  1. I finally think i have an issue thats been bugging me on my 85 for about 2 years. It has been a very intermittent starting issue that would happen 2 or 3 times a season, usually when the bike was hot and/or sitting in sun. Checked over everything everytime and found nothing wrong, wait for a cool down and it would start......until in a moment of complete frustration:whistling: as it was making me late for work I just started pressing all buttons and switches, and when i sounded the horn, the bike started! http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif as I was still holding the starter!........this set me to checking grounding points and reseating all connections I could think of, but the bike still very occasionally would still not start except by hitting the horn button while holding the starter engaged. Things changed while in Drumheller a couple of weeks ago as I had 3 incidents that day where the bike didnt start, but, the horn trick did its thing, but it was unusual as it never happened that often before. Anyway on the way home we rode thru about an hour of steady rain and the highways were wet for a large chunk of the 8 hour ride home, but the bike ran fine. The next morning after getting home, the bike wouldnt start at all (even with the horn), so I tried to reseat every connection i could think of and liberally sprayed wd40 into the sidestand switch and any connector I could see thinking it would force the water out. The bike started right after that, so I thought i was good and figured it had to be side stand even though my dash showed the stand engaged or not. Anyway bike continued to be undependable starting but now the horn doesnt start it, and its happening much more frequently. Finally, while stranded with a bike that didnt start a couple of days ago I noticed that my clutch switch wiring harness looked like it was twisted and the was loose on the handlebar and the weather boot wasnt covering the connection point totally, so I pulled it apart and cleaned it right there and the bike immediatly fired right up and hasnt given me any issues since.(and I have tried about 50 starts or more) My working theory is that the horn switch wire is in that part of the wiring harness and somehow I had a bad connection inside there and sounding the horn somehow allowed enough current through to complete a circuit. I dont know why i hadnt thought to check that area before, but i was so sure it had to be a ground or my side switch. It works now, and I am fairly sure that Ive fixed the issue, but I am still keeping my fingers crossed. Brian
  2. Picked up my 2008 Goldwing with 865 miles on it from outside White Plains, NY this past weekend. Flew out from Detroit Saturday afternoon and took possession that evening. Stayed in a hotel that night, started off Sunday morning about 7AM. Didn't start off so good. 2 1/2 hours of 1 mile visibility fog and 57deg not fun on a new bike. Pushed out 360 miles, not bad considering the start I had that morning, the new to me bike and an ongoing intestinal trac malfunction. Monday started out very good west bound on I80, left about 8AM 68deg and semi sunny. about an hour into the ride I thought it looked like it might rain. Pulled off to dhon my rain gear and as I was zipping up the jacket the drops started and continued for the next 2 hrs. Stopped for fuel and the rain was replaced with a 20 MPH or so crosswind for the next 2 hours. Finally made it to I280 north just south of Toledo, OH. Ah, wind at my back what a nice ride. Made it home about 1:30PM a total of 686 miles later. I have to say that I really like my RSV but my first impression of the Wing is I love it. I have to add some bling, comfort items, safety items and other stuff but I'm sure I'll continue to love it. It has the audio / comfort, NAV and ABS on it. I used the NAV and although it is somewhat cumbersome (touch screen would be nice) it functioned flawlessly. I had no idea where I was in White Plains. The person I bought it from punched in the hotel address and I followed the instructions. When I left the hotel I punched in Toledo, OH and followed that. Fortunately I didn't "have to test" the ABS and didn't want to. Now that I have some miles on it I'll test them the next time I'm out (if it stops raining). The slow speed handling & balance is much better IMHO than the RSV, the power is remarkable and smooth. Fit and finish excellent. Electronics / audio are awesome. Little things like the horizontal valve stems just add to the quality of this bike. Thanks for listening, Jim
  3. This is a long story: I want to start by saying that I have been getting worse and worse MPG's lately. I used to get about 42mpg and am now down to about 30. I have changed plugs, oil, filters and have done a carb sync at idle and at higher rpm's. I have also tried ethonal free gas and nothing seems to help. Okay, yesterday I changed the fuel filter although it probably didn't need it. Today I started my bike with no problem and rode it to work without any issues.(15 miles) I came out of work this evening and when I walked up to my bike I could smell gas. I pulled out the choke and turned the key. I could hear the fuel pump trying to get gas but it kept running and my yellow light that usually lights up during the fuel pump prime wouldn't come on. I pressed the starter and the bike wouldn't start and the bike acted like the battery was dead. I tried this 3 times and got the same thing each time. Just for the heck of it I turned the petcock to reserve and tried again. The fuel pump sucked up the gas and the bike started right up. My first reaction was that I was leaking gas and was almost out. I drove to the closest gas station and while doing so I slid the petcock to on while riding. Within a minute the bike was starving for fuel so back to reserve I went. The bike smoothed out. When I got to the gas station and filled up I was amazed when it only took a little less than 3 gallons which would mean that I wasn't any where near reserve. Once the bike was filled I put the petcock back to the on position and the bike started right up and ran fine all the way home.(15 miles). However my wife just told me that the garage smells like gas....Any ideas
  4. Pulled the mufflers off my bike tonight to replace a tire. Loosened the clamp bolts, gave the left one a wiggle and came off as normal, did the same to the right started pulling on the muffler and all the guts started coming out. I've always used anti sieze on the pipe. It looks like the inside collar on the muffler is missing compared to the other one. Has anyone else have this happen. I'm taking it to the bike shop in the to see what they say. It should be warranty as it's an 08.
