  1. Rosebud, This is from the Marine Corps Assc. web site pertaining to ordering back issues. I am not a member, or I would gladly help. https://www.mca-marines.org Are back issues available? How do I order them? Yes, back issues are available. If you are a new member or renewing, you may request your term to start with a prior month if issues are available. If you are looking for a Leatherneck or Marine Corps Gazette from up to 10 years ago, you may purchase them for $5.95 each by calling 1-888-237-7683. Covers only are also available for $2.00 each. We have most issues from the past 10 years.
  2. Would we be helping the overall site by clicking on the ad in the upper right of screen. Put another way, does this site get paid by the number of clicks on these ads?? I have no problem hitting these a couple of times a day if it helps out.
  3. I did not mean to imply that condensers are obsolete. There are in fact, many in the TCI unit as well as the flasher relays (83's) The original poster made a reference in a later post to condensers on point systems, I was stating that that is not the purpose of the condenser in question.
  4. Has nothing to do with points, that was a different era of use for condensers. It smooths out the spikes in voltage caused by various things such as a relay operating, coils operating etc.
  5. The condenser (fancy name for capacitor) is positioned across the positive and negative side of the battery. Its purpose is to reduce radio noise. Does not affect running in any way.
  6. HOW PUMPKIN PIES ARE MADE Keep this in mind as you prepare for the holidays. http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/pumpkinpies.jpg
  7. Somebody is going for the Thank You Title.
  8. If the EAND valves are interchangeable with the standard ones on my 83, I would be very interested in changing these. A problem I have with the 83-85 system is that with the split brake system, if you only apply either the front or the rear brake then the anti dive is only activated on the one side thus causing the forks to operate different from each other. This is due to the anti dives being hydraulically operated on the 83 to 85 models and the right and left valves are not tied in any way. The 86-93 ones could be activated by adding a relay to the brake light system to control them, which is the same method of control as the 86-93 versions.
  9. How loud are these? Harley type or more reasonable? Im assuming no baffling. What material did you use, S.S. or galvanized. Gary
  10. From your statement shown at the bottom of this post, your concern is that when you rev the engine from idle, you see the bulbs increase in brightness. If this assumption is correct, then read on. At idle your generator & rectifier combination is not putting out at their maximum potential. As you increase the RPM's the generator armature spins faster inside of the field coil of the stator, thus generating more current. This increase in current causes the voltage level of the system to rise to a level where the regulator then clamps the rising voltage to prevent damage to components. This maximum voltage is in the range of 14.5 volts. At idle the generator & rectifier are lucky to be putting out enough to sustain the load on the battery. This increase in voltage, which is about 1 1/2 to 2 volts is about a 15% overall increase. As the system voltage increases, so does the current flow through the bulbs. This is enough to see the variation in output from the lights. Looking at the chart below, which is cut out of the service manual, you will see that maximum output is around 4000 RPM's. http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/rectifieroutput1986-1993-YamahaVent.jpg
  11. Sorry Oz, I revised caption on first picture to indicate it was of the case, not cover as I originally said.
  12. Pictures of area in question below. 13. Actually, mine was very supportive. Even after some early wrecks. Picture below is of his race triumph on the right. Trailer behind was his also. Other two bikes are friends. This was taken in 1949 prior to race at Daytona, which he led for a while. http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/BeforeDaytona1949.jpg
  14. I need a few parts for my cruise addition project. I am adding a 1988 cruise control to my 1983 plain jane I need the bracket that mounts to the triple tree that the cruise light pod screws to. Also the rubber grommet that goes around the ignition switch. They are items #13 & 14 on attached PDF of parts listing. Anything from 1986 thru 1993 should work. Also I need a set of throttle cables from a bike that had cruise (83-93). I have the pulley box that connects the upper and lower cables. I didn't realize cables were different until I got the bike stripped down yesterday. Will the cables from a second gen work for what I need? I see several sets of these on Ebay for very little. They look very similar in pictures. Also could use a 1983 TCI unit. A clutch side foam grip would also be nice. I got the throttle side one with the right hand electrical control. Also, I bought a rear shock with a spring. The one I bought is from a 1987. I did not get the air line that goes into the right top of the shock. The one on my 83 that only has the air bag goes into the left side of the shock and is too short. Or, if anyone can tell me what the threads are going into the shock, maybe I can get an adapter. I have an extra fork tube air set with shrader valve. I might be able to couple to existing line with one of the air lines from this if I knew thread size. If you have any of these PM or email me price with shipping. Thanks Gary

