Shinko tire question
Squidley replied to bobcat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
No worries, it's hard to know how folks ride their bikes and the conditions that they are put through. Obviously my experience has been with Michigan for a majority of the miles I rode. I do understand that most folks get 2wice the wear from the front as opposed to the rear. Myself, on my bikes, is a lot of 2 up and loaded fairly heavy on trips. Good luck with the quest and when I get to that 10K mark on mine I'll come on a give a report on how they are holding up -
Were both in the same boat, we have 1st gens and H/D's I just acquired a '79 Electra Glide

Shinko tire question
Squidley replied to bobcat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'm with Nick on this one, I bought a set of Shinkos for my '89 and I'm very pleased with their performance so far. I want to mention something here, most tires I have ridden on, all the major brands, are shot by 15K and I mean SHOT. I personally have never gotten much more than 12K out of a tire, especially a rear one, on any mfgr. I personally change both tires out at the same time, I know some go 2 to 1 back to front, but I like the idea of having 2 new tires at the same time. I too understand the though of you get what you pay for. But like anything that has a brand name you are going to pay extra just for that name. I have been a diehard Avon Venom advocate, they have been excellent tires for me, but by 12K the rear needs to be changed for me and how I ride, which can be very spirited at times. If I can get 10K out of the Shinkos, have relatively the same performance and save half the money....I'll do that. Worst case if you buy a set of Shinkos is you'll spend the money for 2 that you would for one of any other major brand. I am running them for test purposes right now, but if they perform as I hope, I will continue to buy them as long as the price doesn't go crazy I will add that they did take a bit more weight to balance than some of the other tires I have used. But I have not had any adverse handling issues from having a bit of extra weight for the balance. -
I have her twin here in Houston Dave...good looking bike and glad to see you back on a Venture

Sorry Lowell, Had my eyes set on the prize and a little "Stone" that has been keeping me in a lot of pain. I'll make it up to you buddy....no really.

I'll second the Shinkos, I am really liking them on my '89. I have about 3500 miles on a new set front and rear and I am impressed with them. So much so I will put a set on my '79 Electra Glide when I get it here to Houston. The set on my VR cost me $119 shipped to my door from the place that Ndiaz posted.

Yeah I know, not quite the same impact as the moon shot...but were here Ole Gunboat decided to take the day off and he ended up meeting us on US 59 about 80 miles south of Nacogdoches. Pretty funny too, Lonna and I see this 2nd gen pass us going north on 59, we chatted to eachother on the CB's about seeing it. Lo and behold Lonna looks out her window not a minute later to see none other than Don himself on his '99 He lead us down into Houston and we just got back here to the house about an hour ago from supper. Life is good, were alive and now officially...."Damn Yankees"......now the fun begins. Talk with All Y'all soon (see, I'm already getting the vernacular down)

A quick update then off to bed.... We are in West Memphis Arkansas at a Howard Johnsons and I have to say that I would LOVE to kick the guy that designed the I 40/I 55 Cluster Beep right in the family jewels. This is one of the VERY WORST designed exit routes I have ever seen ....anywhoo, we are going to attempt to make it the rest of the way tomorrow, I'd really like this trip to be over with A big thank you to Kevin and Sue for meeting up with us in Angola and buying supper. Never enough time to chat, but it was great seeing you both. This morning was no different as we got to have breakfast with Dan and Rose in Indy. Never easy to say goodbye, but we left with smiles on our faces and happy for the opportunity to see our friends 1 more time. Life is good, ran all day through some wicked rain, glad I put the new wiperblades on after breakfast...would have sucked driving with the old ones Soon enough we'll be in the lonestar state and start looking for a new home. sad to leave our northern friends, but excited for a new opportunity...look out Texas....here we come

Here it is...less than 24 hours away, and the next chapter of Lonna and my life starts. Things are finally wrapped up with Amanda and Nancy, sold most Ron's tools and got the H/D in road condition so I can take Amanda on the last ride on her fathers bike. It's been one hell of a time and I'm still going 100 mph, but tomorrow at about 9am....it will all start to sink in. I will remember the last few weeks that I crammed as much time in with my family and friends. I will cherish those times as I dont know when we'll get back to see them. I am also excited, excited to be able to leave here and start a better life elsewhere. A place where there is family for Lonna and friends for us both, life is an adventure....and I will live it without compromise. I want to thank all the members for all the well wishes we have recieved, you folks mean a lot to us, more than I can spell out on an internet forum. So if you see an Burgundy '04 Buick Rainier pulling a red and black trailer and a Dark Blue '92 Chevy Wagon pulling an '89 VR Honk and wave...were friendly, we'll wave back Texas....here we come

Almost gone!

Jack, This can be an issue with some of them, the only fix I have found is to remove the brackets from the angle bracket they sit on. You have to make a gusset for that small bracket and weld it on, bolt it all back togetrher. As far as the valve cover gaskets, I thought you had your mechanic in Ft. Collins put a set on? If not the only way to keep them from leaking is replace them....thats a job. Have you swithched over to synthetic oil? if so that is most likely your culprit as older gaskets will tend to start to leak once synthetic is installed. -
Cool story, I am looking forward to getting a good ride in on the '79 Electra Glide I just got from my neighbor. It's never been about the brand to me, this actually is my 2nd Harley, the 1st one being an '86 1200 Sportster with an evo motor. Thats a beautiful stretch of road too, did hwy 1 on the left coast all the way up into Oregon. That was a VERY sweet trip

I would agree with the tounge weight, unless you weighed the tounge (and you might have) there's no real way of knowing. When I load any of my trailers I make sure that I lock everything in so it can't move around during transit. Perhaps this is what happened and you weren't aware of it Another thing, what was the tires on the trailer inflated to?

This is really too much Randy, you and Marcie have been through the ringer. Keeping good vibes for you folks and hoping all turns out well...all the best my friend.
-
Jim, We were wondering what happened to you, get yourself squared away, we'll be here when your ready to jump back into the bike....all the best to you

I was getting a bit thirsty

It's amazing how big those are, makes the tractor pulling it look small. I used to do onsite welding repairs for many different heavy machinery, rebuilt cat 992 loader buckets and portable shaker decks. I always loved doing that stuff.....hey I still do

I'd be all over that one, 'specially in Canada
