  1. Dear Sir, I write this note to you to tell you of me plight and at the time of writing, I am not a pretty sight; me body is all black and blue, me face a deathly gray and I write this note to say why Renne's not at work today. While working on the fourteenth floor some bricks I had to clear; now, to throw them down from such a height was not a good idea. The foreman wasn't very pleased, he being an awkward sod he said I'd have to cart them down the ladders in me hod. Now, clearing all these bricks by hand it was so very slow, so I hoisted up a barrel and secured the rope below. But in me haste to do the job I was to blind to see that a barrel full of building bricks was heavier than me. So when I untied the rope the barrel fell like lead and clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead. Well, I shot up like a rocket till to my dismay I found that halfway up I met the bloody barrel coming down. Well, the barrel broke me shoulder as to the ground it sped, and when I reached the top I banged the pully with my head. Well, I clung on tight through numbed shock from this almighty blow and the barrel spilled out half the bricks fourteen floors below. Now, when these bricks had fallen from the barrel to the floor I then outweighed the barrel and so started down once more; still clinging tightly to the rope, I sped towards the ground, and I landed on the broken bricks that were all scattered round. Well, I lay there groaning on the ground, I thought I'd passed the worst, when the barrel hit the pully-wheel and then the bottom burst. Well, a shower of bricks rained down on me, I hadn't got a hope as I lay there moaning on the ground, I let go of the bloody rope. The barrel than being heavier, it started down once more, and landed right across me, as I lay upon the floor. Well, it broke three ribs and my left arm and I can only say that I hope you'll understand why Renne's not a work today.
  2. 5.8 ft lbs according to service manual page 4-47 Gary
  3. What did you use for heating elements & how do you regulate temperature? Gary
  4. I should have clarified this, I am interested in the helical spring kit. There are 6 springs in this design. I don't believe it would be possible to double up on the helicals. The 83 - 85's use helical springs, not the flat springs used in 86 & up. Along the same lines, is there any advantage to using the flat spring design in place of the helical style? I see kits for going to the helical spring but haven't seen one for going to the flat design from the helical. I am going to have both style clutches available. Gary
  5. I drilled two 1/2" air holes in my air cover and it caused the bike to 'stumble' at mid range RPM's. Duct taped holes shut and performance returned. I have K&N filter in bike. Exhaust pipes have rear tail removed and two 3/4" holes in last baffle. This is on 83 - 1200 So my suggestion is to leave air intake system alone unless you want to get into rejetting carbs. Gary
  6. That's actually the temperature of comfortable bath water. Gary
  7. I have one of the boost sensor lines in my hand. The plastic restrictor is a straight through opening. No baffles or valving that I can see. Flow seems to be the same through it in both directions by blowing into either end. The shorter, larger diameter hose goes to the carb intake boot. Gary
  8. What are the advantages of Barnett clutch springs over stock springs? Are the Barnett springs stiffer? Gary
  9. Below are a couple of links to lubrication related pages. First one deals specifically with motorcycle drive shafts. 2nd one is more general, but it does define the Lithium soap base grease. http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Shaft.html http://www.reliabilityweb.com/art04/understanding_grease.htm Gary
  10. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1057&highlight=swing+grease+zerks Here is link to installing grease zerks Just did this to mine. I put 6 fittings in, instead of 5. Where the arm is marked 'A' in the tech write up, I put a fitting in each end. Gary
  11. Gosh, the same photo is on line showing it is in India and it is an AP photo http://iplextra.indiatimes.com/photo/0h0S71y28y1a7 Could it be the one license plate in the photo is a tourist. 12. Does the cover over the mixture screw have to be replaced? Gary
  13. Pictures are on the way to your email account. Progressive dis-assembly of 1983 1200 carbs. About 30 pictures. I reduced size to make them easier to email. Gary
  14. I could make a suggestion that would help, especially in traffic. You have an 87, I believe which has electric anti dive units. They are energy hogs. When you are setting in traffic with a brake on these anti dives are engaged. If you pull the relay out of the socket it will disengage the anti dive units. The bike will then handle a little differently, so this is going to be a personal decision. The anti dives help keep the forks from bottoming out on hard deceleration/braking. It will require you pulling the headlight out. What I am suggesting is you pull the relay out of the base and put it in your trunk for future use. If you have anything to wrap the base that the relay was in I would do that, such as electrical tape, a sandwich bag, whatever. This is just to keep anything from shorting out if it comes into contact with base. This is unlikely since base has female connectors in it. The relay you are looking for has 1 brown, 2 yellow(in one slot), 1 black and 1 white wire going into base. Base is black, relay is gold colored. On a stock bike relay is to the top of the headlight opening in a black rubber retainer. To make sure you have correct relay, turn key to run position and depress brake lever. Relay will click. Since you are deep in Mexico and probably limited dealers or technical help available, you might consider this. If you do this, practice a little with the braking when you first start out. It is not a radical difference, but it will be different. Gary
  15. Any other suggestions were I could post it that would work out better? Gary
  16. Below is a link to a site were I put a copy of the 1983-1985 Service manual. This copy of the manual has the pages in it that are missing from many of the other online 83 service manuals. I rearranged PDF to put supplementary chapters to rear of manual, Layout of manual now makes more sense. 1/25/2010 I also put in the back a copy of the wiring diagrams I did for the 83-85's. About 45 meg in size. User ID and password below. username=venturerider, password=venturerider Click on blue heading at top of window below to download. 18. I've got a mighty vac system that looks like the number that Ed Teixeira posted. I was confused by the hanger on the larger unit you showed. And the smaller bottle looked like it had an air port on the top. Gary
  19. How do you operate this? I am the village idiot. Gary
  20. That would be a good reason. When you do that, try not to pull it out of U-joint in front. That is, unless you want to lube the u-joint end. I don't know what the recommendations are on this. It is just a PITA to get back in u-joint. Gary
  21. [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3384]First Gen Service Manuals - VentureRider.Org[/ame] Thread above will take you to a download for the service manual for your bike. You want the one labeled "First Gen Manual". Go to section 6 page 55 for instructions for shaft drive Short answer to your question is Yes you have to remove wheel and final drive to get at drive shaft. Why do you want to remove it though? Gary
  22. What kind of venture do you have. It helps if this is added to your profile so it is obvious. User CP.. Edit Your Details .. Custom User Title. Looking at your profile page, it says you have a VTX . Gary After I post this I see it is in 2nd gen forum, Kinda narrows it down I guess, Sorry.

    G1 dash

He has several other items listed as '83' One of which is a CLASS control. The other is a right hand switch with cruise on it. There were not many 83's made with these options. When I did the schematic redraws I was told that 83's had these upgrades and the 'enhanced' dash he has listed. This is though a rare one. Gary
  24. What year 1300? (86 - up) What year 1200? (83-85) The 1983 were quite different from the 84-85 electrically. Gary
  25. Here are the individual pages that are missing from the 83-85 service manual. I will combine them into one complete manual, but I need to talk to Freebird about where he wants to put it. The complete manual is quite large (44.5 meg) Thanks to Snaggletooth for scanning these. Gary
