  1. Saw a Kaw today. A 1969 120 with chrome fenders and red and white I think. Been in basement for years. Lot of surface rust on chrome but think it would clean. Tank is crap but it is getting enough fuel thru it to fire. Tries but won't run. Be a good project. What is it worth???
  2. Replacing the coolant, filled to the top of radiator, ran it, let it cool, filled to top again, ran it, still needs more. How do you know when you do not need anymore? When the coolant gets hot, I assume it bubbles to the overflow tank under the seat, but how does the coolant in the overflow tank get back to the radiator? there is only 1 tube to the overflow tank.
  3. long story boring ,the wife and i have rented a GW GL1500 Aspencade for 10 days, for our trip back to Scotland . so i'd like to know from some of you Wingers, about the range of these bikes, on a full tank of gas (petrol). the owner says its a small tank but it gets around 250 miles . now im thinking thats pretty good but i'd like to know if thats about right .we're gonna be traveling in mostly rural areas(single track roads mainly) ,down to Yorkshire then back up to the Western Isles ,Skye and Lewis . so in the grand scheme of things that aint that many miles, but if youve ever seen some of these areas ,theres a lot of scenery(and rain) but not much else.not good places to run out of gas(petrol) .so any and all info etc would be appreciated.
  4. will allow you to input your own routes? most threads have comments about the turn by turn voice directions. i like mapping out my own route and would like to download that into a GPS. Then get the turn by turn directions without having to look at the tank bag window.
  5. Can a tank bag be put on a 2009 RSV?
  6. Is there any aftermarket add ons that will give me an actual fuel gauge without having to drill a hole in my tank? I hate having nothing else than the idiot light.
  7. Mini Tank Cover,A soft leather cover that attaches at the base of the gas tank Here its costs $76 out the door Any wher cheaper in the States You'd know
  8. I have a whole set of fenders, wheels, side covers and tank plus alot of misc. parts off my 96 Royal Star. I have another set I had custom painted and don't need these now. They are blue and white. The tank is new and has a decal I designed on it. Before I put this stuff on EBay I thought I would let the club know. I will sell it all for $375 plus freight. I will be selling individual parts on EBay so this is a deal. Reno 715-459-2570 pixx@charter.net
  9. Looking to remove the strip of vinyl on my 06 venture gas tank. Is this a big job? looks like a lot of glue, but a heat gun should do it. I'm going to be putting on or replacing it with a Hopnel tank bib tux with pouch. I don't want it to sit to high off the tank. Also will the black plastic upper tank piece(around the ignition) fit tight enough without the stock vinyl. thanks:think:
  10. i was wondering if beer 30 is still making tank bras? i may be in the market. steve
  11. The 5 gallon aux tank has been received, fitted, and mounted. My 3 gallon aux tank is now boxed up and ready for the next owner that wants to extend their riding range. This tank is a cylinder 8" dia x 16" long with a vented gas cap. It has the fuel line fitting already installed in the bung, an internal baffle, and comes with mounting straps. You can see the design at www.tourtank.com. The mounting used on my Venture was on a shaped board that was bolted to the passenger grab rails (need to remove the pillion seat). Easy to plumb into the main fuel line. All you will need is the mounting board, (4) U-bolts, (4) 1/4-20x1.5" bolts with insert nuts, fuel line, inline fuel filter, a ball valve, brass T-fitting, about 6 feet of 5/16" fuel line, and (6) hose clamps. It works well with gravity feed so no aux fuel pump is required (therefore, no electrical wiring at all). All these components can be purchased at any auto parts and/or hardware store (except the mounting board - you will need to make that - I can provide a pattern). This 3 gallon tank will extend your range about 100 miles depending on your riding style. I am entering some Long Distance riding events this year and needed to maximize my range. The max fuel load allowed in Iron Butt Association approved events is 11.5 gallons (5.9 in stock tank + 5 in new aux tank is close enough without going over). There is an ad in the classified. Ride safe, Ride long. RR http://2000rsv.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Misc/1000702/530232780_kAXFy-S.jpg
  12. There is an estate auction at our next door neighbors Sunday with an 89 Virago 1100 on it. It's got a bad back tire, the auctioneer doesn't know if it will start and it's got the derndest thing on the gas tank. It's a relief of a precious moments figure on it (I know, I know.....don't mean to speak ill of the dead, but he was an odd ball to say the least) but.....I'm hoping I can get it for about $200.00. I'll put a new tire on it, get that #%*# thing off the gas tank, have it repainted for $200.00. Hopefully the battery will just need charging. When I get done with it, I hope to have a match to mine. Wish I had a pix to show you how ugly mine was before I had it repainted. This bike is quite a bit older than mine, but the style is pretty much the same. If I get this thing....I'm going to have to post a pix of what that gas tank looks like. Anyway...this is how I'm hoping to have it look when I get done. Wish me luck!!
  13. wow, I did a beautiful job with the carb synch yesterday. Today I barely got 130 miles from a tank of gas traveling an average of 75-80 mph on the highway.. wow.. now THAT sucks.. =( We had high winds today, but mostly coming from quartering rear, average temps of 45'F.. I know the carb synch was spot on as the buzz in the mirrors is gone and the bike rode smoother than before.. But man, I would typically get 160 miles on the tank before needing to fuel with some to spare, but today, I was down to the last bar or two on the fuel gauge.. that's hard to take.. Do high winds make THAT much of a diff on fuel mileage? I know running at higher speeds will cause it to suck..
