  1. well, i have just about throwed all the crap at this old body that it can take so i am going back into semi retirement. i retired in 1994 and went to work for one of my good friends to help him out and pay for all my toys. ain't paid for the toys yet but just can't hook it like i once did. the boss don't know it yet but i'm going to start taking a day off here and there. mostly here. i'm going to start with this sunday night. besides that i done used up all my vacation for this year. :clap2:
  2. I know for some of you this has been a long time coming, and it's way past due, but better late than never. So for all those 1stGen members who want to sound great as well as look great, here's your chance. Right now we're putting together a list. Details will be posted later. The cost will be $225 including shipping to your door in the US and $235 for Canada. The mufflers will need to be built, so the sooner we get them ordered, the better. It will take a while to get them thru production. Send me a PM if you'd like to hop aboard. Once we get 10 I'll start working on collecting the money and placing the order. The MAC's are being built to order, so it'll take a while before I can ship. The quicker we get 10...or more?? The sooner we can get the ball rolling. LIST CLOSED 1. Saddle_Bag.... Paid 2. Iowa Guy.... Paid 3. DevilDog.... Paid 4. trucker6pak.... Paid 5. davez.... Paid 6. Geezer Glide.... Paid 7. SmilingJack.... Paid 8. Rocket....Paid 9. timthetoolman62....Paid 10. Snaggletooth....Paid 11. niagara135....Paid
  3. Well as you know my bike wouldn't start and now it is starting (see spark problem). Well I spent 2 days putting the bike and all the equipment back together. So I was so happy I started it right up and all I could hear was back firing and it was noisy. So I said to myself it's been sitting a month so it might need running down the road. Well that didn't work when I tried to give it gas and go the rpms would go down and the bike won't go so I pushed it back home. I looked down in the carbs as saw one of them was not moving so I took off the cover and pused it a little so it would work. I also put carb cleaner down in it. Well all the carbs were moving again but man was it popping alot and loud. It would idle great at 3rpm but when you went to 4 rpms the bike wanted to cut off and drop down to 1 rpm. The 2 carbs on the left side when you are sitting down on the bike we popping bad and fire would come out of them when you reved it. At 4 rpm the front carb would spudder and fire would come out of it and the compression would drop. When I tried to give it more gas the back carb would also do it and if you gave it more gas the bike would stall out. I called my mechanic and he said it sounded like the plug wires might be bad and I might to replace them well I did that and there was no change. So I gave up it's mechanic fault but I spent 650.00 to get the bike so it would start and now it doesn't run. The bike sounds great at 3 rpms but when you go to 4rpms the carb sliders start moving and it starts to back firing and the bike won't move. Am getting tired of this so if anyone wants to but 2 86 ventures loaded with chrome and all the extras will sell both of them for 3,500.00 I am tired of spending money since most of the mechanics know nothing on how to fix ventures. I will just ride my vw trike it easier to fix and I am not that motorcycle savy mechanic. Meatloaf:sick:
  4. Ok folks it's mc show time once again here in Michigan. This year it's on Jan 2nd - 4th at Rock Financial Showplace 46100 Grand River Avenue Novi, MI 48374 As in the past I plan on going on Saturday with breakfast at the Big Boy prior to the opening. Who else may be there? I'll start a list here and we can figure out what works best for everyone. Larry Here's a link to the shows website --- http://www.motorcycleshows.com/ Check #11 post as I won't be at Big Boy's after all.
  5. Well, now that the carbs are together, I tried in vain to start the thing today. It backfires out the carbs and exhaust, which is funny since it actually ran, albeit not well before the rebuild. It will fire and almost take off at times, but won't start. I am thinking that somehow the ignition timing has gotten out of adjustment. I have the instrument cluster off the bike, does that have anything to do with the ignition? Also, where is the ignition timing adjusted, if it can be? I also noticed the oil is like chocolate mousse. I filled the cooling system partially, but neglected to check the oil condition before i started messing with it, so the water may be from a previous encounter, and I am hoping there are no leaks into the case. Time will tell. Good news is that I have until January 5th to tinker with it.
