1. This occurred this AM about 11:00. http://www.wciv.com/news/stories/0510/734839.html?ref=em Mount Pleasant, SC - Police say two motorcyclists were killed in an accident when their motorcycles were struck and pushed into cars in Mount Pleasant on Tuesday. The Mount Pleasant Police say 50-year-old James Hines from New York and 80-year-old James Doucette from Florida died from injuries sustained from the accident. According to authorities, the two motorcycles were stopped in traffic near the intersection of 17 South and Anna Knapp. Police say the two motorcycles were then struck from behind by an SUV, which then pushed the two motorcycles into a car in front and then in to another car. Authorities say both men were in town for bike week. They were transported to MUSC where they died. The accident is still under investigation, charges are pending. Highway 17 south was closed for about three hours. ________________________________________________________________________ I got there shortly after they loaded 3 ambulances & headed on south into Charleston. There was a Harley laid over on it's left side with the aft end from the tank back under a large van (with the front of the van mashed......I think the pic in the article is that bike from the reverse angle) and what looked like 3 or 4 others on the ground with all manner of pieces bent & missing. I can't recall ever seeing that much bike debris....it was everywhere. The speed limit in that area (2 stoplights N of the Ravenel Bridge on Hwy 17 S) is 45 and is stop and go any time of the day; but especially that time of day. I'll stop short of speculating what the SUV driver did or didn't do and simply ask for prayers for all concerned. There were at least 6-8 other bikes parked a little beyond the wreck; I'm guessing they were part of a group ride and the 2 that were killed were at the tail end possibly separated from the rest by a car, but I don't know. All of the radio stations have been doing almost 1/2 hourly PSAs about watching out and reminding people that bikes are out in numbers......it's just not enough. Our presence just doesn't seem to be being made important enough to the rest of the driving public!
2. Had a wonderful ride yesterday around the mountains of east Tennessee and western North Carolina. Got to ride a little on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but much of it in the area I was in was closed. I rode across the Lynn Cove Viaduct near Grandfather Mountain, took a detour south and then back on to Little Switzerland. It is amazing how much tree damage there is there. In some areas, almost all the top parts of the limbs are broken off of every tree. There have also been many trees down in the areas that are open. I bet the higher areas around Mt Mitchell or south of Asheville were really bad as they were 3,000 feet higher than where I was. Most of the temp along the Parkway was around 80º and when I came down 226A to Marion, NC it was 88º. I went back over the mountain to highway 80, the Rooster tail, toward Burnsville and back across Roan Mountain. When going across Roan, which is a little over 5,500 feet at the gap at about 6pm, it was still about 65º. As I crossed over in to Tennessee, there was a lot of snow beside the road, most, much more than a foot deep. The road did not have any snow, but there was still more sand a stuff on the road than I wanted to ride on. But overall, it was a marvelous ride. What was also great was when I filled up in Spruce Pine, I got 49mpg. I have gotten 48 several times after making the needle adjustment and replacing diaphragms, but this was the first time I got 49mpg. RandyA
3. Hey all: Well, heading out on my first long trip on my 07 midnight RSV to Sanford, fla on Thursday. Leaving as soon as school is out as I have a 12 day break and ready to head south to visit my daughter. Got a new rear tire on yesterday, fluids topped off and got her washed and waxed yesterday. Anyone have any lastminute tips as I head south Thursday. Will try to get on Thursday night after checking into hotel and then Friday night after I get there. Plan on taking it steady and not in a hurry. Appreciate any prayers for safe travel. Brian D.
4. What is it about going South and catching colds?? Seems like every time I go south for a few days I catch a cold. This time is worse. Thing has been hanging on for a week and not getting any better. More like flu. I'm sorry Georgia for the remarks about Sand, Pine Trees and Swamps!! Maybe she is just getting even. Thought I was coming home to warmer weather and a chance to ride. If I crawl out there!! OK I'll quit whining and go back to bed...
