  1. Well it looks like my first trip to Sturgis is a GO! Since my wife doesnt ride, I figured it is my duty to be an obediant husband and ASK for permission to go. Since I have all my work done she has given me the go ahead. Imagine that, 44 years old, around motorcycles most of my life, and LIVE in South Dakota, and it is my first trip out to Sturgis. Even though I live in SD it will still be a 4 1/2 hr drive. Have the trailer packed and ready, but it looks like monday before i head out. CANT WAIT!!!!
  2. There were three motorcycle fatalities in Branch County/Coldwater on Sunday. A man and wife, both aged 45, were killed when an 18 year old girl allegedly distracted by a cell phone pulled in front of them a few miles north of our home. A husband and wife riding a trike struck a deer and the husband was thrown from the vehicle and killed with his wife suffering significant injuries. There was a third accident also involving a deer/motorcyclist on Sunday with the rider surviving. Southern lower Michigan has an overabundance of deer to say the least. There are few days, if any, without and accident report involving a deer/motorized vehicle collision. For those of us who ride, the presence of deer and their unpredictable movements at any time of day or night is always on our mind. Bill
  3. Rode the Beartooth yesterday with wife on back and two Terriers in my modified Unigo trailer. What a great ride, was so much fun I rode it again in the opposite direction today. Being from the east I thought the Blue ridge and Deals gap were neat but you just have to ride the Beartooth. The bike ran a little rich above 9000 feet but there was never any power issue. When I rode it today i left wife and the mutts back at the RV and used some of the extra rubber on the sides of my tires. Unlike Deals gap, one can ride as foolishly as one wishes, remembering that your first error will likely be your last. It's a great ride and suggest that anyone who hasn't done it but it on there Bucket list
  4. We spent the day riding through the Black Hills area. We started out by riding through Custer State park. We had a great time there and saw huge buffalo herds. The were blocking the road at one point and we had to weave in and out of them standing on the roadway. A rather daunting task with a big bull standing 5 feet from you as you went by. We also encountered the wild (if you call them that) burros and had a great time feeding them apples. My wife remembered them from the last time through the park and this time she was prepared. She's been collecting apples off of the breakfast bars for the last few days. In addition we saw a few antelope. From there we went back by Mt. Rushmore and then rode up to Sturgis to get a t-shirt and to say we'd been there and then returned to Hill City via Spearfish Canyon. That's a nice ride. We drop my wife at the Rapid City airport on our way out of the area in the morning and then we break for home. Should be there by Sunday. Photos are posted at: www.traynorphoto.com/day12 SPOT Track: http://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=6473 It's been a great 2 weeks. Dennis
  5. I'm looking for a compact but comprehensive first aid kit for the Venture. I have one that's just to large 12"X 10"X 3". When my wife and I travel together that kit take up to much room. So what does everyone else have?
  6. I just ordered a Harbor Freight flatbed trailer a few days ago. I stopped by a few local dealers that sell trailers etc. Neither had anything i could use along the motorcycle line. Anyway the wife was less than enthused that I started in on the trailer thing in the first place. (she doesnt ride). Anyway one of the dealers just found a used flat trailer that was pulled behind a wing i guess. So the wife will be less than impressed that i bought another trailer. But it was only 35 bucks, and it is titled. Cant go wrong with this deal, so it looks like im gonna have 2 trailers. Guess I will have a smaller and a bigger trailer. This trailer has 8 inch tires which appear to be in good condition, and bearing buddies to boot. The harbor freight trailer is 12 inch tires. so a bigger box may be in order for that one.
  7. my daughter informed my wife and i that we are going to be grandparents, as she is 3 months pregnant. does that make me a "Grand Mother" now?
  8. Took wife down to river to fish on bike. First off the road leading down to parking area had deep ruts and washout area that would've love to have grabbed my tires, anybody who has lived near a state park knows what I mean. We finagal (sp) our way down to the lot and it looks pretty good for having been flooded a week or so ago so I start to position bike with trailer (had to carry poles, tackle box, cooler etc...) in a position that would be easy to pull right out. lo and behold rear tire drops down 3 inches. Now I mean like right now. Heck, wife stands all of 5'3" and she was flat footed while I appraised the problem and she held up the bike. Appears the sand on top was dry but underneath was like quicksand. It buried my 800 lb plus bike in a second. Detached the trailer to reduce weight on the rear axel and it was'nt gonna move. Luckily 2 guys showed up looking for a beer I think and pulled me backwards out of the mess. If they hadn't came along I wouldve been there till the sand dried or son-in-law came to get us. I've riden dirt bikes many times and pulled them out but none were as bad as this oversized paper weight. And that was my day. Oh yea, then the wife beat me catching fish. I think I need more beer. God Bless. mike
  9. After seeing Eagleeye's bike, reading everything I could find, pro and con, talking to the pro'ers and the con'er's, and thinking about it for the past year, I've gone and put a car tire on mine, a 2007 venture. The guy that put the tire on the rim said it was harder to get the E-3 off than to put the Kuhmo on. Said all he did was put a tube in the Kuhmo, aired it up really big and laid it in the sun (90 degree day) for a few hours. He then took the tube out and mounted the tire using Dawn to slick up the rim. Said he beat it a little but didn't really have a problem. The tire was so balanced, he din't have use any weights. I've ridden with my wife on the bike, about 150 miles on it at 42 lbs air. The roads were twisties for the most part. The tire did great! My wife said it felt smoother than the E-3 did over the same roads. Looking forward to the next 25,000 miles Cheers, Steve
  10. Hi everyone. Before I attempt to reinvent the wheel, perhaps someone on the forum has some info to help me. My daughter is 9 yrs old and yesterday I took her around our neighborhood on the bike, she loved it. In fact she loved it so much that she wants to take a longer country ride with me. I'm a little uncomfortable with her fit to the bike. Previously I installed some later model OEM rear foot pads for my wife. they sit about 4" lower than I'd like for my daughter to be comfortable. If I could find a few more of these used foot pads, I might be able to tig weld a nice machined block to them and be able to switch them out using the pin and clip to swap out for my wife or daughter. ( Of course other ideas welcome) Next, I'd love to be able to fabricate a few arm rests for her unless anyone knows of some available aftermarket options. Thanks, joe
  11. Well I am at Blackjacks house at the moment as I am leaving for the sand box tomorrow. And he has been kind enough to offer me a bed for the night and a ride to the airport. 13. Im a quiet individual from Northern Ontario But when I go to Don's Maintenance Days Someone else comes out of me It was great meeting you again Beer30 and finally meeting your lovely wife 24/7
  14. Well Dan and I made it back to south Ga about 1:30 this afternoon(Monday). We drove up in one day but took 2 to come back. Stopped off and saw a couple of sites along the way. Had a great time for the 2 days we were at Don's. Learned a lot about the bikes and the people that ride the bikes!I'd like to echo what a lot of others have already said. Thanks to Don and his wife Eileen for putting up with this crazy group of friends, brothers, and sisters. You are all the greatest!! I enjoyed meeting as many of you as I did. I hope we can all do this again next year.
  15. We are making a trip south to visit family in Lake Park, GA. Normally when we go there, wife and I head to Panama City for a day or two of diving in the Gulf. Thanks to BP, that probably ain't happening this year. Just talked to the dive shop and they confirmed oil over some of the popular ship wrecks and on the jetties at the state park. They are supposed to call me back on Weds and let me know if we are diving this weekend. Wife said, if we can't dive, we'll take the bike and do some riding. I may need a VR guide or 2.
  16. Good time great people. Thanks for the carb tune and all the things I learned Thanks to Freebird and his wife for hosting such a great event.:clap2:

    Hiyas

Hey everyone, Haven't been on in a dog's age but I was thinking that this was around Maintenance Day time and figured I'd pop on and say Hi. Recent goings on have taken all of my time so I guess I'd fill you in. The bike is sold...a guy named Tim Gary from Madison Wisconsin bought her and he and his wife are enjoying the heck out of her. I believe they're in in California about now. Sam and I became grandparents...my son and his wife had a lil boy in April...pictures to follow later. He's great and they're all doing well. Retirement rocks...gives me time to help take care of my folks who are getting a little older and slower. Anyways....have a GREAT time at Dons...Sam and I always really enjoyed it. I miss coming on here...and even though I no longer have a Venture..I will always consider myself a Venture Rider. Vin
  18. Ok, maybe not exactly "stink" but the wife is complaining and don't want to do no riding. I wanted to know if anyone else has had problems with what I can only discribe at en exhaust leak?? I can't seem to see any smoke exactly, but you can "smell" exhaust fumes coming from the area of the Y-pipe. Any advice would be great, becuase like I said, the wife doesn't like to ride now because she says the smell bothers her.
  19. Wife and I are planning a ride through the Catskills soon. Anyone have some tips for where to go,what see, where to stay?
  20. I need some help here. I just bought new matching helmets for the wife and I. Don't remember the brand right now. We used to wear those little beanies when we rode the "slick97spirit" (honda shadow, hence the screen name) . Anyhoo, the wife has always complained alot about helmet itch. With the new and safer 3/4 helmets she is really complaining to the point of wanting me to trailer on our trip to Myrtle Beach this summer. Says she is not sure she'll be able to take it that long. Surely there is something that can be done. I've tried everything I can think of. I've bought several different types of doo rags, both cotton and polyesther and nothing seems to help. I know someone on here has dealt with this at some time in the past and found the cure. I guess I can just tie her on, turn the intercom down to 0, and take off.........
  21. Can't help it, Gotta brag and show him off!!! This is the reward for not killing our young. Wife put a chair down to keep him outa the dining room. Didn't work He has trouble written ALL over him...
  22. Got my new links on yesterday, everyone was right. the bike feels so much lighter and more fun to ride. I wanted say to those that haven't met Squidley, what great people he and his wife are. I had never met them before and they treated me like an old friend. Hope my wife and I can go for a ride with them soon. Thanks again Squidley.
  23. 5 years ago my wife and I both owned vmaxes. Our riding styles changed, we do more touring. I traded mine in for a rstd, several years ago my wife went to an 1100 v-star. Well today she traded for a 09 rstd. She's really happy right now, got to go Mark
  24. Guest

    Thanks aamcotrans

Thanks aamcotrans for a great ride and get together while I was there, I enjoyed meeting everyone and learning about handcuffs 101 I wish your wife and long and rewarding career.. Again thanks.
  25. the wife and i were taking a nice leisurely ride on a familiar road - make a left at the intersection - got a decent lean going and the front tire moves out from underneath me about 3-4 inches - i then realize new tar snakes - and about that time it slides again - very unnerving feeling to loose the front tire - wife said she thought we had a flat. i know i've recently seen other threads concerning these snakes - they work well for the DOT but wreak havoc on us bikers.....