  14. I'm looking for help. I just purchased an 82 Kawasaki KZ 550 LTD for my wife. It's her starter bike. Bike has 6900 origional miles but has been stored for over 20 years. It starts but needs a carb cleaning among other things. I've removed the carbs but I'm not sure what to do with the tank. It has some rust but not bad. How do I go about cleaning it? Thanks for any help, David
  15. Well, my 5 gal aux tank arrived today, my Russell Day Long seat arrived last week, completed all the maintenance (other than a Carbtune and brake fluid flush), and am ready to start the riding season. The aux tank fit beautifully on the 3 gal mounting board. Need to pick up a brass fitting and some fuel line at Fleet Farm, but other than that, the ride is gtg. I did find with the aux tank on the pillion seat, I couldn't get the trunk open. However, I removed the passenger backrest and could get the trunk almost to the locked open position. Just need to put some bolts with rubber washers in the mounting holes and I will be done with the tank mounting. I will post some pics this weekend. I am ready to go burn lots of dead dinosaurs! With the aux tank, should get 350 to 400 miles per fillup. Sorry, I'm rambling. Time for bed. RR
  16. I'm trying to post this poll based on my recent carb rebuild. Finding rust dust in the carbs. I then emptied the fuel tank. There was a thin scale of rust in much of the tank. I cleaned it good w/rags on end of "rod". I have had my '87 VR since '89. Over the years 90% of the time when the bike is parked over night...the tank is full. Rust is a result of the new ethanol fuels that have found their way to my area about 8 years ago. So it's going to be a issue for all vehicles. Especialy 2 wheeled. OK, all of the choices are based on just cleaning w/rags. NOT etching and sealing the tank. FYI, fuel filters will not catch this stuff. Which one of these makes the most sense to do or not to do after general cleaning ? Should you feel the need...You can choose more than one item in the poll. Thanks in advance...
  17. I have posted about this problem but I'd like your opinion. I have a gas leak. It appears to originate on the right rear carb area. The gas runs down the rear cylinder wall onto the crankcase breather. It leaks less than a teaspoon. A full tank of gas makes the leak worse and the leak disappears when the gas tank is at about 20%. Recently I changed the plugs, all were very good except for the right front cylinder which was gas fouled. Don't know if that's related to the leak. I took it in earlier to a mechanic for this issue and got it back with new jets, one was definitely corroded green, so it wasn't a complete waste. I took it to the same mechanic who says it is the needle valve/pin stuck. I looked around and found one reference to the needle valve sensitivity to alcohol and having the valve switched to stainless. Do you think he's right? I don't have much confidence in this guy because he didn't fix it the first time. The nearest certified Yamaha mechanic is 70 miles away. I should just bite the bullet and take it apart my self, but having never done it before I am not 100% confident.
  18. Got my notification that my 5 gal aux gas tank is on its way. WoooHooo. Should provide 350+miles between stops (IB rules state you must stop every 350 miles for certified rides - however, not rallies). The Russell Day Long saddle is also in the big brown truck. Should be a good weekend (if I can get the bike back together). Once the tank gets here, I will see how it fits on the current 3 gal tank mounting board. If it doesn't fit, I will post the 3 gal aux tank with the mounting board for sale and make a new one for the 5 gal unit. If the 5 gal tank does fit on the mounting board, I will post the 3 gal for sale with a mounting board pattern only. If you are looking for 100+ mile extended range, keep on open eye for a post on Saturday. RR
  19. Im starting some serious spring cleaning on my First Gen and having trouble getting some of the covers/body pieces off so I can clean under them. Before I go all "He-Man" on them and break something....I thought I'd ask, "is there a guide somewhere on how all the covers and false tank and body covers come off?" Otherwise I'm afraid I will be posting asking whats the best epoxy to use? Any advice would be welcome!
  20. I have a friend in dire need of a fuel tank for a 1987 Yamaha Virago XV700ct. If anyone has one, or knows where I can get one, let me know. He dropped the bike on the trailer, and all it hurt was the tank, but it is creased bad.
  21. Went to take the tank off this evening; one front side Allen head bolt removed with ease; the other one stripped like butter. Now what? Can't grip the head with vice grips; tried three different styles/size with no success. Cutting off the head would do no good because the bolt sticks out about 1/2 inch into the gas tank mount. The gas tank mount doesn't seem to have much give to pry it from the bolt if all that was removed was the head. Any ideas?
  22. OK, LD rally season is upon us. I am reviewing my setup and realize a bigger/better aux fuel cell is needed. The IBA rules allow up to 11.5 gallons to be carried on the bike at any time. With the stock tank of 5.9 gallons, this allows 5.5 gallons extra to be carried. My current aux tank is 3 gallons. I am going to upgrade to a 5 gallon tank (don't want to push it and get disqualified due to tolerances). Also, the 3 gallon tank does not have a vent (although it appears to have a vented cap) or a grounding lug. Both these items are required to run in an IBA sanctioned event (or an event that uses the IBA rules). These features are not required to use this tank to run a SS1k or any of the other 'self documented' IBA rides. Only required for the IBA Rally and related organized rallies. Therefore, the current 3 gallon tank is up for sale. It works great to extend your station to station range 50% (to about 300 miles). It is very easy to plumb this into your current fuel line using a simple brass 'T' available at any auto parts store. The tank has an internal baffle to keep the gas from sloshing about. The pictures show the tank mounted on a board with a check valve. I would like to keep the board and check valve (and hose) since the new tank will be the same style - just bigger and with the vent and grounding lug. I will be glad to provide a pattern for the construction of new mounting board. The mounting bands are included. $125 including shipping CONUS. $100 if no shipping required (would prefer this since I suspect UPS will be kind of squimish about shipping a used gas tank). Tanks for looking:smile5: RR
  23. I'm very new to RSV's. I did a search and didn't find what I was looking for. And looked at Venture history. After +/- 2004 did the fuel tank ever change size or shape? Is there somewhere that shows tank emblems and what they indicate?
