  1. I'm still riding with my Bell helmet and the liner isn't removable so, given I sweat at a stoplight, the old brain bucket is getting bit pungent. Tried some carpet deodorant and some baking soda, neither helped much. Anybody found a product that works for this?
  2. I've cleaned the outside of the location where the drive shaft housing and the final drive are bolted together several times. It gets a good dirty/greasy film on the outside. No drips and no apparent seapage from there at all so am wondering where that might be coming from? Any suggestions?
  3. I find that my full face Bell works fine in the winter but get's awfully hot in the summer time. Anyone have either of these HJC helmets. Bike Bandit has the FS-3 on clearance sale, I really like the idea of running either a visor or a shield. That being said, I'm wanting to install a J&M headset in whatever I get with little to no cutting on anything on the inside. Also, how is the noise? Also might look at a Nolan N42/N43. Same kinds of questions.
  4. Ditto Silver's prayer. Let us know how she is doing.
  5. You'll recover fairly quickly. In the meantime, it might feel pretty crappy. I had my left knee scoped for meniscus and some cartliage on a Thursday morning in June of this year. Went for a walk on it Thursday afternoon. Got up Friday morning, felt great, got cleaned up and dressed to go to work. In the span of about 10 minutes it starting feeling like I'd shot it with a shotgun, wondered if I had done something to it. Was in pain the rest of Friday. Called the doc and he said that he shot it with local anisthetic at the end of the surgery which usually lasted 12-18 hours and that apparently it had worn off suddenly. Was in some pain still most of the day saturday but by saturday night it started feeling better. By Sunday I was getting around pretty good with a single crutch. Went to work on Monday with a pretty good limp but not much pain. Overall the pain kind of lasted about 5 weeks. Now, better but know that a replacement is in the future sometime. Trying to lose some weight to delay it as long as possible.
  6. I would agree with Earl's comments. I've managed several design and build several sites and "microsites" for large Fortune 100 companies. In general, too much text, not enough color and graphics. People will go to specific pages that contain more text if they know and want to read longer descriptions. Just trying to help. Mitch
  7. Folks, I'm in New Orleans downtown this evening. Looking for a family friendly local-flavor jazz restaurant that is reasonably priced. Any New Orleans folks on here who could guide us to a good local spot? We have a car so can drive somewhere here too. Thanks
  8. We, as a society, are quickly losing the sense of right and wrong, of putting others first, ourselves last. We have adopted the morals and sense of animals in far too many ways. This event today is a worst case example. I see other examples every day, people walking down the middle of the street lanes in the parking lot without even caring they are holding others up. Nobody holds the door open for others anymore. When you do hold a door for others, no thank you, just a look of entitlement from them. We have gone from "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country (and other members of that society)" into just the opposite. "It is all about me, not about you". It sincerely makes me sad, and occasionally (as in the situation today), angry. Here is a poem written about the direction of the devolving nature of our post-modern culture... Creed by Steve Turner We believe in Marxfreudanddarwin We believe everything is OK as long as you don't hurt anyone to the best of your definition of hurt, and to the best of your knowledge. We believe in sex before, during, and after marriage. We believe in the therapy of sin. We believe that adultery is fun. We believe that sodomy’s OK. We believe that taboos are taboo. We believe that everything's getting better despite evidence to the contrary. The evidence must be investigated And you can prove anything with evidence. We believe there's something in horoscopes UFO's and bent spoons. Jesus was a good man just like Buddha, Mohammed, and ourselves. He was a good moral teacher though we think His good morals were bad. We believe that all religions are basically the same- at least the one that we read about was. They all believe in love and goodness. They only differ on matters of creation, sin, heaven, hell, God, and salvation. We believe that after death comes the Nothing Because when you ask the dead what happens they say nothing. If death is not the end, if the dead have lied, then its compulsory heaven for all excepting perhaps Hitler, Stalin, and Genghis Kahn We believe in Masters and Johnson What's selected is average. What's average is normal. What's normal is good. We believe in total disarmament. We believe there are direct links between warfare and bloodshed. Americans should beat their guns into tractors . And the Enemies would be sure to follow. We believe that man is essentially good. It's only his behavior that lets him down. This is the fault of society. Society is the fault of conditions. Conditions are the fault of society. We believe that each man must find the truth that is right for him. Reality will adapt accordingly. The universe will readjust. History will alter. We believe that there is no absolute truth excepting the truth that there is no absolute truth. We believe in the rejection of creeds, And the flowering of individual thought. If Chance be the Father of all flesh, disaster is his rainbow in the sky and when you hear State of Emergency! Sniper Kills Ten! Troops on Rampage! Youths go Looting! Bomb Blasts School! It is but the sound of man worshipping his maker.
