  1. Hi to all I hesitated to post this but thought it might be of interest to some RSTD owners. I have posted about the whine and the help I got from using Motorkote in the engine and the post on this topic has many interesting comments. Now to my latest adventure..... Several weeks ago I was riding to work early am and the windshield completly fogged and misted over. I could not see anything in front of the bike. Yikes! I started doing some internet and forum searches and found that having a windshield as tall as the RSTD is can be dangerous in these conditions. I KNOW THIS IS A PERSONAL PREFERENCE AND I AM JUST POSTING MY OPINION! Everyone has to make their own minds up. How and when you ride will effect your preferences. I purchased a windshield off ebay for $24.50 that was supposedly damaged and was pleasantly surprised that it only had very minor scratches on it. This gave me a cheap backup to have in case I did not like the modification to the height of the existing stock shield. I determined for me that cutting off 4" gave me what I was looking for. It turns out that height was perfect and I am happy with the modification I did. (there are posts on how to do this and was very easy to do) When I took it for a long ride I immediately noticed that I had to really concentrate to hear the whine. It appears that the changes in the aerodynamics of the shield also acted as a buffer against the noise. Don't get me wrong the whine is still there but is now more of a normal engine mechanical sound that just seems to get swallowed up in the other ambient noises of air, engine and the pipes. I am amazed that there could be this much change from just lowering the shield. I can now see over the shield and don't experience much difference in the ride on the highway as far as buffeting is concerned. It is not the coccoon that it was but I feel as if I am still getting the benefits of the shield. This combined with the Motorkote has changed the annoyance of this terrific machine into something that I know is there but will be able to accept and deal with. Again, I am not trying to force my opinions on any of you and there is no garantee that any will experience the changes I got from this modification. I do believe that seeing over the shield offers a level of safety in certain conditions (which my New England climate gives me in both the early fall and spring each year) that can not be achieved with the stock height windshield. The bonus of the noise changing was completely unexpected! Just some ideas to throw in the cat box, it will either just lie there, get covered up or watch out the litter will fly! Have a great fall and be safe Dan
  2. I read that MotorCote does not mix with the oil thus making it a separate entity within the crankcase. My question : does it intermingle, float on top or heavier and go to the bottom ? The reason for the question is I changed oil and as an after thought I added 10 oz. of Motorcote. I noticed that there seemed to be MUCH more noise ( whine) at cruising (55mph or so ) and also somebody posted that an over fill caused excessive whine. So this AM I drained enough fluid out of the bike to bring the level to the top line in the glass. Now I wonder what I drained out and does it make any difference. ooops - 2 questions, sorry !
  3. So I went to check out the 03 Venture and too kit for a ride. The owner has a 92 Goldwing so he took me for a ride to follow him. A lot of curves etc I could not believe how nice it was!!!! Like I said I have owned a 01 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 classic, 3 different Honda VTX 1800 and a 94 Goldwing. This is a GREAT bike I know somw say it is op heavy but I did not think so. And as for the whine did not hear anything at all! It was a 250 plus mile ride back home and all I can say is I LOVE It!!!!!!!! The I bought the short windshield and the Sampson Fishtails mufflers I got around 45 miles per gal on the trip back. I never heard any of the whine the owner has a 92 GW with 93000 miles he said he could hear it but nothing I would think twice about! So from where I an now I'm one happy man!!!!!!!! http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s37/VictoriaVett/100_1686.jpg
  4. Thanks you RandyA and Squeeze your suggestions helped. My speedometer was off by 10 mph it dead on at higher speeds now at lower ones its just slightly off now. RandyA your speedometer fix worked very well my speedos pretty accurate now. Squeeze thanks for your suggestion on replacing the clutch pressure plate bearing I had a serious whine at all RPMS but now I just have it at 3000 rpm so for most of my ride if I stay off of 3000 rpm I no longer have the whine. Thanks to both of you.
  5. I've never ridden anybody else's 1st gen.. and I'm kinda new to the XVZ1200 Venture Royale's. I picked up this brown 85 April of this year and I have put about 4k miles on it.. I have done a ton of maintenance on it already, and changed all the fluids, cleaned carbs and synced etc etc. I have shrugged off the whine as just the nature of the bike but I am curious if I might possibly have a bearing going bad somewhere? Does yours have a whine?
