guess the "touch wood" thing didn't work, after getting 500 km or so on so far it's leaking from the top of the head now!!!!!!! Valve cover gasket..... Bike's back at the dealership. Silver lining is that I won't miss the riding as it is supposed to snow again tomorrow - forecaster said "heavy snow"..... -

I think this video demonstrates the phenomenon well. Sorry if someone posted it before... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47LCLoidJh4]YouTube - Think! New Moonwalking Bear Advert! Awareness Test![/ame] -
sounds like the rear hub needs some lube... mine did the same thing shortly after I picked it up.

I thought I posted a follow up... Must be my Alzheimer's kicking in.... I got the repair done late last year and then put the bike away for the winter (drove it 50 km after the repair) I didn't notice any leaks at that time. It's still pretty cold here but went for a short rip with no oil leaks. I need to run it longer to make sure but I think it's good to go... I believe they changed the head gasket and re-tourqed the head bolts as per a service bulletin from Yamaha. -
I've played with google maps and the built in mapping on my blackberry and it's not very good. It's slow and often doesn't refresh quick enough to keep up with travelling - I don't drive that fast! I bought a streetpilot 330 a few years ago and when I got my Venture I then bought a RAM mount that works great. The device isn't waterproof so I take it off in the rain but otherwise it's great - my mother in law made a shield that shades the screen in bright sunlight but that wash out in bright light isn't too bad anyways. My wife has since snagged the 330 for her car so I bought a nuvi 250 ($200 at Black's Photography) which has the same functionality of the 330. They are so easy to use I would recommend them for anyone. They don't do multiple routes like the 2760 (you know: from here, to here, to here...) but it'll do one route with a via point on the way. I just need a different RAM mount for the nuvi on my venture but they sell for about $9. the nuvi's and streetpilots come with all the maps of North America pre-installed, are updatable, have rechargeable batteries that last more than 6 hours and can be recharged with a regular USB cable. No bluetooth or MP3 player but you can get a picture slideshow on the nuvi (I don't know why...)

thanks for all the suggestions - I had a buddy come over and we managed it! We ended up extending the factory cable with some cat 5 cable so i was able to reach the trunk - looks almost factory.

I am trying to mount a Yeasu FT 10sr, it's an amateur radio. It consists of a control head and a box that contains the actual radio that is separated by a cable. I can not find a good spot for the box. It is about 4 inches square and 2 deep but needs room in front for the antenna connections. The cable between the two boxes is not quite long enough to go back to the trunk if I have the control head mounted high on the handle bars. I may be able to get it into the trunk by moving the control head further down the bars but was wondering if anyone knows another spot that would accommodate the box? There doesn't appear to be any room under the seat or behind each side cover. Anywhere else where there's some space?

my mother in law made a shield out of leather for mine! It just wraps around the edge of the screen as a shade.

[rant]It really frustrates me that people expect pain when they buy a new computer. You shouldn't have to wait for the geek squad to get online! It seems as if the "support" community has taught us to expect to rely on them to get things done.[/rant] You owe it to your self to try out a Mac, they just work. I have heard a few people going back to XP as the improvements in Vista did not seem worth the price of the upgrade, too bad.

I've asked around and not really found the solution. The yaesu FTm 10 looks good but I don't need another AM/FM radio along, you know... I am currently just trying to mount my portable somewhere although I'd love to get a real mobile mounted. The portable is too small to be able to use with gloves on or be able to read the screen. The last post is probably the best install pics I have seen. We need a mobile that is the same size as the cassette deck and swap that out! Anyone put a third antenna on somewhere? I don't want to give up the CB either.... 73 de VE6HBY BTW - where is Lake Demay?

Call from dealer yesterday. Recall on my 07' Venture
Twenty7Delta replied to a topic in Watering Hole
I noticed the oil on my sidestand and then oil behind the left rear cylinder - that was the sign of the leaking gasket. My dealer is doing the service bulletin now. -
my 07 leaks like crazy from the left rear cylinder and is going in for repair when the season's over - I just have to wash it more than I usually would.....

on my streetpilot you can only route to a location, you can't specify which route to take but you can detour and it'll automatically recalculate. The only addition to that is that you can have one via point - after you select your destination, you can pick a gas station or whatever and route through that point to your destination. If I want to go a specific route then I will enter each intersection along the way and route to those in turn. They'll pop up in the "recent selections" so you can find them easily on the way if you find for them ahead of time...

that's excellent - thanks -
I'm usually into Johnny Cash or AC/DC but I also play the bagpipes and I love the looks I get when I have the Simon fraser University pipe band or a good solo recording cranked up. I usually get some thumbs up!!