5. Bob & his wife stopped by this afternoon on his way to their bike conversion. Swapped some parts back and forth. Went and had dinner. They are on their way and will stop south of Columbus, Ohio to spend the evening. Gary
6. I live in Central Mississippi... I get up this morning and it is snowing HARD. So far we got 4 inches and it is not supposed to stop till noon. I believe some of you northern folks have wished this on us down here in the south. We do not own, nor can you buy any where around here...tire chains...snow shovels...de-icing gear. They have cancelled school cause folks do not know how to drive in snow. Knock it off. This is not funny.
7. Welcome to the deep south land of sunshine and warmth..................:rotfl: This is after 5 1/2 hours of non-stop snow.........and it aint over yet!!!!!!!!!
8. As a newbie member, I'd like to "pu my nickel in" and add it to all your million dollar ideas... Enjoy these selected Rules of the Road, Chicago Style Welcome to CHICAGO! First you must learn to pronounce the city name. It is Chi-caw-go or Chi-ca-ga, depending on if you live north or south of Roosevelt Rd. If your road map is more than a few weeks old, throw it out and buy the updated one. If you are downtown, and your map is one day old, then it is already obsolete. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Chicago has it's own version of rules; "Hold on and pray." There is no such thing as a dangerous high speed chase in Chicago, we all drive like that. All directions start with "I-94"...which has no beginning and no end. The morning rush hour is from 6:00 to 10:00, and the evening is from 3:00 to 7:00. Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear ended, cussed out and, if you happen to be on the South Side, possibly shot. When you are the first one on the starting line, count to five when the light turns green before going to avoid crashing with all the drivers running the red light in cross traffic, but be prepared to hear the horns from all the cars behind you because you didn't immediately start moving. Construction on the NW Tollway is a way of life and enduring form of entertainment. If someone actually has their turn signal on, it is probably a factory defect. Car horns are actually "Road Rage" indicators. All old ladies with blue hair in Mercedes have the right of way, Period! First Ave., LaGrange Road, Summit, Pulaski...all mysteriously change names as you cross intersections. If you stop to ask directions on the West or South Side, you'd better be armed. A trip across town will take a minimum of four hours (East to West), but North-South freeways have unposted minimum speeds of 75 mph. The minimum acceptable speed on the Dan Ryan is 85 mph. Anything less is considered sissy. The wrought iron on windows near Englewood and Austin is NOT ornamental. The Eisenhower Exp. is our daily version of NASCAR. The Congress Exp. is called "The Death Trap" for (2) reasons; "death" and "trap". If it's 100 degrees, it's "Taste of Chicago" time. If it's 10 degrees and sleeting/snowing, it's opening day at Sox Park. If you go to Wrigley Field, pay the $25 to park in the "Cubs Lot". Parking elsewhere could cost up to $2,500.00 for damages, towing fees, parking tickets, etc. If some guy with a flag tries to get you to park in his yard, run over him! Happy Motoring in the Windy City!!! SUNRAYMAN
9. Well it's time.... Lonna and I are going to be headed back south to home as I have a job interview of sorts in Blanco. My Dad is getting along well, but I really need to pursue this opportunity as they are only taking apps until mid next week. So early Monday morning we are heading out of Michigan and down south. I hate to leave my Dad here by himself, but he's on my arse to apply for this job and hopefully get our lives back on track....wish us luck

13. Quickstep and I are leaving in the morning(Friday) on our first decent trip away riding since the accident in 2007!! Going down to Albany (that's AL-bany, not ALL-bany) which is on the south coast of Western Australia--to join about 80-90 other Ulysses Club members and take part in a Christmas Pageant. The club is having their AGM and Rally down there in March 2010 and we are helping to promote it. Leaving on a 37'C day, and travelling about 500 KLM's--to arrive in 24"C (thank goodness) we are coming home Sunday. So, musn't forget to pack some tinsel and decorations for the quike. Oh, and Quickstep is my "Pillion in a Million"
14. Well yesterday most likely was my last ride of 2009. It was 34 when I left on my 60 mile commute to work. I'll have to say the GW has great wind protection and I wasn't really that cold. Got up to 54 for the ride home. I had a hard time taking the exit for home The bike wanted to just keeping heading south. Hope I get to ride again before 2010, but the temps are below freezing today and calling for the white stuff soon. Jay
15. lauri and I are once again together, i thought ya would like to see the news of my homecoming http://www.wtoctv.com/Global/story.asp?S=11482307
16. I don't normally watch South Park, but I came across it channel surfing a few minutes ago and it is unbelivable how far they are taking it with Harley Riders. It is sooooo politically incorrect that I can't even discuss it here. But, it was funny. RandyA
17. Think some of us are big Harley bashers? You all ought to be watching tonight's South Park.
18. Ran the Natchez Trace from Columbia to Nashville on Sunday. Saw 4, 2nd Gen Ventures. Anyone from this site??? They were all heading south...
