Grounding Passing Lamps
jlh3rd replied to LilBeaver's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
there is a tube frame in the fairing that holds the electronic control box.......i used one of the four bolts at the corner as a ground for my lamps from the relay..... -
i'm not surprised.....no matter how much we think that a designer/manufacturer did a bad job......bottom line is that they do a good job of R and D and know the clearance tolerances of their motors........and what grades of oil should be used...... and over the years manufacturing processes have gotten better, tolerances tighter , oils better....and sometimes old rules just don't apply anymore
-
my understanding is that a 20w-50 means that the oil will get no thinner than a 50 w oil at running temp. ........and no thicker than a 20 w oil at colder temps......supposedly the test for the high temp. is measured at 210 F.......i don't know what temp the cold rating is measured at...... the oil will actually change it's viscosity within it's rating based on temps. that's always been the way i've understood it.......
-
10w-30 is not within the range of 5w-40........it doesn't work that way......we're not talking about ranges between oil ratings, we're talking the range specified by the manufacturerfor the oil for the motor in question.......so...at operating temp ( tested at 210 degrees) , if the manufacturer says they want an oil with the last number of 40, then the 5w-30 is not recommended because it will be thinner than the 40w at temp. if the last number is 50, then it would be too thick... also , at cold temps , they want the oil to flow as thin as a 5w, so the 10 w is too thick ......if the first number is a "0", then it would be too thin i'm just talking engineers and manufacturer's specs......and warranty......anyone can do as they please.....but if the manual says the oil should be a specific weight or range, and you run a different one than specified, and your motor develops a problem.....they could refuse to honor a warranty........they can tell what weight of oil you run............ course, i could just change my oil before i brought it in........i think.....

venture has no heating option
jlh3rd replied to Bobcatpat's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
heated liners, pants and jacket.......worn over jeans and long sleeve sweater type shirt......heated gloves...then a good two piece rain suit.......usually start wearing it around 50 degrees, and good to about 30's.. i have the upgraded stator but still wonder if it's overloaded the bike's systems, as my glove don't get as warm with everything on..... -
also on mine.....never dull works on it also

not motorcycle....suggestions for tire bead seating
jlh3rd replied to jlh3rd's topic in Watering Hole
this is my son's........i do this for people if they need it.....i have a truck....etc..... i think i get the bucket idea....but aren't i doing the same thing with my HF tire changer when it's resting on it?........but i see what your getting at.....if i flip the tire where the valve stem is on the bottom, then the bead will be over the stem and the strap might seat the upper bead and that might possible work. amarillo's just too far..... no pics....you'll have to read about any "explosions" in the news -

thanks for the ideas i didn't want to have to run down to a station everytime i do this....and didn't wanna spend $400....so, that's why i asked..... maybe i could modify the drain valve on my current tank.......but probably still not enough air would flow -
not motorcycle....suggestions for tire bead seating
jlh3rd replied to jlh3rd's topic in Watering Hole
squeeze yeh...it's enough as i do smaller tires all the time......the problem is that the bead is not making contact with the rim...too much air is escaping...or not enough air volume to compensate for the gaps too bad i couldn't modify my current tank to perform like the bead seating tool -

the valve core is out.........air is supplied by a typical 5hp, 120 psi compressor......and using the air nozzle gun blown into the valve.........when i used the strap , the tire would actually buckle and begin to fold up....i put the strap around the middle........and what is a bead seating tool, where can i get one, how much.......anyone have a pic of that? -
trying to seat the bead on an suv tire....17 inch rim.........i tried the ratcheting strap method......haven't tried the ( gulp) lighter fluid/starting fluid methods .......yet......any other ways?.......besides a service station.....

rdunbar read your post too late....but , in the future, if you have a bolt that you know or suspect is loctited...you need to heat that bolt up to release the loctite.....when i can't use a torch...i have a heat gun i use -

gs51 my short answer is..i don't worry about it......in the 5 past years that i've traveled all out west...and this year the blue ridge and natchez trace.....i've never encountered any mishaps with the law......... i have a harley davidson pouch that fit in the space on my former electra glide where the radio could go. this black bag has belt loops on it......so this bag rides in the trunk or side bag with my pistol in it...and i put it on if i feel i need to when off the bike.......and the pistol is on the night stand next to the bed in the hotel at night......

my oil pressure , at start up, runs about 60+.at speed.... at idle, about 40psi.......after water temp stabilizes at around 190-210.....my oil pressure runs about 28-30 psi, in 5th gear, at 70mph..at idle, about 8psi....if i shift into 3rd, or 4th....and run the revs up...my oil pressure can rise to 40-60 psi......
