still money ahead. This one isn't completely waterproof, because where they drilled the holes for the handles on the top they didn't seal them. They don't leak much, but I will take maybe an hour and seal them with silicone between the washers and the bottom of the lid on the underside.. Other wise, it is pretty water tight. There is a seal on the lid that seals it to the box. I've only pulled this one time, just this past weekend.. I had the cooler on the front filled with beer and ice, but I also had a second cooler inside to the very rear of the trailer filled with food and ice... it all evened out the load. I figure total weight I was pulling was around 500 lbs or so... You want the tongue to weigh about 10% of your load, or so that's all I've read.. I would guess on the way out, I had the tongue weight around 45lbs or so, and the way back around 35 lbs.. towed great both ways with different weights..
  11. I'm also going to make a comment about running premium.... Higher octane fuel needs to have higher compression so you get a more complete burn. Running premium fuel in an engine that doesn't have really high compression will cause a less complete burn, and also more carbon build up, along with lower milage. I would run a couple tanks of seafoam to clean out the carbon with regular fuel. I will bet you'll see better milage once you switch back to regular, and get all the added carbon buildup out of the combustion chamber and off the valves.

  13. Yamaha has a lightbar and running lights. You can either see your nearest dealer, or shop around on the web for the best deal. My dealer actually gave me the best deal I could find. OH.. not cheap though... but what's your life worth?
  14. I found that to not be true on my Venture... On my Roadstar, the number on the back of the cap is the same as the keycode. However, with my venture, the numbers don't match...
  15. Yeah.. I got issues with the tall windshield too.. it's gonna be replaced soon.. I'll still keep the tall for the winter though. Nice to keep the extra wind off you in the winter. I've got a tall and a short shield for my Roadie.. kinda the best of all things..
  16. He could have fried something... no telling.. if he hooked up the cables backwards at first, he could have toased something.. just hard to tell.. could even just be a fuse...
  17. I do some work on my own guns, but if you really don't know what you're doing, a good gun smith is good to know.. I've got a really nice piece I've kind of kept going for a few yeats, but it's time to break down and see a good smith.. Your life might depend on the condition of your bike, but if you are in a situation you are pulling out a gun, your life is even in more danger.. best to have something you KNOW will work... A smith will make sure of this..
  18. I've jumped many a bike with a car.. never had a problem... I've also jumped my old truck a few times with my bike, and also my wife's car... once again, never a problem... I'm wondering if there is something else wrong... What ever happened to "sold as is"?
  19. Thank you much Goose... The CB is turned off. I've only turned it on one time, but do know for a fact it was off yesterday. I couldn't even get it to turn on. I was trying.. I have a feeling it is the connectors. I had one day when I would turn the forks, and I would get a pop like the radio cut off for a second, then back on. Same story though, I can't make the stuff happen on demand.. just when it wants to... I'll be pulling the fairing in the next few nights... Thanks for the ideas.. I really don't want to send it to the dealer if it's something I can fix at no cost... try the easy stuff first.
  20. Radio Shack has a little battery opereated amplifier you can put between your XM and your input on the bike. It makes it quite a bit louder for $20... Personally, I would never ride with ear buds and music in them... blocks WAY too much sound and disconnects you from the outside world. Life is already tough enough on a bike.. why make it riskier? Not to mention most all states have laws against earbuds.. I know Virginia outlaws them because I live in VA too...
  21. I've been reading a few other posts. Appears some people have solved the problem by splitting the fairing, then disconnecting all the cables and using di-electric greas on them.... Also appears to be a connection under the seat. I'm going to try this first.. I jsut HATE taking my stuff to the dealer if I don't need to. Mine is an 08 that I just bought a month ago.. I need to split the fairing anyway because I'm installing Polk speakers.. BUT.. funny it started with the rain...
  22. My radio had been working fine with no problems... Then yesterday coming home from a trip it started to rain... It still played, and I could adjust the volume, but I couldn't change the station, I couldn't select anything to adjust, and I couldn't change inputs... none of the buttons worked.. I did notice if I would turn the bike off for a few, I could change things after I turned the bike back on.. but only for a few.. then it would start acting up like I mentioned... Any one ever seen this happen before? Want to find out all I can before I call the dealer.

  24. I can promise you if they did this to you, they've done it to others... THEY KNOW BETTER... They know what the warranty is for a bike. As stated, there is no such thing as a reduced warranty to sell for a cheaper price... I'd be all over this yesterday like mentioned.. I'd be calling anyone and everyone that would have an interest... Pure and simple, they flat out scammed you. Time to let go of your ankles and stick it back to them..
