  1. By what you describe, it sounds as it the squelsch is stuck wide open or completely counter clock wise? Why..I don't knowl. Today in my 89, when I hit the PTT button, the 'TX' symbol came on, but nobody could hear me. They could hear that I keyed the mike...but no sound. I screwed around with this for 25 miles, before finally changind CB channels up and down. Went back to the original channel and everything worked perfectly. I don't know what I did, but perhaps it will work for you also. I think in these older bikes there are a lot of iffy connections etc. Good luck.
  2. Condor, The speaker unit I used was very similar to this 21-1834 at Radio Shack. I bought mine (at Radio Shack) years ago to use with an old CB radio I installed on an old Goldwing. However, it was just a clip-on external speaker...clip on to your shoulder so you could hear. I took this and cut it down and used velcro to secure in the helmet ear cavity. It works great....but it is not listed at Radio Shack any longer. My old riding buddy still has another one, so I am going to get it from him to use in either the passenger helmet, or give myself a stereo system in mine. Hope this helps.
  3. Uh Greg...I think you have a problem! "Fuel capacity is 19-20 litres, that's 3 1/2 UK gallons or 4.3 US gallons." 20L coverts to 4.4 Imp Gal or 5.3 US gallons. Hope you just had a typo?
  4. IS THAT A WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING?
  5. I had an old speaker that I had installed in my helmet when I had a goldwing. It plugged right into the yamaha headset wiring.....and worked great. Took a spin for 160 km today and had pretty good sound from music, and from the CB. Now, I just gotta get another such speaker, or find two other matched ones. By the way Rocket, are you heading for the Olds Ride for Sight in June? I plan on being there, meeting up with some riders from Grande Prairie and do a little visiting. Would like to meet you.
  6. Not sure what my problem is, but I really can't hear much from the headsets on the highway...stereo or CB. I hear something but is usually so garbled I can't tell. I am better off to use the built in speakers on the dash to hear anything. Is this because of the headsets or what? I just bought the bike recently, and it doesn't matter what set I use the results are the same. By the way, I can hear music/CB when just sitting or even when bike is idling, but it seems to real tinny. Would it be worth my while to wire in a new pair of earphones from say a radio or tapeplayer or such? Thanks.
  7. With my 89 I get 39 Canadian miles per gallon. However, I think there is room for improvement because it seems to miss a lot off one particular cylinder when idling. I am not aware of it at highway speeds....but assume it is there. Have changed plugs, wires, and removed the diaphram on that carb but see no problems. Am thinking of exchanging the two rear coils to see if problem shifts to a different cylinder. I guess it could be TCI (going to have to find out how to check it) or take the carbs off and get them cleaned etc.

    First Ride

I finally got to take my new to me scoot out today. I have been doing a lot of work to it since I got it home. It was only 6C today (I think that's about 48F) but I really enjoyed the 25 miles I got on. Most everything worked well! Problems with the cruise control..got it to work once and then it quit. I believe the problem is in the clutch lever switch. I did get the cruise to work momentarily and set it about 35 mph and let go of the handlebars. MAN DID I GRAB THEM FAST! This bike has the dreaded steering head shake at the lower speeds and it gets hairy really fast. I had a 96 Royal Star that barely had it and you could let it go quite awhile, but not this bike. With my hands on the bars I did not notice anything else. Couldn't let go at higher speeds...and after a bit of slower miles took it briefly up to about 75 mph. No problelms. Bike is really nice, and rider is quite protected. Hopefully with a new front tire, and some steering head tightning things will get better. Question. If the low speed steering head shake is evident, will there also be a high speed one? Will it be at some muliple of the original speed? Probably a dumb question but I gotta know! Thanks.
  9. This light flashes on my 89 because the kickstand is down. It is the icon directly below the red warning light.
  10. Thanks Neil86. IT WORKED! I would never had thought to try that. This web site is amazing.
  11. I just finished putting my 89 Venture back together after replacing plug wires, battery cables, fixing E4 error in class, refreshed desicant, and replaced back brakes and pistons seals; oh and back behind headlight to see how to replace bulb. I have had a lot of the bike apart, and every connector that I could reach I took apart, cleaned and put some dielectric grease in. However, upon starting up, I thought I noticed a little lag till the headlight/dash lights came on. After running the bike for about 10 min they suddenly went out. I have signal lights, clock etc but no headlight (low or high), no headlight indicator, and no dash lights. So my question is, what/where is the likely culprit connector? I must not have put one back together securely? How about behind the headlight? Oh well, project for tomorrow I guess.
  12. My new plug wires arrived today...nice and yellow! However, my old plug wires have at least 1 to 3 layers of protective corraggated(sp?) plastic over them. Similar to trailer or truck wiring. It is usually split lengthwise, but this is not. Is this necessary or even original? If I use this again, there was no use in ordering yellow wires because they will all be covered up. Hope somebody replies soon so I can get back to installing wires LOL. Thanks.
