  1. Well shucks, this is disappointing to hear. It is my understanding that one way a stator can fail is one of the coils shorts to ground (sorry I didn't think of that before ) When you checked the resistance of the stator did you also check the resistance with respect to ground? If not, I'd give that a go and see what you end up with. I don't know what the AC reading between each wire on the stator should be and I cannot seem to find it in the service manual either but having that one being much lower than the other two as well as the AC reading across the battery terminals does suggest to me that you may have a short to ground within the stator wiring somewhere. Sorry
  2. Nice! http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01924/charles_1924163c.jpg There you go - until that page gets moved anyways. I was in England for about 2 weeks last month and was surprised at the number of ventures I spotted. Several 1st gens and 2 or 3 2nd gens. I was in the Chilton/Didcot area for about 12 days then spent 2 days in London.
  3. Update: Looks like I have a few sources for the tools (Thanks guys!!!), one willing to make a long trip up and another potential working venue if more folks are interested. So I'll call this a bump and if there is no additional interest in the next couple of days, I'll go ahead and assume there is insufficient interest for this to be a multiple bike effort and make further arrangements to git-r-done. That being said, I do know that there are not very many members in this area, but figured I'd give it a shot anyways. Thanks to all of you who have responded.
  4. Do note that some have needed to put a slight shim inside the clamp to get them to stay put under high pressure.

  6. I will say that I have been impressed with their customer service and willingness (and quickness) to respond to customer inquiries. I too got the same attachment telling me to not part it in direct sunlight, by motors or pygmies. I had a similar conversation with my second set where they insisted that it was something in my garage that was doing it. I had two other bikes at the time, one had dunlops and the other had michelins neither of which showed any hints what-so-ever. The michilins have actually been on the bike they are on for over 10 years (I know that is a big no-no, but I actually haven't done more than ride that one around the block in quite some time). When I brought that up then they finally admitted that it is likely something with the tire or how it was stored in the warehouse before I got it (Both of those I thought were reasonable) and then agreed that it was likely not my fault. Anyways, who knows - maybe the goof-ball that was making them for a while slacked off when mixing the compounds and now he has been replaced with someone else... Best of luck! By the way on my last replacement my local dealer/tire rep replaced my more than half worn Avons with E3s and claimed it under Avon's warranty. I fully expected to have to pay some out of pocket since the Avons were rather well worn - I was there more out of principle to show them that there is a real problem with the tires as well after my first set of replacements the tire rep gave me his card and told me to call him directly if it happened again. So I did.
  7. Actually there has been plenty of extensive research in the field of behavioral Psychology that discusses this reinforcement technique as pioneered by Skinner in the late 1930s. Well, I suppose to be fair it was more or less his career or at least he is considered one of the main folks in the field of behavioral psychology. The contribution of the idea of reinforcement occurred from the late 30s to the early 60s. Slot machines use a principle known as a variable interval (or schedule) of [positive] reinforcement as a means to separate the operator from their money. Whether the designers of the slot machine have chosen to use that method to optimize their machines or whether the idea of the slot machine just happens be addictive as a result of the behavioral conditioning that is a result of their use is a different question. (I could go on and on about this but I'll keep a lid on it unless someone is interested...)
  8. Hmmm. I guess I should go look before I open my big mouth but I seem to remember some slight adjustment on the pedal. I don't think it was nearly 2 inches worth, but hmmm... I know there is one on the shift linkage. Then there is the adjustment for when the tail-light is activated... by the way if you really want an e-mail response you can 'subscribe' to the thread and have the system e-mail you...
  9. I don't recall what others think Avons vs. E3s in wet riding, but My E3s have been fine in really nasty [wet] weather. With that said, I am super cautious when it is wet out...
  10. What did I do? I'm guessing he already knew that. I also suspect he might know that they are the fastest too... Although, I might be a bit biased : http://venturerider.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=786&pictureid=4962 Okay, back to the regularly scheduled programming.
  11. You do have the best color...
  12. Best of luck to you! They [Avon corporate] "Gaurnteed" me that the sidewall cracking issue was resolved after my first 2 failed. Well, the replacement set they sent cracked even worse than the first (on the sidewall) and one of them started cracking/separating IN the tread itself. My local place (and the local tire rep) were profusely apologetic and replaced them with a set of E3s. I really do hope that the issue is TRULY resolved for you. I wouldn't mind giving them another go but I'll let some others be the Guinna pigs first. They do ride nice...
  13. Darn, I guess I should have posted this a few weeks ago when I had made my decision to not pay a dealer... Oh well. Thanks for the offer and you'd better watch out as I might take you up on it! I'll give this a few more days (I need to wait for my gaskets to show up anyway) and see if there is any additional interest. Depending on how it goes, I may end up taking you up on your offer and take a ride down to you. Thanks. I hope all is going well with what you had to deal with out in Az.
  14. Actually both of these posts make valid points. And I am actually rather consistently amazed with how fast things can get worked out on here and when a serious question gets asked, while there might be some 'jabbing' or whatever, the issue(s) or questions do seem to be addressed in a reasonably quick fashion. Although, I could definitely see if a new member were to pop in on one of the more 'involved' threads, they might get the wrong idea. Having met a handful of you lunatics, I know that I... ahem... fit right in.
  15. EXACTLY!! Oh wait a minute...
  16. Actually this ought to be pretty easy to put together. It would just entail forcing all of Rick's posts into this 'special' thread... Right? :stickpoke:
  17. We'll see what kind of turn-out we end up with and I'll be in touch. Thanks a lot!!
  18. Jerry: I'll definitely keep you in mind. You do have a nice set of garages... We'll stay tuned for the next few days to gauge how much interest there is and where the most interest lies then go from there. Thanks!!
  19. Thanks a lot Dave! I'll keep this in mind.

