  1. I am getting ready to split the faring (first time by my self). I found the write up by Squidley expaining this is done and how to install the spilt audio cable so that I can install my new Zumo 550. My question is this, can I just tap into the electrical power behind the power outlet inside the faring for my GPS power or should I get the power from somewhere else? Thanks---
  2. I don't usually write letters or post things like this but I have to this time. I purchased a Zumo 550 about 18 months ago and I've loved it. It's been great and done everything I could have wanted. A couple weeks ago I took a trip to Florida and on the trip I had my first problem. The unit locked up and I couldn't get it to do anything. I tried all the usual stuff like pulling the battery and doing a hard reset but nothing worked. When I got home I called Garmin for some help. We went through all the steps again and it was obvious I would have to send it in. The unit was out of warranty so I was just hoping it wouldn't cost too much. The Garmin rep. said she had heard of this happening before but it was very rare and she'd never heard of it with the Zumo. She said it was obvious I hadn't done anything wrong so she was going to cover the repair under warranty anyway. (I hadn't requested that, she just offered) I thanked her and sent it off last week. I expected to have a repaired unit some time around Christmas if I was lucky because of the season, vacations etc. I had no complaints because after all they were doing this for free when they didn't have to. When I got home yesterday I had a brand new unit waiting for me. They even loaded the most current version of maps so I don't have to purchase them. There and back in one week!! Over the holidays!!! FOR FREE!!!!! Now that's what I call customer service. The Zumo 550 is already the best bike GPS out there and with this type of service I have really become a loyal customer. With the differences in GPS systems becomming less and less, this is what will continue to keep Garmin as the leader. Just had to let you all know.
  3. Greetings all! I have a small issue I would like to lay on the table. I have a new Zumo 500 and the MapSource map/software for North America as well as Iceland installed on my computer as well on my memory card in the Zumo. Have been planing some routes from Woodstock twn,NY to Oberlin OH. for my trip to Freebirds Maintenance Day. When I make a route on the map that is stored in my computer I can push a button that says "open in Google Earth". No problem there - it opens in Google Earth but the route does not follow the roads. Just straight lines from each trackpoint to another that I had made in the MapSource. Doesn´t help much if I want to take a ride in 3D on Google Earth to see the landscape I will be riding through. Does anybody know if there is a way around this to make the route follow the roads in Google Earth, previously trackpointed in the MapSource map? Then again - Maybe this is not compatible???? Note that transferring the routes from the computer to my Zumo is no problem and works just fine. Hope you get my drift!
  4. I had the fairing apart removing the cassette player and decided to take out the Kennedy cellset for my Zumo 550. It works fine, puts Zumo audio and telephone through the headsets but I may have used it twice in the last last year or so. Anyway if anyone is interested here what is included: KT-CELL-INT-FPD 5 pin cellset intercom harness KT-95413 cellset MC/GPS-ICS/MIC KT-95423 Zumo device harness A 12v power cord will be needed or one can be ordered from Kennedy for $20. $130 includes shipping via USPS, parts list for $225. More information and diagrams available at http://www.cellset.com/multigps.html
  5. For those who have 550's; Just got back from a 4300 mile ride, Zumo locked up three times. Would not respond to anything. The solution is to unscrew the battery, count to ten and replace. It all comes back to normal. Also discovered that some of the route calculations involve some trully idiotic combinations - I guess the programing guys in Mumbai are not as swift as advertised! Also, don't blindly follow instructions ! this thing will repeatedly send you on secondary dirt roads and even off a clif if you are not carefull! Fording streams on dirt roads ain't my bag on a 900 pounder ! Yess, it did happen.
  6. What is the recommendation GB for an SD card for the Zumo 550 and appx how many songs will it hold? I read somewhere that no matter how much GB on your SD card the Zumo will only read 500 songs...I doubt I ever put that many on but want to know. Tom
  7. I'm not looking for a can of worms, but need the opinion of the people that know. I can buy a Garmin Zumo 450, for the same price as a TomTom Rider 2nd edition. I need to know the advantages and shortcomings if anyone has that info. I may go to a Zumo 550, but it seems to me that the TomTom has it all covered. Thanks Carl
  8. If anyone needs another mount for anything. Check this place out. http://www.CustomMounts.com/ They have decent prices. I needed another garmin mount for a bike and they have them in stock for the Zumo series.
  9. Does anyone have a picture of how they mounted the Zumo 550 on their First Generation?
  10. Actually a couple of questions. My computer does not have a SD card slot. Can I put the card in my Zumo and download music with the USB cable? Does anyone know of a free site to convert WMA music files to MP3. I read that the Zumo only plays MP3.
  11. Anyone know how and where to get the Buddyrich cable that connects your Garmin Zumo 550 microphone to your headset wiring? I have seen threads talking about a Buddyrich cable, but I'm not sure where to get one and how much they are. Please help.
