  1. I had an '04 which had the noise and the basket was replaced with an "I" basket which helped about 75%. I now have a new '07 which I've had for 2 weeks now and I don't hear any of the noise in it at all. Maybe they got it right towards the end of the '07 run. Who knows? DT
  2. For vibration dampening try using a piece of polyurethane foam. You can vary the dampening characteristics by adjusting the thickness and bearing surface area. DT
  3. I've been looking at the Senergy jacket liner and I think I would try them for my next jacket liner. I have the Warm-N-Safer jacket liner and I am not completely satisfied with it. The lining stitching is coming apart after one season. The jacket doesn't get warm in the upper back area. Assuming the Senergy get warm, at $159 it is a much better value. DT
  4. Last Sunday my wife and I rode from Lexington, KY to Maysville, KY and crossed the Ohio river via the bridge at Maysville. After stopping for lunch at the "Lively Lady" in Aberdeen we continued west along the river until coming to the Augsta Ferry ( http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM246Z ). We then crossed back into KY via the Ferry to Augusta, KY. From there we followed highways 19 and 62 back through north central KY. Although it was a bit cooler than my wife would have liked, we did enjoy the ride. I've got to get these rides in before the weather turns too bad. Photos attached. DT
  5. Kit, Good luck to you. You will be rewarded with a great bike once you get it resolved. I had an '04 RSV that had a bit of a chirp, or whine, or whatever you call it. It was annoying between 45 and 60. I lived with it for a year or so and then after reading about the "I" basket here I asked my dealer to order one for me under warranty. A great dealer by the way. Anyway, Yamaha asked him to ride the bike and confirm the noise. They did and ordered the basket right away. It only took about a week to get it. This was back in the June time frame. They put the basket in and it probably solved 70% of the problem. The rest I could live with. Now, after crashing the '04, I have a new '07 with about 600 miles on it now and so far I hear no chirping or whining at all. I have no idea what type of basket it has but it is quiet. That is my experiene, your mileage may vary. Dennis
  6. I tend to wave at everyone on two wheels and the little kids with their face against the mini van window as long as it is safe to do so (not negotiating a corner or tight curve). What do you guys do when you approach a group of riders, 15 to 20 bikes in a line? I generally hold my hand out until the first few pass and then give it up. DT
  7. I think he is giving you an excellent price. I just bought a new '07 for $13,800+tax. Don't they deduct the value of your trade-in for sales tax calculation on the new one. If so, you would be better to trade it in. DT
  8. Well they outa be tarred and feathered! DT
  9. Sorry guys, I posted the photos in a new thread... http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=15969 Thanks for keeping me honest! Dennis
  10. Check out the Whelen light bar that I have on my bike, there is a photo in my gallery. It has a couple of second flash, nearly a strobe effect before it stays on full. It does catch peoples attention. Dennis
  11. I have the Zumo 550 and a Streetpilot 2610 before that. Both let you set your end point, begining point and many via points in between. I use the via points to force it to take me off of the most direct route. Most of the time I just set the route up with the GPS. I have not used a Nuvi but I would expect it to work similarly. DT
  12. I do like pillow top seats better. I had change to those on my '04 Midnight a year or so ago. Dennis
  13. Sure David, It's really pretty easy. Would probably take about an hour counting time to remove the tank. Just send me a message when you would like to do it. Dennis
  14. I picked up my new bike yesterday and as promised, here a few photos. I spent the day today installing my electronics (GPS, XM, Tach, led brake light), handlebar risers, and highway pegs. I have a few more things to do but I am going to ride tomorrow. If you would like to see higher resolution photos they can be found at: www.traynorphoto.com/07venture Dennis
  15. My totaled '04 Midnight was hauled off by the salvage company yesterday and this afternoon I picked up my new'07 blue/black RSV from the dealer. It sure felt different on the 25 mile ride home. The engine is quieter, not the pipes, but the mechanical engine noise, even at idle. Absolutely no whine from the clutch basket. I had the "I" basket on the '04 and this one is quieter. The transmission seemed to shift a bit smoother. This evening I put the handlebar risers and highway pegs on and now it feels right. Tomorrow I'll work on getting all of my electrical accessories installed and should be ready nice long day ride by Sunday. Oh, and I know the rules, pics will follow tomorrow. Dennis
  16. I must say I have had similar thoughts today. After totaling my bike 3 weeks ago and coming out of that relatively unharmed I have been thinking a lot about getting back on, or not. I read of Gary and Leslie this afternoon and my heart sank. A short time later my dealer called me to let me know I can pick my new bike up tomorrow. I paused a few seconds before telling him I would be there tomorrow and I am still questioning if it the right thing to do. But as others have said, it is a lifestyle and I truly feel there would be a big hole in mine if I give it up now. I expect I'll be a lot more cautious and provide much more space around me in the future. If I find I'm not comfortable back on the bike there will be a very low mileage '07 RSV for sale in the spring. DT