  13. Thanks to everyone. All posts are useful because there are different views and ways of doing things. I usually read them all, look at my situation/needs etc and then try to apply all the knowledge to MY problem. Again thanks. Pistons are back in, rear reservoir removed and cleaned, and new brake pads installed. My daughter and I bled the brakes tonight, and I will do it again tomorrow night. I have ordered master cylinders kits for rear, front and clutch and will install at some later date. Time to start putting it back together...just waiting for the plug wires to show. Probably will sync carbs before putting all the lowers etc back on. One good thing about all this, I know how things come apart and go back together! It will be much easier next time or if one has to do something drastic while on a trip.
  14. It used to cost a few dollars...don't know if this was a highway fee or park fee. If you are planning to do it and return to Canada right away then get some US funds ahead of time. Its a great ride.
  15. Thanks for the replies guys. Condor....I don't know where my brain was! What a great idea. I knew my seals are coming in tomorrow, and all pistons had to come out, so I proceeded. If I would have waited it sure would have made life easier. Oh well, live and learn. So can I remove the rear master cylinder without a replacement kit? Will seals etc in there go back in or am I wasting my time? If I am going to wind up with a brake system that is iffy then I would rather order the correct parts and do it right the first time. Thanks.
  16. I finally got them out. I am sure somebody probably told me but honestly I don't remember.....only one side of two pistons can come out at a time! Silly me I thought it I matched them exactly in the middle, they all four would come out. This is how I did it for those of you who have never seen a caliper before. I had two pistons that moved more freely than the other two so I blocked and clamped them so they could not move. Using air I managed to blow the other two out. I then tried to get the pistons I had just removed back in to then work the other two, but I could not get them to go in. (Note to self....get help here when it comes time to put the pistons back in after the new seals arrive! There has to be a trick or method!) Anyway, after getting the first two out, I put two pieces of thin plywood over the exposed piston holes and clamped them there. This wood blocked the air that was flowing freely out the exposed holes and also provided a soft contact surface when the other pistons exited. Then, using quite a bit more air volume, I managed to move the other two pistons out. Waiting for seal kit to arrive monday so I can put things back together. Question. Now that it is all apart, is it wise to remove the rear reservoir etc and clean/flush it out with new brake fluid? I did not order any parts for the master cylinder but perhaps I should have. As always any and all comments appreciated.
  17. Ok guys. Here are a couple more pics of caliper and pistons. I have cleaned the pistons exterior with brake clean, cloth and fine steel wool and wash again with brake clean. Have pushed pistons back in and using brake pedal pushed them back out again. Trouble is they all move at different rates. So using blocks and c-clamps I have got them to this stage still attached to the brake system. I now plan on removing caliper from bike, draining as much brake fluid from caliper as possible, and gently using air push pistons out. They must be so close to coming out now! Any other ideas/suggestions. Thanks to all the replies so far, and to the PM's I have gotten.
  18. This morning I found some time to remove the right side bag and get a closer look at that caliper. Took some pics (sorry about the quality) and have attached them here. I would say just by looking that 3 out of the 4 pistons are not moving and are frozen. I will clean them up more and then try to loosen the frozen ones by blocking or clamping the others and then actuating the brake pedal, being careful not to shoot the piston right out. Once they are all loose, then I will disconnect the brake line and use air to remove the pistons completely, again being careful. Sounds like the right approach?
  19. Beautiful bike Gary. Hope you really enjoy it. If you are ever heading west in the flatlands of Sask be sure to drop in or meet at least. They call us the "Gap" between Alberta and Manitoba but you are more than welcome!
  20. If you have the broken off pins, grind a flat top to the pin and drill down through the center. Use a round headed screw and attach the pin to where it broke off. I did this with my 89 and posted pics here on 1st gen tech.
  21. Thanks Rocket. Will try to take it apart tomorrow night so I can make a decision to order parts Thursday.
  22. I found those also...good price. However, Flatout says I need two. Squeeze says I need four, and my manul (printed off this site for 86-93) on page 6-14 says I need four. If I take the caliper off, then brake fluid will drain out of the hose, correct? Should I put hose end in container and activate rear brake foot lever until it quits pumping fluid? Introduces air but what else can I do? The fluid is probably colored to some extent and should be changed anyway. Is there a good way to get these pistons out of the caliper? If I do manage to get them out, do they have to go back into the same hole ie don't mix them up? Thought I read somewhere about using forced air to get pistons out? What about seals...do they stay in or come out with pistons? Sorry for so many questions but have never done this before.
  23. I have a 1989 Venture. When I crawled underneath to get a good look at my brake pads I found this. Hope the pics show it well enough. The pad to the outside of the wheel (ie right side of bike when sitting on it) has worn at a very bad angle. The other pad is not as bad, but actually has the opposite wear angle. Obviously, the pads need replacing. I suspect the pistons and seals as well? Are there only two pistons in the rear calibre? That is what local Yamaha dealer says....at about $113 each and another $50 for pads. Is there a cheaper source online? Should I get a kit and redo the master rear as well? Thanks.
  24. The new rear light is 6x 12v, 3w bulbs. Two are signal. The others can be hooked 100% brake, 100% running, or 50/50 brake and running. I just assumed the bulbs were 1157 until I opened the package today and had planned on maybe changing them to LED's.
  25. I am ahead of you there Marcarl except I left them in for a couple of hours. Just cooling down now and then I pop them back into the canister.
