  1. One of the things I wanted to do on going to Freebird’s MD was to take a little extra time and set up a route to take mostly secondary roads. By doing this, Linda and I set it up to only travel about 250 miles the first day, Thursday, and then about 200 the next day, stopping by Don’s on the way to Elyria, OH to check into our room. We started out from NE TN going up 23 thru VA and KY up to Portsmouth, OH, which are mostly curvy four lanes. We were early enough to be able to get into our room and take a swim, rest a little and then go out to dinner. After a great dinner, we walked along the levy on the river side then back on street side with all the murals. Very interesting way to present history of the area. With our walk being over a mile, it was nice exercise after being on the bike for about five hours. In putting this trip together, Linda and I found that we had about $85 on various Walmart gift cards left over from Christmas. This was a perfect way to use them up and have great memories. With this, I went on line and found Walmarts that have gas stations and was able to get almost all our trip gas by doing this along our way. Another thing that I had not really done before to any extent was to use a GPS on a trip. I have a cheap one that I bought off one of the sale things on the internet for about $39, plus $5 shipping and it worked great. What I did was to pick out some towns that I wanted to go thru and I would just load the center of town location. Then at about ten or so miles before I got to that town, I would call up the next town and that would help me get through or go around the town I had noted. I had found that by preprogramming, I could do about three touches on the screen and would be good to go. This also allowed me to get off on some of these secondary roads and not worry about going in circles. By doing it this way, it kept the GPS from trying to send me down the interstate. Friday was a great ride through the farm country on central Ohio and at times, it was like riding thru a moving postcard. There were the occasional farm tractors and school busses, but it was true Americana at its best. We were able to stop by Don’s and then get checked into our room and go to the Quaker Steak and Lube for a great visit and food. As many already know, Saturday was a great time, with some really neat folks and good food and helping out a little on some maintenance. I have to say that Don and Eileen are great hosts and have the perfect place for this kind of get together. I would have loved to have had the little camper and stayed there, but with the temperatures we had Saturday and Sunday, the air conditioned motel room was good. After going back to the room from Don’s, Linda and I rode up to Lake Erie and stopped at a couple of parks. It was interesting as I had not been there before, but flown over it some in a past job, but I was surprised at the lack of restaurants along the waterfront. Sunday morning, I rode over to Don’s to see a few off and visit again. This ended up being a lay around day and riding the area a little more. Monday we trekked down the middle of the state to a room we had reserved west of Charleston, WV. Again, a great meal and good rest and then the final leg back home on Friday. All in all, I can not think of a thing I would want to change other than maybe a little lower temperatures, but, we did not see a single drop of rain. We rode some beautiful roads, did not have any close calls and the bike ran absolutely perfect for a little over 1,200 miles. This says a lot for a bike over 28 years old with over 143,000 miles on it. I was a little surprised at the gas prices in that area as we have gas at about $3.40 at home and we saw $4.03. I truly feel very blessed to have so many friends on this site, have an antique bike that I am proud of that does so well and to have a very special person in my life that loves to ride and enjoys the back roads of America as much as I do. Life is very good. RandyA
  2. What is "normal" temp for a first gen? My bike likes to run just below the red on the stock gauge. The fan comes on and off like it should. On the highway it runs a little cooler, but not much. Do I need to flush the system out again? If I just cruise around town my legs will get reel warm reel quick. It is WAY worse running the side covers than without. Any ideas? Shaun
  3. I was on a PGR mission in Columbia, Ky. yesterday Sat. (5/28/11). Spotted 2 RSV's riding together out of town on hwy. North 55 about 11:20 local time. About 1 hr later they rode back through town past the funeral home we were standing post at. Was it you, were you just passing through or are you local and I haven't met you yet? C.R.
  4. crockettrider hope you are ok from the storms that hit your town last night. reguards don c.
  5. We got home from picking up the 07 Tour Deluxe I purchased. I didn't ride it home due to some sinus junk but had an opportunity to zip around town a bit tonight. I am surprised at how much lighter it is than my Ventures. I can see myself riding in town more than before. I haven't had it on a road so I can't compare. I need to get a new left side lower as he leaned the bike up against something and took a chunck out of the lower. If you see a black one on Ebay that matches an 07 please let me know. Other than that the bike is like new with 1200 miles and warranty good through September of 2014!
  6. Time for the right eye this time! Sure will be great to have two eyes matching in brightness again!! Of course I will appreciate your prayers! Looking forward to another few weeks off from work! If you're in town please stop by, I like company. Hopefully we wil have a couple of rainstorms followed by sunny and warm temps!!!!! I wanna ride!
