  1. In a pre-finished, parts every where sort of manner. Glad you making progress, I am going to be doing something similar with my 89 soon, though may not do the painting on this go-round. Looking forward to seeing the final produt. All the best, Norm
  2. This may get axed but I have to ask and if it is chopped I will certainly understand. Going back to my earlier comment on liberty and its basis on freedom as well as anyones ability to infringe on it, here is the question. IF you are ok today with being "singled out", stopped, questioned with the foundation being that it is for your safety, IF that is okay with you. Are you also willing to be OK with arbitrary searches of your home? Think about it. Same foundational principle, were talking safety here. If you have nothing to hide what can be the harm, and if we are able to round up a few bad guys during the process, hey all the better, it is a rousing success. Allow me to speculate that if you had been born and able to prophecy to your great grand parents half of the things that are actuality today back then, they most likely would have said you were stark raving mad. I say again, the water is getting warmer my friends. Am anxiously awaiting to hear responses to this question.
  3. Promised myself to just read and keep quiet however I have never been good at resisting temptation. I enjoyed reading all the posts and can see value in each side. The problem as I see it goes back over 235 years ago which I will address in a moment. First allow me to say that I as much as anyone can embrace 'safety', but if overdone even this pursuit can become stifling. I think we all can agree that there are only two certainties in life, 'death and taxes' and God bless America we truly have enough of the one. So in reality just how safe can we be? My biggest problem is when such endeavors conflict with our founding principles. Does anyone recall the final few words of our nations pledge? "With Liberty and Justice for All". Here is where this all gets interesting, for you see I did a tiny bit of research and as Webster puts it Liberty means 'the quality or state of being free', in fact when searching a couple of dictionary sites there was one central word utilized in defining Libery and that was "FREEDOM". I trust this concept does not need a long winded discertation (sp?) however with the current state of political intrusion we all suffer I feel confident in saying that we are deep in the throws of the boiling frog theory, the temperature of the water keeps rising. Bottom line for me, I more and more feel like William Wallace from BraveHeart.............F R E E D O M .... before we lose it all!
  4. Hey James, haven't confirmed the exact route yet however probably will go through Dahlonaga and to Turners Corner on the ride up. Not sure what time we will be pulling through there but would be glad to do whatever I can to hook up with you. If possible try and pm me and we can swap cell numbers and I can touch base with you say friday. ATB, Norm
  5. Appreciate the replies, and looking forward to a great ride this Saturday. For anyone interested, if you check out the blog I referenced you will also see the other dates we will be riding for the remainder of the year. I will reach out again prior to our next run. All the best ya'll, Norm
  6. Dear Fellow North Georgia riders, Though I was unable to participate in many of the local M&E, I did get to a few and certainly will miss Terry's leadership. One of the reasons I missed was involvement leading a group of riders myself. When I spoke with Terry after his announcement he encouraged me to consider doing both.... at the same time. So after some thought I would like to throw out an invitation. I head up a small group of riders we call COR (Community of Riders) that began out of my church. We ride once a month from March through October as well as our annual January 1st ride. Though we have 30 or 40 who I notify ride dates, we normally have 4 - 12 bikes show up. Our first ride of the year is this coming Saturday (March 19th) and we will be going from Roswell up to Blairsville for lunch and then back to Roswell. We will be meeting at the QT on the corner of Hwy 92 and Maybry Road. Hope to gather by 8:45 with KU at 9. We are a pretty diverse group that like those here simply enjoy the wind on our knees and fellowshipping with others who enjoy the same. Obviously not sure what to expect however the more the merrier and if need be we'll just add some mid pack ride leaders to help keep us together. If you would like to get a better feel for the group feel free to visit our blog at I will try and keep tabs here or you may PM me. All the best, Norm
  7. I feel your pain, where did my truck go? /Users/normspafard/Desktop/P1090003.JPG/Users/normspafard/Desktop/P1090001.JPG
  8. Certainly wasn't looking good with major storms predicted and LOTS of rain however had a couple of buddies meet me and we drove over to the WAffle House for brunch. Drove in on wet roads with a few sprinkles and one All Star Special later we left to steady showers, lol. But we did get the ride in and that is all that counts, as a matter of fact with conditions such as they were it can only get better the remainder of '11. All the best ventureriders, see you out on the open road. Norm
  9. I had an 85 but it needed a lot of work and though I didn't move all the way up to a 2nd I did have a 98 RSTD and it was a great bike. It and the 2nd Gens are certainly more roomy and though I have not ridden a 2nd gen it appears to have a very similar layout to the RSTD and when it comes to actual performance I can't beat the 1st gen. handles like a dream and smoother as well as more amenities. Sure wish Yamaha would wise up and get back in the game competing with the Wing and the Beemer. They can keep the 2nd as well as a 1st gen styled model however if they couldn't figure it out in the good times I doubt they can manage it today. So we just have to keep tending to and keeping up our experienced ones. Just me Norm
  10. 25 years ago this past September I began a fantastic journey on a career path I had no idea would work out so well. I began firefighting and ems work unsuspectingly however once it got in my blood it has totally taken over. I do have a life besides my career but LOVE every shift I pull and hope to go another 5 years. Thanks for your note. Norm
