Gerald, I have wondered the very same thing. In the last couple of days I have even considered putting a switch in the inhibitor line in case I have another problem with one of the switches. It would be so easy just to flip the switch and see if the bike runs better. I just hate to have another contact point in that line. This would be similar to the switch the 2nd genners are doing around the ignition switch problem they are having. RandyA

I am with Squeeze on this one. I don't think I have had to replace the carb bowl o-ring on any of the carbs I have worked on and you are saying all four are leaking? Something don't look right here. RandyA -
Scott, do you have any drop in the tach for that second it it doing the lurch? I don't mean because the rpm's are actually going down some, but an instantanious drop. This may indicate you have a power failure to the coils. One thing I would suggest is to remove the airbox and on the six pin connector on the TCI, which is right under the battery box, see if you can pull the black wire with the white stripe out of the connector. It will be on the bottom right. You may need a knifeblade to undo the latch on the terminal so it will pull out. It is also easier with the connector undone. Once you have undone the black/white wire, plug the connector back up, put the airbox back on and go for a ride. This is the inhibitor wire for all the safety switches and relays like the side stand switch and kill switch so keep in mind that none of that will work. If there is no change, then you will have eliminated all those switches and relays as contributors to the problem. If the bike runs better, then you have something in that system that is causing a problem. RandyA

I got the bike running good again and it appears it was the tilt over switch coming out of the holder and hanging down. As soon as I get a clearification on something from Frog Man, I am going to post an emergency checklist on electrical so if you have a problem with one of the things in the inhibit circuit, such as the side stand switch, kill switch or tilt switch, you can disconnect and go on your way. Thanks Gerald. What I am hoping to do with this is to not only fix my problem, but come up with a basic checklist that the 1st genners (and maybe 2nd) can print out and keep on their bikes. I suspect that many, like me, carry an ohm meter with them and if they had at least some idea what to check, or bypass or even disconnect to help them get home, I believe it would be a valuable tool. In the 13 years and over 100,000 miles since I have had my bike, I don't remember any time I have enjoyed riding more than lately as it has been running so good. I just want to be able to have a little more trust in it than I have now. This is the first time it has ever stranded me. RandyA

I suspect Carl hit this nail dead on the head. If you have a vacuum gage with four hoses attached to the manifolds and plug the three you are not using, you should be able to get close enough to ultimately use the set up that you have. I wish I was closer as I would use my mercury gages and hope you did not suck the mercury out of them. I suspect you are so far off that you could take the breather off and hold open the slides and see how the throttle plates look. You may be able to visually get them closer than they are now. RandyA

Hey Tim, I took a look at it today and with the instructions Frog Man has in the tech section, I am not seeing that I have a bad TCI, yet. I do have elevated resistance on the inhibitor wire that goes from the TCI to the various switches and relays. This is a test you do with the unit powered up and the ignition on. Also, in that mode, if I have it in gear and put the side stand down, the resistance does not change. Or, if I flip the kill switch, the resistance does not change. Gerald (Frog Man) returned my call and we went over it some and he told me to pull the inhibitor wire out of the connector and see if it will start. That is on my agenda tomorrow after work. I am still of the opinion that somewhere in that circuit I have a problem. Thanks for checking on me. RandyA

I am trying real hard to understand what you are doing. Are you sure you are adjusting the correct screws? It sounds like you are trying to adjust the fuel/air mixture screws when you are counting turns. I suspect using transmission fluid would require a very small orifice in the line to slow the oscillations of vacuum surges. It does sound like your #4 has much more vacuum, which would require that carb throttle plate to be opened more. RandyA

In the middle picture, the hoses you have in your hand are connected to the YICS ports, which would indicate the engine is a 1200, not a 1300. That is not the ports used for the Jason mod. These ports should be capped. The tubes on top of the carbs are vent tubes that are pointing to the left and as noted should be to below the engine. It looks like you have tubes on the inlet fuel tubes. RandyA -

Yep, the bike and I are home. After about two weeks of rain, I awoke to a beautiful morning, checked the weather channel and rain appeared to be south and east of me, Smokey Mountain to the Asheville area. So, I decided to take a ride toward south west Virginia, which ended up being Kentucky. I was alone as Laura is in Birmingham on the way to Gulf Shores, AL. visiting her sisters and brother. The bike was running absolutely great. So much pull at 40mph in 5th that I just knew I had to be in 4th . I rode thru shady two lanes that had a wall of mountain and trees on one side and a deep ravine on the other side and feeling like you were in the middle of no where. Just a perfect motorcycle day. I dropped off the mountain down in to Harlan, KY to a four lane and strip malls. I then found down town and it was a very pretty small town. But, while riding thru town, my bike started the intermittent cutting off and back on, real bad. I was able to make it back out on to the four lane and pulled into where an Advance Auto was located. Then it quit and would not restart. After determining my problem was electrical, as in getting no spark, I started going thru the usual checks of side stand switch, any connections I could find, such as those connected to the TCI and struck out. After messing around with it for about three hours, I started looking for help getting it home. My first call was to "SGN", Steve Neal, and we discussed our options, He had a commitment that was going to take a little time then he was going to load up his trailer and come after me. I then realized I had "Hairman", Tim's phone number saved, so I called him. His response was I will get the trailer and be there as soon as I can. And he was. I was hoping to just get the bike back part of the way, but Tim insisted on bringing me all the way home, which would be at least a 250 mile round trip for him all together, and he did not one time make fun of my antique 1st gen. What a guy. So, I am home and tired and getting ready to get some sleep. Tomorrow I will start the searches on the TCI checks and start looking at the other electrical stuff. But tonight I am just real thankful I have had the honor and pleasure in meeting some real good people on this website. Thanks very much Tim and Steve. RandyA

Newbie quesion... Fair Price on an '87 Venture

One thing that is sometimes a clue to me is rotors, especially on a MKI. If I saw a 30K mile bike with a lot of wear on the rotors, I would suspect 130K. I know that some pads like EBC HH are more severe on rotors, but I would also doubt that would be the wear factoron that bike. RandyA -
Several years ago on a hot summer day, I was behind a car I was getting ready to pass. Just about the time it was clear and I was ready to go around, the car passed over a dead opossum that was very swelled up. I centered it, and it exploded. The stench was so bad on the bottom of the bike that I had to go to a car wash to wash it off and get it off my shoes and pants. I learned a lesson on that one, don't get so close you cannot see for a distance what a car in front of you is passing over. Glad it was not more than a bump to you. RandyA

Looks like you done good Herb. It was a good lesson for all of us and we appreciate you posting the details. You should get a lot better sync now and I bet it does run stronger and smoother. That should also help with the vibrations on the grips. Oh, and you do a good job representing us 1st genners at the rally on that thing. RandyA -
Frank, Thank you for sharing this with us. I have been a member of this group since early on and was a member of the other group before that. It is such a great thing that so many with this group really want to help other. I have had so much help and I have tried to help others when I can. And, I bet you can't wait to sync someone else's carbs and help them out. This is really just another testament to what Freebird has put together here and has nurtured so well. RandyA

digger, the best way to do it is to install the lighted unit, rather than the reflector stock type. I put one on a friends 87 and it worked great. They used to be available at BigBikeParts.com, or something like that, for about $50, but I am not sure who may have them now. RandyA -