  7. We had a great trip to meers. When we got there they where lined up out the door and down the street, so we headed for Holy City, what a neat place. Then on over to Mt. Scott, the highest point in Oklahoma. Gunny & Robbie had to head back home so we pressed on to get the Waurika Dam. This was my last check point on my dam tour. After getting my picture we headed for Ardmore to get a room. Got there, no rooms available in town so we headed for Davis with a stop at Turner falls. No rooms in Davis, so we headed for Sulpfur, you guessed it no rooms. The next town was Ada. Since this was 120 miles from home we had dinner and home we went under the “BIG MOON” 586 miles for me. I got home at 11:30PM. Here is the photo show of the trip http://www.photoshow.com/watch/fE2Cg9cP?source=em_ps_show_owner Phill

  9. How many are using a smaller bike for daily in town quick trips? I have been thinking it would be nice to have a little bike for in town running and quick trips close to home. Id love to have a small vespa typwe scooter as our town is really small and a helmet is not required. Just thinking outloud.
  10. A little jaunt on sunday took me to Popeye's home town. I've never seen him though!
  11. There have been a lot of this type of thing circulate as spam emails in recent years but I can vouch for this one. My cousin's daughter's 2nd grade class is looking for postcards! If you can help by sending one from your area, that would be great and very much appreciated. Thank you for anything you can do! Here are details: Nola's class is asking people to send them postcards from other places. They are going to read the postmark and label that town on their class map. Then they will read the postcard and find out who sent it. If there is information about the place, the town or the state they will learn about that too. If you have an opportunity, could you send a postcard to: Mrs. Larson's Class Clay Central/ Everly Box 110 Royal, Iowa 51357
  12. An illustrated bailout plan that just might work... It is a slow day in the damp little town of Oberlin, Ohio. The rain is beating down and the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt and everybody lives on credit. On this particular day a rich Venture rider from Texas rides into town, stops at the local hotel and lays a $100 note on the desk, telling the hotel owner he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one to spend the night. The owner gives him some keys and, as soon as the visitor has walked upstairs, the hotelier grabs the note and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher. The butcher takes the note and runs down the street to repay his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the note and heads off to pay his bill at the supplier of feed and fuel. The guy at the Farmers' Co-op takes the note and runs to pay his drinks bill at the pub. The pub owner slips the money along to the local prostitute drinking at the bar, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer him "services" on credit. The hooker then rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill to the hotel owner with the same note. The hotel proprietor then places the note back on the counter so the rich traveller will not suspect anything. At that moment the traveller comes down the stairs, picks up the note, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, pockets the money and leaves town. No one produced anything. No one earned anything. However, the whole town is now out of debt and looking forward to the next Venture rider maintenance day with a lot more optimism. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how a bailout package works...
  13. Is there anyone in Athelstane, WI that can look at a 99 Venture for me? The fellow selling it seems to have issues getting pics uploaded, plus there is no substitute for someone to actually get there and have a look. We have a few days until the fellow gets back in town for Christmas, so theres no rush. Brian
  14. Went on the Make A. Difference ride this morning. It's an annual ride to raise money for our local spinal and rehabilitation hospital. nice way to pay back for the care they gave me on several occasions. Got to take one of the nurses for a ride to a motorcycle festival in a country town. This town is recovering after deverstating bush fires, so nice to be able to inject some money into their local economy...and raise some at the same time
  15. We came back from our trip to St. Charles MO. and all seemed well. Bike was getting 37mpg hwy. Went over 2,000mi hit some rain at times but all seemed OK, Let the bike sit for a few days in the garage and went out to ride to town noticed that it had no power and at one point it felt like it was going to die but went ahead and rode it to town. Went by the shop and picked up my Temp.gun and did some readings on the exhaust side and here are my readings. EXHAUST READINGS #1 410'F #2 135'F #3 89'F #4 130'F By the readings I'm running on one good cylinder? I bought some more plugs and changed them out, all four plugs were black with carbon but not wet looking. Even after new plugs installed still have same reading on exhaust. I would appreciate any help you guys can give me as where to go for further diagnostic.? Carbs - wiring - ? Buddy
  16. could anyone tell me what the voltage should be at the battery is when bike is running. 08 RSTD I would think it is the same as a venture. 1000 miles on bike stopped to get gas 30 miles from home headed out of town went to start bike and all I got was click click. So there I was got a push start it fired up I took off down the road stop 40 mile later and it started right up. and did all day long. Took bike to dealer when I got back to town and they said it was a loose negative cable. I find that hard to believe when it seemed to charge back up. they did say it only had 33% charge on it but battery did check out OK.