  6. o.k. boys heres what happened. i went to local bike night last night,{yes we do ride in december here in florida} after dinner and social time i got on the bike to go home and ohoh it don' t start. the radioplays but nothing else works.light won't come on bike won't start.any ideas would be helpful.battery is fully charged and only 3 months old.
  7. Just bought an 84, not the Royale version (standard?) It needs lots of work. Been sitting for a couple years, every body piece on it is cracked some how, and the carb slides are stuck, just from my first looking over it. Good news is that I can jump the solenoid and it cranks over. I am sure I will have many questions, but my first one is this: When in neutral, the computerized display, the LCD part only, goes blank. In gear it displays properly. While I suspect t has something to do with the neutral start switch, is there a common place that I might check first as to avoid completely tearing apart the wiring harness? Also, is there a good place to find parts for this bike? Parts N more doesn't list it, and most other places I have found charge near dealer prices, or don't list it. Thanks
  8. Thank you for allowing me to join your organization. I have been following it for almost a year now and thought I should join. There obviously are many very well informed and generous members in this organization and I am glad to be a part of it. My Venture is the best bike I have ever owned and I have been riding since the late 1950's. I have a couple of minor issues on my bike that I want to "throw out there". One is this. Approximately every other time I start my bike (2004 Venture Midnight Editiion) the digital clock is messed up and needs to be reset. Does anyone else have this problem? Also, the headlight fuse blows every month or so. I have the factory lightbar but the last time it blew the lightbar was off. It is a 15 amp fuse and I am reluctant to install a 20 amp for obvious reasons. One time it would not start until that fuse was replaced but the other times it would start without replacing the fuse. I drive legally so do not ride without the headlight. Any ideas anyone?"

    Headlight problem

Hi everyone. First day here. I have a 1983 Venture Royale. It's a great bike. Had it about six months now. It had 38,000 when I bought it and I have put about four thousand miles on it since then, just puttin around town mostly, here in Eugene Oregon. Well, I would like to take some long jaunts on it eventually, but I am currently going through cancer therapy, well, actually, I have finished the radiation and chemo program and accordin to the docs the cancer is gone, so YAAA!, but I am still healing from the healing, and still seeing doctors real regular, so now is not the time for me to be taking any extended vacations. But I sure am dreaming of the day. So meanwhile, I ride the bike to the store and back, and wherever I need to go whenever it isn't too cold or rainy. Otherwise its our trusty old VW Westphalia camper. I like to keep my rigs in good repair so they may be counted on on a moment's notice any time day or night. So I am bothered by an annoying problem with my bike's headlight. Sometimes lately I turn on the key and there is no headlight. If I turn it off and wait awhile and try to start it again sometimes it comes on again. Well, eventually it does. A couple times I had to get on the bike and start it up and ride it around the parkig lot and stop and start it up again, and then the light would come on. So first thing I did was check the fuses. The headlight fuse was the worst of the bunch as it turned out, with one side being soldered into place. But it worked. And it worked when the headlight was working too. So the fuse did't see to have anything to do with the problem, even though that fuse holder will need replacing soon as I find one. So I went over to the local bike repair guy and he said he had never worked on one of these, and he scratched his head and looked at it. I am sure he could fix it but at $50 per hour I am not sure how long that might take. I went over the the Yamaha dealers and talked with the guy in the shop there and he was very turned on by my Venture Royale. He said that all the mechanics there had only seen one of these in pictures in a book. None of them had ever actually SEEN one for real. They loved the bike. But they charge big money to search out problems like that. I am not ready to fork over that big money yet, especially when I know from many years experience that it is probably just one little wire somewhere that doesn't like the Oregon Rain. It's just that the bike is still very new to me, and I don't even fully understand yet how to remove all the plastic covers without breaking the aging plastic tabs that hold them in place. (Broke one already.) So I got a lot to learn. And there is a lot of spaghetti wire to look at. Fortunately I have a good book with excellent wiring diagram. Unfortunately though, I am no wiring expert and those diagrams are little more than pretty technical pictures to me, kinda scarey, So, the first thing I think I will do is ask if any of you have experienced a similar problem with the headlight on your Venture Royale? Or if any of you have any helpful pointers of where I might begin at tracing down the problem? Thanks, RomTom
  10. I put the bike in storage about 6 weeks ago. I went to the storage this weekend to check the battery tender and start her up... I had to crank it a lot to get her to start and then I had to let her warm up a lot before she would respond to the throttle without sputtering and dying. Normally I just touch the start and she fires up and roars to life without a problem. any idea what is causing this? I dont want her to need major work in the spring. I did add stabil to the gas prior to storage and rode about 20 miles to get the fresh gas+stabil into the carbs.