  5. Rode my 89 VR for an hour this morning then let it sit for an hour. Started it up again to to ride and it started right up but made a sawing or hising sound. I hit the stop button to kill the engine and it stopped. Started it up again and made the same noise. I listened for a couple seconds and decided that it is the starter that is not disengaging. Shut if off and started it up and this time the noise went away. My VR has 25,500 miles on it and only 1500 miles is mine. The 1st 24,000 was from South Lake Tahoe and in the winter months it was a garaged. And at my home it is also garaged. Any suggestions of what to check or to clean?
  6. I've just run out of time folks. I was working on a design and have it pretty much done but by the time I post here for orders, get the totals, get them ordered and etc., I just don't have time to get it all done. Sorry about that. The past couple of months have just been WAY to busy for me. I promise to get started on the earlier next year and we will have them again.
  7. Dont know how to do a search for this question so will ask instead. Started the royal star up today, pressed the clutch lever there was no tension. Put in gear, it died. Put in neutral and started it again and put in first. The clutch lever did not work. Could not get out of gear to neutral. Had to kill it and roll back and forth to get to neutral. I put in a new clutch kit a few years back, hardly any miles on it. Should I change out the fluid or the engine oil? Any ideas? Jim
  8. One year, I decided to buy my mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift. The next year, I didn't buy her a gift. When she asked me why, I replied, "Well, you still haven't used the gift I bought you last year!" And that's how the fight started..... ________________________________ I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. "I'll have the rump steak, rare, please." He said, "Aren't you worried about the mad cow?" "Nah, she can order for herself." And that's when the fight started..... _______________________________ My wife and I were sitting at a table at her high school reunion, and she kept staring at a drunken man swigging his drink as he sat alone at a nearby table. I asked her, "Do you know him?" "Yes", she sighed, "He's my old boyfriend. I understand he took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear he hasn't been sober since." "My God!" I said, "Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?" And then the fight started... ________________________________ When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the shed, the boat, making beer.. Always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway." The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp. __________________________ My wife sat down next to me as I was flipping channels. She asked, "What's on TV?" I said, "Dust." And then the fight started... _______________________________ My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary. She said, "I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in about 3 seconds." I bought her a bathroom scale. And then the fight started...... ______________________________ After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's License to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later. The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt'. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair. She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' and she processed my Social Security application. When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office. She said, 'You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability too.' And then the fight started... ________________________________ My wife was standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror. She was not happy with what she saw and said to me, "I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment.' I replied, "Your eyesight's darn near perfect." And then the….
  9. I saw a couple of posts today about downloading music and while I don't condemn anyone for their choices, I respect the artists and their rights (and copyrights). But I do LOVE to collect live music and video of my favorite artists. I thought I would start a new thread and share a little of my experiences over the past 10 years with the "tape" trading community and downloading. "Bit Torrent" isn't the problem, it's the sites that you access with your Bit Torrent client. Like most other things created by man, Bit Torrent can be used for good or evil! I've used Bit Torrent every day for the past 10 years with no problems. I download mostly live music from "trade friendly" bands that approve of it that has been recorded at a concert or off of a TV. You won't find the top 40 there and nothing that is "copyrighted" or by a band that requets their live music NOT be shared. I got started with the "trading" community doing BnP, Vine and Trades. BnP is where you send Blanks and a self addressed stamped return mailer to a trader and they burn copys of the discs in their collection and return them to you. Vines (and trees) are organized methods of sharing by passing music through the mail to be copied. I must stress that this is all done with the approval of the artists and not all artists allow taping, trading, and/or downloading. However there are many, many "taper friendly" bands. Some of the most famous bands included are The Greatful Dead, Little Feat, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Govt. Mule, Phil Lesh, Widespread Panic, Ratdog, Yonder Mountain String Band, Drivin and Cryin, The Black Crowes, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Blues Traveler, Dave Matthews, and many more you may not be familiar with. OK, I'll admit that Bit Torrent is not for the feint of heart, requires some time learning the methods and