  6. Well, I changed the oil - put Mobil 1 10w40 in and it didn't seem to change the whine. On Monday I went to our local Yamashop and spoke with the lead mechanic. After a short talk he said he would need to ride it to determine if the clutch basket change would possibly make a difference. The key was in it so off he went. About 15 minutes later he was back and said he would change the basket if that's what I wanted " BUT " he also said that I have one of the quieter Ventures. Now I realize that the shop is busy right now and perhaps didn't want any additional work but looking at it from a business sense, one would think they would schedule it to be done anyway because it's basically FREE money for them. What he did suggest is that the next time I change oil that I consider using 20 w 50 oil. That 'might' help somewhat he said but there are no guarantees. So yesterday I found that with a helmet on, the XM radio up to 14 - 16 and enjoying the scenery, I really didn't even notice a whine.
  7. I feel so special. Someone has bestowed a member award upon me. I guess it just goes to show if you whine about not having any enough someone will take pity on you. Thank you, I feel so fullfilled!
  8. I have a 2000 venture and it whines. Why do they whine? Can this be fixed?
  9. I've been blessed with an 06 RSTD with the traditional whine. Here's what I've noticed and maybe its been around and I got left out. I put the 21" clearview on for a week of riding and I began to notice halfway into the trip that the whining became very loud. After returning home I put my stock windshield on that has been cut down 4" and noticed that about 60% of the whine went away. Not that the windshield had anything mechanically to do with it but, I suppose the sound was echoing off the taller windshield. Maybe I'm crazy, but, it sure is alot quiter with the shorter windshield.
  10. Picked up a whine from the rear of the bike from 55 to about 70. Suspect the pumpkin pinion gear nut may have backed off. Has anyone tighten this? What did you hold the ring gear with?? Dealer has ridden the bike and tech says 'I don't hear anything unusual'. If he doesn't want to tighten the nut, I'm not gonna make him. Too many other things he can hurt in the process. And as long as there aren't any parts involved, I'd rather do it myself. Even thinking of switching to a VMAX rear end. Lots of folks have been happy when they have switched.
  11. I'm going to reference oil but I don't know yet if this has anything to do with the issue. I did an oil change about 900 miles ago and used Rotella 5w40 Synthetic. The light weight did concern me but most auto engines run 5w now and my Cummins actually gained 2.5 mpg using it. About 500 miles ago I went on a 300 mile ride. During the last 50 miles of the ride I noticed that I wasn't hearing the normal gear whine; it sounded different. The new sound was with me for the last 100 miles until yesterday. I was just getting up to cruising speed (about 70-75 mph) when I at first thought an ambulance was coming around me. I quickly realized that it was a whine coming from the bike. It was suddenly louder and higher pitched that it had been. Loud enough that I heard it at that speed and over the radio. It seems to be in the tranny as the pitch changes as I shift. I'm going to change oil again and either use Rotella Dino oil 15w40 or a 20w40/50 just to see if that helps. I have also been planning to do a Moly60 lube on the drive train. I did the last lube (before I knew of Moly60) about 4k miles ago using H-D bearing grease. So, any thoughts as to the new whine?
  12. Last Friday I changed out my Amsoil synthetic 10w40 oil and put in Amsoil synthetic 20w50. Thought maybe it would quieten the engine and the clutch whine. Around here, that oil costs $19.95/litre and it takes almost 4 litres with a new filter so, all tolled with taxes it came to $101 and change. To my dismay, the engine actually seemed noisier and the whine louder. I also noticed the temps on the gauge getting up to between 220 & 230. Yesterday morning I decided to go get some Shell Rotella T (non synthetic). I got the 15w40. I'm happy to report that even though I virtually wasted $100 on the Amsoil, the engine is quieter, the clutch whine is quieter, and the temps are sticking close to 210-215 on the gauge after a couple days running around the city in 30 degree celcius weather.. I drained the Amsoil back into the containers and kept it for some other future use. Think I'll be sticking with the Rotella T.