  11. It amazes me that some people get so insane about standing a the door of the store in the wee hours to get in. Today in Valley Stream we had a Walmart employee get trampled to death by shoppers trying to get in!! You may say that that is the start to a good joke but Im dead serious!!! What is wrong with those freaks!!!
  12. New to this bike. Just acquired. Been setting for 6 months. Bike won't start normally. Will start and run briefly with starting fluid in carb intakes. Doesn't have 12v. to fuel pump with key in "on" position. Don't have owner's manual, shop manual, etc....nothing to work with. Any troubleshooting tips appreciated. Any leads on wiring diagrams. Location of fuel pump fuze, etc. would be very helpful. tks
  13. well i got a bug in the butt today and was cleaning my shop up and got to thinking. i really miss building stuff and metal fabricating. got the machinery and tools to do most anything mechanical just sitting idle. so i thought why not start manufacturing motorcycle related tools and accessories on a small scale. all i would have to do is up grade my milling machine to cnc., and i could kick butt and work at home. going to sort this out in my mind. my first product will be an affordable top of the line wheel balancer. i have connections with alot master machinists and work for very good friend who has a multi million dollar shop, so the sky's the limit on what i can get done. my wife says i'm to old to start a business, but it may be worth a try. bill ps. any one in the market for a top of the line wheel balancer.
  14. Hey guys I just wanted to let you know that the wind deflectors I posted a few weeks ago are up on ebay. The owner put them on at $17.99 buy it now, I dont know why he just didnt start them at that price before. Any way its a good deal if anyone is looking. Here is one of the item numbers 150309459852 Paul
  15. hey guys Im a newb to this site so be easy i just picked up an 1983 yamaha venture xvz12 and It needs some work but to start with I need a wire diagram for the f*&%ing thing I've been looking for two days and havint found crap any healp would be great:thumbsup:
  16. Just updated my XM subscription and asked a few questions concerning the XM/Sirius merger . They have now started to introducing "The Best of Sirius" on XM . Not all the channels are what some of you would want to hear right now , Howard Stern , PlayBoy , Martha Stewart , but at least they added NASCAR and NFL . Hey it's a start ! Other subscription tiers are in the works . I have went ahead and paid a years subscription of $186.89 + my XM weather for my Zumo for the XM + BOS . I was under the impression that any additional receiver would be somewhere around $6-7 + change a month . NOT ! $10.+change per "YEAR" for any additional receiver , whether it be an an XM or Sirius receiver !!!!! However the added Sirius channels aren't numerous at this time , at least it's a start as more channels to added later . Now from what XM told me , the same shall apply to Sirius subscribers . But they will be getting "The Best of XM" to start . So since my free Sirius radio subscription out of my new truck has expired , I just might take advantage of the $10.+change a year additional receiver charge . Though my truck sit pretty in the driveway most of the time ! :hihi: Just thought I would spread the news that something is happening in the XM/Sirius merger . BEER30
  17. First time it's done this... sitting still the radio sounds great, when i start moving i get bad static to the point you can't hear anything but the static. what's that all about?