practices, and can lead you DIRECTLY to the dark side! But if you follow the narrow path and be careful it can be VERY rewarding! Where it all began for me and a great place to hang out and get started is the Allman Brothers web community, Hittin' the Web. VERY friendly place to hang (a lot like venturerider and my other favorite place to hang, klrworld) and lot's of people willing to help you learn and get started "sharing the grooves"! Drop in, sign up, get started and you can thankl me when you get your first CD or DVD! http://www.allmanbrothersband.com/ In the "Music" forum check out Adopt-A-Newbie, Trades, and Vines. Trades and Vines are an unbeatable low tech way to get started in live music collecting. In "Trades" there are often "freebies" offered just to share and send out good karma. In "Vines" you can sing on to a Vine and when it's your turn the person before you sends you a package with CDs and/or DVDs and you copy them and send the origianls on to the nest person after you on the vine. Easy Peasy! http://www.allmanbrothersband.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=XForum&file=index&gid=21 Here's a few more good links to get started if you are ready to start a journey. Just beware, it is VERY addictive! Bit Torrent Clients and Info I use ABC but uTorrent and Vuze (formerly Azureus) and BitTornado are popular. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_(protocol) http://www.dessent.net/btfaq/ http://www.bittorrent.com/help/guides/beginners-guide Some Music Archives http://wiki.etree.org/ http://www.archive.org/details/audio http://www.archive.org/details/etree http://bt.etree.org/ Dime doesn't always accept new users, but it's a GREAT site http://www.dimeadozen.org/ The Traders Den is another Great site that I frequent. They have some GREAT FAQs there about Bit Torrent and suggestions for BT clients to use and where to find LEGAL music. Check out the info on BnPs, Vines, Trees, and Loops. These are ways to trade and aquire free live music and vodeo via US mail without the risk having to learn all about Bit Torrent. http://www.thetradersden.org/ FLAC is a common "Lossless" format for CD quality music shared on the net. You may also find SHN files. http://flac.sourceforge.net/ http://userpages.umbc.edu/~hamilton/shnfaq.html In addition to CDs, there are tons of DVDs out there too. Great Vintage concerts that were filmed by an audience menber or a PROfessional and may have been broadcast on TV or the original, or a copy, or a copy of a copy, etc. (this is where you will see the term "gererations" to describe how many generations from the origianla copy is). I've found great, rare, old video of most of my favorite bands such as The Eagles, James Taylor, The Who, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, The Allman Brothers, The Greatful Dead, Jethro Tull, and the list goes on and on and on. Now all this is pretty much Windows PC specific, but the general idea applies to MAc, I just have necer had a MAc and don't know specifics. I did read the Vuze (formerly Azureus) has an osx version for Macs. Have Fun!
  10. I just saw that we now have 11,100 members! I know I will never remember all those names. But congratulations Freebird, you sure started something, Good! Yama Mama:ice_awesome-vi46644
  11. has anyone replaced a clutch on a Venture around the year 2002, how hard is it? I have 53,000 miles on my bike and now the clutch has started slipping when i hammer down on it in fifth gear, the hotter it is the more the slip!
  12. So I finally took the carb tune out of the box (That i received two months ago)and took a dive into Synching the carbs so I got er all hooked up, got er started and well?, (I can say that my first gen 84 venture royale runs like a champ with an estimated 65000 miles on her and only running on 3?, well we'll just say 2 1/4 carbs. I can hardly wait to run on 4 carbs that are all synched together.) so back to the post, I didnt actually get to synch the carbs today because i am now going to have to rebuild at the very least one carb #1 and since IM there I might as well go ahead and do them all. I hook it all up and started it and found 1 running at 0 #2 running at around 8 and 3&4 running at 35 or so. Has anybody else found this before? and is there an easier fix for now before rebuilding the carbs? Also, does anyone have the part # for the VMAX floats that work in the first genner carbs? Can I just say that I love my royale...... :225:Thank you all for your time. Mike

  14. I thought I would post this up. On May 1st I will be atending a charity ride for the pediatric brain tumor foundation. It got started in my area after one of the local morning radio djs found out he had a brain tumor. After he had surgery and is now in remision he decided to give back and started putting together a ride for this group. Anyways there are several ways to help and in my opinion a worthy cause. If youd like to ride or help you can contact me or the site itself. http://www.pbtfus.org/rideforkids/events/2011/triangle.html let me know and please dont think its for me aas I get nothing out of this except a feeling that Ive helped out in some way. They said it had close to 700 bikes last year . It sounds like a blast to me David
  15. I'm new on here- evidently:) So I will learn if this is the right spot to post or not... But I have a 84' Venture Royale that I have fell in love with! I bought it 3 years ago. Have started to redo the bike. Did a full body fix and new single color paint job, with alot of beautiful nature scenery airbrushing:)) Re-did the seat etc etc. I put usually 10,000km or 6000m + a year on it, and i plan on taking a COLD trip with it the end of March. It is currently at a local shop getting 2nd gear fixed:( and there is another smaller issue i need fixed- The Radio and one speaker... Does anyone have any ideas where to get a unit and speaker(s)? Things started not working the end of the season and i need the radio on longer rides. Generally this is my quoting vehicle, but I'm headed to PA to a friends soon. Any help will be appreciated- Thanks, Dwayne