  13. I read in a previous post that the 09's do not have the clutch whine. Is this true?
  14. I have a 06 RSTD. Im getting alternator whine from somewhere on my frontend when i get to around 60mph and up. Varying intensity I dont know if theres a weak ground or something. Does anyone else hear a whine around the speedo when they get up that fast. The other part of this is I tried checking my grounds. SOMEONE PLEASE check With a VOM mV from the neg lead to the battery and the pos lead to the bars. Then turn to ignition. Everywhere on my bike shows gounded 2.5mV but the bars and tank show 200-300 mV. Dont know if this means anything. Dont know why the bars arent grounding as they're attached to the triple trees and those show good. I know 300 mV isnt crap but it may point an issue. Please any ideas im going on a long trip in a few weeks and, this sound is driving me insane. Thanks Jeremy
  15. Hi everyone. Great forum! I have an 86' with 54k. I've put 4k on it since I bought it last Oct 2008. The bike rules in every regard. However, since I've owned it it has always had a consistent whine from somewhere in the drivetrain. THe whine is always there. Wether accelerating, decelerating, coasting, engine on or engine off. In or out of gear. Clutch in or out. The first thing I did when I bought the bike was change the final drive fluid. The previous owner was pretty neglectful of the mantainence so I was suprised when the fluid that came out looked almost new. No flakes or anything. I filled it with synthetic and nothing changed. Having experienced a failed pinion bearing on my BMW k75 and also my jeep cherokee, I know what dying bearings sound like. This almost sounds like backlash out of whack. However, in my experience, bad backlash adj. sounds different on the drive or coast side and also depending on how hot the gears are. This is consistent all the time. For awhile I thought it was the front tire that was cupped all to hell but I just replaced the tires. It's not the tires. Definitely coming from down yonder. There's no clunkiness or slop in the final drive and the bike is smooth overall. Just a whine that sounds like a semitruck (not as loud though). It doesn't bother me too much but I'm getting a little paranoid. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
  16. 2001 RSV with 13000 miles. Whirl, whine @ all speeds even 20mph. Its not in the rear, but I can hear it louder near the front center of the bike. The noise quits when I pull in the clutch. That confirms a driveline issue. Sounds like a bad bearing, maybe the one at the front of the driveshaft. I thought by adding the Samson pipes I wouldn"t hear it but no luck. I replaced both tires & lubed the rear hub. This sound is driving me crazy. Anybody out there have success fixing this problem? Could it be the u-joint worn?
  17. Okay guys (and gals), I need to get my head around this issue about the 'whine' I keep hearing about. I'm about to make the closing deal on my 09 RSV and I'm getting really concerned so I'd like to ask a bunch of questions in regards to this and get some positive answers. 1) Just how serious an issue are we talking about here? I've heard that 'Hey, crank up the tunes and you won't notice it!' as an answer but that doesn't cut it. What if I just wanted to hear the wind whistling by instead and get lost in my thoughts rather then cruise to 'Born to be Wild' all day? 2) Just how common is this problem? I mean, percentage wise, are we talking 10%? 25%? 75%? 0.1% maybe? 3) I've read over and over again how Yamaha denies there's any problem but does anyone know what industry insiders say? Are they looking or have they found a solution? 4) To me it's obvious that the whine originates from the shaft drive but have V-Star and VMax riders reported a similar problem? What about other bike manufacturers such as Honda or Suzuki? Any other shaft drive riders reporting problems? 5) And finally, (this question goes out to those that actually have experienced the problem) most of you (just as I have) researched the bike prior to committing yourselves to buy it.........so if this problem is such a pain in the butt, how come y'all still went out and purchased one in the first place? I hope some of these questions get answered cause I have yet to see anything in regards to them and hopefully they'll help other future potential Venture buyers to come to a better, more informative decision. My deposit cheque has been cashed but I still may have an out. I truly appreciate the idea of owning a Venture but I need my fears put to rest before I close this deal. And as usual, I thank you all in advance for your wonderful input....... Bluez
  18. hi all kbay as me a question about if you could use a vmax clutch basket in our rsv's? we have never heared of the "whine" issue in the vmax. anyone have ideas? best reguards don c.