  17. Another dumb question but i'm tired of searching online... I'm still figuring all this stuff out about this new (to me) 84venture. I need a new tire. No bike shops in my town...blah blah blah... SO: when shopping for a rear tire...What size should I be looking for and what should I expect to spend for the tire and install (on average). thx y'all a
  18. While poking around on the web this morning I ran acrossed this Hotel in France. http://www.bikershotel.it/citta/Chalais/1/ Must be a distant 'Chalais' cousin.... I'll have to drop in and say Hi the next time I'm in town....
  19. I'm sure this info is buried in the tech section, but does anyone have an answer for the night ride glare I get off my 2nd gen venture screen? Surely there must be a film of something we can stick/spray on to cut down the glare. In town its almost impossible to ride without me considering chopping down the screen, something I don't want to do as it may affect my pillions ride. Cheers
  20. today is the http://riverroar.com/ yep all day just a few blocks from the house kind of cool EH!
  21. OK....I'm going to tell the story and THEN we can discuss punishment. There is a certain Canadian member here whom you just can't be nice to. The member in question has long wondered about the performance of the Second Gen Venture as he plans to replace his bike at some time in the future. So, out of the kindness of my heart, I asked this member if he would like to take my '99 on a test ride. He was pleased to do so. I got busy and have no idea how long he was gone but some time later I got this telephone call. It went something like this. Him: Hey Don, uh...do you keep proof of insurance and registration somewhere on your bike? Me: Yes, it should be in the trunk. Him: Well, what do the cops around here usually ask for? Me: That is usually all they need. What is going on? Him: Well, I was going through that first town that you told me about, the first one you come to when you turn South on 58. Me: Yes? Him: A green pickup pulled out in front of me just as I was going into town. Me: OK. Well, are you all right? Him: Yes, I'm fine...but the bike...... Me: Well, you are OK, that's the important thing. Exactly where are you? Him: Just as you come into town, across from that DrugSav. Me: OK, well I'm on my way, should be there in about 10 minutes. Him: OK. So, I grab my keys and head out of the garage to get in my car and HERE HE COMES RIDING DOWN THE DRIVEWAY. LAUGHING LIKE HECK. Now...THAT was a BAD joke. Cruel and unusual punishment. Bad Canadian...BAD BAD CANADIAN. So...should I ban him or keep him around long enough to get EVEN. I'm not saying who is was but his initials are SWIFTY.
  22. Ok Don Did you get the group a spot in the line up for the Parade on Sat. at noon ?????? lots going on tis weekend in town search for Oberlin Ohio Juneteenth Oberlin, Inc. hope link works
  23. Just noticed that you live in Opelousas! The hubby and I have been to LA 2 times, and both were to your town!!! Our partner company owns Evangeline Downs and they brought us down there to show us the property. Both times were in July and it was so hot and humid, I about died! One of the guys that led us around on a tour had a crawfish boil party at his house. I had never eaten it before, but I was brave enough to eat the head off! Anyway, it was about 95 degrees that day with about 120% humidity.....he had the COLDEST beer I have ever drank in my life! It was a great party and a memory I will always treasure! Just thought it was funny when I saw you lived there and that's the only town I've ever been in down there, except for spending a few days in New Orleans.
  24. Not quite Venture related but big motorcycle news. It has been all over the News here in Milwaukee the home of Harley-Davidson Motorcycles, that they are considering closing all of their plants and leaving 1400+ Wisconsin workers without a job. In the paper today it said that they went from a record $1+billion profit in 2006 to a $75million loss last year, and this year looks worse. It may just be the "usual" union breaking tactic of threatening to close the plants and leave town if they do not get major wage concessions and/or tax incentives. We shall see what happens in the near future.
  25. i just bought a few weeks ago, an 88 white royal and i just love it. i have a white 04 2nd gen that i thought needed some company in the garage. i really havent driven the 04 since i bought the 88. now i know what you 1st gen guys are talking about, but anyway before i start a fight here is what i need some help with. i was riding last weekend with a strong head wind i was was going 70-75 and the temp gauge started bouncing down, got out of the head wind did not do it again. on monday it would do it at 50-60 and quit working, but, in town or at a stoplight, it would work fine. today it wont work until i am almost stopped, if i get on the front brakes hard to stop it will work but as soon as i take off it will quit.i stopped in a parking lot pushed down hard on the front end and it worked but as soon as the shocks rebouned it quit. will my cooling fan still work in town if the gauge doesnt work? what i really want to know is in simple laymans terms where should i start looking for the loose wire. i dont want to take it to the stealer and pay for some kids education on a bike that he has never worked on. i sure someone on here can point me in the right direction, but, i dont want to start really tearing up everything on the bike.right now everything else works flawlessly, the air ride, cruse control,cb,radio, and i dont want to create more problems for myself, or if somebody knows a good mechanic that they could recommend i live about 1 hour south of mpls. mn. thanks