  9. Thanks guys. I've got some hi-performance Champion chain "wax" left over from my first ride that I'll try first. Then the lithium since I've got some of it too. Finally, I'll try the synt because it will require a purchase. Thanks for the feedback.
  10. It's great that you were as prepared...saved you from a lot more pain for certain. You always imagine in your head that in an accident, you will do this or that, but reality comes much more quickly than you have time to think. I had a wreck on my bicycle earlier this summer while not wearing any protective gear and had injuries very similar to yours. Take that and add the speed of the motorcycle and these things happen so quickly the only thing you have time and presence of mind to do is to utter your favorite swear word as you are going down and to wonder how badly it is going to hurt and hope the gear is padded in the right spots. Our neighbor and good friend is a nurse and (I'm sure you've all heard this before) she says the medical profession calls them "donorcycles". She also said that national organ donation month is in April specifically because of motorcyclists getting out on the roads in the spring, not prepared, and the roads having a lot of winter sand/salt still on them and the resulting fatal accidents. Best piece of advice I received when I started riding again, many years removed from riding as a teenager out on the farm, jumping terraces and having fun, was when you ride out on the street, to remember 3 things: 1) You are invisible 2) You are made of glass when you are on the bike (this is where the gear helps!) 3) Everyone is trying to kill you. Best wishes and heal quickly!
  11. yep...I guess that's kind of a "duh" on my part. I can calculate the correlation coefficient between multiple indenpendent and dependent variables in order to maximize revenue and/or profit but subtracting 03 from 08 just didn't yield 5 years in my little pea brain Man, when you are over the hill, time picks up speed doesn't it? 03 was just a couple of years ago, wasn't it?
  12. Hey guys...the Gen 2 I just bought is a 03 with about 57K on it. Is it covered under a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty? If so, I'm stopping by the local dealership on the way home tonight.
  13. I've noticed that my front brake lever kind of "catches" as you pull on it, not a smooth pull. Seems to be due to it rubbing on the actuator/plunger in the master cylinder and not having lubrication there. It appears that there is a slight depression or cupping in the actuator where the lever makes contact. I sprayed some dry lube on it and it smoothed out for a couple of days but is back to catching in increments again. Is this normal and what do you guys use to lubricate that contact point?
  14. Up until this year, 45 was pretty much the limit on my pain threshold but got some nice insulated roadgear riding pants and a Nitro insulated riding coat this summer. Just sold my Honda ST1100 and bought an RSV and rode it to work wearing the new gear last week, 34 F at my house when I left. Got to work and I was sweating in that gear. I'm guessing I could ride down to 10-15 comfortably now. I'm going to at least try it this winter assuming the roads are clear and free.
  15. Not much color here in eastern Kansas this year. Funny too cause it seemed to be a perfect summer (from what I've heard in the past) for trees to develop the sugars needed, cool summer, plenty of rain. Just rode to the little town of Baldwin, Ks. today for the "Maple Leaf Festival". The town and surrounding area filled with sugar maples, normally brilliant, this year just starting to turn brown. Oh well, beautiful day for a ride with my wife anyway, clear sunny sky, about 55 on the way out, 65 on the way back.
  16. Thanks all! It seems like a great bunch willing to help out a newbie. I'm sure I'll be asking a few other interesting questions over the next few months but I believe in what my signature says!
  17. Just want to make sure I understand. Obviously, mine is bone stock so I don't have a tach to know where my RPM's are sitting. What I'm hearing you guys say is that it sounds like mine is pretty normal. I've been shifting into 2nd at around 25mph, 3rd around 45mph, 4th around 60 and 5th when I level out anywhere above 65. So you are saying that at 80mph in 5th is still two low on RPM's to roll on the power very hard? That's fine, just getting used to the beast and make sure I don't have a serious issue.
  18. I've used both Seafoam and the other stabilizer product for a number of years, primarily when winterizing my boat. I had better luck keeping water out with Seafoam. When using the other product, always had to put a can of HEET in the first tank of the year or the boat wouldn't run under load, coughed, sputtered died, etc. When using Seafoam, never had the problem. I bought my first bike after I sold the boat so have always used Seafoam in them.
  19. FYI, I stopped in at my local Advance Auto Parts today to get some seafoam and other stuff, picked up the purolater for $5.88 and they have a $2 mail-in rebate for all of the Purolater Pure One filters so $3.88 is a pretty good price for a quality filter.