  18. Hey there another newby here, Lets start of buy saying I'm not the most mechanically inclined person there is wright from the start. Now for my problem. After about an hour or so of ridding my 91 VR the battery gets week and inevetably I start to get the slow starts. The bike is also surging (for lack of a better way of explaining it) when i excellerate and also when I level of. It runs ok in 5th gear at 50 mph but if you drop it to 45 in 5th it has that whole surge thing going on. I've already tried multiple applications of sea foam and also checked the battery. The battery was low on fluid and power( about 4-6)volts so I charged it overnight after topping of the fluids and it had only dropped slightly over night. All this is voltage readings are coming from the gauge on the bike as I have no acess ( speeling?) to a meter. Since I dont have a meter I was wondering could I do the trick of removing the positive cable from the bike while it is running or does that not workwith a stator. I now it works with ans alternator but that is a different animal all together. Any ideas woulsd be greatly appreciated as I have only had this bike for a few months and am looking forward to many more years to come with it. This problem has also gotten worse since I added a pair of running lights ( the 55 watt lights from walmart). Cant say enough about this site as I have enjoyed the time I've spent hear greatly. Again any ideas that a mechanics dream like me could do in the drive with limited tools would be greatly appreciated. David
  19. ...can go down the toilet pretty quick. With that said, there is almost always a suprise around the next corner, some of them quite pleasant. I took a three week vacation this summer, and at the start it seem that every turn was away from my planned journey. I originally had planned to head east over the North Cascades in WA then due east from there to other locations... The day my friend and I left, the forcast for the Cascades was heavy rain, thunder and lightening... hmmmm not the best riding weather so the plan changed, south to Olympia for the night (as we had gotten a late start.) From Olympia, we decided to do the northern portion of the Oregon coast. While sitting in Astoria OR having fish and chips for lunch, a gentleman came along and commented on our bikes then asked if we had plans on riding in the area with the forcast for high winds and 2.5 inches of rain for that evening... Change of plans... East along the Columbia to Hood River, over Mt Hood and down to Bend OR that night. It made for a long day, but we stayed dry and the trip was worth it. We left Bend in the morning and headed to Crater Lake, if you haven't seen this beautiful spot, put it on your list of places to go. We saw it despite the torrential down pour on the way there.. We ended that day in Klamath Falls OR. Took a nice slow ride the next day up through OR and ended the day in Burns OR. The next day was also a bit long but well worth the ride, and the point of this novella... We left Burns and headed towards Boise. We then turned north through Idaho City and up through the Lowman Pass... Oh My Gawd!!!! Why have I never heard of this stretch of highway before? Sure, it's not the Sawtooth or Beartooth, but what a sweet stretch of road through some beautiful country. We ended our day In Stanley at the top end of the Sawtooth and regretably had to head north due to time constraints, but there is always tomorrow for those places we haven't been... This stretch of road south of Lowman Idaho was a pleasant surprise on a trip that looked to be going nowhere at it's start. Maybe I was being pushed this way just to find it... http://www3.telus.net/drbar/pics/Lowman%20Pass.jpg
  20. you might ought to start battenin' down the hatches. ike is coming, and you guys WILL most likely get a cat1 hurricane on Saturday afternoon/night. no need to run, cause you'll just start bumping into tornadoes! just jt
  21. Thanks to all who replied to my other posts. I have a 1984 Venture that wouldn't start, it would turn over but backfire and not run. I read thru a bunch of post and have arrived here. I've pulled the plugs and replaced (they were a little black ble ack but not what I'd call fouled. I peered into the tank and can see some rust, so how much rust should I be concerned about, I would think any rust is an issue, but I'd like to hear from the experts. I drained liquid from all four carbs and I call it liquid because it didn;t really resemble fule it resembled shelac, and smelled more like shelac and looked kinda like urine. I'm thinking I should drain all the fuel from the tank now. Questions: What's the easist way to drain the tank? Should I use the Krem stuff to line the tank now or wait for winter? Can't seem to find a fuel filter is there one somewhere? Got the battery out and filled with water and putting a good charge on it Is there anything else I should try before giving another try to start
  22. OK I haven't even successfully ran one M&E yet but we're off to a good start. I want to start on the next one before the snow falls (I hate the sound of that!)... HD final assembly plant is here in York. I thought it would be fun if we had an M&E that includes the HD factory tour. Imagine a bunch of Yamahas lined up at the HD plant! I suppose someone could turn that around on us, but it could be fun. This would have to be October or later as my August and September are getting booked! Who's in??
