  1. Yep...seat wobble and not front end wobble. Even though the seat is tightened up...I guess my fat A$$ still feels ever so slightly some movement and also some creaking. I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Also...do you think a hard rubber washer between the seat and the mount would both TIGHTEN up the seat and also alleviate the creaking? Any other suggestions (besides losing weight). I weigh about 220lbs.
  2. On the way home from work last night my bike developed a terrible wobble. After giving the bike the once over, I discovered the right side trunk mount bolts were missing. Who would have thought that could cause the wobble in the steering. Replaced the bolts and back to normal.

    Speed wobble?

New tires, balanced: front 36psi rear 42 psi wheel bearings felt solid when i tested them (front wheel on the ground and slid the wheel side to side) air set to 10 in the front, 15 in the rear.. i'm getting a slow wobble at speed (75mph) and also when going into turns at lower speed (60-65mph) i'm sure i should check the tripple tree bolts and the steering head bearing, but what else would you guys suggest to check?
  4. It's back! I installed the heavy brace which reduced the wobble, changed the front tire and it was basically gone Except for one small instance where I felt it ever so lightly. Now it's back. I've made some adjustments on the sidecar and need to correct the tracking but other then that No changes were made structurally. While out riding yesterday i had the great idea to give a quick tug on the handlebar, which immediately set off a brief wobble, but it also felt like there was a click when I tugged. Probably should have tugged on the right side too to see if the result was the same but didn't. Steering head??
  5. Greetings Although I'm very interested in installing a C/T due to the potential high mileage nearly every link I read concerning installation of C/T includes a wobble problem, so I have a few questions: 1. Do we know how many have installed the C/T's and had wobble problems vs those who have installed it with no problems? 2. Those who have installed the C/T, are you still running the tire? Thanks Chris
  6. Got the wobble on the way to work this morning at 76 mph (GPS indicated). Slowed down to 65 and the wobble subsided. Temp was 34 degrees and air pressure in tire is at 35 psi. I'll try different air pressures to see if that will take care of the problem. I work hard trying to make BabyDoll weathy, but I don' want to make her wealthy and a widow at the same time. Glenn
  7. dose every one with a c\t get a wobble? if not how do we fix it?
  8. So, if you were way out in back country, good road & visibility, you know your bike is in good shape (tires, shock, steering is tight, stock windshield), and you should take it up to 110 MPH (Mom, don't read this), what would make it get a steering wobble if you let off the gas to coast back to highway speed. Testing the (RSTD) bike yesterday, after a new rear shock was installed, I took it to speed. Acceleration and sustained speed 100 to 110 was fine, but when I let off to coast back to 60 it started pretty serious wobble. I corrected it by bring the engine back up to speed and decelerating more gradually. Seems, perhaps, the engine torque did not agree with something about the quick drop in speed. As it was correctable by increasing the RPM's, I don't think I can attribute it to steering (pretty new Avon tires and the steering head is tight). Ideas,,, (besides don't do that)? Mike G in SC

    I need some help please

My 09 Venture with 2k miles on is pulling to left and gets a wobble at 20 to 40 mph with no hands on it.. Dealer said the wobble is normal with no hands and the pulling to the left could be a tire and depends on yama mood and all they may replace it or may not.. My question is here does this sound like a tire issue and is the wobble sound right, it does not happen all the time, the pulling does...The air pressure in the forks is 0
  10. So I noticed today that when in a right hand turn at around 55 mph I got a slight wobble but not in a left hand turn. Any remakes on this? Thanks
  11. Well, I guess I need to replace my steering head bearings. I had the wobble at 80mph or so, and I tightened up the steering head a little. Now, the wobble is much better, but the steering response is way too sensitive now. It kind of feels like my tires are one inch wide now, and the bike teeters all over the place. Any small amount of input from me, and it overcorrects badly. I am constantly correcting back and forth when I am trying to cruise along. At acceleration, it is great, and as I said the wobble problem isn't near as bad. The bars aren't tight feeling either, just squirrelly. Sound like maybe new bearings and races will cure this?
  12. From what I have absorbed so far front wheel wobble can be caused by and corrected by addressing the following or a combination of the following: Front wheel out of balance front fender brace upgrade tightened cinch bolts on front forks Furbur washer fix solid motor mount upgrade Have I left anything out. Question: Can it also be caused by unequal amounts of fork oil in each of the forks?