  20. That would be a pleasant surprise. I'll take a quick look at that before I go out next ride. My luck it would fall off a bridge into a river somewhere and cost $2000 to get a new one.
  21. I took it for about a 300 mile trip over the weekend. The trip out was 2-lane 65mph with short stops/traffic lights in small towns every 10-15 miles, return trip 100% interstate, set the cruise doing about 82mph indicated. Very comfortable and enjoyable ride. Got 34mpg for the trip, seems kind of low to me compared to my old ride (an ST1100 that I could get 45+mpg with 2 up, fully loaded side bags), but nowhere near as comfortabel of a ride. I had posted an earlier thread about vibration at roll-on and while the engine is smoother at higher revs, it still feel it feels mostly like there is a "miss" or "roughness" there, just at a higher RPM so not quite as noticeable. Seems to have plenty of power so am doubting that it is actually missing, but even at 80MPH indicated, you still get some vibration when pulling power or load in OD. The PO said he had synced the carbs but I probably will want to double check that. I probably should have driven another one or two before I finalized the deal on this one just to make sure I understood the characteristics of the motor and to make sure it is acting like it should. I poured some seafoam in it this evening and when it stops raining in a couple of days I'll ride her a bit. I will also start looking around on it a bit, check the spark plugs (which the PO said he changed as well), etc. Before I get in too deep on looking at it I suppose I should get someone's thought as to whether or not there really is a problem or just the nature of the beast and I shouldn't be concerned. If anyone is in the Kansas City area has one of these engines and would have a few minutes this coming weekend to take a look/listen and see if it is the just the normal operating characteristics and I need not be concerned, I would sure appreciate it. Assuming the weather is reasonable, I could probably meet someone just about anywhere in the Kansas City-Lawrence area. Thanks guys.
  22. Hey RSTDdog, thanks for the suggestions. I took it for about a 300 mile trip over the weekend. The trip out was 2-lane 65mph with short stops/traffic lights in small towns every 10-15 miles, return trip 100% interstate, doing about 82mph indicated. The PO said he synced the carbs but I'm not sure about it. Got 34mpg for the trip, seems kind of low to me (again used to 45+mpg on the ST with two up and fully loaded bags) While the engine is smoother at higher revs, it still feel it feels mostly like the "miss" or "roughness" is just at a higher RPM so not quite as noticeable. Seems to have plenty of power so am doubting that it is actually missing, but even at 80MPH indicated, you still get some vibration when pulling power or load in OD. I probably should have driven another one or two before I finalized the deal on this one just to make sure I understood the characteristics of the motor, mostly just to make sure it is acting like it should. I'm going to throw some seafoam in it this week and just start looking around on it a bit, check the spark plugs (which the PO said he changed as well), etc. If anyone is in the KC area has one and would have a few minutes this coming weekend to take a look/listen and see if it is the just the nature of the beast and I need not be concerned, I would sure appreciate it. Assuming the weather is reasonable, I could probably meet someone just about anywhere in the KC-Lawrence area. Oh, by the way, I have the shock squeak and the tranny whine. But frankly, it really doesn't bother me at all.
  23. Rode her again last night and into work this morning first time since the weekend (been raining here). Got the rev's up and all is much better. Still not as smooth as my old ST1100 but I don't know that any bike has an engine that smooth. The RSV is a nice bike and you guys are right, she's pretty quick. Other surprising thing is how quickly it handles. It seems that the RSV is quicker on steering manuevers at highway speeds than the ST1100 even though it was a sport touring bike. Already started looking for farkles but after going down today or tomorrow to pay sales tax, property tax, and registration fees, I'm thinking next spring before the first farkle gets attached. Thanks guys, look forward to visiting with you all through the forums.
  24. Yep...I'm talking much lower RPM that you guys, like 50 or so in 5th. I think I was driving it more like a vtwin. I'll give it the higher rev treatments and let you know. Thanks, Mitch
  25. Guys, Just got an 03 RSV this weekend. Coming off of an ST1100. I know the RSV is supposed to be smoother than a Vtwin but I've never been on a vtwin, but comparing to the V4 on the ST1100, the RSV has a lot (compared to the St1100) of vibration when you roll-on the power hard. Is this normal? The PO told me he has done all of mods on this site, synced carbs, replaced all fluids, new tires and brakes. Thanks, and I look forward to exploring this site and all of wisdom that has been shared.