  23. Well, I now have my own embarrassing moment I swore would not happen to me. My wife woke me up at 5 AM, which is about 40 minutes late, and asked me if I was going to work. I immediately jumped out of bed and cursed the alarm clock (which I forgot to set) and went about my business of getting ready to go, in a hurry. I grabbed my lunch out of the fridge and headed out to the garage and boarded my brand new 08 RSV. Of course, being the reliable scoot that they are, it fired right up and I was on my way. All went well for the first seven miles, till I got to the last stop light before getting on I-24. I still had another 23 miles to ride. While waiting for the light to turn green, my trusty RSV just quit running. I stared at the instrument panel in amazement and wonder and thought what the @!#%$ is wrong with this thing. It has always ran perfect! Of course it only has 2000 miles on it, but it has been a very dependable 2000 miles. When I hit the start button, all the lights would come on like they should but the starter would not even turn over. I pushed the bike over to the side of the road and the only thing I could think of is a bad fuse. I proceded to take the battery cover off and about that time a fellow on a Star rode up and offered to help. I told him my problem as I continued to remove the seat. Just as I lifted the seat off, he told me to try to start it now. I turned the key on, hit the start button and it fired off before it made a complete rotation. Amazing I thought. It must have been a coupling loose under the seat and when I removed the seat it jarred it enough to make contact. No, that wasn't it the Star rider informed me. All he did was turn the kill switch OFF!!!!! Well I be !@#$#!@@$#@. And I'm already late for work too. EMBARRASSING!!!!!! I made it to work with no other problems other than being later. Glenn
  24. I tried to e-mail Frogman about this but I don't think it went so I'll try this route. Wed. morning my 93 VR didn't won't to start. I put about 3/4 choke turn on ign. and hit the start like always. In only a few seconds I smelled fuel like it was flooded. I shut off the chock held throttle wide open and hit start after about 15-20 sec. it fired ,I applied choke and it idled just fine. rode it the 23 mi. to work. That afternoon it fired right up and I rode her home. Thurs. Morn. no start. tried same tech. but no go. Got home started testing and found I have no spark to any plug wire. Came to the great VR web site and found Frogmans post about the TCI.(oh yea I tested the coil plugs and found I had no voltage going to the coils). Here's my problem. My 6 pin connector to the TCI has different color wires than the post describes. I have black/red, Black, orange, black/yellow,blue/red, and black/white. I have good ground to chassis. The black/white checks like frogman describes. The blue/red has 98.2 ohms to battery ground wire. The rest have no connection to battery grd. My 8 pin connector has 6 wires to it.It has 3.7 ohms to battery pos. with switch on, on the orange, gray, yellow, and white wires( about what frogman says). I have a red/blue and a black with .9 ohms to battery pos. with switch on. This .9 is probably 0 just not making good enough contact. So I think my problem lies in the black wire on the 6 pin, it reads out of limits to battery ground. I trace it along with the orange in the 6 pin all the way through a 2pin connector to the stator housing in left side crank case cover. I removed the cover and I can ohm out the wires all the way from TCI plug to where they go into the pick up coil. I cannot get any reading on either wire to the pick up coil bracket or the exposed metal sensor on the face of the pick up. ( I would think you would get some kind of reading from the wires to something there) I've cleaned several connectors but all looked good. I have yet to find the 5 pin connector under or below the front of the seat. From what I gather from all this my pick up coil is bad. It's $307!!! but hey if I need it I need it.( ridiculous price for that) I just need to see what you all have to say. This is almost over my head but I can generally figure things out. If it's not the pick up then I'm at a loss. Any ideas or experience you all have is greatly appreciated. Dan (shadow) Joyner.:bang head::bowdown: 's
  25. As my dad says, "Anything is easy if you know what you are doing" Well I don't and the bike won't start. Here is the symptoms. The battery is okay. The lights and dash look good when the key is turned on. Lights and dash go off as they should when I hit the starter button but nothing else happens. Bike does not turn over or even try. I've got several guesses but I've already shown my ignorance. What should I look for? Iowa Guy