  13. OK,IF your tires are not cupped, front or back, and If you have a VERY bad wobble when on decel or your bike seems to follow the grooves where it wasnt before, read Freebirds write up on "Tightening the Steering Head" in the 2nd Gen read only maintenance area. Mine had started wobbling so bad on decel I had to really have a grip on the handlebars. I thought it was my Avons wearing out,(13,000 miles on them still very good tread on it) But after feeling tires for cupping or unusual wear I figured OK,tighten the steering head. IT WORKS! No more wobble at ANY speed or on Decel. I have ridden alot of Ventures and quite a few has this wobble but it is a simple fix and the write up is dead on. I have included the link for our New Members that may not have figured out how to Navigate the forums yet.( I know I still have trouble but I am NOT Computer literate!) Here is the link. 14. Does anyone have the numbers to the upper and lower bearings and races for the triple tree. I want to minimize down time and reduce costs a bit. After my little shake and bake, I won't feel comfortable until I replace them. Oh, Mavrik:stickpoke: - about that keeping 1st Gens out front so you wouldn't run away from them. Masterguns said to remind you that my death wobble hit at 110mph in 4th gear. And you know my speedo is right on because we checked it against your GPS that morning several times. I think the wobble got triggered by cutting across the air wake from the front of the semi. I remember a slight gust as I replay the bronco ride. THat and a groove or tar snake would have started it. Weird but un-nerving. JB
  15. got a wobble at low speed with no hands on, speed up 40 no wobble Help.
  16. I know what your thinking and I can hear the lectures coming. I don't as a practice ride with no hands. I was resting one the other day and being very, very diligent with the other. For a brief moment when switching over my grip on the bars was very light and I felt what seemed like a wobble from the front end. I was curious so I followed up by slowly lightening my hand pressure from the grips. Sure enough just when I am about to not be touching the grips anymore the front starts to wobble. I have not let it go long, but it seems that it would get very prononced. Is this normal? As I said I don't ride with no hands and I don't ever feel this when holding the grips. Even with one hand. Could this be an out of balance tire or is it something else? Bug
  17. I picked up a rear rim to have cleaned and powdercoated. As I examine the hub area I see the dampers where the lugs fasten. As the powdercoat process heats up to 400 deg. F. I need to remove the dampers. Any tricks to this or is it a simple press out procedure. Also, is there a reinstall procedure or measurement? I would guess uneven installation would cause runout and wobbles. Also thinking that deteriorated rubber would cause the same problems. Just a thought on the decelleration wobble idea. JB
  18. I have a slight wobble in the front end, nothing serious, but I feel it if I take one hand off the bars. I know that one of my front rotors is warped, and physics tells me that a spinning disc that's not true will tend to lay flat and not run straight. Is that putting my front wheel out of balance and causing the wobble? No problem with the head bearings, forks, tire or rim itself, air in the forks and tire are good. I'm planning on replacing the rotor and getting the tire balanced, but any thoughts would be appreciated.
  19. OK I have had a new front tire mounted for 6 months on a spare rim. I aired up both front and rear tires on the 84. I aired up the new tire on the spare rim and changed it out Saturday. I little test ride Sunday seemed OK so now it was time for a test run through the gears to see if everything was OK and that clutch slippage issue was gone. The bike pulled strong through the gears but developed a front end wobble at about 110mph. I brought it back in and noticed the front rotor was hot on the linked brake caliber side. The pads are new and I think some dirt and grime got between the back of the pads and the caliber piston. I was only out for about 50 miles total and this evening I decided to check air pressure again before another ride and the new front tire was down to 10 lb. It dropped about 30 lb from the time I aired it up last thursday. That might explain a little wobble at 110. Now where is that leak I hope it's only a valve core.