  12. I have a Zumo 550 and have it paired with my Blackberry. I have the Nolan helmet wired with the J&M headset. The problem is although I can hear the person they can not hear me when I speak. Any ideas?
  13. Best Buy lists the zumo 500 for $899 on their web site but many of the stores are clearing them out for $539 as an in store special only. If you go to the website, look up the 550 then use the link to do a search for a local store with one in stock you may get lucky.. The web site continues to show $899 but if you have a local store with one in stock, call them, they may be doing the in store special. There were none in stock anywhere near me in North Florida but another store by a friend had one, he picked it up for me and is shipping it to me. I also noticed two stores in Orlando show them in stock.
  14. I am loking at buying the Zumo 550 and just have a couple questions I can't seem to find answers to on the web. Will the Zumo wire into our radios the same as an MP3 player or XM radio? I have read a lot about bluetooth headsets or ear buds but want to just plug it in to the radio. If it does plug into our radios will the MP3 play in stereo? Is it worth the extra money for the 550 instead of the 450? Bluetooth is not as important to me but I like the XM radio. Is there any cheaper option than almost $200 for the XM radio antenna? I now have a seperate XM radio and a MP3 player on the bike, neither of which is waterproof. I'm just looking at one thing that will give me the GPS plus the other features. Thanks for your input.
  15. Hi Guys, I just bought a ZUMO 550 and I remember reading a post in here that a Venture member makes this special cable that hooks into the audio system to use with ZUMO 550.....not sure who that member is? Can anyone help? Thanks, PAUL http://www.windows-xp-update.com
  16. Have any of you that have a Zumo 550 noticed a drop in volume when listening to mp3 or XM thru the Zumo? When I am listening to FM or to my mp3 player I usually have my volume set at 17-18 but if I switch to the Zumo and listen to mp3s or XM I have to turn the volume up to 27-28 to get the same sound level. Is this normal:confused07:
  17. Well I took the bike out for a ride today. The old Delphi Roady2 has been giving me fits and the fact that it isn't waterproof is bugging me. I decided to get a Zumo 550 based on the great reviews you guys have reported. So, I think I'll get one from buydig.com. Alot of you guys have had good results from this outfit. Price is really good too! So, it has a mount for the bike and for the car (good so I can use it in my wife's car). What else do I need? I want the XM option so I need an antenna? Do I need to buy anything for the MP3 media? Thanks, Bob
  18. My Zumo got sicky-poo , so it's off to Kansas tomorrow . Not to see Dorothy or the Wiz , but to get fixed . For the last several months , my touch screen has been a bit touchy or shall I say "Stucky" . Also the screens would switch to other prompts or not even respond to commands . These issues happened every once in awhile for the past few months , but I thought it was the cold that affected it . Today it was in the 70's and suddenly it froze up ..... I mean froze!!!!!! I followed every trouble shooting tip in the manual without prevail , so I call Garmin's tech support. I got my Zumo when they first came out . I've logged over 25K on it , downloading routes and other info. , keeping the memory down to a minimum . Making sure I kept up on all the updates as well . As I spoke to the nice gentleman on the phone (Garmin's Tech support), explaining what the Zumo was doing and what all I did to try to correct the issue , it mentioned that I did all that what could be done as if he had told me what to do . So after telling him my serial # of the Zumo , he checked on the registration date to see that my Zumo's warranty was definitely out , way out of date it was . The next words out of his mouth was , "Let me give you a RMA# to return the unit back to us for repair , UNDER WARRANTY!" ....WOW , I couldn't believe it as I got my Zumo back in mid year '06 . He also said that it would take about 10 days for repair and a few more days to return . They are also going to send me a new security screw that I lost out of the cradle and a new security screwdriver that I misplaced . So tomorrow , it's off to get repaired , if not replaced and at no charge . Though my cuz works as an engineer at Garmin in the avionics division , (snicker-snicker) and I didn't mention it to Garmin , I am total surprised ! And will be back in Hog-Heaven in somewhat 2 weeks from now when it returns . I hope my wife doesn't tells me to get lost now , cause I actually will now without my GPS .:rotf: BEER30
  19. Okay, Zumo 550 says it can talk to Bluetooth cell phones and headsets. My cell phone is compatible. Just purchased new headsets connected to factory intercom. Also, the audio out from the Zumo simply plugs into the Aux port of the cass player. How do I get the corded headset mic to talk into the mic port of the Zumo?