19. I was wondering if there is a way to search for members by state? I live in south Florida, and wanted to see who else lives close by. Thanks Mark

Rain

:rain2: :rain2: Now that it looks like the bike season is drawing to a close for us unfortunate northerners, and we have got to admit that this was one WET year.... I was wondering, what is the furtherest you have HAD to ride in the rain? Myself, before my Venture I had a VStar, I had gone on a trip and was on Manitoulin Island in a flyspeck of a town called Little Current, in a motel room the size of my garden shed (for the mere sum of $70!!) with the rain pouring and the Weather Channel saying rain for the next 2 days, unless you are south of Parry Sound. I might also add that 8 hours previous the Weather Channel had said sunny with cloudy breaks grrrrr! So I had no rain gear, but I threw on the leather jacket, said screw it and rode south. Went over a plank bridge with potholes that you could see the water below through, and it was slick as ice. No questions as to my heart working! After 6 hours, trucks up my arse, freezing so bad I went into full body shivers, pulling over to pour out my boots, hands and feet turning into white raisins, just not having fun!!! I arrived in Parry Sound for their freaking Music Festival (Who knew?) with all the motel rooms filled, except for the $150 per night, high end, over priced Days Inn. Spent the evening in the local laundromat watching my clothes spin in the dryer. So about 6 hours and about 300 miles for me, felt like an eternity.
21. I was traveling south on US 59 near downtown Houston in the cage with the wife about 6:30 PM Saturday (10/24) when an RSV and an RSTD went by me, then they took the 45 South exit. Was that anybody here?
22. Thought this might be of some interest to some of ya'll. I don't think you have Tim Horton's coffe/donut shops "down south" but here in Canada they are everywhere and almost all of them have lineups whenever you go there. I always wondered why ... always thought "they must be doing something to addict people" ... now I know they do.
23. The wife and i took a nice ride today along the Delaware river from Trenton rte 29. We traveled north thru Lambertville to Frenchtown. We had lunch in a nice spot along the river.and then south down thru New Hope. We passed 3-2nd gen Ventures at different times along the way. Were any Venture riders in that area today? Chris
24. It's time for us to have another chat here. Freebird not 2 weeks ago came on and mentioned about threads going south. Today I have closed 2 threads down due to folks coming on and taking them south. There are a couple of rules here, and for the most part, the greater majority of the membership have no problems following them. Political post are never good, they always go south as all of us have strong beliefs, I do too, way heavy (on the edge of being radical) than most of you know, but I dont express them here. We hear of tragedies and that sparks emotions in us, we then say our peace, usually before we take a chance to calm down and think about the consequesnces. It's understandable, but we are grown men and women, many over 40. Some like to fuel the fires and stir the pot, this is not acceptable. THINK before you post up something that MAY be misconstrewed. I know that most start out innocently as information, but they spiral quickley out of control and create hard feelings and get dander up. I am not here to preach to any of you, I am no better than anyone else on this site, but I will come on and give some of us a jerk and let folks know that the moderators wont tolerate this. For some reason this summer seems to be one of the worst for these kinds of threads that are usually kept for winter time when many of us can't ride. PLEASE think about what you post and the reprocussions that can happen by passing on info that stirs up emotions. Lets keep this in mind when we post and we wont have to seem heavy handed by closing or deleting threads. Thank you to all the members that contribute to this site. This place is enjoyable to come to because we try very hard to keep it light and enjoyable. I can speak for myself and the moderators in saying that you folks are very easy to work with. We dont have a lot of issues with the members....so THANK YOU