  20. Just thought some folks might be interested in our progress on this situation. Carl and I had over the winter Avon Venoms installed on our scoots. He had the rear replaced and I had both front and rear. Both of us experienced a wobble at speeds over 110 Kms/hr or 75 Mph. The wobble gets worse as the speed increases. Carl talked to the people at Avon and they indicated that they wanted to resolve the issue and would pick up the costs. We have been to the shop that installed the tires and he also wanted to resolve the issue and is willing to do what it takes. I've had the Avons replaced with another set of Avons (one at a time) without success. Same problem. Now I have a set of Metzlers on and the problem is GONE. I know I'm going to get some flack because I chose Metzlers but really didn't want to go back to Dunlops because I liked the way the Avon handled better than the Dunlop. With the Dunlop I felt every crack in the road as well as expanded steel bridges and groove pavement. So far I really like the Metzlers. For many seasons these were the prefered tires and then one season some folks experienced peices coming out of the tires. In my opinion (and I worked for Firestone for 12 years in the plant making tires) it could have been a bad batch of rubber or some other component so I'm not worried at this point. So far so good and right now I LOVE my bike again.... Was on the hwy at 140 Kms/hr for an extended period yesterday without a problem. Could NOT do that with the Avons. I believe Avon makes a great tire but there is a compatability issue with SOME 1st gens. Wayne
  21. Put on new front brake pads and a new front tire yesterday. Thought I was done but there is a wobble now in the front end that got pretty scary the faster I went. Is it possible that the wheel is not in straight? Defective tire? There was no wobble with the old tire and brakes. Anybody have this same problem or ideas? How do I figure out what it is? :confused24:
  22. After new Avons, progressive springs, and other maintenance items including swing arm bearing removal and service, I now have an 80 mph wobble that I never had before. On a downhill it started as an oscillation then increased frequency before could react with the brakes but stopped when hauled down to 65 or so. Cautiously ran up to 75 on another straight stretch but was uphill, and no sign of it to that point, but wasnt looking toy with that demon until rechecked everything on the bike. The swingarm is as per manual assembly and torque values, and has no play, same with steering head bearings, front axle, rear axle etc. This bike has never acted like this at speed until this maintenance project. Always was a little saggy in the front with old springs and slighlty wallowing if pushed hard in turns but manageable, and had no high speed issues. Now its on rails in the turns when pushed hard ( which leads me to believe everything is mechanically reinstalled), but top end is scary. That being sad, wondering if the increase ride height on the forks could cause this. Like the Avons, cant be them, pretty sure anyway. Any frame geometry techies out there that would know if raising the front end would potentially cause high speed wobble?
  23. I have never had much experience with wobble but I would expect that there are some do's and don't should it happen. Let's just say for the sake of discussion that one is going down the road, say at a nice comfy 60 mph , jacks it up to 75 to pass and wow, it starts wobbling like crazy. I suppose the first thing would be to let off on the gas. How about breaking? Is the an excepted procedure? I ask because years ago I had a blowout, and not a clue what to do, I hit the break, wrong way and wrong time to find out, so I thought I would get the jump on it and ask about wobble.
  24. Folks, There's been lots of dialog about front-end wobble, but I have a peculiar variant which happens under very hard braking. As in "I think I'm going to hit this car and die" hard braking. It happened to me in November on the Interstate when traffic came screeching to a halt and I obviously wasn't looking ahead very attentively, and then last night at maybe 60 mph somebody pulled out RIGHT in front of me. Thanks to God that I didn't hit anything either time, or fall over with the wobble. In both cases, while on the brakes hard, I think I felt the front tire partially lock, and the front wheel and handlebars went into a violent wobble that was very difficult to control despite my death-grip on the bars. Last night, being the second time, it occured to me as I was braking that the front end would go crazy. I want to be clear that this is NOT a whole-bike weave, but a front-end wobble; I've felt both in the past. A little history if you're interested. I got my 87 with 45,000 miles on it and a lot of deferred maintenance. It exhibited a strong tendency toward the wobble at mid-speeds (30-45), but ONLY if I removed my hands from the bars. Light hand pressure always damped it out. It also had a touch of the high-speed whole-bike weave. Over the last 1.5 years I've done the following: -New tires - 38psi F, 40psi R -Progressive fork springs and rear shock unit -Greased and checked rear swingarm and linkage -Inspected, cleaned, packed and adjusted steering head bearings. I've tried a couple different preloads from the factory light setting to something a little tighter - no difference. -Checked wheel bearings. -Installed Superbrace Through all this the whole-bike-weave has diminished; what remains is minimal, self-damping and I'm convinced it's normal in a full-dress bike. The wobble is mostly gone, with the single biggest factor being the new front tire (which has been the case in the past for me on other bikes). I can remove my hands at mid-speeds and it doesn't automatically start wobbling as before. However, even now it only takes the slightest provocation to start one. If I hit a little rock with the front wheel, or tap one of the grips with my hand, it will start. The braking wobble feels like the regular front-end wobble, but the big difference is that it wobbles with my hands tight on the bars which it normally won't do. The wobble has one other manifestation. When doing u-turn excercises (from the MSF experienced class), at low speed with the wheel at or near lock, I feel a bit of that wobble even though my hands are firmly on the bars. I am sure these are all related; different manifestations of the same condition: 1) Mid speeds in a straight line, hands off bars, slight bump in road or tap on handlebars. 2) Higher speeds, hard on brakes, straight line, death grip on bars. 3) Low-speeds, tight u-turn, hands firmly on bars. Anybody else had these experiences? How'd ya fix it? Jeremy
  25. What's with the poll about the 1st Gen wobble? There is no selection for no wobble at all, which is the catagory that my bike fits into.