  20. A few members have expressed a wish for a POI list of VR Assistance members so that they can download the list as a Point of Interest (POI) file onto their Zumo’s. I don’t know how many members use the Zumo or if the interest is great enough to warrant the work so I will need some feedback from you first. If the interest is high then I will proceed, if not I won’t bother with it. First let me say this will require a lot of hours to complete but I don’t mind doing it because I’m retired and it will give me something to do when the weather is bad. Second there are no GPS coordinates in the list. Without them you will have to search the list on the Zumo by country then state or province and then city/town. To make it so that the Zumo can search for the nearest assistance automatically members would have to provide me with their GPS coordinates, this would make searching on the Zumo automatic, and automatic is always nice. Third I don’t know how long it will take me so you may have to wait a bit for it. I expect that I should be able to get the first file ready for download in about a month. After that it won’t take much time to keep it updated. The file size should be small enough to download onto the site at first but I’m not sure of that as of this time. If the file should happen to reach the size limit I’m sure Freebird will help out with that. So to begin with I’m asking for people to let me know as to weather or not they are interested. I will make the determination weather or not to proceed when I see if the interest will warrant the work and let you know. To find your GPS coordinates download Google Earth. In the Fly To field (top left hand corner of Google Earth) type in you address and click on the magnifying glass. If it is a valid address it will go there. After it does on the bottom of the google earth window you will see the GPS coordinates. NOTE: move your mouse pointer off the google earth window to read your coordinates because if you mouse is on the window the coordintes will change to where your mouse is. I.E. 19 cedar st malone ny should give you the following coordinates: 44 51 17.59 N 74 16 42.20 W This is what I need email them to jbissonette@stx.rr.com along with your first and last name. Thanks.
  21. Had problems with my Zumo after I "Upgraded" to the new 3.8 Software Version. After about 2 weeks fighting it, contacting Garmin and consulting the Zumo Forum (http://www.zumoforums.com) I finally got it working normal again and I am a happy Camper. The solution was found thru the forum and not Garmin support. I wanted to share with you because I know many use the Zumo and it may keep you from stressing out for 2 weeks like I did on the problem. After Installing the 3.8 Software and adding new songs to my SD card for a total of 650 songs I started having problems. Problem 1: Occasionally I would get a screen saying Updating Bluetooth and would have to shut the Zumo Down and start it back up to get going. Bluetooth would connect to my phone but would disconnect within 30 seconds, I would have to go to the settings and select the phone connection again then it would go thru the cycle again. Problem 2: When turning the Zumo on, it would go thru the bootup screens, etc and when you select view map it would take 6 minutes for the map to display on the screen, the MP3 player would not list the songs on the zumo until after the map was displayed. Solution to Problem 1: Removed the new version 3.0 bluetooth software, downloaded the previous 2.4 version and installed it as per this forum link: http://www.zumoforums.com/index.php?topic=3598.0 Solution to Problem 2: Reorganized my music files into folders with no more than 25 songs in a folder. I originally had all the songs (650) in 1 folder. This is what was causing the delay in displaying the map. This forum link explains the problem and give pointers on how to fix it. http://www.zumoforums.com/index.php?topic=3268.0
  22. Happy New Year I have a sirrius satellite hooked up to a mini amp on my rstd. My Wife bought me a zumo 550 for Christmas. Question is, If I get the antenna and switch to xm, does the antenna broadcast fm to the radio? Thanx Mark
  23. Garmin released software update version 3.80 on 12/20/07 (from version 3.30) for the Zumo 550. The one thing that I really like about it is that elevation is now five digits instead of just four. It use to be that if you went over the higher mountain passes, the elevation just showed "----". www.zumoforums.com has the info.
  24. So, I am thinking about getting a GPS unit. I know a lot of you have the ZUMO 550, others have Tom Tom etc. I just registered on the Zumo 550 forum to start learning about this type of technology, software, software needed, etc. I think I am now more confused than ever - in that it appears you have to do a lot of programming? I'm not really sure where to start in researching for this. I like (I think) the ZUMO - but would be looking for something fairly simple to utilize while on the road. Meaning, if I got to a location, decided to find some interesting back roads, can one just "push a button" and a unit tells you some neat roads? Looking at the ZUMO site, I guess I need to download some software into my computer, and transfer information between the two (computer/GPS unit?). I am not real savvy on computer programs, and/or .extensions. Is there one trip planning software better than another? I've been on rides where the guys have had laptops with them - and made new daily routes off the laptop into the GPS device - I don't have a laptop - hence wanting to "create routes on the fly". Can you do that? Sorry if these might be dumb questions, just looking for an area / forum to start learning this stuff. I am thinking if I am going to spend the money on something like this, I would want to use it to most of it's capacity. I would also not want to buy a "starter" unit, then have to upgrade in 6 months. Any help or suggestions from you "pros" and "gps newbies" out there????? Thanks in advance.:confused24:
  25. Well this has me a little p!$$ed. One of the reasons I bought the Zumo 550 was because it has XM Radio (with subscription). Turns out, the only antenna they sell is for weather, traffic and radio and it is very expensive. I just want a antenna for the XM radio. I can't find one anywhere. From what I can tell, the antenna hookup in the Zumo cradle is a special end. Seems while shopping around for an antenna, the ends are different for different brands of XM Radio's. I was thinking about ordering only the cable from Garmin, buying a $30 antenna and splicing the Garmin cable to it. Has anyone tried this? Is it possible? Is there an antenna that will work on the Zumo for ONLY the XM Radio? Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.