  17. Oh what a can of worms I opened. That wasn't my intent. Let me say that I support everyone's right to choose. On this and most topics that limit my choice I am opposed to legislation that limits my freedoms. But back to my original comment, I just don't understand why people take the risk. I understand the arguments for comfort, visibility, etc. However, I also know that there is a Honda Accord that got a new windshield due to my helmeted head contacting it and I am certain I would have suffered serious injury or death had it not been for that helmet. That being said, I'll stand by anyone to support their right to choose. I choose a helmet. Dennis
  18. Well I am considerably heavier than you and my wife is about the same weight as your girlfriend, maybe a bit less, and it is a handful to get off the sidestand fully loaded if you've got it leaning down hill. I always have my wife mount the bike after I have taken if off the sidestand so her weight doesn't come in to play most times. I am careful at stops to make sure I don't let it get over too far or it can be a real struggle to keep upright. DT
  19. My wife and I have been vacationing in SW Florida for the last week or so and we have seen hundreds, if not thousands of bikes on the road. Especially this weekend. Of all those bikes I don't think we've seen more than 30 or so riders wearing helmets and most are riding in shorts. I realize that this is a warm climate but I don't see how that makes it safe enough to ride without proper head protection. Having just survived a crash 2 weeks ago, where my helmet clearly saved my life, I am on a crusade to spread the word about the benefit of riding with a helmet. Please ride with one. Dennis
  20. Thanks for sharing that. I was able to show it to my wife and I believe she understood the concept of the engine performance. DT
  21. Kentucky is becoming a football school once again. GO Cats! DT
  22. I've got a wallmounted 42" Panasonic plasma in the bedroom and we've been very happy with it. It is a 720p/1080i set. I went to a high end shop before buying it and compared the same signal on 720p, 1080i, and 1080p and I really couldn't see the difference. I would like to upgrade our family room set and I am leaning toward one of the new, 6-color DLP sets. Probably Mitsubishi. DT
  23. With the speedohealer my odometer and speedometer are correct with the GPS. This summer on a 4800 mile trip the bike's odometer was off about 40 miles when compared to the GPS odometer. That's close enough for me. DT
  24. That is a good question Charlie. Since I totaled the bike a couple of weeks ago I have been questioned the decision to keep riding often. Since getting back into riding 3 years ago after a 15 years away from it I have been doing 18k to 20k miles a year. It's just something I don't think I could give up. My wife hasn't waivered and she is fully supportive of the decision to get back on. While I always considered myself a safe rider I am sure I'll take a second look now when I pull out, leave a bit more distance between me and traffic, maybe not ride quite so fast, etc. All things I should be doing anyway, the crash was just a wakeup call to be even more vigilant. As has been said, I want to enjoy life while I can and I can think of few things that give me more pleasure than riding. DT
  25. While vacationing in Ft. Myers Fl this week, I decided to go shopping for a new helmet today. I visited all of the area dealerships in my quest. BMW/Triumph/MV Agusta/Ducati, Yamaha/Suzuki/Honda, Kawasaki and Harley shop. After all of the visits I came away with a few impressions. The BMW shop was small the people generally friendly but somewhat looked down their nose at people not on one of their brands. They had very few helmets and all of their apparel seemed to be the BMW brand. Yamaha/Suzuki/Honda shop was huge and new. Very few helmets styles to try, just a lot of the same thing. No one seemed to care that I was there or not. Did not really feel welcomed there. The Kawasaki dealer seemed more into watercraft than bikes. There was a young guy there that came up to talk with me a bit and he was friendly enough. Once again, not many helmets to choose from. The Harley dealership was the most inviting. While they also didn't have the type of helmet I was looking for, they were very cordial and welcoming. I was approached several times by friendly staff seeking to help me. Not pushy, just wanting to make sure I was taken care of. There was a lot of activity in the store with staff moving about taking care of business. One gentlemen asked what type of bike I rode and when I told him he offered a compliment on the bike and didn't seem to think any less of me. Of course there were a few Harley owners around with the "Harley" look and maybe attitude. I must say, if I knew nothing about bikes and were shopping today for a new one the folks at the HD store would have had first crack at my business. And the new Harleys sure are pretty with all of the chrome shining. Still helmet shopping. Dennis