  16. I have a wierd problem that just started yesterday evening. I have the older Chatterbox headsets that have a cable between the driver and passenger and on yesterday's ride with Linda, I started having the static that goes up and down with the rpm. It is only in my headset and the really wierd part is if I touch something metal, like the clutch or brake lever or the risers, the sound goes away. I have had these units for probably 13 years and have never had this problem before. This particular box is a couple of years old. The only change I have made electrically to the bike is to mount the TCI in the left fairing on the wall behind the radio. I would think this might be the problem, but we rode a couple of days ago and did not have this problem. This Chatterbox system is not connected to the bike in any way. Any suggestions? RandyA
  17. Well I got into the brakes again. Now that I know how to bleed the left front out. I started by getting the resivor open. This I thought was going to be a pain but it popped right loose and was not bad at all. After topping off the fluid I started to bleed it out. I did it old school but still cheated. I made a check valve that would allow the air to exit but not re-enter. After 2 cups of coffee and 45 minutes of pumping the pedal up and down I had all the air out and good clean new fluid throughout the system. I want to thank you all for informing me how the brakes were set up and how to bleed them out. Shaun
  18. That is the question! This all started with buying a set of handlebar grip heaters. I decided why not change the grips to a set of Kuryakan ISO's and then started considering new handlebars as well. Sooo, my question is how much of a difference is there? I want the controls closer to me and am wondering how much they actually come back, and is there any clearance issues?? Will I gain any extra handlebar area for mounting stuff?? Opinions, please!
  19. If we can get down the driveway without slipping on the ice, the hubby and I are going for a ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 46 degrees out right now. Last week 30 below zero! My baby started right up last night, no choke, first time I hit the start button since last fall!!! :dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool: I CAN'T WAIT TILL 4:00!!
  20. I'm "taking advantage of Roxie's absence" to look into her predecessor, Suzie. Suzie is a 1989 Suzuki Intruder 750GLP. She was my starter bike, and when I got 10,000 miles on her I started looking for a step up, and that's when I got Roxie in July, 2008. Since then, Suzie hasn't been run much at all. I started her and got her to rough idle about 6 months ago. I ran some SeaFoam through her, but she still was rough. Today I completely took the tank off and drained it, then sloshed some Coleman's fuel around and drained that. I put it back on and put in fresh fuel. She started just about right away. However, she wouldn't idle, and eventually coughed and gave up. Now she won't start, and will barely catch now and again. What should I look at next? Fuel filter? Dave PS. I could go to IntruderAlert, which is much like VR. I just like y'all more.
  21. Wanting to get started on my '88 and it is needing faring parts. looking for a left side in at least fair shape. lower faring dash panel. will entertain any ideas you have. as i said before, i want to give folks here an opportunity first. I thought i had found what i needed but am no longer getting replies from the member so i guess he changed his mind....no problem, i do that from time to time myself. But i need to get started.....

When I look at the "Current Active Users" I'm always surprised by how many "Guests" are logged on. I would think that for a lousy 12 bucks they would become active members and enjoy all of the priveleges of full membership. I suppose we all started out as "Guests", but it seems odd that they out-number the members by such a large margin. Just sayin'.
  23. The weatherman's predictions came true! Schools and businesses were shutting down for today last night. Usually when they do that, it is a beautiful sunny day but not this time! It started snowing after midnight, then we had thunder and lightning and it started snowing more! Snow day! Snow day! Snow day! :happy65: Looks about 3 to 4 inches here!!! A great day to enjoy more of George's chili and my homemade cornbread!!! Be safe everyone! Bobbie
  24. The Night before leaving for Christmas vacation my 05 RSTD started leaking gas when I started it. Instead of panicking, I came here, and one quick search later figured out I had a stuck float. Back home now and drained / tapped the carbs and unstick it. Sea foam in the tank and carbs now. Not for the first time, I think " wow, that was $12 well spent"
  25. . CALMNESS IN OUR LIVES. I am passing this on to you because it definitely works, and we could all use a little more calmness in our lives. By following simple advice heard on the Dr. Phil show, you too can find inner peace. Dr Phil proclaimed, "The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started and have never finished." So, I looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn't finished, and before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of White Zinfandel, a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream, a package of Oreos, the remainder of my old Prozac prescription, the rest of the cheesecake, some Doritos, and a box of chocolates, and a half bottle of scotch. You have no idea how freaking good I feel right now. Pass this on to those whom you think might be in need of inner peace.