    Speaker

Bubber: I know this is NOT a direct answer to your question but something you could do to get a slight boost out of the OEM speakers is to install a set of baffles. That is, 'shield' the rear of each speaker with a cone to direct ALL of the sound towards the rider(s). Just a thought.
  21. Hmmmmm...
  22. NICE!! I sure hope I won't be too severely jet-lagged and can make it up for part of the meet!
  23. Well that time is upon me. I have rolled over 52k and want to go ahead and get this beast of a maintenance item out of the way. Not to mention the valve cover gaskets are starting to look cracked and stuff (obviously, from the outside) whether that means anything or not, I don't know. I do know that I am starting to get some seepage out of the back right cover (into the spark plug hole) and mileage wise I am a tad overdue. So I have some questions. First of all I am wondering if there is any interest in a valve adjustment day sometime in the next couple of weeks? I can host BUT I still need to order that fancy pants "J" tool and a shim kit. I am pretty sure I have the rest of the required tools (Torque wrenches, sockets, hex and torx socket attachments, etc). I also have a 2 car garage that should provide ample working space for a few bikes. That being said, I have no problem taking a little ride either if someone with more know-how and possibly the tools would be in a more convenient location (ie. NOT Lubbock) and willing to help out. While I could pay the local dealer ~$400 to have it done, I am pretty sure that I (personally) won't be happy unless I SEE it myself. I know that there are some honest mechanics out there but... well... That is how I am. So, anyone interested in a valve check get together? Anyone have the tool & shim kit and willing to let me borrow/rent it? Anyone have the know how and willing to sacrifice a day or two to help me out? If I end up hosting, I can provide food, beverages (as expected, I am sure), ice cream and ????. I have been over Goose's write up and while I am no master mechanic, I am quite confident that I should be able to git-r-done... provided I can procure the proper tools. Thanks for your consideration. Happy riding!!
  24. Agreed, BUT you should still be able to take some good pictures with that camera. It has been a while since I have done any 'serious' photography, but I used to shoot pictures for a newspaper. In that couple of years I learned a great deal about cameras, lenses, film and their digital counterparts. In fact, in mid 2002 I was able to talk the newspaper I worked for into buying a Nikon D1H with 3 additional lenses. Total ranked in somewhere around $10k. Yee-haw. That was one heck of an amazing camera. I used it for just under 1 year and I took literally thousands of pictures with that beast. Even after all of that time and all of those photos passed, I could do a lot with that camera but I just started to scratch the surface as to what its capabilities really were. I guess the moral of the story here is that I wouldn't be so quick to 'judge' your camera as there could be a set of features or whatever that you have not stumbled onto. The delay on the digital camera is likely from the autofocus, light balance and a few of the other 'automatic' thing-a-ma-jigs that happen as you press the button. I know on the D1H you could adjust all of that stuff. Heck, even on my 'point and shoot' Olympus (that is 5 or 6 years old) I can adjust that kind of stuff. As far as 'dumbing your photos down' it sure does seem that the default settings on newer digital cameras have auto everything. If you decide to turn much of that jazz off you are almost certain to speed up the delay between the pressing of the 'shutter release' and actually snapping your photo. Best of luck to you!
  25. It is rather unlikely that I'll be able to make it this weekend but I'll give you a heads up if things change and I can. As for the recent adjustment day, I don't know how I missed that one...
