  3. While at my dealers today he asked me if I wanted all 4 cams for a VMax new and in the box's. I asked how much and he said $150.00 for all 4. Does anyone here want them for their project bike I dont think I should make my bike any faster than it is.The cops are really looking at me hard here lately. No need to push my luck any more than I do. He said that they fit the 90 to 2005 V Max so if anyone wants them let me know and I will help you get your hands on them. Jeff
  4. Just wondering if anyone else thinks that Yamaha will take this sweet new motor developed for the VMax and use it as a basis for additional big displacement bikes like the Venture and Tour Deluxe, or even a more stripped down V-4 cruiser? Here’s a good article if you haven’t read much on the VMax yet: http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/2009-star-motorcycles-vmax-full-review-86751.html You know they hear us clamoring for a new Venture after 10+ years. As much as some of us love our 2nd Gens, we’re all well aware that it’s time for some improvements. It’s hard for me to believe they would sink all that development money into a new engine only to use it on a single, limited production bike. And while I don’t expect them to build a 200 HP Venture, I would imagine they could do the same thing as back in the 80’s and just de-tune it some for the touring bike. So, how long would it take to come up with a new Venture, and do you think they are already working on it? At what point in the development would they make an announcement? Not now, I’m sure, they don’t want to steal any thunder from the VMax, but if it were going to come out in 2010 or 2011 it seems like they would have to be already be working on it. Any thoughts?

    VMAX

Check out Motorcycle Daily for first ride on new VMAX. Yes it still has the kick in the pants acceleration at 6500 rpm. tew47
  7. Is there a difference between the VMax carbs and the Venture carbs? Are the VMax carbs larger? I know the diff between the intakes, just curious about the carbs.

    1st Ride of 2008...

Well this is a most unusual year for me. Usually my first ride of the season here in Western New York the temperatures are in the high 30's to mid 40's. Today the temps seemed to be in the mid-60's to low 70's and this is the first year I waited so long to get in my first ride of the year. Put on about 115 miles and the bike purred like a kitten. She was put away with stabil and the octane seemed just fine. I filled up and found that I got around 36 mpg (riding her hard). I did the VMax swap out so I was pleased with the mileage because I hoped on the Thruway and rode around 70-75mph. I took it up to 100 mph a couple of times to make sure the plugs stayed clean and the gas burned fast. The VMax swap out is the absolute best performance improvement you can do for the Venture with a modest investment!
  10. Think I found one for sale and was wondering if a 1998 will work with my 85 venture? I read that I will need the vmax driveshaft and the dust cover, anything else I should look for/prepare for?
  11. Just curious, I was in a dealership today and I saw a couple of Vmax on the floor and noticed the redline on the tach was around 9500 or 10000 rpm. I thought I had heard that the engines were very similar internally. What's inside a Vmax that enables it to rev 3000 more rpm? Or, is Yamaha just being real conservative with the 5 yr warranty? DT
  12. Anybody have any tips on how to get more power out of a '99 Tour Deluxe? And can a VMax engine go in these bikes? Thanks
  13. according to one of my magazines, a yamaha source said the new vmax is coming. yamaha wants to be sure it is exactly right before it's release. they want to out do the new b-king. i still say the vmax will be the test bed for the engine for the royalstar replacement all new tourer of the future for yamaha. the venture is becoming archaic by todays touring standards, and do to be replaced. look for 1800, v4, aluminum frame, fuel injection, advanced styling, and much more. this is probably why they haven't improved on the rsv. it's just holding over to be replaced by something totally new. thats just my guess.
  14. So far, I would say I have a keeper. The bike just 'feels' stronger. She moves easily through the gears. She responds when I twist her throttle. Everything just feels more comfortable. I don't know how else to describe it. I'm getting a little more noise, but I can still hear my tunes... no problem. As far as fuel mileage... First lets agree to limit any comments to the bikes rear end. I know I get bad mpg compared to many of you, but why that is would be another thread. Yes I keep the tires within 2 psi of max sidewall pressure. Changed the plugs... one was a little darker, but not bad. All were dry. I use SeaFoam several times a year. Chokes all the way in. Carbs are tuned regularly by me. Engine runs good and can haul my rear around faster than I have any business going. Maybe it's a combination of being as big 1up as most of you are 2up... of pushing a lot of air with a wide windshield and lower deflectors and a wide body... or flying the two 11x14 flags (a buddy said his mileage went down when his flags went up)... or riding at the speed limit +5mph (real speed, not yama-speed)... or not wanting to waste time getting from 10 mph to 75 mph... or who knows what else. I've fueled up 234 times since she first hit the driveway. I've averaged 31.5 mpg in 31952 miles. I also keep a running avg of the last 10 fill-ups. Over the winter, that avg has dropped from 32.5 to 29.5 now. I say all this so you can decide for yourself if you think your mileage may be affected in the same way as mine. Four tanks before the VMax rear swap - avg 29.57 Four tanks since the VMax rear swap - avg 29.47 Yep... I think it's a keeper.
  15. Here is some information on the new engine that will be used in the '09 model VMAX. It makes me drool to think of this power plant in a new Venture. http://www.starvmax.com/News/V-Max-News/Inside-the-Next-Generation-VMax.html