  19. Hey guys, help me out here. I haven't been around any other Ventures to compare my bike to so I need some help deciding if I have noise issues that can be improved on. My '07 has a fairly loud (at certain RPM's) but very tolerable gear whine. Or it sounds like a gear whine. I can't say that I have heard a "chirp". Now, what I call a "whine' is an even continuous noise. Where a "Chirp" is a series of spaced noises like a spot on a wheel or clutch basket rubbing on every revolution. I've read a lot of threads on this and it seems some people call chirps whines and whines chirps. LoL And some posts make me think that the 'I' basket fix will help the whine when it fixes the chirp. So, I have a whine that varies by speed. Will the 'I' basket do me any good? It would be warrantied but I don't want someone else tearing it apart if it isn't the fix for the noise that I have. Thanks for any replies!
  20. I bought a new 08 Venture from Motions in Marietta on 8/28/08. It was perfect for the first 1800 miles. I did the 600 mile service and everything went smoothly. At 1800 miles, I started hearing a whine coming from the rear and it got progressively louder as time and miles went by. At 2400 miles I took it to the closest Yamaha dealer to my house, which was Mountain Motorsplrts in Conyers, to get the whine fixed. (I had only had the bike 7 weeks) One week later, they called me and said the whine was just a characteristic of the bike because of straight cut gears and there was actually nothing wrong with the bike. They also said my tires were low on air (20 PSI fromt and 25 PSI rear) and they were cupped and that was part of the noise I was hearing. I didn't pick up the bike and immediatly called Yamaha's South East Reginal Service Manager and asked him to check out my bike. His phone number wasn't the easiest number to get and I ended up getting it from someone here on the forum because I wasn't getting anywhere with the dealer. I talked to him at about 9:00AM one morning and by 1:30PM he had already ridden my bike and had called me and said it had a bad final drive and they were going to install a new final drive. He too, confirmed that my tires were cupped and that was a small part of the whine. It took another week for Mountain Motorsports to repair the bike because they had to order the final drive. I picked it up last Saturday and it doen't have the loud gear whine but I can now here the tire whine although it is not near as loud as the gear whine was. I feel pretty sure Motions didn't check the air pressure when they serviced it as a new bike. I have never seen a bike loose 50% of the air pressure in 7 weeks with no leaks. I called Motions to see what they intended on doing about my tires and they basically said nothing because I was suppose to check the air pressure every day. I normally check the air pressure about every 6 -8 weeks. I have talked to several people who ride bikes to see how often they check tire pressure and I have gotten every answer from every week to whenever it looks low to the eye. I plan on riding the bike another couple of weeks to see if I loose any pressure. If not, I feel like it had to of left Motions as a new bike with low pressure and I am gong to try to get a little better response out of Motions. In summary, Yamaha has been great but the dealers seem to SUCK!!!
  21. you're gonna love this one "redneck"!!!!! i am thinking about trikeing my '86, using a 1951 HENRY J rearend! that way , i can have it BOTH WAYS!!!! i get to keep my first gen, and have the WHINE of the second gens!!!!!!! lol  just jt
  22. Just put on a set of Baron 4-2-4 Nasty Boy pipes. What clutch whine?! I can't hear a thing. :dancefool:Seriously, I love these pipes no matter what the neighbors say.:nanner:Thanks Sling.
  23. Hello everyone! I am new to the forum and to the VR. I have a 89 and yesterday it began to make a serious whine from seemingly the rear end when I ease of the throttle and the bile is down. No noise when standing at idle. It almost sounds like my tire was going flat but this is not the case. Just got the bike early this summer and really like it as opposed to the wngs I have traditionally ridden so I hope this is something I can get a handle on! Thanks for any help you could provide,
  24. i'm sure this has been posted before, but i'll give it a shot any how... as drivers do we only hear the whine or does everyone you pass hear it?:doh:
  25. I went on a ride to day 7:30AM about 48 degree's all of a sudden a loud whine, Puled in clutch still whine. Slowed down the bike so did the whine just be for complete stop the whine stop. Stared to go again no whine then about 20 miles the whine returned same as before pulled in clutch still whine just before stop it quit. Did this three times in 50 miles. Sound like from the u joint or drive shaft, I greased the final drive and the drive shaft when I put new tire on 11,000 miles ago. Went 150 Miles never happened again, I have a new tire to put on the rear so while it was apart maybe I can fix this if I new what it might be. Thanks, Dale