    How long

Started riding go-carts when I was 5. Dad, brother and I each had one eventually. We had a 1/4 mile dirt track in back end of 3 acre country home. Picture is of one we had which was rather crude, hand throttle, small engine. My Dad was a pro dirt track rider in 40 & 50's. Sponsored by Triumph. He raced at tracks in eastern US including Daytona Beach. Some pictures in on my profile page. I started mini bikes at about 10 years old. Made By Rupp. First street bike was Honda 350. Then several Honda 750's after that. http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/1stgocart_1-1959.jpg

  18. Hoover Dam Bypass . . A little construction project in Las Vegas ' backyard. THE WIDER VIEW: Taking shape, the new bridge at the Hoover Dam Creeping closer inch by inch, 900 feet above the mighty Colorado River , the two sides of a $160 million bridge at the Hoover Dam slowly take shape. The bridge will carry a new section of US Route 93 past the bottleneck of the old road which can be seen twisting and winding around and across the dam itself. When complete, it will provide a new link between the states of Nevada and Arizona . In an incredible feat of engineering, the road will be supported on the two massive concrete arches which jut out of the rock face. The arches are made up of 53 individual sections each 24 feet long which have been cast on-site and are being lifted into place using an improvised high-wire crane strung between temporary steel pylons. The arches will eventually measure more than 1,000 feet across. At the moment, the structure looks like a traditional suspension bridge. But once the arches are complete, the suspending cables on each side will be removed. Extra vertical columns will then be installed on the arches to carry the road. The bridge has become known as the Hoover Dam bypass, although it is officially called the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, after a former governor of Nevada and an American Football player from Arizona who joined the US Army and was killed in Afghanistan . Work on the bridge started in 2005 and should finish next year. An estimated 17,000 cars and trucks will cross it every day. The dam was started in 1931 and used enough concrete to build a road from New York to San Francisco . The stretch of water it created, Lake Mead , is 110 miles long and took six years to fill. The original road was opened at the same time as the famous dam in 1936. An extra note: The top of the white band of rock in Lake Mead is the old waterline prior to the drought and development in the Las Vegas area. It is over 100 feet above the current water level. http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/hoover1s.jpg http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/hoover2s.jpg http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/hoover3s.jpg http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/hoover4s.jpg http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/hoover5s.jpg http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/hoover6s.jpg http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/hoover7s.jpg
  19. Gosh, I'm not even to a post slut yet.
  20. Will 2nd gen gaskets work on an 83 VR? I know the 83 model year had some differences from the later years. Gary
  21. Jack, Here are some photos of gear position indicator switch The switch is a path to ground that is made via the shift cam drum rotating a contact point as each gear is selected. Pink wire on switch is for 2nd gear per schematic. http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/shiftswfront.jpg Contact side of switch. 23. I am in the process of installing cruise control on my 1983 Venture Standard. I have purchased almost all of the items I need to do this upgrade from ebay. Prior to installing the parts, I will be disassembling the ones that I can and cleaning them. I have made the following write up of the process of cleaning the front and rear brake switches and the clutch switch that came off of a 1988 Venture. The pictures show the switch completely removed from the bike. The switches detailed are from a Venture with cruise control, switches from non cruise control equipped bikes are different. These switches may be very similar to 1983-1985 Ventures. If you are unable to open the PDF file, PM me with your email address and I will send it to you. I have detailed the throttle side switch and the turn signal switch in other threads. 38049.pdf