    Someday

Now I remember why I sold the Vmax. I used to ride a bonneville to high school. I'm thinking get that cabin up on the other side of the creek. Then a garage and one of these. http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/photos/2006models/2006-Triumph-RocketIII-Classic.htm
  17. Why do I not see VMAX rears for an '85? I though the VMAX came out in '85? Was the Venture and VMAX rear that different in '85?
  18. http://www.yamaha-motor.co.jp/global/entertainment/papercraft/realistic/vmax/index.html
  19. I know several Venture owners have installed Vmax powertrains into their ventures. It got me thinking, has anyone ever gone the other way and figured out a way to mount Venture bodywork to a v-max?
  20. Well folks, after riding in the mountains and even general highway speeds on the RSV, I am more than convinced that 5th gear is just too high on these bikes. I actually did an experiment on the way to Colorado. Bob Dakin was riding two up and pulling a trailer also. For a complete tank of gas, I kept my bike in 4th gear as opposed to him running in 5th. At the next fill up, I needed the exact same amount of gas that he did. I am convinced that the overdrive is just too high a gear and are getting us out of the optimum power band. So, this morning I ordered a VMAX rear for my '99 RSV. I ordered it from John Furbur at http://www.rmsportmax.com After I get it, I will do a pictorial on the install, just a direct swap, and will report how it works out. The units that John sells are ready to go, complete with the holes and etc. for your speedo sensors. I am excited about the change and have no doubt that it will be a great thing.
  21. Ran into a guy today that has an 85 VMax that he said has a rod knocking. I have an 86 crankshaft that is in good shape from a 1300. It is my understanding that the bore is the difference from the 1200 and the 1300. Does anyone know if this crank will work? I might sell him the crank, or try to buy the VMax. RandyA
  22. Well tomorrow the wife and I are headed to PA. to visit our daughter for a few days. She lives in Northampton which is right around the corner from Catasauqua, PA (home of SportMax). I've been communicating with John (the owner) the past few weeks on changing out my Venture to the VMax final drive next time we came down to visit our daughter...I've never liked the top end gearing in the Venture, so hopefully this will move 5th gear more to my satisfaction. Hopefully, the wife and I can make a couple of day trips Thursday and Friday before we come home Saturday. I'll try to give a report once I return on the difference. Later...
  23. Auto parts store. I said give me 4 NGK plugs for an 84 Venture. He said the book calls for an NGK 7EA. I said no the number has an 8 in it. He said here it is NGK 7EA for a 84 Yamaha venture 1200 engine. I said check the VMAX it takes the same plug? OK VMAX shows same thing NGK 7EA. My old plugs are NGK DPR8EA's. I'm going to take them back but just curious anybody running these 7EA plugs? They look identical in size