good stuff, thanks. I took a couple more pics after someone on the delphi forums asked me to take the fins off. I will change the oil and fill it less (Iread somewhere that 3 quarts will take it to the half way mark). You can't really see the seepage on the cylinders in the pics but there is definitely some at the bottom of the cylinder around what appears to be the edge of a gasket. http://www.fototime.com/DA59E06A064A4D2/standard.jpg http://www.fototime.com/BA879DBB9455CD8/standard.jpg -

thanks for the quick reply - I have been mulling that around too. The same dealership did the oil change but probably not the head mechanic... Is this what the "blow by" would look like? Half way up the sight glass is good then? I am surprised the dealership didn't check that - it's not like it's the first Venture they have worked on..... -
I am really worried about a leak on my new Venture. I have used the dealership for 15 plus years and do trust them but this problem really concerns me. I picked up the bike in August and on the first few miles I noticed some coolant behind the left rear cylinder. The dealership said that they re-torqued the head bolts and it should be all good. I then noticed some oil in the same spot and it seemed to continue. I basically have oil all over the side stand and drips all over the garage floor. I have never needed to add oil as the level is right at the top of the sight glass. The mechanic feels that there must be something wrong with a gasket as it is not seating properly and because of the slow nature of the leak he said it was OK to ride and he would pull the motor apart over the winter when it wasn't cutting into my riding season. He most recently told me that he talked to a rep at a convention and was told that Yamaha used a new environmentally friendly process for bolt retention instead of something like loc-tite that they had always used and that might be contributing to the problem. My fears include: that the bike will always leak (given this "new" technique") plus I have oil all over the underneath of my bike. I have also heard that over filling the oil could cause blow by. Since my oil level is way up at the top of the sight glass, could the leak be that blow by? Just wondering... Any other thoughts? I am not well versed in the mechanics of the motor and thought some of you might have some insight. sorry for the long post - if you have any more questions I can ask my mechanic... Here are 3 pictures of the left rear cylinder and from underneath. You can see where the oil settles (I have not cleaned the bike for a week so that the pics would be obvious).. http://www.fototime.com/554B44BC04B821F/standard.jpg http://www.fototime.com/287EB48769D72E4/standard.jpg http://www.fototime.com/D9E90F19B12FC8C/standard.jpg

I just got mine a month ago - I moved up from a V Star 1100 - and I love it! I think I could probably ride it forever, I just don't tire out on it at all. I have done one 3200 km ride since I got it and lots of commuting - I'll jump on it to go around town no problem. We keep the speeds way down and I got close to 50 mpg (US) for the whole trip. I have been doing lots of parking lot practice and feel pretty comfortable with U turns and panic stops but I want to take it to an advanced rider course next year (after the soon to arrive SNOW melts). I put 5 psi in the front suspension and 20 in the back. Others seem to run more in the back but I am working my way up... One negative - I am not all that happy with the paint quality, lots of little scratches already ;-( My V Star feels like a dirt bike now!

'Supersport' motorcyclists have highest death rate
Twenty7Delta replied to SilvrT's topic in Watering Hole
This one caught my attention! "43. Seventy-three percent of the accident-involved motorcycle riders used no eye protection, and it is likely that the wind on the unprotected eyes contributed in impairment of vision which delayed hazard detection." unless wearing a full face helmet counts - I can't believe people would ride without some sort of eye protection!! Either that or their glasses just couldn't be found on the accident scene..... -
cutting windshield down on '07 RSMV
Twenty7Delta replied to Twenty7Delta's topic in General Tech Talk
Thanks! I talked to a fellow today who had cut his down and he said he gets lots of buffeting around his head - I used to ride a V-Star and looked over the shield I put on it by quite a bit and never really found all that much buffeting. Do you think it's bad or not? -
My bad - I just found Newman's post - sorry for the repeat.... I have an appointment on Thursday at a local plastics shop to get my shield cut down. I have to do it - I can't stand looking through it in the rain or when there are lots of bugs on the shield. I am a little nervous about how far to cut it down - I have to go low enough to look over it so probably about 4 inches from the top. My fear is that may be too much and then I would be disappointed. I don't want to end up looking at the edge though, got to look over it. I am curious if you've done this and how it went. How much did you cut off and how did it affect the air flow? Do you get more buffeting, how about your passenger? Do you regret cutting it. I read some of the threads about the Clearview's as a replacement and may go that way but not yet... What about the shape? Did you end up with the same shape as stock or did you flatten the curve a bit? I'd love to hear your stories - I found an article online about how to do it myself but power tools and I are a bad mix, usually resulting in a poor finished product and multiple sutures for me ;-) Andrew