  11. Especially all who replied me. I just love it when a plan comes together and following about 30 minutes of following instructions and doing as told the air compressor is working wonderfully. Special thanks Don for the link, that was priceless! Now on to a half dozen other items on my todo list beginning with a small oil leak that Skydoc has me going in the right direction on. THis is an incredible site made up of awesome folks!!!! THanks ya'll, Norm
  12. Getting an E4 error message on my compressor and the manuel states that this indicates "The pressure sensor has no output voltage". Where do I look to correct this? Thanks, Norm
  13. Everyone has had varying success and failure with added cushions, recently I was introduced to the Aqua -Air Cushion. These were originally designed for medical situations like wheelchairs and such but have been used alot for bikers. I can tell you that these things are incredible, they are fully adjustable based an amount of water as well as air added. Any one else tried one of these? Don't have the link but you can google 'aqua-air cushion' and it should pop up. All the best, norm
  14. I concur that figuring out what type of riding you will primarily do is of highest importance. I owned an 85 VR for a while and though I liked it alot I decided to upgrade to a 98 RSTD. After some mods like Linby bars, a mustang seat as well as a bat wing fairing I pretty much had a Venture. The RS had lower CG as well as lower seat height, the ride was good and the bike was pretty much bullet proof. The one thing I realized after I picked up a V-Strom was that I was missing the performance and ergos of the VR. I have now gone back to an 89 VR and loving it. True being older there is a bit more maintenance but the better protection (wind and weather) as well as better feel in the twisty's is well worth it. I will say that I am about your size but a decade younger and with a 32 inch inseam I have added an Aqua-Air cushion to get my butt a tad higher and my legs a little less cramped. Once you figure out what you want in a bike you will certainly make the right choice on a specific bike. All the best, Norm
  15. And a mighty fine tent company to boot. Just purchased the Mountain Pass which is rated as a 3 person however i would never try more than 2 in it. This tent has great ventilation, rain fly to the ground, two doors with small vestibules on both doors. fairly compact for packing and just a great overall tent. Not sure if it is 4 season but definetly a 3.5'r. These are not the cheapest however as always you generally get what you pay for. If you check out their website make sure to check on both their A and B models. These are generally tents that have minor flaws but nothing tht effect function. All the best. Norm
  16. Have a lead on a set of driver floorboards off an 85 VR, does anyone know if these will fit an 89 VR? Thanks, Norm
  17. Am looking for a set of driver floor boards for an '89 VR. Am searching Craigslist and Ebay but find its always best to go to the SOURCE first. Thanks,
  18. Absolutely the coolest! Thanks for posting it.
  19. Don't have a link however I do have the article sitting in front of me as I type. It is in the October 2010 issue (and I got it in August) anyway, its on page 46 under Shop Talk and titled ; Dumb is as Dumb Does. Good read.
  20. I read Marks stuff regularly and have found him to be one of the most enjoyable writers in the biz. Always to the point, accurate, understandable and (the best part) fun to read. I did see that particular article and happen to agree, no clue what Harley was thinking (or not) when they made that decision however I believe thay really did shoot themselves in the foot so to speak and will regret that day in the future (near I hope). Though I have never owned or spent time on a Buell, I did look pretty close at the Ullyses and was impressed. I have always enjoyed Eric's take on building a motorcycle and hope he is able to get back at what he does best very soon.
  21. So far that is, even you Annie! And for the record if it ain't abnormal why simply be part of the regular herd? I did glance at the Cavelcade from Suzuki however am a little concerned since I don't seem to see any of these around and though I wish to be a little out of the mainstream I also don't wish to get into something I might have trouble working on down the road. Thanks a gain for all the input.
  22. OK, not looking to start anything but need to ask. Will be putting my RSTD up for sale soon I hope and then plan to replace her with a 1st gen VR. However, if I am not able to find exactly what i am looking for I am also a bit tempted to take a close look at the Kawi Voyager XII. They don't really look as sexy as the 1st gen however am hearing plenty of good stuff concerning their performance, reliability and economy. Anyone had any experience with these bikes? Would welcome some input. Will probably looking more at the early 90's to say 2000 year models if that helps. HAve also toyed with a wing but it just seems like everyone has to have a wing and additionally they tend to be much higher priced looking apples to apples with the competition. Kinda what drew me to the VR in the first place. Thanks abunch for the input.
  23. Since managing to lose the lid on the right bag I am on the hunt for a replacement. Though the bag itself is fine I figure the best way to search this is to see if anyone has a right side plastic molded saddlebag for a '98 RSTD. Am searching other sites however always start with the best. Thanks, Norm
  24. Am going to once again retrace my path from yesterday. Will give Pinwall a try as well as try to find other bike junk yards. Norm
  25. Ok, so I'm in a hurry to meet my buddies for a little ride tonight. I bug out go about 5 miles to meet at the gas station then we head out, tonight I am sweep. 4 more miles down the road I glance back and I am missing the side bag cover on the right side!!! I always check to be sure these things are latched down, well almost always. So I am no in search of a lid for my side bag on a '98 Royal Star Tour Deluxe. They are solid molded plastic. If anyone has an extra one for the right side (they are different) or know where else I can look ( I am heading to ebay next) give me a shout. Like Forest always says, "Stupid is as stupid does" or something like that. Bone head in Georgia.
